[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_04]: God, the day that I am actually prepared is the day that we should both go by the lottery.
[00:00:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Truly, I think this is the most prepared I've ever been in three years of doing this.
[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I'm not quite sure who I am right now.
[00:00:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to The Incoherent Fangirl.
[00:00:21] [SPEAKER_04]: We are so excited to have a new author and a repeat offender in one guest tonight, Math.
[00:00:29] [SPEAKER_02]: You'll understand.
[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Look at me go.
[00:00:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Soon.
[00:00:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I am Karin from Carragans Christmas Land.
[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm Mandy from Hollywood.
[00:00:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, let's be sad.
[00:00:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I gotta put a blanket on for this.
[00:00:44] [SPEAKER_02]: In our timeline it is September 19th and in Yall's timeline it is September 27th.
[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_02]: It's almost Halloween.
[00:00:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, it's already Halloween here.
[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean like, yeah.
[00:00:56] [SPEAKER_04]: I decorated weeks ago.
[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like so in the mood for spooky season this year, which is weird because usually I'm
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_02]: not like a spooky season girly.
[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I'm a fall girly but not like a spooky season girly.
[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_02]: But I'm feeling it this year.
[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what it is, but-
[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_04]: It's always spooky season at my house.
[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_04]: It's fun.
[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm enjoying it.
[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I like it.
[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Alrighty.
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't like your announcement that you just gave, but-
[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Sorry, such as life.
[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_02]: There needs to be a balance, right?
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Fair.
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_02]: This week in fan girly, what'd you do?
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so I listened to while Josh watched the Crow, the new, the 2024 Crow, which is
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_04]: apparently controversial.
[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Apparently half of the world is so irate that this movie could possibly exist.
[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't even know there was another one happening, honestly.
[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah, it was in the 90s and then there was like-
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_04]: The graphic novel is what started it and then there was-
[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_04]: I guess there's been a few but it's such a cult classic that like remakes people are like-
[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, yeah.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_04]: I guess it would feel like if someone tried to remake Gilmore Girls where it's like-
[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Don't love that.
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_04]: It was so gory.
[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_04]: I cannot believe that I stayed but I'll tell you why I stayed at the end.
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_04]: If you have ever listened to me talk, you probably already know.
[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so we begin with Eric and Shelley meeting in this kind of an asylum,
[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_04]: kind of a therapy, kind of a prison situation.
[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_04]: So they're all wearing like matching sweatsuits and they're like handling trauma in super
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_04]: unconventional like group settings but then they have like rooms that they go to and
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_04]: that it seemed like they could come and go freely from.
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_04]: So it wasn't like you're in a cell but you can't leave the premises.
[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Like there's still a barbed wire fence around the place,
[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_04]: like a giant double human size with barbed wire on the top fence.
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_04]: So Eric and Shelley meet and they are soulmates instantly, like they know it.
[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_04]: They're like, oh my soul has been looking for yours.
[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_04]: So one day this group of-
[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_04]: You know every movie where the feds show up or the group shows up, the bad guys.
[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_04]: And they've all got briefcases and suits on.
[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_04]: They show up and Shelley is like, they cannot see me.
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_04]: They cannot know that I'm here.
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And so Eric's like, all right, he goes to this laundry room and he's like,
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_04]: there's a window, we're leaving and I'm going with you because I can't be without you.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_04]: So they flee, this is very early.
[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Very early.
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean maybe that's a spoiler but like this is so early in the film.
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_04]: They flee to her rich friend's apartment who he,
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_04]: they explain like this friend is in a different country and he lets her stay there.
[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_04]: So they are living there in this fancy apartment in Bliss
[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_04]: and they have like friends or they make friends and they go,
[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_04]: like they're in like, it's kind of like EDM community.
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Like they go to raves and stuff.
[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_04]: They're doing all of the in love things.
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_04]: There's like the montage.
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_04]: And then the bad guys show up at the apartment and they are there to kill her.
[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_04]: They put plastic bags over both of their heads and it's awful.
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_04]: And the whole time he's screaming, not her, not her.
[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_04]: And as he's like through his own bag, not hers, not her.
[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_04]: And he's watching her die.
[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And it is, it was awful.
[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And just screaming for them to let her go while he dies.
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_04]: So she dies and he watches it happen.
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_04]: And then he kind of comes to in this other place and it's like,
[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_04]: it's kind of like a, I would explain it as like an abandoned train depot
[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_04]: where there's no walls in the middle of an abandoned city.
[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_04]: So just very industrial crows everywhere and like random plants
[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_04]: growing up through the stuff and water.
[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_04]: And so he meets this person who tells him the crows will guide you
[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_04]: to set things right.
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_04]: And so it's very ominous.
[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_04]: And then he wakes up in a river where his body had been dumped
[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_04]: and he's still alive.
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_04]: And he has like super healing abilities where like you could shoot him in the chest
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_04]: and he's just gonna like fall backwards and then keep going.
[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_04]: So vengeance ensues.
[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_04]: It is so gory, okay?
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_04]: But I am always here for, I will avenge you even if I damn myself to eternal hell on the process.
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Bill Skarsgard is a hot, sick crow.
[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think Alex E. Harrow must have known that this was coming when she gave us Starling House
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_04]: because when you hear he looked like a sick crow, you're like, is that mean?
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_05]: No, you're like that.
[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_04]: What does a sick crow look like?
[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_04]: And then you watch the crow with Bill Skarsgard and you're like,
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_04]: that's a fucking hot, sick crow.
[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I got it now.
[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, holy shit.
[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, it was very broody.
[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_04]: It's the first time.
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_04]: It's so strange because Bill Skarsgard like is a very serious actor.
[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Like he's Pennywise.
[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I've only ever seen him in these like spooky roles.
[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think I've ever seen him smile, but when he's with her, I saw him smile for the
[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_04]: first time in this movie that I knew was supposed to be about like vengeance and blood and anger
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_04]: and rage.
[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And so I was like, oh my God, he's got such a nice smile.
[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, he's smiling.
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_04]: And then it was like, I hate everyone, but you, they hurt you.
[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_04]: No one is safe.
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Everyone's dead to me and I'm going to make sure they all die.
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_04]: So it was very, very much a book we would read.
[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_05]: It sounds like it.
[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_04]: It was a very much a book we would read.
[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Super gory there.
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I thankfully, I looked it up.
[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Somebody was an angel and explained when it was coming and what happened.
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_04]: No dogs are died, but someone does break their leg bone and it apparently is very graphic.
[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_04]: So if that is something that upsets you, I didn't see it because it says the person
[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_04]: falls out of a moving car.
[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_04]: And so I saw that happen and I covered my head for 30 seconds until I could hear
[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_04]: the next scene and I just kind of made a lot of noises and kind of tried to listen out
[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_04]: for a change in the music and it happened.
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_04]: And then we were good to go.
[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_04]: But it was still very gory.
[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Lots of gunshots, lots of stabbing, lots of vicious wounds healing themselves,
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_04]: which is really even Josh was like, this is gruesome.
[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_04]: This is gruesome.
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Something is worse.
[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Something is worse about like a wound healing itself in reverse itself.
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_02]: You're right.
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_02]: It's the reverse that makes it creepy.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_04]: It was so creepy.
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_04]: So I've continued, I can also correct and give the correct pronunciation.
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_04]: I've continued Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clark.
[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's Mr. Norrell.
[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_04]: It is very Charles Dickens and Jane Austen get together to write a fantasy novel.
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_04]: And a lot of that means that there's so much going over my head.
[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Like I love Jane Austen, but when you read her books, you're like, this is too smart for me.
[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Like the language and stuff.
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_04]: It's very similar to older works.
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_04]: So it does begin with Mr. Norrell being discovered as a magician.
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_04]: He's an odd dude.
[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_04]: He's kind of kept to himself, but then he gets notoriety for being like the only
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_04]: magician in England for centuries.
[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_04]: And so now he's like, okay, but y'all know that like no one is better than me.
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Right?
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Like I'm a magician.
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_04]: You want to invite me to your parties.
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_04]: You want to invite me to, you know, a weekend at your estate.
[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_04]: And he enjoys like saying, no, thanks.
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_04]: He wants to be invited, but sometimes he doesn't want to come.
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Other times he wants to be there and like be the center of it all.
[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_04]: So he's like, invite me to your parties.
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_04]: We'll, we'll pretend that I'm recluse.
[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_04]: You know?
[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_04]: So like he makes a fleet of, like I mentioned this last week, he makes a fleet of ghost
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_04]: ships to terrify the French.
[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And what it does, the reason it terrifies them is because it makes it look like England
[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_04]: has drastically more boats than they do and much more might than they do.
[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_04]: And so they're like, all right, hold on.
[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_04]: We can't like we don't have where, where in the book France could
[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_04]: have steamrolled England easily.
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_04]: But now because of his ghost ships, they're like, oh my God, we can't fight you.
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_04]: He also brings a woman back from the dead, which is interesting where I am.
[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm still only about halfway through and I listened to it a lot, like driving,
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_04]: cleaning, doing whatever Jonathan Strange has just shown up and he's younger.
[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_04]: He's kind of quirky and everyone thinks and even the reader thinks like,
[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Norrell's going to hate him because some of this attention that he's been
[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_04]: getting is going to go to strange.
[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_04]: No, he's like, come be my, my mentee.
[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_04]: I'll mentor you.
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I'll teach you everything I know.
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_04]: I'll give you books.
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_04]: So that's been a surprising change from what you think of this character.
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_02]: He's lonely.
[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_04]: He's lonely.
[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_04]: And he doesn't, he doesn't, he's not understood by anyone.
[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_04]: He is everyone wants party tricks.
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Everyone wants him at their event to be like the, you know, show pony.
[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_04]: But no one knows what it's like to actually do the magic.
[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_04]: And so he does have, yeah, that connection with Jonathan from that.
[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_04]: So I didn't even tell Karen this because I forgot about it.
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_04]: We went to a concert.
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah.
[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_04]: I look, I think it was like Sunday.
[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_04]: It was either late Saturday or Sunday.
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I was looking at our calendar for something and I was like, oh my gosh,
[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Josh, we have concert tickets.
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_04]: We have spirit box tickets Monday for us and for the girls.
[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_04]: So I had to like tell the twins dad like, Hey, I got tickets.
[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_04]: I know you just got back, but like tickets are concert day when they were $25.
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_04]: So spirit box is like a metal band that Josh and the girls really like.
[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, they're fine.
[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't, I don't dislike them if they're on.
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_04]: I'll sing.
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not going to like, I don't have a t-shirt that I'm not hating.
[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_04]: I just, they're not like, I'm not even going to be.
[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_04]: I like them, but I wouldn't, I wouldn't have gone to their concert alone.
[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_04]: They opened for corn, which we left for just because like we really didn't need to see
[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_04]: corn.
[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_04]: We didn't have any real interest, but the band between them was Gojira.
[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Gojira, I don't know if you saw it.
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I saw what you posted.
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, no, no, no.
[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_04]: So the band Gojira is the band that played in the Paris Olympics where it shows the
[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_04]: French national opera in the windows of this chateau looking like Marie Antoinette,
[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_04]: like headless women singing Sarah before going into a freaking metal song with the band hanging
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_04]: out windows of this chateau and with fire everywhere.
[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_04]: It was the most metal thing I have ever seen in my life.
[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Amazing.
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Is that band too?
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_04]: So we stayed for them for a little bit and then we went to
[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Water Burger, which is my reason for going on this whole excursion.
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_04]: I no one understands how much like how happy Water Burger makes me.
[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_04]: It's the spicy ketchup, which you can get at Kroger, but it's not the same
[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_04]: as like eating it with your Water Burger.
[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_04]: So that was my reason for going.
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, we went to see a metal concert and go to Water Burger on a school night
[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_04]: in Alpharetta, which is above Atlanta.
[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I need you to tell the people what, what the, was it both the twins or just one
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_02]: of the twins said?
[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh my God.
[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so we're listening to Spirit Box and Josh and the older twin are like the big Spirit Box
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_04]: people.
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_04]: The younger twin likes them more than, not more than I do.
[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_04]: She just like, she has a T-shirt.
[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_04]: She knew more of the words than I did.
[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_04]: They have their phones up like recording and singing along and shaking their heads.
[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_04]: She and I are just kind of vibing.
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_04]: So the singer from Spirit Box says,
[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Gojira's up next.
[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_04]: And this baby thought that she said Hozier's up next.
[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_04]: She was like, I nearly died for a second.
[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like child.
[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to be back here in the lawn if Hozier's here.
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_04]: If Hozier's here, I've spent all the money I can to get us into the pit
[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_04]: so that we can use these elbows for good and get our way up to the front
[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_04]: to catch some of that man's sweat.
[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, like we're not, we're not all the way back here a mile from the stage.
[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_04]: The way I died.
[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_04]: We got lawn seats because every, I think it's just once a year,
[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Ticketmaster does the $25 concert ticket seats, including fees.
[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's $25 a seat plus tax of course.
[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_04]: That's what we, this is when we got my taking back Sunday tickets.
[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's when we got these tickets and they were just a lawn general admission.
[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Like they had seats, seats closer, but we didn't really care that much.
[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, she thought we were seeing Hozier.
[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I was like, I wish, God, I wish we were at Hozier.
[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_04]: So Josh wasn't feeling well that day.
[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_04]: So I drove up and I didn't want to listen to Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell on the drive-up.
[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_04]: I just needed something more engaging.
[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_04]: So when I started, did you hear about Kitty Car by Crystal Smith Paul?
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's a dual timeline.
[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's now, I think it's 2017 ish.
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_04]: I think Kitty Car Tate is a mega old Hollywood star.
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_04]: So she's Marilyn Monroe, Catherine Hepburn, Betty Davis, Caliber, Old Hollywood.
[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_04]: She dies and she leaves her multimillion dollar estate, everything she owns to three sisters.
[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Young already rich and famous black women.
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_04]: So all of the Hollywood and pop culture circles are like a buzz.
[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_04]: They're like, why did this old Hollywood star leave these random three black women
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_04]: sisters all over money?
[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_04]: So then this dual timeline also brings us back to Hazel,
[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_04]: who was the young black woman in the segregated South in the 1940s.
[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_04]: She was in Winston and Salem, North Carolina.
[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_04]: She's raped and impregnated by the white son of her employers.
[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Her baby girl, Mary is born so light-skinned that she could be white passing.
[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And during her childhood, Hazel takes Mary to Charlotte,
[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_04]: it's a town like two or three hours away.
[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_04]: They ride the bus every Saturday or Sunday and encourages Mary to pretend to be white.
[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm your maid.
[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_04]: And so that her daughter can sit in the movie theater seats and enjoy a movie
[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_04]: or can go into the diner and get a milkshake or can go into the store and get a fancy dress.
[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_04]: And the only way that Hazel is allowed into some of these places is as her maid,
[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_04]: because black women are only allowed in any kind of public white's only space
[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_04]: if they are in control of a child, if they have a young child with them.
[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_04]: And even then like in the movie theater, she has to sit up in the balcony
[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_04]: and watch Mary from below or from above.
[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_04]: So you infer very quickly that Mary is Kitty Carr,
[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_04]: that this white passing child is Kitty and that she's a black but white passing woman
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_04]: who is one of Hollywood, old Hollywood's most beloved stars of her day.
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And no one has any idea that she's a black woman.
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_04]: She is technically, obviously she's a fictional character,
[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_04]: but in their world, she is the first black woman to win an Oscar,
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_04]: but no one knows that.
[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_04]: So I haven't gotten to the, did you hear about Kitty Carr?
[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_04]: She wasn't white, the world finding out because of course you know.
[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, right.
[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_04]: That's what's gonna happen eventually.
[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_04]: That's gonna be a big moment, but I have gotten to one predictable,
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_04]: but still like big in the story reveals and it's been really good.
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_04]: It's been really eye-opening again fiction, but I'm sure these existed too.
[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_04]: There are underground groups of white passing women in the 50s and 60s
[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_04]: who are working to infiltrate Hollywood and the government
[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_04]: and they do this by marrying white men.
[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_04]: They pass as white women, they marry white men
[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_04]: and then essentially they become a bug in their husband's ear.
[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Well you know why don't we hire a person of color in this film role?
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Or honey, you know it's sad to see these people not able to do this.
[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Why don't we think about some legislation to make a change?
[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And they have to, it's very, it's a long con
[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_04]: because their husbands will laugh them off,
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_04]: but they are slowly but surely trying to lead progressive change
[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_04]: by being black women married to white men in power.
[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_04]: So far it's been so good, so good.
[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't want to come record because I have an hour left
[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_04]: actually it's only like a half an hour because I'm listening at 2x
[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_04]: but I was listening while I was cooking dinner and eating.
[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_04]: It's been so good.
[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I have chills, like oh yeah.
[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_04]: It's incredible and it's on Libby.
[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's a very quick, like I said I started it Monday
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_04]: and I've just I've only listened to it like if I was cooking
[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_04]: and we've had a busy week so it hasn't been a lot of time but super good.
[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_04]: And then last I started The Lovers by Rebecca Fabian
[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_04]: which we'll talk about later.
[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_04]: What did you do this week after my long winded?
[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_02]: I have, I have a few things.
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_02]: So I read Virgin Sacrifice by L. M. Ramirez.
[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_02]: You got Luz who has a lot of secrets when she starts at Hollow Oak University
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_02]: but she's determined to keep them close to her chest
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and get through her four years there,
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_02]: get her degree without getting into any trouble.
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Unfortunately for her, trouble has a way of finding her.
[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_02]: So when a heart is nailed to her dorm room door,
[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_02]: she unfortunately attracts the attention of the infamous Blackwell family
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_02]: who are kind of like the founders of this small town
[00:17:11] [SPEAKER_02]: where the school exists as well as the school itself.
[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_02]: And rumors like tiny whispers across the town
[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_02]: indicate that they may or may not be a family of murderers.
[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Luz has to figure out, so Luz like I said has secrets from her past
[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_02]: and she's been trying to keep them you know on the down low
[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_02]: but somebody somewhere seems to know these secrets
[00:17:35] [SPEAKER_02]: and is starting to drop hints that they know her secrets
[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and so she has to figure out who this person is
[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_02]: who is stalking her and trying to reveal her secrets
[00:17:45] [SPEAKER_02]: all while avoiding attention from the very hauntingly attractive Blackwell twins.
[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_02]: This is the first book in the Dead Girls Club series
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_02]: which is a dark why choose romance and it does kind of leave off
[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_02]: on a bit of a cliffhanger.
[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_02]: The note in like the synopsis on Amazon says that
[00:18:06] [SPEAKER_02]: we're promised that Luz will get her psychos in the end
[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_02]: so I'm very intrigued to see where it goes.
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was pretty good, it was well written
[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_02]: but it definitely it doesn't for me it didn't feel like a complete story really
[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_02]: and which makes sense because it's the first in a series
[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_02]: but I think I'm just kind of used to like each book finishing something.
[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Still being its own story, still having a timeline.
[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Right and I don't know like yeah I don't know it I mean it's fine I enjoyed it
[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I just I was expecting I guess like a little bit more of a finish
[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_02]: or a conclusion to things that started in this book
[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and it very much feels like it's just the first act of a longer story
[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and while it is marketed as dark romance it kind of
[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_02]: and it might just be for this specific book because it's the beginning of it
[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_02]: but it kind of feels like more like YA dark than dark romance
[00:19:04] [SPEAKER_02]: like dark romance lights even though you know there's like serial killers
[00:19:08] [SPEAKER_02]: and hearts being hammered to doors it just it didn't quite get me there
[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_02]: in the way that like other dark romances have kind of been like oh okay
[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_02]: this is real dark but I do have an arc of book two which is called lady killer
[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_02]: so I am really excited to read and see like where the story goes
[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm hoping like more things will be revealed and it'll feel
[00:19:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I'll feel a little bit better about the story.
[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't actually know how many books are in this series
[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_02]: so I'm low key scared there's gonna be another cliffhanger
[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_02]: but we'll see.
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I guess that's what they want from you.
[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I guess so.
[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_02]: So next up I read unveil by Elodie Hart
[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_02]: this is the third book in the alchemy series and this one follows Genevieve Karoo
[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_02]: who is the COO of like the best sex club in London
[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_02]: and which is called Alchemy
[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_02]: and Anton Wolfe who is the UK's most charismatic billionaire
[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and also alchemy's newest member
[00:20:05] [SPEAKER_02]: and Gene does partake in the club when she feels like she needs to
[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_02]: but she prefers to kind of keep her proclivities private
[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_02]: and doesn't really like to be as out there as her other co-founders
[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_02]: which I get.
[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Meanwhile Anton has his eyes set on her from the moment that they meet
[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_02]: and he is so like he's the kind of guy who has never been told no in his life
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_02]: but at the same time he like while he's trying to do everything he can
[00:20:37] [SPEAKER_02]: to not just get into Jen's pants but like into her life
[00:20:41] [SPEAKER_02]: he's also super respectful of her boundaries
[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and like won't do anything like explicitly that she won't says no to
[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_02]: like she specifically says she's like you can't touch me
[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_02]: like at all ever period
[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_02]: and he like he's like okay that's fine
[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_02]: but he's still like flirting with her and kind of like
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_04]: We love a boundary we're so much in pain.
[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes he does respect all her boundaries while still doing his best to like tear down the walls that she's put up.
[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_02]: So it's really it's refreshing to see and the tension is kind of is like so good between these two
[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_02]: but it does kind of feel like nothing really happens in the story
[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_02]: like it's a whole lot of nothing like it's just tension.
[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Having to be so tired.
[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_02]: No I mean substance.
[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Until like yeah until like the third act where and the climax where like
[00:21:33] [SPEAKER_02]: the the third act breakup would be that's when things start like
[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_02]: there's actual like things really happening.
[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_02]: There is no third act breakup Anton does do something that like makes her really mad
[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and so they like separate but she's basically just waiting for him to apologize
[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_02]: they don't ever actually break up they just split apart
[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and so she's like waiting for him to like figure out what he did wrong
[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_02]: because he can't like get it through his head why she's so upset.
[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_02]: It's super what I thought it was super cute was that he went to her three co-founders slash best friends
[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_02]: they've been there the four of them had been friends since uni and so they're like basically
[00:22:10] [SPEAKER_02]: like her overprotective brothers right and so they know her better than anybody
[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_02]: and so he goes to them he like sets up a meeting with them without her knowing
[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_02]: and like is like I need you to explain to me what I did wrong like how do I fix things
[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_02]: and I was like okay I like that yeah so yeah it's fun because it gives you like a sneak not a sneak
[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_02]: peek but like a peek into after the HEA for the first two couples in the series and then it also
[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_02]: gives you a peek into the future like a tease for the next three couples in the series and I
[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_02]: think she really manages to do that really well like there's all these little hints and teases
[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_02]: for what comes next and you still get to see the people that you already loved from the beginning
[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_02]: so I'm a fan and the spice is off the charts of course like it's in a sex like the sex is the
[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_02]: central place where everybody like uh so yeah then I watched the Emmys Eugene and Dan Levy were
[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_02]: the host this year and I want them to host all the award shows they were I love them so much
[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_02]: they're so funny they're just and they're like just so precious I adore them so much the only thing
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_02]: that I really wrote down was Hero Yuki Sonata and Anna Soi uh one for lead actor and lead actress
[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_02]: in a drama series for Shogun and I was bawling my eyes out I was so happy it what made it even
[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_02]: like better for me was that Steven Young was the one who presented Hero Yuki Sonata with
[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_02]: the award and I was like oh I'm a mess I love it so much I did get so upset earlier this week
[00:23:44] [SPEAKER_02]: because somebody on threads was like oh well I'm happy that they won but like I'm kind of annoyed
[00:23:51] [SPEAKER_02]: that Asian actors are only winning awards when they're playing non-English parts and I'm like
[00:23:58] [SPEAKER_02]: but Steven Young and Alley Wong literally just won last year at the Emmys and those were not Asian
[00:24:03] [SPEAKER_02]: parts like somebody commented that commented that too and the original person was like they won for
[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_02]: limited series slash movie I'm talking about lead actor and actress and I'm just sitting I did not
[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_02]: respond because I knew that I would not it would not go well I would be very upset but like Steven
[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Young and Alley Wong literally won for lead actor and actress like for a limited slash
[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_02]: series we don't have to put like a yardstick on it though right like they legit they won for their
[00:24:33] [SPEAKER_02]: acting chops in addition to the series winning for as a whole like as a as a collective it won for
[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_02]: limited slash anthology season series so it's not like they didn't win individual awards they did
[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm just like are you were you trying to like I don't know like why are you like they were
[00:24:52] [SPEAKER_04]: trying to have a gotcha moment but all it did was diminish their accomplishment by saying oh they
[00:24:57] [SPEAKER_02]: only won because they were in a non-English role yeah and I'm just like well the original person was
[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_02]: like it goes to show like Hollywood only likes us when we're like foreign and not like I'm like
[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_02]: literally that's what are you talking about like I don't know what I mean I do feel like award
[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_04]: should be more diverse oh of course and Hollywood should be more diverse and I feel like we're
[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_04]: trying to get there and we're not trying to get there but like the way that their accomplishment
[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_02]: the way that they pose this like scenario and like double down on it being like well they didn't
[00:25:35] [SPEAKER_02]: they didn't they only won for a limited series slash uh movie not I'm talking about lead actor
[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm like but they did win for lead actor like do you mean lead actor in a drama because
[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_02]: that's that's a whole different story you know that's a different category in and of itself but
[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_02]: like if you're just talking about acting roles like they literally won for their acting so yeah I
[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_02]: just it was such a weird moment so annoying I know I'm just like god damn it anyways that was my
[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_02]: frustration I read I have two more one more book to talk about um so I read hers for the weekend
[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_02]: by Helena Greer it's the final book in the carragans christmas land series and if you remember
[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_02]: carragans christmas land is the jewish-owned christmas tree farm yeah from book one which is season of
[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_02]: love so this book follows terris loan chadwick who is the ex of Miriam from book one as she heads back
[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_02]: to carragans to attend Miriam and no noelle's wedding and one of my favorite lines in the book
[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_02]: was like I something I didn't write it down exactly but it was something along the lines
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_02]: of like this could only be more lesbian if they were both my exes
[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like that is so funny and I love it and so in a moment of panic when oh gosh I forgot her name
[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_02]: but um when Miriam's cousin is talking to Tara about like her rspp to the wedding Tara panics
[00:26:58] [SPEAKER_02]: and rspps with the plus one saying that oh I'm gonna bring my girlfriend and and so then she
[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_02]: was like gets off the phone and is like panicking and she does this while she's at her like favorite
[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_02]: coffee shop and the cute waitress holly who is she's had a crush on for a while now swoops in and
[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_02]: like agrees to be her fake dick to the wedding because why not this sounds like fun but we
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_02]: have to make it a road trip like because they live close enough to drive and holly has some
[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_02]: ulterior motives here because one she has also been lusting after Tara for quite some time
[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_02]: and two she's trying to avoid going home for Christmas because her mom keeps trying to set
[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_02]: her up with her ex-wife it's a whole thing and so yeah right thank you for being supportive but like
[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_02]: that's a little that's a little much that's a little too far yeah and so holly isn't interested
[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_02]: in settling down like she's not interested in getting married again and Tara only wants to
[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_02]: date to get married so they are obviously not compatible however they have decided to enter into
[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_02]: a brief friends with benefit situation until the end of the wedding festivities because why not
[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_02]: nobody will catch feelings nobody will catch feelings and it's just as you expect things go
[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_02]: awry and it's so good there's only one bed it's forced proximity it's like friends to lovers
[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_02]: it's found family it's healing there's trauma and healing and it's probably my favorite of
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_02]: the three and I just I am in awe of Helena just growing so much as a writer as she's good like
[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_02]: obviously that's what authors do but like it just it's so fun to see and it's like it's so bittersweet
[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_02]: because I'm like yay everybody gets their happy ending but also I don't want to leave
[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_02]: the ending like I love all of these characters so much and I just want to hang out with this
[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_02]: family and be with them forever and it just makes me so happy to see that everybody's happy
[00:29:02] [SPEAKER_02]: and bonus points all three books in the series if you put them together they make the
[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_02]: by pride flag it makes me so happy I love it so much and then I also I read the lovers
[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_02]: by Rebecca Fabian which we will talk about momentarily and then I went to Dom's book
[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_02]: launch for karaoke queen which was so much fun he came to the event as his alter ego
[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_02]: his drag alter ego ubebe and looked absolutely phenomenal okay yes oh so beautiful I've never
[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_02]: looked that pretty in my life like I don't think anyone has no like stunning it was so much fun
[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_02]: the conversation was so much fun and we ended the evening on a group karaoke session of dancing
[00:29:42] [SPEAKER_02]: queen of course of course and at one point I texted you this but at one point somebody
[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_02]: was like this book is like a love letter to drag into the bay area and Dom looks right at me he's
[00:29:54] [SPEAKER_02]: like we just talked about this and proceeded to like talk about me and the podcast and be like
[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_02]: everybody you need to go listen you need to go subscribe and talking us up and I was just like
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like sitting here I'm like oh my gosh my face is so red I was not made to be perceived
[00:30:08] [SPEAKER_02]: this way this is too much it was very sweet but my favorite moment of the night was when
[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_02]: we were standing in the signing line and my daughter turns to me and she says mommy why didn't Dom come
[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_02]: it was so so precious I love her so much and I was like I was like honey ube is Dom's drag
[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_02]: persona and she was just like what like it was it was so cute and we really we had a really
[00:30:40] [SPEAKER_02]: good conversation about like drag queens and you know the insane people who are trying to drag
[00:30:46] [SPEAKER_02]: band drag and all of this and like and it just makes me so happy to know that I'm raising
[00:30:53] [SPEAKER_02]: like a kind and compassionate child who is like that's stupid yeah so that was really fun and
[00:31:00] [SPEAKER_02]: that was my week do you have a fictional boyfriend this week I do not but I do have a
[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_02]: fictional girlfriend is Tara Sloan Chadwick who is the Phoenix of Charleston she is like this
[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_02]: no like takes no bullshit lawyer who is doing her best with her privilege because she was born
[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_02]: in some money she's doing her breasts with her privilege in order to help people who need it
[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_04]: he said doing her breasts
[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_04]: this is what it sounded like this is my favorite like
[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_02]: what ever that's the I love that I love that I'm leaving that in yeah but yeah she's just
[00:31:45] [SPEAKER_02]: she's trying to basically tear down everything from the inside and trying to help you know people
[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_02]: who are not as advantaged as she is especially the queer community and all of that and she's so
[00:31:57] [SPEAKER_02]: poor thing is so damaged and so traumatized and I just want to squeeze the hell out of her
[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and remind her like she's loved and like she's so fiery and fierce and she's willing to like
[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_02]: decimate the earth for the people that she loves and she doesn't believe that anybody would do that
[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_02]: for her even though it's so clear that they would which is why the Kerrigan's family is my
[00:32:20] [SPEAKER_02]: found family my fictional found family for the week because they're just I love it so wholesome
[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_02]: everything everything love it so much I love this series so much do you have a fictional
[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_04]: I have to I would be remiss if I did not select Eric from the crow because
[00:32:39] [SPEAKER_04]: you just have to look just have to look you gotta look I mean especially after at one point
[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_04]: he ends up back in the other place and I don't want to give too many spoilers but he starts
[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_04]: like bleeding like black out of his eyes and it like leaves all of these markings on his face
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_04]: and he goes back and he just looks like death and as he looks like he would have shadow magic
[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_01]: and as we've established and we now see all the threads have connected yes yes yes
[00:33:12] [SPEAKER_04]: and he's a scars guard I mean I never found anything wrong with a scars guard yet that's fair
[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_04]: and then I have to say obviously blackwell from pentasma yes white-haired July been barred
[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_02]: that right it's been barn like I'm not wrong I'm not wrong you're not you're not the most
[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_04]: accurate this wacker of been barns right God I just I posted a thread about how I love that I live
[00:33:41] [SPEAKER_04]: in a time with Kindles and Ben Barnes and DoorDash or something like that and so like I started
[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_04]: seeing Ben Barnes threads which I love and somebody was like my talks to trade is thinking
[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_04]: I could pull Ben Barnes and somebody else replied they're like I've met him he is so nice you could
[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm sorry what did you say Ben Barnes I'm still single my favorite thing from Yallfest last year
[00:34:10] [SPEAKER_04]: it was when someone like they brought him up to leave our do go and she she was just like
[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_01]: he smells incredible Yall before anybody asks Ben Barnes smells incredible oh my god I love that so
[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_04]: much I died that's amazing that's hilarious uh so yeah Eric the crow and blackwell then barns
[00:34:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I love it excellent choices thank you that sound means we have an intruder alert my gosh it's a
[00:34:50] [SPEAKER_02]: repeat offender new author that's very confusing when you say it but friends we have Rebecca Fabian
[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_02]: who is the author of The Lovers it's so pretty for those of you who are on our Patreon and can see
[00:35:04] [SPEAKER_02]: the video she may look a little familiar because we did have her on previously under her pen name
[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_02]: now I can't remember are you faith or Victoria fair totally fair I was faith McLaren of the
[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_02]: two of us I never remember I'm like uh one of them somebody yeah a unit you know it's just like
[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_02]: so we're so excited to have you back especially with this book I'm so excited to talk about it
[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_02]: can you guys for having me oh my gosh I'm so excited can you give our listeners the quick
[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_03]: elevator pitch if they haven't heard about the book yet yes okay so The Lovers is my
[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_03]: solo debut under my real name Rebecca Fabian and it is a sapphic romance about two bisexual women who
[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_03]: fall in love uh when they reconnect at a wedding that they are both working after having a falling
[00:36:00] [SPEAKER_03]: out 10 years before because they had a psychic give them a terror reading that said they were
[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_03]: fated to fall in love that that freaks them out so here they are at this wedding again and all
[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_04]: of this really has come back I love it I love it so much like I have to just start with I love books
[00:36:18] [SPEAKER_04]: that like take place in the wedding industry or like behind the scenes of weddings because I was
[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_04]: a wedding videographer for years oh my gosh how cool yeah so did you have to like do research
[00:36:28] [SPEAKER_04]: into like what it's like to be a wedding vendor or did you just kind of like this is probably
[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_03]: what it's like I did a little I did a little research I mean especially like research about
[00:36:38] [SPEAKER_03]: the wedding industry in Joshua Tree slash Palm Springs because it's a big wedding location and
[00:36:46] [SPEAKER_03]: it's also like a bachelorette location I went to Palm Springs Joshua Tree area before I wrote the
[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_03]: book and there was this like massive bachelorette party that showed up at one of the restaurants
[00:36:59] [SPEAKER_03]: and it was so wild like it was like 40 women oh my god and they were all decked out and so
[00:37:05] [SPEAKER_03]: like I got a lot of inspiration just from like being there but then I did look up stuff about you
[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_03]: know about like vendors and how like what typically does a you know a wedding planner handle versus
[00:37:16] [SPEAKER_03]: what is like handled on site by like whatever location they're using it's it's you know
[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_03]: it's I hope I it sounds like you say good bye hopefully it worked I you know yeah I watched
[00:37:31] [SPEAKER_03]: the wedding planner the film
[00:37:34] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah we should clap there yeah you do a lot from that
[00:37:39] [SPEAKER_02]: well speaking of inspiration like what was kind of the spark that started this story and started
[00:37:45] [SPEAKER_03]: you writing this story the way you did the so the spark the initial idea actually happened
[00:37:51] [SPEAKER_03]: years ago I had a different romance novel that I was trying to sell to Berkeley and it got really
[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_03]: far you know spoiler that happens sometimes and I ended up on the call on a phone call with the editor
[00:38:05] [SPEAKER_03]: that I am not working with Christine Schwartz and see and on that call I was like very you know they
[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_03]: had the question of like what would you write next or what would you like to write and I just
[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_03]: like threw this pitch out there out of thin air um my agent was like what and it was because I was
[00:38:25] [SPEAKER_03]: like I would love to write a bisexual romance about because I'm I'm bisexual I was baby baby by that
[00:38:32] [SPEAKER_03]: moment and I said about a girl who like grew up watching rom-coms with her dad and like sort of
[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_03]: has this idea of what like romance looks like in the movies very hetero non-mative you know stuff
[00:38:47] [SPEAKER_03]: and then realizes that she's spy and like falls in love with a woman and what that looks like
[00:38:53] [SPEAKER_03]: and of course there's a lot of stuff that came after that but that was like the initial idea and
[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_03]: it was just very and it really obviously didn't change that part of it really didn't change that
[00:39:03] [SPEAKER_03]: much and then the tarot element came in later when I got into tarot and I was like that would be a
[00:39:08] [SPEAKER_03]: fun job for her to have and you know you're putting the pieces together of like what who are
[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_03]: these two people and what is going to bring them back together because I knew I wanted it to be
[00:39:17] [SPEAKER_03]: a second chance romance falling out type of a situation so that's sort of both be working
[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_03]: with wedding if they were doing this job and so it was just very but the initial idea was very much
[00:39:29] [SPEAKER_03]: like that happened in that call and then I never forgot about it and even though I wrote a different
[00:39:35] [SPEAKER_03]: book after that they didn't sell also I never forgot about it and so then when it was finally
[00:39:41] [SPEAKER_03]: like okay I'm gonna write this book it was still there it was still good it's the one
[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_03]: that spoke to you it's the one that you needed to write yeah I mean it was very much and I need
[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_03]: to write this book so like the universe was like you're and then it sold you know
[00:39:57] [SPEAKER_01]: yes see the universe was working its magic
[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_04]: there's new so everything I know about like mystic influencing I learned from Vanderpump rolls
[00:40:08] [SPEAKER_04]: but this book is teaching me so much about this world obviously I know a little about tarot
[00:40:14] [SPEAKER_04]: but I did you intend for it to just be a rom-com or like for it to be like kind of a crash course
[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_04]: intro to reiki and crystals in the mystical world yeah I mean I think it so when I think about like
[00:40:29] [SPEAKER_03]: what is an escape with which is what I feel like rom-coms really are and like romance really is
[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_03]: like such a beautiful place to go to get away from everything that's happening in the world
[00:40:42] [SPEAKER_03]: for just a minute and it's very safe I think what is going to be the most entertaining
[00:40:46] [SPEAKER_03]: thing that I can give you guys and for this story I wanted it to feel like a romp so I wanted a lot
[00:40:53] [SPEAKER_03]: of like silliness and all of those elements in there but because I'm dealing with a world that
[00:40:59] [SPEAKER_03]: people really love like they're you know though like I think there's a lot of people who might
[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_03]: think it's not serious like it's very serious like it's you know it's meaningful in these
[00:41:11] [SPEAKER_03]: and because I personally went through a lot of reconstruction from traditional religion and then
[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_03]: learned about non-traditional practices and spirituality I really like value those things
[00:41:27] [SPEAKER_03]: and I had had experiences with soundbabs and I go to hypnotherapy on a regular like
[00:41:33] [SPEAKER_03]: free race in my regular basis so I did kind of want to show that world in like a light hearted
[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_03]: way where it's not like too much if you're like that's not something I'm into but enough to where
[00:41:45] [SPEAKER_03]: it's like this is a world that exists these are things that are out there that one they're tools
[00:41:49] [SPEAKER_03]: that you can use to help you feel connected to something bigger than yourself but also you know
[00:41:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I love it and I think it's fun and I want to share it so yeah I love it because it's like
[00:42:01] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean obviously because it's something that's such a big part of your life like
[00:42:06] [SPEAKER_02]: you're very respectful of it and you're able to show like you don't necessarily like it's not cut
[00:42:11] [SPEAKER_02]: and dry you don't necessarily have to take everything that is being thrown at you in that situation
[00:42:16] [SPEAKER_02]: and I think you do really well with Kit and her readings and showing that to the wider audience
[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_02]: like okay these these are all interpretations and you take what you need. One of the things I
[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_03]: love about like you know occult practices like tarot and other things that are in that witchy
[00:42:36] [SPEAKER_03]: realm is how there's no like right or wrong way to do it which is something that's so different
[00:42:43] [SPEAKER_03]: from traditional religion and I really love that about it. I love that you can do it anyway
[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_03]: how you connect with whatever practice you end up taking up or if you if you do that you get
[00:42:56] [SPEAKER_03]: to be in charge of it like which is just such a free thing which I think goes so well with the story
[00:43:02] [SPEAKER_03]: about like authenticity and like living truthfully and all of that stuff. Absolutely so as we mentioned
[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_02]: earlier you have previously published under a pen name and with a co-author and just last week we
[00:43:16] [SPEAKER_02]: were saying to someone like you kind of only get one debut moment but here you are actually getting
[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_02]: a second debut so what what is it what what does this feel like is it different from the first time
[00:43:30] [SPEAKER_02]: and how are how is everything kind of coming at you I know that you I've been emotional for you so
[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I know oh my gosh I'm so glad that you've been there with me in the DMs of like Feeling the Field
[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's funny because so Horror Hotel which was the first book that I published under that pen name
[00:43:51] [SPEAKER_03]: which came out during the pandemic like kind of late in the pandemic we were still not really doing
[00:43:56] [SPEAKER_03]: in-person events at that time so it was different from it's different from that perspective that like
[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_03]: that wasn't even in the cards there was no there was not going to be an in-person event and
[00:44:06] [SPEAKER_03]: so it was it was a little like strange today like kind of be putting a book out during the pandemic
[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_03]: and then and so for this I think too just having my real name on it is like oh wow that just hits
[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_03]: differently which has been surprising how different it hits because one your deal like I have like it's
[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_03]: like my name and it's like people have an association with me as a person you know there
[00:44:33] [SPEAKER_03]: is a lot of like stuff with like the fact that it's a bisexual book and I came out as
[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_03]: bisexual in a public way and that's like a I mean for me it's been a real journey and this is a
[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_03]: culmination of that journey in a lot of ways so it feels a little bit sweeter and like more vulnerable
[00:44:54] [SPEAKER_03]: just because of that element because it's such a personal story and learning to separate
[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_03]: myself from the book has been a real journey since the book was put out on neck alley and stuff
[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_03]: like that's wild we're with the with like horror hotel and curse crews and ellie is cool now I felt
[00:45:17] [SPEAKER_03]: a little bit detached just because I had that veneer of the fake name right and even though
[00:45:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like definitely horror hotel had some personal stuff in it as well I mean there's
[00:45:29] [SPEAKER_03]: a bisexual character in her hotel and so that was like my first time writing something with that
[00:45:34] [SPEAKER_03]: but so it feels different for very specific reasons I think I just like I go back and forth on if I
[00:45:42] [SPEAKER_04]: want to write under a pen name or not but I'm with you like I'm proud of it like I want it to be my
[00:45:46] [SPEAKER_04]: name yeah even the bad of like somebody's gonna associate this and if they hate it or if they
[00:45:51] [SPEAKER_04]: hate me but like no don't it it's your yeah I mean it's like people write under pen names
[00:45:58] [SPEAKER_03]: for all kinds of reasons right and I think that for us it was very much like we're writing together
[00:46:03] [SPEAKER_03]: this is like kind of its own thing so it makes sense but it is it is really cool when like
[00:46:10] [SPEAKER_03]: you've written something that you feel like so proud of and then it's got your name on it and
[00:46:15] [SPEAKER_03]: then like you're gonna walk into barns and noble and see it yeah you see it yeah I did it I did it
[00:46:25] [SPEAKER_04]: so even the back of the book kind of jokes that kids cards betray her by not warning her about a
[00:46:32] [SPEAKER_04]: breakup or parents divorce and we know that like reading tarot is always open to interpretation
[00:46:38] [SPEAKER_04]: but how important is intention when it comes to your tarot reading and can you kind of give our
[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_04]: listeners a rundown of like reading tarot like what yeah I mean I think the reader when you're
[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_03]: a reader for somebody else especially you really do have to make sure your energy is clear
[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_03]: when you go into that reading and she talked about that in the book you know she's like
[00:47:02] [SPEAKER_03]: got the spray she's trying because she's like all worked up you know what's going on and you know
[00:47:07] [SPEAKER_03]: she's trying to also still be like a good tarot reader because she takes it seriously because
[00:47:12] [SPEAKER_03]: people can take what comes up in something like this whether it's a tarot reading or a psychic
[00:47:17] [SPEAKER_03]: reading or you know any kind of thing very seriously and it really affects them yeah and so she takes a
[00:47:25] [SPEAKER_03]: very seriously I take it very seriously I think that it's really important to you know try to not
[00:47:31] [SPEAKER_03]: bring bias that if you know the person for instance and you think you know what's going on in their
[00:47:36] [SPEAKER_03]: life like you do really kind of have to check that outside because that's not the cards aren't
[00:47:42] [SPEAKER_03]: there for you they're there for them if you're giving a tarot reading and then when you're
[00:47:46] [SPEAKER_03]: giving yourself a reading you it's almost like the opposite you have to like really check
[00:47:51] [SPEAKER_03]: that you're like not just like I know that no I don't have that card back in like that's a way
[00:47:58] [SPEAKER_03]: that's something to come out and so because to me tarot is such a really it's really an intuitive
[00:48:03] [SPEAKER_03]: tool to understand yourself better which is the way Kit really talks about it in the lovers is
[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_03]: you're you're seeking information from the cards and it's not like yeah there may be some
[00:48:14] [SPEAKER_03]: predictability of like what it might it might show you something for the future but that's really
[00:48:18] [SPEAKER_03]: based on your energy right now and what it's showing you is everything that's sort of happening around
[00:48:24] [SPEAKER_03]: you and and how you can work with it so there's no like it's kind of the same way as astrology
[00:48:30] [SPEAKER_03]: is not like future predictive like yeah there are things happening energetically in in the atmosphere
[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_03]: because of planets and all that stuff if you believe in astrology but you're also like
[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_03]: you're active and you are making decisions every day and your actions shape your future so you can
[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_03]: be shown something in the cards that you're like that is not the direction I want to go that is not
[00:48:50] [SPEAKER_03]: the outcome I would like to see and that can be the moment that shifts that outcome for you
[00:48:54] [SPEAKER_02]: definitely I just kind of got chills about it like that yeah I like that okay so I have I've
[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_02]: said this to you before but the story feels so like it's so raw and it feels so much like you
[00:49:07] [SPEAKER_02]: and you can tell that like you poured your whole heart and soul into this book and and now it's
[00:49:14] [SPEAKER_02]: out in the world for other people what how scary is that to kind of put put yourself out in front
[00:49:23] [SPEAKER_02]: of people and how are you managing your mental health during this time because I would be a
[00:49:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I have been and you're so right like it is really personal and I remember when I was writing the book
[00:49:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and I was like I can't believe I'm doing this because like everyone's like anybody can read this
[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_03]: book anybody's gonna be able to pick this book up and read it and I can't believe I am I'm
[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_03]: kind of Scorpio so I am like walled up you know guarded and I but there's something so
[00:50:02] [SPEAKER_03]: about writing that takes those walls down and so I you know when you're telling a story and you
[00:50:08] [SPEAKER_03]: wanted to feel real and you wanted to feel raw which I did want that for this book you do have to
[00:50:14] [SPEAKER_03]: pick those walls down and like recognize that like one once it's written and it's out there and
[00:50:19] [SPEAKER_03]: it's been edited and whatever like it is you do have to put a kind of a wall back up of like
[00:50:25] [SPEAKER_03]: okay now this this exists for like it was funny earlier today I was at my friend Liz's
[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Liz Parker I was at her house and she has a finished copy of The Lovers and it's just
[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_03]: sitting there in her living room and I was like that is so weird my book my book just sitting
[00:50:42] [SPEAKER_03]: in your living room like casually like you know it hasn't been the thing that's like you know
[00:50:47] [SPEAKER_03]: my heart on a page and it was just so surreal but it was also really lovely to like be like
[00:50:52] [SPEAKER_03]: okay it's actually just out there it's going to be sitting in a lot of living rooms you know
[00:50:56] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm not going to know where they put it and I'm not going to know if they put a cup on
[00:51:01] [SPEAKER_03]: top of it like they could use it as you know a door damn like I don't know and that is fine
[00:51:07] [SPEAKER_03]: because now it's like having its own life you know it's living a life that I I don't get to see every
[00:51:12] [SPEAKER_03]: part of I have a child so I kind of already know a little bit about you know you have child
[00:51:17] [SPEAKER_03]: you know a little bit about that that feeling of like at some point they're like out there
[00:51:21] [SPEAKER_03]: and they're doing their thing and you're not really a part of it so there's a little bit of just
[00:51:25] [SPEAKER_03]: like that constantly reminding myself the the lover is living its own life you know so there
[00:51:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's not something I've ever thought of I love that yeah me either I'm like it I mean we always
[00:51:36] [SPEAKER_02]: talk about how like books are authors children but like it never actually occurred to me like
[00:51:42] [SPEAKER_02]: you can treat them like your child like they do go out into the world and have their own life
[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_02]: my mind is blown right now
[00:51:55] [SPEAKER_03]: it's a you know and it's not like you're always like just with kids you know it's not like you're
[00:52:00] [SPEAKER_03]: always like I'm so perfect at this and I don't I'm not freaking out about what's happening to you
[00:52:05] [SPEAKER_03]: but you are able to recognize that like you know in the absence of life there's going to be
[00:52:11] [SPEAKER_03]: good things there's going to be bad things and they're just sort of trying to go with it
[00:52:14] [SPEAKER_03]: and then I've been on deadline so I just haven't had time to totally obsess over what's going on
[00:52:23] [SPEAKER_03]: with it which is very good and healthy for me because I again Scorpio have a tendency I can
[00:52:28] [SPEAKER_03]: obsess so the deadline I recommend it honestly that's fair beyond deadline because you are if
[00:52:37] [SPEAKER_03]: you and I'm a stickler for deadlines so if I'm somebody who's like I'm not missing that deadline
[00:52:41] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's really kind of forced my brain into like boundaries around how I'm what I'm doing
[00:52:48] [SPEAKER_04]: with all of this energy okay taking notes yeah for sure you know the line that literally made me
[00:52:55] [SPEAKER_04]: cackle out loud because it was like I was reading about myself she said Millie has a thing for Gont guys
[00:53:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I was like oh I didn't know I had a type
[00:53:10] [SPEAKER_03]: it's so funny because I when I wrote that line I really didn't get Timmy B. Schell right like
[00:53:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like not getting it you know and and so I kind of but obviously but it was really funny
[00:53:21] [SPEAKER_03]: because not long after that I watched Little Women with my son and my husband and my husband was like
[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_03]: wait a second I'm gonna let go and then for real, like I was like he's really good boyfriend
[00:53:39] [SPEAKER_03]: and it was so it's really good so I've kind of come around I'm like he's talented like I get it from
[00:53:43] [SPEAKER_03]: that but now I'm kind of like okay no I kind of can see what the line attraction is and there are
[00:53:51] [SPEAKER_02]: so many references in this book like the same way that I say Deadpool and Wolverine was written
[00:53:57] [SPEAKER_02]: for Millennials like that's kind of how I feel about this fan girls fan girls and yeah like the
[00:54:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Millennial fan girl like yeah there's I'm just like I see so much of myself in here oh okay okay
[00:54:12] [SPEAKER_04]: what is happening the perfect Nancy Meyers couple is breaking up and it's like
[00:54:17] [SPEAKER_03]: it's a tragedy like I can't call that anything but I'm just so out
[00:54:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean when I was thinking about like what would be because the initial like thing with the
[00:54:31] [SPEAKER_03]: parent was not that was like something that came up when I was creating the story when I was like
[00:54:37] [SPEAKER_03]: doing the outline and stuff and so I was like what would be the like worst thing that could happen
[00:54:44] [SPEAKER_03]: to this girl and it's like I mean the Nancy Meyers couple breaking up like you're thinking like
[00:54:50] [SPEAKER_03]: they're supposed to live happily ever after you know ever ended British chippy not a British chippy
[00:54:58] [SPEAKER_03]: movie is over hey no more we walked out into the sunset you know really don't H.E.A. sorry that doesn't
[00:55:07] [SPEAKER_02]: always happen it's so real it's so real it's so real yeah okay so you're kind of like returning to
[00:55:16] [SPEAKER_02]: your roots in a way in 2026 debuting solo with a YA horror novel lost girl can you tell us anything
[00:55:25] [SPEAKER_03]: about that or anything else that you're currently working on yeah so I so lost girls is about
[00:55:33] [SPEAKER_03]: comes out from Delacorte in 2026 I am still writing it that is the deadline that I am on
[00:55:40] [SPEAKER_03]: um but it is uh it's almost done I feel like if my editor listens to this it's almost done
[00:55:46] [SPEAKER_03]: so it is a it's pitched as yellow jackets meets I know what you did last summer
[00:55:53] [SPEAKER_03]: about eight girls who go on an environmental science trip to this national park and they
[00:56:00] [SPEAKER_03]: go missing and turn up 46 days later but there's only five of them there and when they get so
[00:56:08] [SPEAKER_03]: the story kind of unfolds their back trying to get their lives back in order after just this big
[00:56:15] [SPEAKER_03]: media like coming back into where everybody's been like you were lost and there was like a
[00:56:19] [SPEAKER_03]: media storm and all this stuff and a body surfaces in the lake and it's one of the girls
[00:56:25] [SPEAKER_03]: that was with them and then and then they receive a message saying that they are going to pay for
[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_04]: what happened while they were lost and oh boy look I don't know you go you go ahead I mean
[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean it's it's I'm like I'm like it's real scary I it's it I'm so excited about it oh I
[00:56:45] [SPEAKER_04]: I was then I I know what you did last summer YA yeah like I was that was yeah like the past
[00:56:52] [SPEAKER_04]: few days my husband I was talking about Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Felipe's kid and how like
[00:56:57] [SPEAKER_04]: how does one look so much like their mother and their father's clone at the same time and he was
[00:57:02] [SPEAKER_04]: like I don't know who Ryan Felipe is and I was like Ryan Felipe in the shower and I know what you
[00:57:06] [SPEAKER_04]: did last summer was not everyone's like what are you talking about? What do you mean?
[00:57:12] [SPEAKER_04]: You don't know that? I will never forget. I will never forget rewinding the VA just
[00:57:18] [SPEAKER_04]: tape 5,000 times just to look at that and so like you had me at I know what she did last summer
[00:57:25] [SPEAKER_03]: and Yellow Jackets but it is like truly and it's funny because my film agent also was like it's like
[00:57:31] [SPEAKER_03]: a little pretty little Liars too which I had never seen so I did watch Pretty Little Liars um
[00:57:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like oh I'm just gonna watch like the pilot I never seen it and I got so obsessed with that show.
[00:57:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I was that way with the books. I was just like why have I not been watching this forever? I was
[00:57:50] [SPEAKER_03]: like calling them my best friends. I was like they're my best friends. I love it. It's such chaos and I
[00:57:57] [SPEAKER_03]: lived for it for like three months when I was like last year and but yeah it's really fun and
[00:58:04] [SPEAKER_03]: then I'm also working on a book too that I could the Lovers was two books deal and so
[00:58:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I've got a book too coming out with Berkeley in 2025 so
[00:58:16] [SPEAKER_02]: excited. That one's ready. You're like I'm done with that one we're good. Very exciting. So we have a
[00:58:24] [SPEAKER_04]: couple questions that we always like to ask one of which is we have a segment called
[00:58:29] [SPEAKER_04]: fictional boyfriend of the week or it doesn't have to be a boyfriend that's just what we call
[00:58:33] [SPEAKER_04]: it. Karen's had a fictional granny, we've had fictional found families. Do you have a fictional
[00:58:36] [SPEAKER_04]: character that is like that's my boo thing? That's my best friend? That's my person.
[00:58:43] [SPEAKER_03]: This is where every book movie TV show you've ever assumed? I will say so I recently got,
[00:58:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I do these things where I'll get like obsessed with the show just because and it's like something
[00:58:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm watching at night so obviously pretty little lawyers are on my best friend but since we've
[00:58:59] [SPEAKER_03]: already discussed them all time this show it's so crazy but it's and it's very silly. It's on
[00:59:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Paramount, it's on or like CBS I guess I don't have television I just have Paramount but I just have
[00:59:12] [SPEAKER_03]: streaming so it's on there it's called Ghosts. I don't know if you've ever heard of it. I've
[00:59:16] [SPEAKER_03]: heard of it. I have never watched it. It looks hilarious. It is fully like and I am like
[00:59:23] [SPEAKER_03]: they're all my ghost friends so like the pretty little lawyers are my best friends
[00:59:27] [SPEAKER_03]: they're my ghost friends so it's about this woman who inherits a like manner of state from a
[00:59:33] [SPEAKER_03]: distant relative she never really had contact with and she and her husband go up there like see what
[00:59:37] [SPEAKER_03]: it's like and you know they live in New York and he doesn't want to move there and so he's like
[00:59:42] [SPEAKER_03]: trying to commit to like fix it up and sell it you know and there's it's inhabited by like
[00:59:47] [SPEAKER_03]: just tons of ghosts like all the ghosts that you could imagine from all the times that this
[00:59:52] [SPEAKER_03]: scene some of this yeah and see yesterday's like I think it's in the pilot she falls down the stairs
[01:00:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and she gets like hits her head and when she wakes up she can see the ghost
[01:00:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's just crazy and it's just but it's so silly and they're so cute I just let and it's
[01:00:15] [SPEAKER_03]: like all it's like makes cry sometimes because it's just like about kind of she's helping them
[01:00:20] [SPEAKER_03]: sort of like find their way in their afterlife just like you you know kind of wrapping stuff up and
[01:00:26] [SPEAKER_03]: and you know they're falling in love in their afterlife it's just like kind of weirdly soothing
[01:00:30] [SPEAKER_03]: to me like to think about your afterlife not being like over like like your life isn't over
[01:00:36] [SPEAKER_03]: it's just like a different on a different plane yeah that's so cute I love that I'll leave
[01:00:41] [SPEAKER_03]: it to bump it up my list yeah so like I literally was like I'm not watching this show this is
[01:00:46] [SPEAKER_03]: ridiculous and then my again my husband was like he like watched it while I was like on a
[01:00:51] [SPEAKER_03]: writing retreat and he was like I think you'll like it and so I was like okay okay I'll try it
[01:00:54] [SPEAKER_03]: and then I literally got I got so hooked I love it only because they're just it's so cute yeah we
[01:01:02] [SPEAKER_02]: love it okay so the other question that we always ask is we know we love your books and we're
[01:01:07] [SPEAKER_02]: going to recommend it to everybody but what are you reading and recommending right now
[01:01:11] [SPEAKER_03]: okay so I've read a lot for blurbing this year which has been really fun and new for me so I think most
[01:01:18] [SPEAKER_03]: of them some of them are out some of them aren't out yet so I I mean love and other conspiracies
[01:01:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if you guys know Mallory she's wonderful I love that book so cute and then what
[01:01:30] [SPEAKER_03]: else did I love I I this will be fun as always I'm gonna always because I love
[01:01:35] [SPEAKER_03]: then I love and it's got a queer love story in it as well and I'm just I'm finishing up for book club
[01:01:43] [SPEAKER_03]: vampires of El Norte I'm like not sure if it needs it doesn't have like an X in the end so I'm just
[01:01:49] [SPEAKER_03]: but I'm never sure I'm never sure so I'm just I apologize if I did not pronounce it correctly
[01:01:54] [SPEAKER_03]: which is really cool I'm not done with it but I love it and then I'm also going to read
[01:01:59] [SPEAKER_03]: for blurbing so anywhere you go by Brigitte Marcy so I like I've already got and I love it
[01:02:08] [SPEAKER_03]: so there's a I mean you know there's so many good I feel like 2025 is is going to be so stacked
[01:02:14] [SPEAKER_02]: like it is going to be stacked it's gonna be so I'm so excited before we let you go would you
[01:02:20] [SPEAKER_02]: mind doing like a fun little tarot poll yeah our listeners I'm gonna use this deck which is was a gift
[01:02:29] [SPEAKER_03]: recently and I really like it so I'm gonna use it that it's called the beautiful tarot of the divine
[01:02:38] [SPEAKER_04]: so is it true that you shouldn't buy your own tarot deck that it should like be gifted or find you
[01:02:44] [SPEAKER_03]: so they say that for your first tarot deck okay and I mean you'll hear all kinds of I was very
[01:02:50] [SPEAKER_03]: super suspicious because I was raised in first year and so I was like really scared to get my first
[01:02:58] [SPEAKER_03]: deck to buy it myself so I wanted a deck my friend and I'm my friend Liz Parker once again
[01:03:04] [SPEAKER_03]: showing up on that she's like my best friend she knew I wanted a deck so she got me one
[01:03:09] [SPEAKER_03]: for Christmas and she was like I know you're scared here's your deck but I don't I don't think
[01:03:16] [SPEAKER_03]: that's true because I mean I've bought so many decks yeah my niece wanted one and that I wouldn't
[01:03:22] [SPEAKER_04]: let her buy it because I was I'm with you I was raised Christian and I was super suspicious and I
[01:03:26] [SPEAKER_04]: didn't want her to buy her yeah so maybe I'll get her one yeah you should I mean I have so
[01:03:31] [SPEAKER_03]: many I have a few decks that I really love and the energy of the deck really matters I think
[01:03:37] [SPEAKER_03]: so I have some decks that I don't like it's interesting and especially Oracle decks which are a whole
[01:03:44] [SPEAKER_03]: different thing because they don't necessarily have the tarot follow the rate you know the rate of
[01:03:48] [SPEAKER_03]: rate like like this does but those I've had some very hitter very hitter miss Oracle decks
[01:03:55] [SPEAKER_03]: well it's like I don't like those all right all right you guys so we're gonna do for the
[01:04:03] [SPEAKER_03]: incoherent fangirls and their listeners for the rest of 2024 is that what we want to do yeah okay I'm
[01:04:09] [SPEAKER_03]: gonna cut the deck and then I'm gonna have you guys pick which side you want me to draw from
[01:04:15] [SPEAKER_01]: right or left mine went left me too okay hey oh my goodness I'm like getting chills
[01:04:25] [SPEAKER_03]: oh okay I'm gonna pull three cards okay oh my gosh okay all right so this is going to be the past
[01:04:35] [SPEAKER_03]: so this is energy around you guys the desk card which means transformation so don't get scared
[01:04:41] [SPEAKER_03]: well at least yeah that's right I mean it's past energy it could be recent past it could be
[01:04:48] [SPEAKER_03]: distant past but what the death card represents is it's the card associated with Scorpio which is
[01:04:54] [SPEAKER_03]: you know related to Pluto so it is that sort of like big like big moments of transformation
[01:05:02] [SPEAKER_03]: where you have to kind of leave something behind in order to go into what you really
[01:05:08] [SPEAKER_03]: is really meant for you so for this card when I pulled it out I just really got a feeling
[01:05:15] [SPEAKER_03]: that like there was a certain version of this journey that you guys have been on that maybe
[01:05:18] [SPEAKER_03]: you've had to kind of like let go of um this last year and how that relates to your listeners
[01:05:23] [SPEAKER_03]: how that relates to what you want to do moving forward usually when you see the death card it's
[01:05:28] [SPEAKER_03]: going to be representing a transformation that's positive that if you leave something behind
[01:05:33] [SPEAKER_03]: you're going to be given you're gonna you know you're gonna it's going to lead you into
[01:05:37] [SPEAKER_03]: what's really meant for you so that and that's sort of what I'm here I'm feeling from it is that
[01:05:43] [SPEAKER_02]: first instinct was in August I had I switched my work schedule like my day job schedule
[01:05:50] [SPEAKER_02]: and now we have um I have Thursdays off now which is a huge change for me but it opens up our
[01:05:58] [SPEAKER_02]: schedule for the podcast too and it's made it so much easier for Mandy um out on the east
[01:06:04] [SPEAKER_02]: coast to like record and not be up late until night or something yeah I'm like I would be recording
[01:06:10] [SPEAKER_02]: and like dying yeah and I'm just like oh we let I left sleep in the past so that we could expand
[01:06:18] [SPEAKER_03]: this is no wonder being essentially considering the next card that I pulled is the full which
[01:06:22] [SPEAKER_03]: is the first card of the major arcana which is it's the beginning of the journey and it's
[01:06:28] [SPEAKER_03]: sort of and that's this present energy right now so it sort of indicates that there's a new
[01:06:34] [SPEAKER_03]: something coming and that you are jumping into something honestly with the fool it's very much
[01:06:43] [SPEAKER_03]: like you're just gonna go for it and you're going to uh see you know trust that there will be steps
[01:06:50] [SPEAKER_03]: that need to be there and everything's going to be there and the fool is like very creative
[01:06:54] [SPEAKER_03]: it's very like I'm just taking an adventure I'm out on you know on this journey and you're
[01:07:00] [SPEAKER_03]: gonna trust that there's gonna be what you need on the end on the journey for you we're both year
[01:07:05] [SPEAKER_04]: of the snake in the chinese zodiac and next year is year of the snake and so we've been like
[01:07:11] [SPEAKER_04]: manifesting that like next year is our year next year of your next year is our year big things
[01:07:16] [SPEAKER_04]: are gonna happen and so the start of something is now leading into that yeah well and it's
[01:07:24] [SPEAKER_03]: interesting because the last party pulled is three of wands so wands are the creative
[01:07:28] [SPEAKER_03]: suits they're related to the fire to fire so fire signs and the threes are all about celebration
[01:07:36] [SPEAKER_03]: so threes in every single uh you know suit of the deck there's a different three and three of wands
[01:07:45] [SPEAKER_03]: is celebrating something creative so usually dealing with like bringing people together and sort of like
[01:07:52] [SPEAKER_03]: there's some kind of celebration it's yeah it's a three so it's not like you know a massive
[01:07:57] [SPEAKER_03]: thing but it can be whatever it is that you're working on depending on the level that you're at
[01:08:02] [SPEAKER_03]: like it can regardless it's it's a celebration and usually with the three it's very positive so
[01:08:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Mandy is currently editing her debut fantasy oh my gosh I'm just like it's gonna be
[01:08:17] [SPEAKER_02]: the way that I have chills validating the way that I have chills right now
[01:08:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I love that oh my god oh yeah so you could vary I mean especially with in relation to your your
[01:08:31] [SPEAKER_03]: podcast and your patreon and the people that are in this community with you like celebrating
[01:08:36] [SPEAKER_03]: success with you guys and like with what you've put your creatively putting your energy into that
[01:08:42] [SPEAKER_03]: makes so much I could see it I could see it we're just gonna uh well you'll have to see it
[01:08:50] [SPEAKER_04]: because Karen has bad news for you I do I do have a little bit of bad news for you
[01:08:54] [SPEAKER_02]: once I mean you're you've now been on the podcast twice and
[01:08:58] [SPEAKER_02]: now that you have been on the podcast several times and even before that honestly you are
[01:09:03] [SPEAKER_02]: actually legally obligated to come back for all future book releases so you're gonna have to be
[01:09:09] [SPEAKER_03]: here on the journey with us yeah and just see everything next year three three five
[01:09:14] [SPEAKER_03]: oh my god I can't I will always come back you guys are so much fun to talk to you and just
[01:09:20] [SPEAKER_02]: incredible it did oh my face hurt I'm truly like I I need to like exercise my cheeks more they're
[01:09:27] [SPEAKER_02]: like they're like they're like tired they're like stop it oh my gosh this has been so much
[01:09:34] [SPEAKER_02]: fun I still have so excited for you guys thank you so much for this so much this has been
[01:09:39] [SPEAKER_02]: a blast everybody when this episode comes out the lovers will be out in the world

[01:09:53] [SPEAKER_02]: cry like it just I truly truly like I opened my package and I was like tearing up like looking at
[01:10:00] [SPEAKER_02]: it I'm like it's here it's here I feel like I've been waiting my whole life for this right
[01:10:06] [SPEAKER_03]: it does feel like it's been so long and then all of a sudden it's here and here how do we get here
[01:10:12] [SPEAKER_02]: but yeah when this episode comes out it is officially out in the world everybody go pick up a copy
[01:10:17] [SPEAKER_02]: walk into your favorite bookstore pick up don't use it as a door jam no that's bad energy we don't
[01:10:24] [SPEAKER_03]: want yeah you need the good energy that it's so pretty don't cook up yeah yeah you can it's yours
[01:10:30] [SPEAKER_04]: but you probably should put it on your read it and put it on your bookshelf put it on display

[01:11:22] [SPEAKER_02]: we're celebrating big next year is year of the snake we are both snakes we are going to kill it
[01:11:27] [SPEAKER_04]: 2025 baby I'm really scared of next year though because Taylor Swift is also a year of the snake
[01:11:33] [SPEAKER_02]: and reputation and all of that only good things only good things my cheeks hurt right too okay
[01:11:44] [SPEAKER_02]: now we have an announcement this is so exciting okay y'all next week we will be talking to you

[01:11:58] [SPEAKER_02]: oh I'm so obsessed with his wife and their whole love story and their whole relationship like
