[00:00:00] I will have you know, I had to like, I have my whole setup including a very full cup of

[00:00:04] tea. Like it's right there at the top. Had to move my whole setup over because he was

[00:00:09] not, he was not in the frame and I was like, this is bad juju. That is bad karma. If

[00:00:15] he's not in the frame then what is it all for? Welcome to The Incoherent Fangirl.

[00:00:23] Where we haven't quite hopped off the entangled train just yet.

[00:00:28] We just love entangled. We love Red Tower. We love all of them.

[00:00:33] Sorry not sorry. Hey publicity. Hey publicity.

[00:00:36] Hey publicity. We love them a lot.

[00:00:39] Yeah. I forgot that it was my turn to say my name. I don't have a brain today. I'm

[00:00:46] Mandy of the Deadlands. And I'm Karen from Santa Monica.

[00:00:49] You like how I'm just sitting here staring at you like.

[00:00:52] Yeah, I'm like Mandy. My turn.

[00:00:55] It's your turn. To be fair to Mandy she is a little under the weather so.

[00:01:00] Yeah, I got a little sore throat.

[00:01:04] Alright in our timeline it is May 9th. In y'all's timeline it is May 17th which

[00:01:14] is crazy. Middle of the month.

[00:01:16] My twins are, that's their last day of school that they have to, actually I think

[00:01:21] they're out of school by this time. That's crazy.

[00:01:23] Because they're exempting finals. Yeah. Nice. My kid is not out till June so yeah.

[00:01:29] Early June. And then this is how I know I'm doing something right in terms of parenting.

[00:01:34] She voluntarily is going to summer school. Not just any summer school, a math specific

[00:01:41] summer school. I don't know what I did to convince her that school was a good thing.

[00:01:46] True. Wow.

[00:01:47] I guess, I guess, I don't know but here we are.

[00:01:50] Watch she's going to graduate at like 12.

[00:02:00] This week in fangirling Mandy what did you do?

[00:02:03] Not a lot. There was one very cute day where my little nephew who's six months old

[00:02:10] had an ear infection so my sister had to make him an appointment and it was the

[00:02:16] same time as my niece's school like pick up so she's like I can't be in two places

[00:02:21] at once and I'm like Mimi we'll go get her. So I busted her out of school early.

[00:02:26] She was so surprised. We did a bunch of crafts. I really, really tried to get her

[00:02:31] to make some Mother's Day cards for my sister and my mom and our grandmother.

[00:02:35] No Mimi how do you write happy friendship day? How do you write happy 100 days of

[00:02:40] school because I want to go back to that. I spent some time with my girl.

[00:02:44] I nearly, my legs nearly decided they were leaving my body because my husband was

[00:02:51] out of town last week and I love to do projects when he's gone and so I

[00:02:54] decided to install caulk and paint the all of the baseboards in the main

[00:03:01] areas of my home. So that was lay on the ground to tape and then get back

[00:03:05] up and then lay on the ground to staple in all of the it's not baseboards

[00:03:09] it was quarter round staple in all of the quarter round and then get

[00:03:12] back up and move around then paint or caulk then paint then take all the

[00:03:16] next day I hurt my hair hurt everything hurt but especially like my legs.

[00:03:22] So if you're listening to this be not stupid stretch stretch before you do

[00:03:30] projects and I tell you that because while I was doing this project I

[00:03:37] started listening to the audiobook of the North Wind by Alexandria Warwick.

[00:03:42] So the book was released in 2022 but they've just recently released the

[00:03:46] audiobook this month and I got an ALC which is an advanced listener copy from

[00:03:51] Libro FM Libro.fm.

[00:03:54] I think that it was originally indie pub and it's being released as trad

[00:03:59] because I have an arc of it very nice so I think I think it's being

[00:04:04] picked up as trad so that's maybe part of it.

[00:04:07] I'm not sure but yeah anyways.

[00:04:09] Okay so this is a Beauty and the Beast meets Hades and Persephone kind of

[00:04:14] retelling and it follows Wren of Edgewood.

[00:04:17] So she's an identical twin her sister is Elora and they are identical except

[00:04:21] for Wren has a facial scar and they are also orphans their parents succumb

[00:04:25] to the famine that was like rocking there that is currently rocking their

[00:04:31] county city whatever you call it.

[00:04:32] So Wren is basically Sarah Archeron.

[00:04:36] She's hunting she's gathering she's doing whatever she can to make sure that

[00:04:41] she and Elora survive.

[00:04:43] Elora is sitting there apparently their parents raised them for whatever

[00:04:48] reason that Wren had to be the one that everybody relies on and Elora just

[00:04:54] has to look pretty.

[00:04:55] She's an Elaine.

[00:04:56] So in this world there are four gods and they are the four winds and they

[00:05:01] control the seasons.

[00:05:02] So in Edgewood the North Wind comes once every few decades and collects this

[00:05:08] unwed woman and she'll never be seen again.

[00:05:10] And so all of the villagers are like he's sacrificing these women we have to

[00:05:14] sacrifice these women to this god.

[00:05:16] It's freezing here all of the time but like to keep it to where it's just

[00:05:20] freezing and we're not literally freezing to death constantly and he's

[00:05:23] due for a visit.

[00:05:24] So when he comes he always chooses one of the prettiest girls and Wren is

[00:05:29] sure like he's going to take Elora.

[00:05:31] So she gets like when he comes they have like a dinner with the I think it's

[00:05:35] like the 12 most beautiful girls in Edgewood and Elora is one of them and

[00:05:39] Wren is there as her like sponsor or whatever.

[00:05:42] You have to have like someone there with you.

[00:05:44] A lot of women have their mothers.

[00:05:46] So Wren gets sassy and the North Wind is like draws attention to Elora

[00:05:51] and the North Wind is like all right I'll take that one out of spite.

[00:05:56] Wren has pissed him off so he's like I'm going to take your sister

[00:05:59] then.

[00:05:59] So Wren is full of just as much spite and again she's an identical twin.

[00:06:04] So the North Wind tells Elora go prepare to leave Edgewood.

[00:06:08] You have half an hour or whatever to pack your things.

[00:06:12] So they go home where Wren drugs Elora.

[00:06:14] She'll go to sleep and wraps herself up in a cloak and follows the North

[00:06:19] Wind through the Deadlands where I'm from back to his home.

[00:06:22] So the North Wind who we come to know as Boreas is his name takes

[00:06:27] Elora to his citadel and marries her.

[00:06:30] And once they are married, once the oaths have been said, Wren reveals

[00:06:34] her face and her husband's fate and she's like you're married to the

[00:06:37] wrong twin buddy.

[00:06:39] It's a slow burn enemies to lovers.

[00:06:42] I want to say like it's got a lot of twists that you don't see coming

[00:06:46] but you also know the story of Beauty and the Beast right.

[00:06:49] Right.

[00:06:50] So she like she befriends one of his brothers who is not exactly to

[00:06:55] be trusted and gives like Gaston vibes.

[00:06:58] And so you know the path that it's going to take but it also like I said

[00:07:03] gives a lot of Hades and Persephone vibes where like this King of Frost

[00:07:07] is God of Frost and cold.

[00:07:09] This is heart warmed a little bit by a little sunshine coming in here.

[00:07:13] A few it's been a couple of years now.

[00:07:15] It was the Once Upon a Book Club Romantic Box book.

[00:07:20] So I'm excited to go through the box and open all of the gifts because

[00:07:23] since I've been doing audio.

[00:07:24] I don't know what page I'm on.

[00:07:26] Very close to the end and I've enjoyed it.

[00:07:28] I'll keep I don't know if any more books are out in the series yet.

[00:07:32] I think that they did a book two with the second box.

[00:07:35] Yeah but I don't.

[00:07:37] They did the book two but I don't know that the other ones are out.

[00:07:41] Yeah that's what I'm thinking.

[00:07:42] I think that the second Romantic Box was that and that they haven't

[00:07:45] done anymore.

[00:07:46] I'm very like if I had like another extra hour today I would have

[00:07:49] finished it because like I said audio and I can listen to all I'm

[00:07:52] working.

[00:07:53] And I also finished Five Broken Blades by May Corland.

[00:07:56] We talked about it a lot last week so just like a one sentence

[00:07:59] synopsis the five best liars in Yusan come together to kill the

[00:08:04] king and all of them have their own motives for doing so.

[00:08:07] So it's Six of Crows style.

[00:08:10] If you love the dregs you're gonna love this book.

[00:08:12] Ty Young has my heart and my soul.

[00:08:14] The ending was everything.

[00:08:16] I kept like I was sitting on the couch next to Josh and I was

[00:08:19] like this is happening.

[00:08:22] No wait.

[00:08:22] It's not.

[00:08:22] Is this.

[00:08:23] No it isn't what I thought.

[00:08:24] No it's not.

[00:08:26] Oh I can't see.

[00:08:26] Just going back and forth.

[00:08:27] I got I was DMing with May like oh my gosh I just.

[00:08:31] So.

[00:08:31] Oh I can't wait.

[00:08:33] Five Broken Blades.

[00:08:34] So so so good.

[00:08:36] That has been my week.

[00:08:37] We had a very fun day today we got a COVID diagnosis.

[00:08:40] We had severe weather that's coming back tomorrow.

[00:08:43] I have a sore throat so it's just.

[00:08:45] It's been a day.

[00:08:48] What did you do this week?

[00:08:50] So I have a bunch of stuff written down from like the week when we.

[00:08:55] Last week when we.

[00:08:55] Cheater cheater booger eater.

[00:08:57] Cause I really haven't heard anything since then.

[00:09:01] So I finished the Crave series I finished Cherish which was fun.

[00:09:05] I read Sweet Nightmare obviously.

[00:09:07] I read The Atlas Six by Olive E Blake.

[00:09:10] Which was fun.

[00:09:11] It was I feel like it's really really hyped and I was kind of like

[00:09:15] expecting it to be amazing and it was just kind of okay sorry.

[00:09:19] I feel like everybody thinks I was obsessed with it but I don't think I gave it a five.

[00:09:22] I don't know.

[00:09:23] But I think Beth apologized to me about it and I was like I don't I mean I liked

[00:09:27] it but I don't think.

[00:09:28] It's fine.

[00:09:29] It's not bad.

[00:09:30] It's it's a solid it's a solid.

[00:09:32] I just love Nico.

[00:09:33] I just love Nico.

[00:09:34] We do love Nico.

[00:09:35] And then I finished my reread of the original Percy Jackson series so I read

[00:09:40] The Titans Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth and The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan.

[00:09:44] It was fun.

[00:09:45] It was a good time.

[00:09:46] I was like sitting there like okay things are starting to come back to me.

[00:09:50] I know what's happening.

[00:09:51] I know the twist.

[00:09:52] Why aren't you guys figuring this out?

[00:09:54] Oh wait I've already read this.

[00:09:56] That's why I know.

[00:09:58] You guys are living it.

[00:09:59] But it's you know it's Percy Jackson like I'm I can't say any bad things

[00:10:05] about Percy Jackson.

[00:10:06] I'm looking forward to I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to

[00:10:10] continue reading Rick Riordan slowly through pub date order.

[00:10:15] I have a whole list.

[00:10:17] So he's got a couple other series that are they're all kind of set in the same

[00:10:22] world but they don't all connect like there's one that's some Egyptian ones.

[00:10:26] Yeah there's like there's like the Egyptian gods and then maybe Roman.

[00:10:31] I think and there's the Cain Chronicles.

[00:10:34] I can't exactly I have a whole section.

[00:10:35] I can't see them though.

[00:10:37] And then there's obviously there's new Percy Jackson so slowly I'm going to

[00:10:41] go through those.

[00:10:42] They are all apparently set in the same world even though they don't all like

[00:10:47] interconnect gods or whatever.

[00:10:49] Yeah right.

[00:10:50] But yeah I'm excited to do that.

[00:10:51] And then I read the fake dating game by Timothy Janoski.

[00:10:56] So good.

[00:10:57] I think is this his.

[00:11:00] I don't know but it was really good.

[00:11:01] It was so you've got oh I don't I didn't write down names because I'm

[00:11:05] really smart please hold.

[00:11:08] Jupiter music.

[00:11:10] I do this every week.

[00:11:12] You think I would know better by now but I don't.

[00:11:16] So you've got Holden James who lost his mom years ago like right before I

[00:11:23] think high school graduation and he's still kind of like dealing with the

[00:11:27] grief of leaving her they were really close and all of that.

[00:11:31] And so he's decided that he wants to go on their favorite game show which

[00:11:37] is kind of like the prices right plus jeopardy.

[00:11:43] So there's like it's like the price is right where you have to do all the

[00:11:47] grocery stuff but there's also trivia questions and things like that.

[00:11:49] And so he is decided that he's going to propose this idea to go with his

[00:11:55] boyfriend where they audition together and they're going to go be on this

[00:11:58] game show that he loves.

[00:11:59] And as he's like about to ask his boyfriend decides that they're no

[00:12:06] longer working and he breaks up with him.

[00:12:08] And so Holden is obviously very upset by this but because he has paid for

[00:12:16] a hotel and they live in New York the auditions are in L.A.

[00:12:21] He's already paid for everything and he can't get refunds.

[00:12:25] So he's like I'm just going to go anyways and hope for us.

[00:12:28] And so but the only problem is you have to audition as a pair.

[00:12:32] So he needs somebody to be his partner.

[00:12:35] And at the hotel that he booked there is a what are they called at the front

[00:12:41] desk people not a not a receptionist.

[00:12:44] I don't you know what you know what I'm talking about a reservationist

[00:12:47] the person who is at the front desk of a hotel.

[00:12:51] He goes and is and they have like this really silly interaction where

[00:12:57] Tossier's Yeah.

[00:12:59] Yes.

[00:13:00] Yeah.

[00:13:00] Yes.

[00:13:01] Thank you.

[00:13:02] Okay.

[00:13:02] I was like I was like it's something with a C but I can't remember.

[00:13:05] I was like Tossier is just the person who does the activities but they

[00:13:08] can also be like they can also be.

[00:13:10] Yeah.

[00:13:10] Yeah.

[00:13:11] And so he has this interaction with him and his name is Leo and Leo's

[00:13:19] kind of like a smart ass at times but I love that in like in like not

[00:13:24] like a douchebag way though like he's just kind of a smart ass.

[00:13:28] And so they kind of hit it off and things happen or almost happen.

[00:13:35] And then there but Holden's like really, really drunk and Leo's like, no,

[00:13:40] no, I don't do that when people are really, really drunk.

[00:13:43] And I'm like, that's a good man.

[00:13:45] Yeah.

[00:13:46] Because you never know the bars on the floor.

[00:13:49] And so yeah, it really is next day.

[00:13:53] They like plan to meet up for lunch and do the thing that they didn't do.

[00:13:58] Because Holden was very, very drunk, but Leo gets fired from his job and is

[00:14:03] like throwing himself a pity party.

[00:14:05] And Holden's like, wait, what if we go on the show together and pretend

[00:14:11] like we're dating because the they're more likely to like accept people who

[00:14:18] are who have a prior relationship.

[00:14:20] So then they start dating and training for this show and it's very cute.

[00:14:26] And it's a capital R romance.

[00:14:28] So, you know, it ends with an HTA and it's Timothy Genovsky.

[00:14:32] Like I love the way he writes.

[00:14:35] It's so fun.

[00:14:36] It's so gay.

[00:14:37] It's so amazing.

[00:14:38] I love it.

[00:14:39] It's, it's so good.

[00:14:41] It's so good.

[00:14:42] Fun fact when I was like in high school, I think maybe early college, I

[00:14:47] said that if I had a son, I'd want to name him Holden, but it's from, it's

[00:14:51] because of Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye.

[00:14:55] Love that name.

[00:14:56] Cute.

[00:14:57] I love it.

[00:14:58] So, yeah.

[00:14:59] And I think that's, I mean, I'm currently reading Heavenbreaker by Sarah Wolf.

[00:15:06] Yeah.

[00:15:07] We will talk about that.

[00:15:08] Why would you tell us what that's about or why would I say anything

[00:15:11] about when we had Sarah Dallas?

[00:15:14] Exactly.

[00:15:14] And other than that, I did go to Y'all West.

[00:15:19] Yeah.

[00:15:19] And it was so much fun.

[00:15:21] I put on makeup because of you that day.

[00:15:23] So the same day that her legs tried to run away from her, mine did the same

[00:15:29] thing, but because I was walking around a high school like a crazy person all day.

[00:15:34] It's like, wait, are we both dying?

[00:15:36] We literally, my whole body was dying.

[00:15:41] I, so, you know, it was a full day thing.

[00:15:44] Once everything ended around like six, 15 ish, I got in the car and drove

[00:15:50] from Santa Monica to Anaheim to meet up with Heather and have dinner.

[00:15:53] And I'm standing here waiting for everybody to come so we can have dinner.

[00:15:59] And I'm like dying.

[00:16:00] I'm like, everything hurts.

[00:16:02] I need, they won't seat us until the whole party is here.

[00:16:06] And I need to sit down.

[00:16:08] You guys, I need you to hurry up.

[00:16:10] I'm dying.

[00:16:12] As soon as they showed up, I'm like, who has drugs?

[00:16:16] I need pain medication right now.

[00:16:19] And thank God somebody had some ibuprofen.

[00:16:21] And you should have, I should have been there because I am never without ibuprofen

[00:16:26] ever, I needed it so bad.

[00:16:28] I was dying.

[00:16:30] So yeah, but the Y'all West was fun.

[00:16:32] We did talk about after Y'all Fest was kind of a hot mess and chaotic.

[00:16:38] We were like worried whether Y'all West would like still be as exciting

[00:16:43] as it was the first year.

[00:16:44] So for the Fierce Friday, like preview event, it was bad.

[00:16:50] It was chaos.

[00:16:52] It was like, what is going on over there?

[00:16:54] So it was a lot of, it was a lot of like miscommunication, like the volunteers,

[00:17:02] some volunteers told some people this stuff and some told this.

[00:17:06] And then it was really conflicting information.

[00:17:08] So they did this thing.

[00:17:09] First of all, I got an email, I drove down and I got an email after we got to

[00:17:14] our hotel and checked in that said that doors would open at 2 30.

[00:17:18] The event started at four and we had got to our hotel about two o'clock and I was

[00:17:22] like, okay, we'll get some rest before we head over.

[00:17:24] No, immediately got back in the car and drove out to the library because

[00:17:30] that's where it was being held because doors opened at 2 30 and I knew

[00:17:33] they were capping certain lines.

[00:17:35] Yeah.

[00:17:36] And so when we went in, they're like, you can get one wristband per hour.

[00:17:41] So depending on, because there were certain authors who were

[00:17:44] wristbanded and others who weren't.

[00:17:46] So we went in, they're like one wristband per hour.

[00:17:49] So there were certain authors for the first hour and certain

[00:17:51] authors for the second hour.

[00:17:52] And so we went and we got, you know, wristbands for Stephanie Garber.

[00:17:58] I got one for Stephanie Garber for the first hour.

[00:18:00] My daughter got one for Tracy Dion for the first hour.

[00:18:03] And so at that point I was like, okay, that's going to be it.

[00:18:07] But as we were standing in Tracy Dion's line, I just kind of

[00:18:10] was talking to the volunteers and like, so I know they said like

[00:18:13] only one per person per hour.

[00:18:15] They're like, well, who do you want?

[00:18:17] And so they gave me another wristband even though I already had one, which

[00:18:21] was like the first like miscommunication, which I mean, benefits me, but

[00:18:25] like again, it's not nice for everybody else who only got one.

[00:18:29] Exactly.

[00:18:30] And I wasn't like trying to circumvent anything.

[00:18:32] I just kind of was like, I just want to clarify because

[00:18:36] everybody seems confused.

[00:18:37] So then when we were standing in line for Stephanie Garber, waiting

[00:18:42] for everything to start, apparently they were doing, if you bought a book

[00:18:47] at the little like bookstore that they had set up, like the table

[00:18:50] set up for selling books, you got a ticket for like a priority ticket.

[00:18:54] So you could choose one author that you could jump to the front of the

[00:18:57] line and it could be any of the authors, but apparently, so this was

[00:19:02] where it got really confusing because people were told that once you had

[00:19:06] this ticket, you could pick a line and you could jump to the front of the

[00:19:09] line and people were told that's all you need.

[00:19:12] You can jump to the front of whatever line other people were told.

[00:19:15] If you're going to do that for an author with a wristband,

[00:19:19] you have to get a wristband as well.

[00:19:21] So there were people who were in line with the priority

[00:19:24] ticket for Stephanie Garber.

[00:19:27] Did not get a wristband.

[00:19:28] And then we're told they needed a wristband after they were all gone.

[00:19:32] And so it was, it was a mess.

[00:19:35] It was.

[00:19:36] I just don't understand how like from year to year, it can go from so great to so bad.

[00:19:42] Like I felt horrible bringing Josh and the other twin and you over to, and Angie

[00:19:49] over to YallFest on how great it was, you know, year before last.

[00:19:53] And then it was like, we got one arc.

[00:19:56] There were no like actual events.

[00:19:58] Like the year that the first year I went there was tea parties and ice

[00:20:01] cream socials and you know, Chloe Gong had her secret Shanghai.

[00:20:06] Speakeasy thing like none of that.

[00:20:09] They knew anything.

[00:20:10] It was happens.

[00:20:11] So that was, so that was really like, it was, and they did it at a

[00:20:16] different library branch.

[00:20:18] So last year they did it at one of the smaller branches and they had a

[00:20:22] huge outdoor space where they just lined up all the tables and you could see

[00:20:27] all of the authors.

[00:20:28] So you could like, and there were wristbands obviously.

[00:20:30] So you would go get whatever wristband and go.

[00:20:33] And then if you had time and if the author still had time during

[00:20:36] their signing, you could hop into different lines really easily.

[00:20:39] This year they did it at the main branch and it was inside the library.

[00:20:43] So everybody was spread out into different parts of the library.

[00:20:47] So you couldn't see what anything looked like where you were going.

[00:20:50] Yeah.

[00:20:50] And on top of that, I swear to God there was no fucking AC.

[00:20:55] We are in Santa Monica in freaking April, May, and it was hot as all hell.

[00:21:02] Like sweating.

[00:21:04] It was terrible.

[00:21:06] And it was like the main part of the library was like hot.

[00:21:09] And then you'd get into like the kids and the teen section, which was a

[00:21:12] whole separate like room.

[00:21:14] And that was even hotter because it was a smaller space with more people.

[00:21:18] It was terrible, terrible.

[00:21:21] So that was meh.

[00:21:23] And then for the event itself, normally what they do with like the

[00:21:29] wristbanded author signings is you can get a wristband an hour before

[00:21:34] the signing, right?

[00:21:35] They didn't do that this year.

[00:21:37] They had specific times for each author and it was super confusing.

[00:21:43] And then it was also like, you can't line up until 30 minutes

[00:21:47] before the distribution time.

[00:21:49] And then they actually had people who were like standing where the

[00:21:55] lines would start and be like, you can't line up if you line up,

[00:21:58] you're not getting a wristband.

[00:22:00] But then you would have people who would congregate near that spot.

[00:22:05] And then it was like a stampede to get into line and it was so dangerous.

[00:22:09] They did that with Leigh Bardugo at YallFest.

[00:22:12] It was the line will open at nine and there were people lined up at

[00:22:15] 630 and they let them, like, they're like, okay, this is the line.

[00:22:19] If the line starts at nine, then this should be, you can't

[00:22:22] congregate over here.

[00:22:24] You can't come running up, be here at nine.

[00:22:26] That's not fair.

[00:22:27] Well, not only it wasn't not fair.

[00:22:29] It was especially where at the high school, it was not safe.

[00:22:33] No, it was not safe at all because not only were you having people

[00:22:37] literally stampeding to get into line, but there are steps around there.

[00:22:41] I mean, downtown Charleston.

[00:22:43] Yeah.

[00:22:44] And with uneven sidewalks that are hundreds of years old.

[00:22:48] You had one volunteer being like, this is where the official line

[00:22:52] is starting, you have people starting to line up and then another

[00:22:54] volunteer is like, oh no, just kidding.

[00:22:56] It's actually over here.

[00:22:57] And so you have people who were, went from first in line to like 50th in

[00:23:01] line and it was just, it was really chaotic.

[00:23:04] One thing that I did appreciate was they did have some of like the

[00:23:08] bigger name authors like Adam and Tahira and Alex Astor, like they

[00:23:14] had them signing for more than an hour, like they were scheduled

[00:23:17] for more than an hour, which is nice.

[00:23:20] Like, I mean, like if they're willing to do that, then that's great.

[00:23:23] Especially for the bigger names where, you know, you're going to have long

[00:23:26] lines because even then if you have a wristband, you're not guaranteed

[00:23:29] if they run out of time.

[00:23:31] So that was nice.

[00:23:33] I realized when I was looking at the schedule, I was very confused

[00:23:36] as to why Victoria Aviard was only signing for an hour and

[00:23:39] music festival.

[00:23:41] Well, she was going to the music festival.

[00:23:43] She was also on like several different panels.

[00:23:46] So they had her at a hard, like 100 wristbands.

[00:23:49] That's it.

[00:23:50] Yeah.

[00:23:50] Which I totally get, but it really sucked being number 102.

[00:23:54] Oh yeah.

[00:23:55] It really sucked.

[00:23:56] Oh yeah.

[00:23:57] But it was, I mean, it was fine.

[00:23:59] Like my daughter, I had a friend with me, Joanna was with me and my

[00:24:05] daughter decided she wanted to spend time running around with Joanna

[00:24:08] rather than being plastered by my side.

[00:24:10] So we like split up for a good portion of it, but it was fine.

[00:24:13] We got some arcs, we got to see some people and it was really fun

[00:24:18] to just kind of be in the atmosphere.

[00:24:21] There was one, there was one girl where I was like, I was standing in line

[00:24:26] for, to get a book signed by Tracy Wolf and a girl comes over and I think

[00:24:31] she's talking to her, maybe her mom.

[00:24:33] And she literally comes up and she's like, who the fuck is Stephanie

[00:24:37] Garber?

[00:24:37] And I was like, ma'am, you're in the wrong place.

[00:24:40] But then second last, she's like, I hope to God, I'm never a part of that

[00:24:44] fandom.

[00:24:45] Like, this is fucking stupid because apparently she was, she was stuck.

[00:24:49] She like almost got ran over because of the way that they did the Stephanie

[00:24:52] Garber line, which is if that's your first experience with, with, you know,

[00:24:57] like people in the fandom, which again, you can't encompass the entire

[00:25:00] fandom because of just that.

[00:25:02] But if that's your first experience, I get it.

[00:25:04] And then I think I texted you about it.

[00:25:06] Like I wasn't trying to get it.

[00:25:08] I was trying to go, the line was here and I was on this side and I

[00:25:11] needed to be on this side.

[00:25:12] And I just wanted to go through the line to get to the other side.

[00:25:16] And I literally, I was like, hi, sorry.

[00:25:18] Can I just squeeze that past you?

[00:25:19] I'm just trying to get to the other side and this girl straight up

[00:25:22] death glared me and I'm like, you, you do not belong here.

[00:25:26] What the fuck?

[00:25:26] Nothing is that I was like, that's not a book person.

[00:25:29] No, no, she doesn't even go here.

[00:25:32] She doesn't even go here.

[00:25:33] You're not one of us.

[00:25:34] Oh, it was so gross.

[00:25:37] So, uh, yeah, that was, that was fun times.

[00:25:41] I just want to go back to like my first year of y'all fest.

[00:25:44] Yeah.

[00:25:44] Cause that was like, I told you there is one person who will get me to

[00:25:48] y'all fest this year and it's Tahitamafi.

[00:25:50] If she's going to be there, I will go.

[00:25:52] If not, I may have to sit this one out because last year was such a bad

[00:25:56] experience as far as like opposite of the first y'all fest.

[00:26:01] And I had like bragged about how great it was and brought all of these people

[00:26:05] here, like you've got to come to y'all fest, you've got to see Charleston.

[00:26:09] And it was just like, the weather was terrible.

[00:26:12] There was no event, nothing.

[00:26:14] But yeah, I mean, overall, like it was a good time.

[00:26:17] Like I was, it was really nice to be able to see friends, like people.

[00:26:21] So last year when we went, we made friends with the people

[00:26:24] in line in front of us and they were here again.

[00:26:28] And so, um, we all kind of like got to see each other again.

[00:26:31] It was very cool and made new friends.

[00:26:34] Was that?

[00:26:34] I got a FaceTime.

[00:26:35] You did.

[00:26:36] We, um, went to Robbie's sliding line and we were talking, we were talking

[00:26:41] about how sad that Mandy couldn't be there.

[00:26:43] So Robbie was like, I think he was joking.

[00:26:46] He's like, we could FaceTime where I was like, actually we can.

[00:26:50] When I got up Saturday morning, I was like, first thing I did, I was

[00:26:54] like, what time is it in California?

[00:26:55] She will end up FaceTiming me with somebody and I'm not

[00:26:59] going to look like a troll.

[00:27:01] My hair was a mess, but you looked beautiful.

[00:27:03] Thank you.

[00:27:04] But it was fun.

[00:27:05] It was a good time.

[00:27:05] We got to see, you know, we got to see Robbie again.

[00:27:08] We got to see Adam.

[00:27:10] Adam signed my book.

[00:27:11] Thank you for letting me fucking curse.

[00:27:15] Which was awesome.

[00:27:16] I was like, what is he so funny?

[00:27:19] We got, I saw Victoria.

[00:27:21] I didn't get to say hi to her, but I saw her.

[00:27:23] She looked beautiful as always.

[00:27:25] Gorgeous.

[00:27:25] Like, yeah, she, she, she is.

[00:27:28] I saw Tracy.

[00:27:29] I met Tracy in person.

[00:27:31] Casey Feisel.

[00:27:32] I did.

[00:27:33] Got her last name.

[00:27:34] Oh my gosh.

[00:27:35] I was, we, so I went, my daughter needed to go to the, this was at fierce Friday.

[00:27:40] My daughter needed to go to the bathroom.

[00:27:42] So I walked over to the bathroom and I'm standing outside and he's

[00:27:45] standing outside waiting for her.

[00:27:47] And I was just like, I'm so sorry.

[00:27:49] This is super awkward.

[00:27:50] I just wanted to let you know that I love how much you

[00:27:52] love your wife and that's all.

[00:27:53] Okay.

[00:27:56] And he was like, oh my gosh, thank you.

[00:27:57] I was like, it was so nice.

[00:27:59] Um, yeah, no, it was, it was fun.

[00:28:01] It was not the same.

[00:28:03] I don't have the same level of enthusiasm about it as I did for last year's event.

[00:28:08] It's not how do you decline like that?

[00:28:10] Yeah.

[00:28:11] You would think they would only get better.

[00:28:13] Yeah.

[00:28:13] Smackdown was so good.

[00:28:17] Smackdown was fun.

[00:28:18] We had some surprise appearances by Jared and Sophia, which was so much fun.

[00:28:25] They are so cute.

[00:28:26] I adored them.

[00:28:27] So yeah, it was Smackdown as always is a blast, but yeah, I mean, I'll

[00:28:32] go again next year because it wasn't as bad as like how bad Y'allFest was.

[00:28:37] And I'll probably give Y'allFest another try if for nothing else than to be with

[00:28:42] you guys, like to see Angie and hopefully depending on what hopefully you're

[00:28:48] putting on.

[00:28:49] Yeah.

[00:28:50] So we'll see.

[00:28:51] Tahira Mafi.

[00:28:52] You gotta come to Y'allFest.

[00:28:53] Help them redeem it for me because I'll be one of those in line at 6

[00:28:56] 30 in the morning.

[00:28:57] You absolutely would.

[00:28:59] I have to show you.

[00:29:02] Aaron and I match.

[00:29:03] So yeah, that was, that was basically my week.

[00:29:08] That was a lot of talk about Y'allFest.

[00:29:10] You have a fictional boyfriend of the week?

[00:29:17] I do not, but I'm going to bring back my fictional granny.

[00:29:21] I did not read Vera Wong this week, but Vera is my fictional granny again

[00:29:25] this week because Vera Wong won the Edgar award for best paperback.

[00:29:31] Oh, so we're celebrating on there.

[00:29:35] Yeah.

[00:29:35] I saw Jessie posted to Instagram and saying like how the Pulitzer is like

[00:29:41] the height of the literary awards and the Hugo is the height of, I think

[00:29:44] it's sci-fi fantasy and the Edgar is for like mysteries and she won an

[00:29:49] Edgar award for Vera Wong.

[00:29:51] And I was like, this is very exciting.

[00:29:53] I get to talk about my fictional granny again this week.

[00:29:58] So yeah, my fictional granny, no boys this week, just a granny.

[00:30:03] Very nice.

[00:30:04] How about you?

[00:30:05] I'm going to go with Boreas the Northwind.

[00:30:07] I think they describe him with blue eyes, but the rest of them is Ben Barnes

[00:30:12] with long hair sold.

[00:30:15] That's fair.

[00:30:15] Except for the whole like frost thing.

[00:30:19] I feel like I love Boreas.

[00:30:21] Okay.

[00:30:22] Spoiler alert.

[00:30:23] It's, it's a beauty and the beast retelling.

[00:30:26] If there is anything on this earth that is my fandom, right?

[00:30:30] It's beauty and the beast.

[00:30:31] And it's been that way since what 1993, 1994, whatever year it came out.

[00:30:36] That's been my life, but I feel like whenever the summer wind comes,

[00:30:43] that's going to be my jam because you're on the first day of summer.

[00:30:48] I am a summer person through and through.

[00:30:50] I don't know about the frosty wind of the North bringing the cold

[00:30:54] and ice like, I don't know that that's for me.

[00:30:58] Not so much.

[00:30:59] Well, for this week, at least it is.

[00:31:02] Yeah.

[00:31:03] Boreas is, I like him a lot.

[00:31:07] Very patient as the beast, as Prince Adam is in the cartoon.

[00:31:12] So sounds good.

[00:31:19] That sound means we have an intruder alert.

[00:31:22] It's an intruder.

[00:31:24] Guys, we're so excited.

[00:31:26] We have the author of Heaven Breaker, Sarah Wolf with us today.

[00:31:31] Welcome to the podcast, Sarah.

[00:31:33] Hi, everybody.

[00:31:35] My name is Sarah Wolf.

[00:31:36] I'm the New York Times bestselling author of the lovely Vicious series.

[00:31:39] But I also wrote Bring Me Their Hearts and now Heaven Breaker is my newest series.

[00:31:42] It's nice to meet everybody.

[00:31:43] Hello.

[00:31:44] Oh, my God.

[00:31:45] That was a brilliant intro.

[00:31:47] So good.

[00:31:48] Thank you.

[00:31:49] I've been practicing.

[00:31:50] I've had 10 years of practice, so I better be good at it.

[00:31:53] True.

[00:31:54] I feel like I still like we've been doing this for like three years

[00:31:59] and I still stumble over things.

[00:32:00] So like, that's so real.

[00:32:03] You guys are professionals, though.

[00:32:05] We try.

[00:32:06] We try.

[00:32:07] But we say like we fake it.

[00:32:09] But then if things go off the rails or we say something, just whatever.

[00:32:13] It's like we're on brand.

[00:32:14] That's why we're named.

[00:32:16] Brand a bit of chaos.

[00:32:18] I see.

[00:32:18] Yeah, exactly.

[00:32:20] OK.

[00:32:21] All right.

[00:32:22] So what we normally do is the first thing we ask is if you could give us

[00:32:25] kind of like a quick elevator pitch of the book, if somebody just hasn't

[00:32:29] heard of it before.

[00:32:30] Sure.

[00:32:30] Yeah.

[00:32:30] Heaven breaker is a revenge story about a girl whose mother has been murdered

[00:32:34] in her quest to get revenge.

[00:32:36] She has to ride a giant robot and joust against nobles in a tournament

[00:32:40] in order to secure her retribution.

[00:32:42] Very nice.

[00:32:43] Yeah, I very so I have a habit of picking up books because they look

[00:32:49] pretty and not reading the back cover.

[00:32:52] I mean, and so I definitely did not go into it.

[00:32:56] Realize thinking like it's like sci fi and I open it

[00:32:59] and I'm reading, I'm like, this is so exciting.

[00:33:02] I haven't read sci fi in so long and I actually really love space

[00:33:06] adventures, but I kind of like haven't done it recently.

[00:33:10] So thanks for that.

[00:33:13] It does.

[00:33:13] I've heard a lot of people say that it definitely does look

[00:33:15] like a fantasy cover, and I agree.

[00:33:17] I wanted to mech on it, but mechs apparently mechs are very, very hard

[00:33:20] to find good artists for.

[00:33:21] They're very they're different from like, you know, the usual cover images.

[00:33:25] So yeah, maybe someday.

[00:33:26] It's you know, it's still really exciting.

[00:33:29] It's a beautiful cover and the story I'm obsessed.

[00:33:32] I'm about a third of the way through and I'm just like,

[00:33:35] oh, I have to stop and do everything.

[00:33:39] I was reading it in the carpool line.

[00:33:41] I know I was waiting to pick up my daughter.

[00:33:44] I was like, I got to read as fast as I can.

[00:33:47] That's so funny.

[00:33:48] Yeah, I hope it I hope it made the time pass.

[00:33:50] Yeah, it's having a blast.

[00:33:52] I'm absolutely having a blast.

[00:33:54] It's good to hear.

[00:33:55] So where did this story come from?

[00:33:57] Oh, my goodness.

[00:33:58] Yeah, there's a lot of places, right?

[00:33:59] Because it incorporates a lot of elements.

[00:34:01] There's giant robots.

[00:34:02] They're in space and they're jousting.

[00:34:04] That alone is like three different like movies, shows, books.

[00:34:08] Right.

[00:34:08] Like it's like a blender in there, a smoothie, one might say.

[00:34:11] Mostly I really enjoy giant robots.

[00:34:13] I grew up with them a lot.

[00:34:14] Like in some ways, some people will grow up with books and I grew up

[00:34:17] with like anime and I grew up with like games and stuff like that.

[00:34:20] So for me, giant robots were introduced very, very early on as a concept.

[00:34:24] And then Pacific Rim came along and I could finally talk about

[00:34:27] giant robots with all my friends.

[00:34:29] Yay.

[00:34:30] So yeah, Pacific Rim has stayed sort of as a as a like a benchmark

[00:34:35] for me in terms of giant robots, Evangelion,

[00:34:38] even though I don't really like the characters that much.

[00:34:41] I really do like the giant robots to the coolest part.

[00:34:43] And that's an anime.

[00:34:44] But yeah, so like I think it came about because of two things.

[00:34:49] Do you guys remember like the fake missile, the fake nuclear missile

[00:34:53] alert that went out to Hawaii?

[00:34:54] Oh, yeah.

[00:34:56] Yeah.

[00:34:56] Yeah.

[00:34:57] Oh my God.

[00:34:58] I like erased it.

[00:34:59] Yeah.

[00:35:00] Yeah, I know they're going to try and make you forget that one.

[00:35:02] But basically like that happened.

[00:35:04] My family lives in Hawaii.

[00:35:05] Grew up in Hawaii.

[00:35:06] My family lives in Hawaii.

[00:35:07] So for like a solid 45 minutes, it was maybe the worst anxiety

[00:35:12] I've ever felt in my life.

[00:35:13] I bet all I could do is sit here and watch all my friends and family

[00:35:16] text me about how they were like going down to the beach and just sort

[00:35:20] of drinking and waiting for the end.

[00:35:22] So that was really fun.

[00:35:23] But then it was like, oh, ha ha.

[00:35:25] It's just a joke.

[00:35:26] It's just a fun little slip.

[00:35:27] We slipped up on that alert.

[00:35:29] That was a joke and the government announced that on Twitter.

[00:35:31] They're like, ha ha.

[00:35:32] Whoops.

[00:35:33] And I was like, okay.

[00:35:34] So I was so mad because you don't accidentally do something like that.

[00:35:37] I'm not really serious, but that is not an accident that happens.

[00:35:41] Right.

[00:35:42] So my fear, I had a lot of fury towards, let's say a lot of

[00:35:45] government at that point.

[00:35:47] And then I, then I watched ended up watching Queen's Gambit, which is

[00:35:50] a really cool show on Netflix.

[00:35:51] And I'm not the sort of person that is competitive.

[00:35:54] I don't understand the competitive drive.

[00:35:55] I don't understand sports.

[00:35:56] I don't get it.

[00:35:57] Right.

[00:35:57] But watching Queen's Gambit being me realize, ah, people don't just

[00:36:00] do this to say I'm the best.

[00:36:01] They do this to test themselves and their own ego and the limits of

[00:36:04] their own abilities against each other.

[00:36:06] Right.

[00:36:06] So I sort of kind of made, I wanted right then and there, I was

[00:36:10] like, ah, a competition and like all of the pent up anger I had, not

[00:36:13] just towards that incident, but many other incidents because this was

[00:36:16] the quarantine and the panini.

[00:36:17] Right.

[00:36:17] Many other instances, I had a lot of pent up rage and I watched

[00:36:20] Queen's Gambit and I was like, well, we can make it a competition.

[00:36:23] And it sort of started rolling from there.

[00:36:25] I knew I wanted to make giant robots.

[00:36:27] I had never done sci-fi before.

[00:36:29] Um, but the only place giant robots really fit is sci-fi.

[00:36:32] Right.

[00:36:32] Um, I think even like iron widow is a really good example of this.

[00:36:35] It is fantasy.

[00:36:36] Yes.

[00:36:36] But it is also, it's, I would say that iron widow is more like a sci

[00:36:39] fantasy, right?

[00:36:40] It's not just a fantasy.

[00:36:41] It's not just a sci-fi.

[00:36:42] It's like a blend of both.

[00:36:43] So I actually, it was funny.

[00:36:45] I wrote like the first draft of heaven breaker.

[00:36:47] And then I read iron widow and I was like, yo, we should

[00:36:50] collab.

[00:36:51] Yo, let's go.

[00:36:54] And you have her right here.

[00:36:58] It has been so kind as to give me a blurb and they have been so great

[00:37:01] to get to know, um, as a person.

[00:37:03] So I've been having a blast learning, learning and just making friends.

[00:37:07] But yeah, so sci-fi, I never tried it before, but I knew that if I

[00:37:11] wanted to try it my way, it would have to be couched in sort of the

[00:37:15] giant robot genre, right?

[00:37:17] Because that is what I know.

[00:37:18] I also really liked them just as an extent of the human ego, right?

[00:37:22] Like the giant robot is not just a giant robot.

[00:37:25] It represents the pilot inside.

[00:37:26] There's something about it that represents the pilot, right?

[00:37:29] And so I really like, I really like projecting the human ego outward onto

[00:37:32] the robot and sort of give it a symbolism and all that sort of stuff.

[00:37:35] So that's how the book came about.

[00:37:36] Yippee.

[00:37:38] I love that.

[00:37:39] I love that.

[00:37:40] I can already see the cosplays.

[00:37:42] Oh, I'm so excited.

[00:37:44] I can already picture them.

[00:37:46] I love all the different elements to it too.

[00:37:49] Like there's so many different pieces that you don't think would work together

[00:37:53] and then they're there and you're like, oh, this is, this is fun.

[00:37:58] Yeah.

[00:37:58] I never would have thought of that.

[00:37:59] This is a blast.

[00:38:02] So in the book, you have kind of a unique way of telling the story where

[00:38:07] you have some chapters are in, is it Sinali?

[00:38:11] Is that what you say?

[00:38:11] Yes.

[00:38:13] In like her first person point of view and then you have other chapters

[00:38:16] that kind of follow other characters.

[00:38:19] How did you develop like that, that style of the, of writing the story?

[00:38:24] Yeah.

[00:38:25] So usually my books are in first person.

[00:38:27] Jordi I would say is in first person, but I, I realized that this

[00:38:30] world was a bit bigger and if we were only confined to Sinali's viewpoint,

[00:38:34] it would be, it would be a shame.

[00:38:35] It would be a waste.

[00:38:36] What I was going for originally was a hunger game style where it's almost

[00:38:39] entirely in Katniss' point of view type deal with the hunger games.

[00:38:42] I was trying to go for that at the beginning, but I just realized that all

[00:38:46] the political machinations that were coming to a head had to sort of

[00:38:49] converge at the end and that meant that we had to see them at it

[00:38:52] throughout the book.

[00:38:53] So yeah, I, I, I wanted something that wasn't quite as limiting as first

[00:38:58] person, even though I love first person, there's only a limit

[00:39:00] you can do with it.

[00:39:00] Right?

[00:39:01] So yeah, I did some, some stuff that felt important to show.

[00:39:04] I'm usually bad at figuring that out actually.

[00:39:06] I'm usually bad at being like, ah, I need to show this.

[00:39:08] So the reader's not confused, but I think in this book, it just sort

[00:39:10] of really came naturally, right?

[00:39:12] Like it was just like, oh, I need to show them this.

[00:39:14] I need to show them this.

[00:39:15] Like, yeah.

[00:39:16] Yeah.

[00:39:16] Yeah.

[00:39:17] And it was it.

[00:39:17] Oh, sorry.

[00:39:18] I was going to say, is it difficult to go from Sinali's perspective and

[00:39:21] personality to the chapters that aren't her and keep her voice distinct?

[00:39:26] Or is that something that just kind of comes naturally?

[00:39:28] I think she's such a strong character in terms of what she wants.

[00:39:31] Right.

[00:39:31] I mean, she only wants revenge and that's the only thing she wants.

[00:39:34] So it's actually very easy to slip back into her.

[00:39:36] She's just, she's pissed.

[00:39:38] She's missed as hell.

[00:39:39] Right?

[00:39:39] Like she's mad and she's pissed and like, uh, she's actually extremely

[00:39:43] easy because she's, she's sort of dry because of all her trauma.

[00:39:46] She's just like tamp down, like what would be considered wet emotion.

[00:39:50] Right.

[00:39:50] Like, so there's not a lot of like, there's not a lot of emotion

[00:39:53] to her, but there is a lot of like dry.

[00:39:54] I mean, people say there isn't that it's true and it's true, but

[00:39:57] it's like, it's like desiccated emotion, right?

[00:39:59] It's like emotion jerky.

[00:40:00] She's basically emotional jerky right now versus like at a full steak.

[00:40:04] You know, like, and then you go to someone like racks and racks is like,

[00:40:08] racks is like a full like steak.

[00:40:10] You know, he's got like the juices everywhere and yeah, all of the

[00:40:13] characters, I guess, let me stop doing this metaphor real quick.

[00:40:16] Uh, all of, all of the characters are so well defined in what they want

[00:40:19] specifically, but it is pretty easy to jump back and forth between them

[00:40:23] because they all, they all have, like, they have flavors to them.

[00:40:26] They have feels to them.

[00:40:27] And they're just like, the snapshots are so well defined in my head

[00:40:30] that it's pretty easy.

[00:40:31] Very cool.

[00:40:32] Yeah.

[00:40:33] Yeah.

[00:40:34] Karen pointed out like the art.

[00:40:36] I haven't really noticed, but the art on each chapter is different compared

[00:40:42] to like talking or there's little hints.

[00:40:46] Was that an act of choice?

[00:40:48] Did you?

[00:40:48] Yeah.

[00:40:49] So every picture represents a character.

[00:40:51] So the lances represent racks and the spider represents rain and

[00:40:55] the lion represents morale and the girl with the helmet on

[00:40:59] represents Sonali and then Dravix.

[00:41:01] I forget what he did for Dravix, but yeah.

[00:41:03] He only has one scene anyway, so it's okay.

[00:41:06] I was going to say, I was trying to find him, but he only has the one.

[00:41:09] He only has the one.

[00:41:11] That's really cool.

[00:41:12] I don't know that I've ever seen that before.

[00:41:14] Yeah.

[00:41:14] When I first, when I first started reading it, I like was flipping

[00:41:18] the page, I'm like, wait, and you even have like the, the

[00:41:23] numbering on the chapters, it changes a little bit.

[00:41:26] And I was like, wait a second.

[00:41:27] This is clever.

[00:41:30] What was the thought process behind that?

[00:41:32] Like, why did you decide to not only having these little like art images,

[00:41:37] but like the chap, the changing of the numbering of the chapters.

[00:41:40] I thought that was really interesting.

[00:41:42] Thank you.

[00:41:43] Yeah.

[00:41:43] The, the, the images are entirely thanks to the people who put the book

[00:41:47] together, the graphics team at Red Tower.

[00:41:49] So 100% of the credit goes to them for that for the, the chapter title,

[00:41:53] like the chapter numbers, I think it was, I think it was like, we spent a

[00:41:57] weekend trying to put this book together as fast as possible because of

[00:42:01] various circumstances, but we were going back and forth just emailing like

[00:42:04] every minute pretty much and Liz's wonderful assistant.

[00:42:08] She, she told me, I don't know if she wants to be named, so I'm just

[00:42:10] gonna say Liz's wonderful assistant was like, you know, like we're,

[00:42:13] we're talking about chapter after the Latin needed to be corrected basically.

[00:42:18] And so I was going through all of the chapters and I was like, what is

[00:42:21] like the point of Rain's journey is that he, I mean, no spoilers if

[00:42:25] you don't want to hear spoilers, but the point of Rain's journey is

[00:42:28] that he finds a new family to protect.

[00:42:30] Right.

[00:42:30] So I wanted him to be, he's already has so much behind him.

[00:42:35] His, his journey is counting down to when he meets his new family.

[00:42:38] And so his chapters start out really high, but then they count down

[00:42:42] to zero eventually where he starts his real journey.

[00:42:45] Yeah.

[00:42:46] So crazy.

[00:42:47] Like I love that.

[00:42:49] So thoughtful.

[00:42:51] Yeah.

[00:42:51] My gosh.

[00:42:54] What a fun little like Easter egg kind of thing.

[00:42:58] Oh, I love it.

[00:43:00] I'm glad you like it.

[00:43:01] I was hoping people would get it and they wouldn't be like, is this a typo?

[00:43:04] I looked at it.

[00:43:05] I'm like, this is, this is intentional, but I not, I wasn't far enough

[00:43:09] into like really like understand the nuance of it.

[00:43:13] And now that you've explained it, I'm like, Oh my God, it's so good.

[00:43:17] Yeah.

[00:43:18] Thank you.

[00:43:18] Thank you.

[00:43:19] I love it.

[00:43:21] So heaven breaker is intended to be a series, right?

[00:43:24] Yes.

[00:43:25] How many books do you think or have you, have you planned out for?

[00:43:28] So I'm not a plotter because every time I end up plotting a book fully, I, yeah,

[00:43:33] no, I like it's like you plot a book and it's like, I'm done with the book.

[00:43:36] Oops.

[00:43:36] I wrote it.

[00:43:37] Didn't I write it?

[00:43:38] I wrote down all the plot points.

[00:43:39] There's nothing else to do.

[00:43:40] Like there's a book there.

[00:43:41] There's like, so in my brain, if I plot something out, I just

[00:43:44] shelve it as finished.

[00:43:45] But for me, like the, in order to keep myself entertained by my own

[00:43:49] book, I basically have to be like, all right, I don't know what's happening.

[00:43:53] Here's the start.

[00:43:53] Here's the end go.

[00:43:54] Right.

[00:43:55] And so what keeps me entertained is like, uh, and what keeps me writing is like

[00:43:58] finding out every new thing that sort of comes along the way.

[00:44:00] And that's why I'm a pantser, uh, because the chaos feels my brain.

[00:44:04] Yeah.

[00:44:04] So that's all entire mood.

[00:44:08] Yeah.

[00:44:09] Chaos.

[00:44:10] Yeah.

[00:44:10] That's my new favorite thing.

[00:44:12] Chaos fueled my brain.

[00:44:13] I love that.

[00:44:14] I forgot the original question.

[00:44:15] I'm so sorry.

[00:44:16] Well, it was just like, this is gonna be a series.

[00:44:19] Yes.

[00:44:20] It's going to be a duology for now.

[00:44:22] A duology.

[00:44:22] Okay.

[00:44:23] Uh, heaven breaker and hell runner.

[00:44:24] I think it's going to be the second book.

[00:44:26] Um, yeah.

[00:44:29] And hopefully it's going to be like a red book to offset the blue, maybe

[00:44:31] with like a rabbit or something.

[00:44:33] Yeah.

[00:44:33] So hell runner is going to be the second book.

[00:44:35] We'll see if it does well enough, then we can get a third book.

[00:44:38] But to be honest, I don't know if either of you read the

[00:44:40] book to full like the entire book.

[00:44:44] That's okay.

[00:44:44] Still.

[00:44:45] Uh, I don't know if you heard about the reference to the seven other

[00:44:48] arcs of humanity that are somewhere out there.

[00:44:50] Um, basically there are seven in total.

[00:44:52] Yeah.

[00:44:53] And so I would like to explore the other six.

[00:44:55] So like, I want one, I had this image of one that falls down to a water planet.

[00:45:00] And so all of the giant robot fights happen under water, but it's like a pirate

[00:45:03] theme so that, that it's like old school pirates instead of medieval

[00:45:07] knights first meets some robots.

[00:45:09] I wanted it to be pirates meets, uh, giant robots fighting into water.

[00:45:12] Um, they're like salvaging, fighting over salvage or something like that.

[00:45:15] Yeah.

[00:45:16] So I might so cool.

[00:45:18] Yeah.

[00:45:18] So I love it.

[00:45:20] I'm glad.

[00:45:21] I think how runner is definitely going to end Sonali story, but I don't

[00:45:24] think the world itself is going to end.

[00:45:25] I think there's definitely possibilities.

[00:45:27] So yeah.

[00:45:27] Oh, that's so exciting.

[00:45:29] Yeah.

[00:45:29] Because when I did, so I, when I w when I was reading it, I didn't quite

[00:45:33] know like, I wasn't a hundred percent sure if there was more to this,

[00:45:37] like there was going to be a second one.

[00:45:39] But then when I got to like, they were talking about the seven stations.

[00:45:41] I was like, well surely, surely there's going to be at least seven.

[00:45:47] So that's so exciting.

[00:45:50] Okay.

[00:45:50] We're putting it out there.

[00:45:51] We're manifesting it.

[00:45:52] I was going to say we're manifestors on this.

[00:45:54] Yeah, we're going to manifest that we get to visit all of the

[00:45:58] other stations at some point.

[00:46:02] Yeah.

[00:46:03] This is a book that I really want to see out of all of my books.

[00:46:06] I think this is the one that fits like film the most or not.

[00:46:08] Not TV.

[00:46:09] Oh, I could see it.

[00:46:10] Yeah, I could see it.

[00:46:11] Yeah.

[00:46:12] It would, I can see it being very cinematic, at least like, I, like

[00:46:16] I said, I'm only about a third of the way through, but it already feels kind

[00:46:20] of like there's that energy.

[00:46:22] Like you could bring it to life.

[00:46:24] And I just, I also really like giant robots.

[00:46:27] Like let's, let's do more giant robots.

[00:46:29] Let's do more.

[00:46:30] Let's in space, giant robots in space.

[00:46:33] Like what is, what is not to love about that?

[00:46:35] Honestly guys.

[00:46:38] I'm hoping with the popularity of doing it'll be possible.

[00:46:41] Oh yeah.

[00:46:43] True.

[00:46:43] In your cross.

[00:46:44] In your cross.

[00:46:44] Very true.

[00:46:45] Okay.

[00:46:45] So we have a couple of questions that we like ask everybody.

[00:46:50] Yeah.

[00:46:50] They're kind of like required for being on the podcast.

[00:46:54] The first one is this is, and this is the moment where like everything you've

[00:46:58] ever consumed is going to leave your brain.

[00:47:00] I'm so excited.

[00:47:00] Like what is the book?

[00:47:02] I've been waiting for this moment.

[00:47:02] I've never heard of a TV show.

[00:47:04] So we have a segment that we call fictional boyfriend of the week in

[00:47:08] which we pick like a fictional character that we love.

[00:47:10] It doesn't have to be a boyfriend.

[00:47:12] This week I have a fictional granny.

[00:47:14] Um, so basically any fictional character from whatever that just speaks to you.

[00:47:19] Who is somebody that you're like either for this week or like of all time

[00:47:23] that you're like them mine.

[00:47:25] Yes.

[00:47:27] Well, if I'm going to be truthful, there's a, I have a secret I'm reading.

[00:47:32] I don't know if I should say this.

[00:47:33] I let's say I'm a beta reader for a friend and their book is going to be

[00:47:38] very big and let's just say that there is a guy who's a my baby girl in there.

[00:47:44] I don't know if I can say, okay, listen, I can't say it, but it's going to come out.

[00:47:47] And it's also about giant robots.

[00:47:49] Okay.

[00:47:50] Let's just say that it's a sequel to a giant robot book and I'm reading it

[00:47:54] and there's a baby girl man in it that I love him.

[00:47:57] Yeah.

[00:47:58] Yeah.

[00:47:58] Yeah.

[00:47:58] You're putting them together.

[00:47:59] It's exactly what you it's, it's, it's what I think it is.

[00:48:03] It's yeah.

[00:48:04] Okay.

[00:48:05] I can't spoil though.

[00:48:06] So yes, he's kind of the same.

[00:48:09] I got it.

[00:48:09] I got it.

[00:48:10] Okay.

[00:48:11] We're on the same wavelength.

[00:48:12] I'm completely lost.

[00:48:13] So it's okay.

[00:48:14] She'll tell you, she'll tell you.

[00:48:16] I'll tell you later.

[00:48:16] You'll tell me.

[00:48:17] He's like my evil baby girl.

[00:48:19] I love him.

[00:48:20] Yes.

[00:48:21] Yeah.

[00:48:21] Yes.

[00:48:22] Yes.

[00:48:23] I am here for this.

[00:48:26] And then in general, I think if I have a baby girl of all time, I think

[00:48:29] it's probably going to be Demetri fire emblem.

[00:48:31] Demetri three houses fire emblem.

[00:48:32] He's a video game character, but I love him.

[00:48:35] He's my wife.

[00:48:35] We sand.

[00:48:36] You know what?

[00:48:37] Video game characters are also fictional characters that we love.

[00:48:40] Yeah.

[00:48:40] He's a friend.

[00:48:41] If it helps, he's a King and he's super magically, super strong.

[00:48:45] He breaks all the utensils that he holds when he's trying to eat.

[00:48:49] Okay.

[00:48:49] I love you.

[00:48:50] Yeah.

[00:48:51] I love that.

[00:48:52] Yeah.

[00:48:53] What game?

[00:48:54] Fire emblem three houses.

[00:48:56] It's a tactical strategy game, but yeah.

[00:48:58] Okay.

[00:49:00] I love that.

[00:49:01] I get it.

[00:49:02] All right.

[00:49:02] The other question that we always ask our guests is what are you reading?

[00:49:07] Like what books do you recommend outside of your own that, you know,

[00:49:12] it could be like your favorite book, something you've read recently that

[00:49:14] you're like, everyone has to read this.

[00:49:16] Yeah.

[00:49:17] I think every time someone asks me what books to read, especially if

[00:49:19] they're fantasy, I always, I always, always, always point them towards

[00:49:22] the Terry Pratchett Tiffany Aking series.

[00:49:24] It's part of his disc world.

[00:49:26] I don't know what to call it anthology.

[00:49:27] It's part of his disc world universe, but basically it's about a pre pubescent

[00:49:32] witch who comes into her full powers over the course of like three or four books.

[00:49:37] And Terry Pratchett has this amazing style, especially in these books where

[00:49:40] he it's like, he's sitting down his granddaughter on his knee and telling

[00:49:44] her this story of this witch and like, it's full of like life lessons

[00:49:48] and like his advice is not preaching in any way, it's just like, here

[00:49:51] are the things you're going to encounter.

[00:49:52] You're going to start liking boys, right?

[00:49:54] You're going to get into some trouble with some rough boys.

[00:49:57] Like, and in this case, the rough boy is like the king of winter, right?

[00:50:00] Like an evil fairy.

[00:50:01] So like there's a lot of really cool metaphors in it.

[00:50:04] Um, it's really well written.

[00:50:05] It's very charming and it just feels like the coming of age story for,

[00:50:09] from a grandpa or grandma that I like never had.

[00:50:12] So, um, I always recommend it's Tiffany, the Tiffany Aking

[00:50:15] series by Terry Pratchett.

[00:50:17] I love that.

[00:50:19] Yeah.

[00:50:19] It's my comfort read fantasy for sure.

[00:50:22] Is that what around what age range is that?

[00:50:25] I would say the first book probably starts at like 12.

[00:50:27] Um, and then it goes up and it stops at probably like 16.

[00:50:31] Okay.

[00:50:31] It's no, no, nothing graphic.

[00:50:33] It's just like scary situations that are

[00:50:37] I have a nine year old and I'm like, yeah.

[00:50:39] So I'm like, she loves, she loves reading.

[00:50:42] She was really into reading, which thank God.

[00:50:45] Um, so I'm like always kind of fine little nuggets like that.

[00:50:49] Like that sounds like Tiffany Akin would be perfect

[00:50:51] that y'all can enjoy it together.

[00:50:53] Yeah.

[00:50:54] Oh, I love it.

[00:50:55] The first book deals with her like trying to rescue.

[00:50:57] I think it's her baby brother in a very labyrinth move, but it's her baby

[00:51:00] brother from like the gnomes under the hill and she has a frying pan.

[00:51:05] And that's her only weapon.

[00:51:06] But as she grows up, she becomes a real witch.

[00:51:08] Uh, and the cool thing about that series is like Terry Pratchett

[00:51:11] does this wonderful job of differentiating between witches and wizards.

[00:51:14] So wizards are people that study esoterically and like just sort of

[00:51:18] like make up concepts that don't really help the common people, but the

[00:51:21] witch is the person who will give you the cure for the common cold.

[00:51:24] Right?

[00:51:24] She's your, she's like, she'll make you a soup, you know, she'll like,

[00:51:28] she'll teach you how to stop the river from flooding, like very practical

[00:51:32] grounded magic versus like this esoteric wizard nonsense.

[00:51:36] Um, which and I love the differentiation.

[00:51:39] It's very neat.

[00:51:41] Definitely check it out.

[00:51:42] Yeah, absolutely.

[00:51:43] I will.

[00:51:43] For sure.

[00:51:44] Yeah.

[00:51:44] Okay.

[00:51:45] So I know heaven breaker is not quite out yet, but can you talk

[00:51:49] about anything from the sequel that you can talk about or anything

[00:51:53] that you're working on right now that we sure.

[00:51:57] Yeah, there's a lot of more banging in the sequel.

[00:51:59] There's a lot of more boinging if you're all interested in that

[00:52:03] some rumpus time, shall we say?

[00:52:05] God I'm sold.

[00:52:09] I, the first book is it was hard.

[00:52:11] I tried, I tried my best to put some boingas in there.

[00:52:13] Um, but I couldn't because just the way Sunali is she's

[00:52:17] just like so revenge driven.

[00:52:18] There's no way that she's going to be down for boinging anytime soon,

[00:52:21] especially with her particular trauma wrapped up around it.

[00:52:24] Um, so I did my best and like, I, what I like about Rax and Sunali's

[00:52:28] relationship is that he started there to feed her fire and vice versa.

[00:52:32] Rather than just being people that immediate, like I want to rip your

[00:52:35] clothes off, it's more like you'll see, I think as you get farther in the

[00:52:38] book, but basically Rax is kind of the more mature one, even though

[00:52:41] Sunali seems more mature, Rax is more mature because he understands

[00:52:44] that like pursuing a romantic relationship right now with somebody

[00:52:47] who was that like wounded is not the way, right?

[00:52:50] Oh, like it would not be more taking advantage.

[00:52:53] Yes.

[00:52:53] It wouldn't be fair.

[00:52:54] So he basically draws a really hard line.

[00:52:56] Um, but she is like tormented because she's never really had

[00:52:59] sexual attraction to anybody.

[00:53:01] She's used sex as a weapon essentially just to get through life.

[00:53:04] And so now she has to grapple with the fact that, oh, she might

[00:53:06] actually like someone in that way.

[00:53:08] And it is very confusing to her because she's like, oh, is it just sex

[00:53:11] or is it like, can I even have a relationship when I'm just going to die?

[00:53:14] Right.

[00:53:14] Cause this is full of, again, like you might want to put a trigger

[00:53:17] warning for this episode in general, but she is very full of suicidal ideation.

[00:53:20] So it's, it's rough for her.

[00:53:21] She's going through a rough time and Rax kind of knows that.

[00:53:23] And so he's drawn this line.

[00:53:25] And I think the, in the second book, the line is going to be a bit different

[00:53:28] because he has to teach her a lot of things, not just boinging, but, um,

[00:53:32] it's like, he has to teach her how to ride properly, right?

[00:53:35] Um, like enter and to ride properly.

[00:53:37] Um, but you know, you know, anyway, that's not a funny, that's not funny.

[00:53:42] I don't know why I said that.

[00:53:45] Oh, I love your pity laughter, but stop.

[00:53:47] Um, so yeah, so he, they have a really good relationship.

[00:53:51] I think it's going to get better in the second book.

[00:53:53] And, um, I did my best for the tension in the first book

[00:53:56] and I feel like it, it suits it.

[00:53:57] Um, so yeah, it was going to be boinging.

[00:53:59] Um, I think Morel is going to play a really surprising role.

[00:54:01] Not a lot of people are going to be like, people are going to be

[00:54:04] like, what is happening because her role is so surprising.

[00:54:07] And I think people, there will be some deaths, unfortunately, but that's

[00:54:10] just how the cookie crumbles in books.

[00:54:12] You know how it is.

[00:54:13] Yeah.

[00:54:14] We survived our share of them.

[00:54:16] So I have to share.

[00:54:17] I won't make it too bad.

[00:54:18] I promise.

[00:54:19] But not too traumatic.

[00:54:21] You heard it here, folks.

[00:54:22] Just a little bit.

[00:54:23] Just a little light death.

[00:54:25] No big deal.

[00:54:26] Yeah.

[00:54:26] Light permanent trauma.

[00:54:28] Easy.

[00:54:30] Oh my gosh.

[00:54:32] Well, we do have some bad news.

[00:54:35] Yeah.

[00:54:36] To let you know, um, now that you have been on the podcast, you are

[00:54:39] actually legally obligated to come back for all future book releases.

[00:54:43] Oh my gosh.

[00:54:44] Okay.

[00:54:44] I would love that actually.

[00:54:46] That's so weird that this is an unfortunate circumstance.

[00:54:48] You're informing me of, cause I would love to do that.

[00:54:52] We always say that, uh, we don't make the rules.

[00:54:54] We just enforce them with these hands.

[00:54:55] Yeah.

[00:54:56] With these hands.

[00:54:56] Yup.

[00:54:57] Those two hands.

[00:55:00] All right.

[00:55:00] Well, I'm scared of getting beaten up, so I will be here again.

[00:55:06] I think somebody thinks I'm tough.

[00:55:10] You are.

[00:55:11] You're very tough.

[00:55:12] You're surviving a tornado right now.

[00:55:13] Hey, extremely tough.

[00:55:15] Yeah.

[00:55:18] Okay, friends.

[00:56:09] Yes.

[00:56:09] And the TV.

[00:56:09] Let's, uh, let's.

[00:56:10] Hey, universe.

[00:57:18] Yeah.

[00:57:18] That was so much fun.

[00:57:20] I love her energy.

[00:57:21] Oh my gosh.

[00:57:27] It's so pretty.

[00:57:28] I bet it's going to be like shiny.

[00:57:30] Like the finished copies are going to be shiny with the, the edges are

[00:57:33] probably like foiled kind of, I don't know, but I can't wait to see it.

[00:57:38] It's so much fun.

[00:57:39] I'm having a blast.
