[00:00:00] Did I read this? I said I did. Do I remember it? Rains to be seen.
[00:00:08] Welcome to The Incoherent Fangirl. This episode is our mid season finale. We're taking a break guys.
[00:00:17] I'm Mandy of Penelope Featherington's carriage.
[00:00:20] I mean blame me. Blame me. I don't say less. I dare you. And I am Karen of the Holly Library.
[00:00:34] Welcome to our mid season finale. We have lots of joy for you to come. I promise. Yes. Yes. And
[00:00:42] then you're going to be very happy for us that we're taking a break. Yes. Some self care. Yes.
[00:00:48] We're always preaching self care and now we're actually doing it. So we're practicing what we
[00:00:53] preach. Yes, exactly. Okay. For the last time, at least for two months, I have to be mean to
[00:01:04] Mandy in our time. Actually this is nice to me and I'll tell you why after. Okay. Well,
[00:01:09] in our timeline, it is May 23rd and in y'all's timeline, it is May 31st. So I'm going to
[00:01:15] pull in Adam Silvera and remind you that tomorrow is my birthday month and Adam's birthday month and
[00:01:21] everybody's birthday month. So everybody, everybody's birthday. Yeah. Right. Everybody's
[00:01:26] everybody. I feel so not born in June. You weren't born.
[00:01:33] It's my birthday month. It's Adam Silvera's birthday month. It's George Bailey's birthday
[00:01:37] month. Need I say more? Oh my gosh. Love it. All right, Mandy, this weekend fangirling,
[00:01:52] what'd you do? Well, I read another first chance by Robbie Couch, which we'll talk about
[00:01:58] later. And then thanks to my besties at Libro.fm, I've also been listening to Blood
[00:02:04] at the Root by Lydarian Williams. So yeah, in it, we follow Malik who experiences this
[00:02:10] life-changing tragedy 10 years ago when he comes home from a neighborhood party and finds this
[00:02:17] group of mysterious figures surrounding his mother. And like, he's hearing these weird things and
[00:02:23] he like, she vanishes. And at the same time, Malik discovers that he has magical powers that
[00:02:29] he cannot control. And so everyone is like, his mother's dead, you know, she wouldn't have
[00:02:36] left. So since he only had his mother, he's thrust into the foster care system where he grows up.
[00:02:42] He meets his foster brother Tay and they like really bond. They are like, this is my brother
[00:02:48] and he does everything that he can to hide that he's got these powers that he doesn't know
[00:02:52] anything about other than like he had this random outburst and then his mother was gone.
[00:02:56] So at 17, he's on his own and realizes that Tay, he doesn't realize he knows that Tay is
[00:03:02] stuck in this foster home that they met in and that it's not the best environment. It is your
[00:03:08] stereotypical like foster house that you see in movies where they're just in it for the
[00:03:14] paycheck and they're meeting to the kids and yeah. So he uses his powers to steal a car,
[00:03:21] kind of not on purpose even. He's just trying to steal the car and his powers kind of
[00:03:26] help it along. He picks up Tay and just starts driving and he's like, we're leaving.
[00:03:29] He drives for a few hours and then he realizes that Tay is having like a diabetic episode
[00:03:34] and he's like passed out. So he frantically pulls into a gas station and realizes that
[00:03:40] he doesn't have, but like he has like $20. So it's not enough for maybe not even $20.
[00:03:45] It wasn't enough for snacks that they need to spike Tay's blood sugar back up,
[00:03:50] nor is it enough for like gas to get them to the hospital. So he is like, I don't know
[00:03:55] what to do because I can't let, if I let Tay leave me, he'll go back to that house and I
[00:04:01] have to get him out of there. I don't know what to do. So suddenly a man with a Jamaican accent
[00:04:05] just like appears and through this series of bizarre events guides Malik to his long lost
[00:04:12] grandmother who also happens to be Mama Aya, who is a legendary conjurer and magic
[00:04:18] practitioner. So because of his familial ties to Mama Aya, who is, as I said, legendary,
[00:04:24] Malik is nearly instantly accepted to Cayman University, which is a legendary hidden magical
[00:04:32] HBCU where Malik starts to learn about his own magic, his mother's life and her disappearance
[00:04:39] and about an evil that's been kind of lurking and waiting in the wings since the Haitian
[00:04:45] Revolution. I'm really enjoying it so far. I saw someone, I think on Goodreads, compare it to
[00:04:51] like a mix of Stomp the Yard, like Wakanda Forever vibes and Harry Potter if Hogwarts was
[00:04:56] a school, like a college for magical black youths, which I can see especially when you've
[00:05:02] got this like hidden magic school that everyone knows about but no one knows about
[00:05:08] and this looming threat of this like dark menacing evil that everyone thought had been
[00:05:14] vanquished. So everyone's like they're not, they're not bad guys. Like we're just
[00:05:18] learning about them. It definitely so far has explored a lot of like biases that the world
[00:05:25] has and especially America has, especially when it comes to black magic, how people hear
[00:05:31] voodoo and immediately go to dark evil conjuring in a graveyard and voodoo dolls
[00:05:37] to hurt. When voodoo is the ancestral magic from the West Indies of Haiti and even before that
[00:05:44] foundations in West African tribal magic and hoodoo is the same thing you hear hoodoo
[00:05:49] and people tend to clutch their pearls when it's a practice that was created by enslaved
[00:05:55] people in the U.S. that was inspired by voodoo but also sometimes combine that with tenets
[00:06:00] of Christianity and it's not like dark or demented or evil. Growing up in the south
[00:06:06] you don't get as much of the oh it's dark and scary but a lot of the world views it that way
[00:06:12] and someone in the book points out like all nobody like Bats and I, all of the witches and
[00:06:19] Salem you know or the witches who are burned at the stake you know at the time yeah they
[00:06:24] were evil but now it's like oh those poor women but then when you hear voodoo you're
[00:06:27] like yeah so it's i'm learning a lot. I'm almost halfway through and there are so many
[00:06:32] questions that I have about like how it's gonna how the story is gonna go since this is the start
[00:06:37] of a series. I know that not all of my questions are going to be answered or wrapped up at the
[00:06:43] end of this book nor should they be but i'm excited to finish this book and i'm excited to
[00:06:48] see where it goes because it's been it's been an enjoyable ride but because you're the main
[00:06:53] character is like a 17 year old kid and so he's just like a 17 year old kid yeah so he's
[00:06:59] funny but like his reactions to things it's just like oh shit what
[00:07:06] and everybody else around him is like yeah we can teleport you can teleport and he's like what
[00:07:12] I care so yeah he's a lot of he's a really fun main character so i'm having fun. I also
[00:07:18] started the run in the holiday library by K.A. Lindy. I don't I've not gotten far enough
[00:07:22] to really I have the perfect description yeah written down to talk about it so I forgot to
[00:07:30] put this in my notes. I read a I did a beta read for someone in the searcher's paranormal
[00:07:36] mind world it's called The Lost Son by Kimberly Horne and it is about oh my gosh what is his
[00:07:42] name Osiris Osiris lost son basically so it's Egyptian mythology he comes back from the
[00:07:49] underworld slash being in his tomb to try to find his son that has been misled by another god
[00:07:56] to think that that is his son when it's not and and it's about a girl who kind of gets
[00:08:02] roped into the story uh and roped into trying to find this this he's not a boy but this
[00:08:08] person and she's just like what is happening to me and why so that was fun and then I
[00:08:14] watched Bridgerton the first four episodes of season three of Bridgerton and my first like
[00:08:20] bullet point in my notes is I don't even have the words is the friends to lovers story of
[00:08:25] our dreams so without going too many spoilers Colin Bridgerton has spent a few months
[00:08:31] traveling in Europe and getting his Bridgerton glow up do you watch Bridgerton I haven't yet
[00:08:36] okay so the men in Bridgerton when it's their season they get a glow up okay so like
[00:08:42] Anthony got his glow up Colin got his obviously nobody got a glow up in season one because
[00:08:47] right we didn't have anything from before so he's gone to Europe to get all hot um Penelope
[00:08:54] Featherington is in wait hold on that's all it takes I just have to go to Europe
[00:08:59] he went to Europe and he spent months there and he came back like with instead of like
[00:09:04] him improper he's got like his shirts unbuttoned to his chest hair and he's got
[00:09:09] like a jack captain jack sparrow collar and stuff and it's like oh Colin oh my god
[00:09:15] and then Penelope Featherington is entering her third year in society which means it's
[00:09:20] basically a death sentence she's gonna die a spinster if you haven't found a husband in three
[00:09:26] seasons you're not gonna find a husband so Colin is her close friend and he is also
[00:09:31] um brother to her former bestie Eloise I can't tell you why they're formally besties because
[00:09:36] spoilers but he's close to Penelope and so he offers to give her lessons on how to get a
[00:09:41] husband basically because she is us she's like bookish she just wants to be left alone to read
[00:09:47] she doesn't want to deal with any of this nonsense in the society and all of that
[00:09:52] so she doesn't know how to talk to people and she kind of either info dumps or clams up and
[00:09:58] she's like I don't I don't know what to do you can imagine how well catch a husband
[00:10:03] lessons go because the first time anybody even glances in her direction Colin's like wait wait
[00:10:09] wait a minute now so now wait a damn minute wait a damn minute now no no no why is he looking
[00:10:16] at her why is he why why is this going on so right after I watched the first half of the
[00:10:23] season because the next half comes next month I was convinced as it ended it was like two
[00:10:28] o'clock in the morning I was like I'm still an Anthony Gurley and it's like how could I not be
[00:10:33] with as much as I love a monologue and he's the one who gave us you were the bane of my existence
[00:10:39] and the object of all of my desires I think I was wrong I think I might be a Colin Gurley
[00:10:44] for now I've always been a Benedict girl I've been slowly dying for Benedict season he's
[00:10:49] like the artsy fartsy fluid with his sexuality brother so far but I I think I'll
[00:10:56] Benedict's most of all but for now I think I'm a Colin Gurley and I can't tell you anything about
[00:11:01] it or give you any context but in the carriage scene Colin smirks at her about something and
[00:11:08] it sent me swiftly to my death I am still dead on my couch I will never ever ever
[00:11:16] ever recover from this this like look of like wonder on his face and then he just
[00:11:21] smirks and I'm like what what what what is this and it's two classical people
[00:11:34] it was a classical version of give me everything by people and this man just
[00:11:38] smirks at her and then Karen I like I would allow you to skip all the other seasons and
[00:11:44] just watch this scene and you will have everything you need to know about Bridgerton
[00:11:48] and you will be like holy like there are people Darcy and I have gone insane okay we send each
[00:11:55] other like non-stop TikToks and memes and stuff because we're just like this scene is everything
[00:12:01] on this earth it's everything you need to know about Bridgerton it's everything like
[00:12:05] people watch it just back to back to back I'm sure Netflix is going to be sending out that
[00:12:09] like are you okay because you've watched the carriage scene 500 times in the last day to some people but with good reason
[00:12:17] that's been my week and like I needed I'm like hungover or Bridgerton I have a Bridgerton hangover
[00:12:25] that will not be cured until June 16th that seems to be the general consensus all across
[00:12:31] the internet I hate that they do this to us I'm gonna pay for Netflix regardless I'm not
[00:12:36] gonna cancel if you give me all Bridgerton at once yeah stop it stop it what did you do this week
[00:12:42] okay well first while I was editing I looked something up because you said something and I was like hold on I'm gonna look this up and there is in fact an International
[00:12:55] Auntie's Day it is the fourth Sunday in July you're welcome thank you so it's very nice fourth Sunday in July just remind everybody this is my day yeah we need to make it a big day because aunties
[00:13:09] not saying we love the kids as much as their moms do or anything but like but like I would die for my nieces and nephews I would die for them I would die for these children yeah and that's not nothing yeah exactly exactly so come on so just wanted to throw that out there for all the other aunties that are listening you do have a day we're gonna make this a bigger thing because it deserves to be it deserves to be issue yeah it deserves to be it's like it's international
[00:13:39] you know but her ice cream day you know like no we're making this a thing make it a big deal yeah it should be so we're manifesting this now next year everybody's gonna be all about and since there's gonna be a section in CVS for Auntie's Day cards I'm here for it yes thank you all right into my week I read 7% of Rodevere by Ellen O'Clover we've got Rodevere who created an app called mash and yes it is based on that game that we would play
[00:14:09] the mash game she created it as her senior project and it was just supposed to be for her senior project so that she could finish high school and all of that but it accidentally goes viral when her influencer cousin post about it on like her social honestly and because it goes viral a tech investor sees it and offers to work with her to get it off the ground so that they can get like big money investors and try and make
[00:14:39] it you know a big deal make lots of money off of it and Rose biggest dream is to go work in Silicon Valley and hi yeah that's where I live just in case anybody was wondering San Jose is the heart of Silicon Valley so you can imagine how excited I was that we were in this book because we're never talked about so and so Rode jumps at the chance to you know work with these people so that she
[00:15:08] can fulfill her dream instead of going to college she just wants to go straight into working and become big in Silicon Valley but the only problem is that there's a part of the app they have just released that is meant to it's called partner match and it's supposedly supposed to be able to predict your soulmate based on the algorithm to about a 93% accuracy right and 7% of Rodevere and so
[00:15:39] the people that she's working with her like little angel investors are like we need a poster couple for this app so that we can prove to people that it actually works and so they're like you need to do partner match and you need to be dating your match so that you can prove that it can predict
[00:15:59] soulmates and so she's like nervous about it but she's like okay fine and so she does it and it matches her with her supposed soulmate Miller who just happens to be her childhood best friend turned stranger after a huge argument that ended their friendship and now they are being roped into a fake dating scheme in order for the app to look like it's working and also
[00:16:29] Miller gets something out of it as well and so I mean it's a fake dating trope so we know fake dating second chance a little bit of force proximity because you know that kind of just happens when you're fake dating you have to be you're forced to be together and so yeah it's really good I really really liked it the fact that this girl
[00:16:52] Is like 18 and created a whole ass app with like a whole algorithm that was like accurately predicting things for people it was amazing so we stand it was so good I loved it and which leads me into Ellen O'Clover sophomore novel the someday daughter which follows Audrey St.
[00:17:14] Reign whose mother Camilla wrote a book years before Audrey was born about her someday daughter so you know the daughter that she expected to have someday and it's a book about like it's a self-help book that teaches women to kind of love themselves the way that they would love their daughter and it kind of launches her into superstardom she you know bestsellers everything big deal Camilla St.
[00:17:37] Reign is a big deal and everyone thinks that Audrey is so lucky because Camilla is her mother but the reality is very different from that especially when you find out that Audrey was shipped off to boarding school at the age of 11 but now it is the 25th anniversary of the someday daughter and Camilla is going on like a national tour to celebrate this anniversary and she wants Audrey to go with her however Audrey has all these plans for her
[00:18:07] summer that kind of just go up in smoke because Camilla is Camilla and does what she does and ruins all of her very carefully laid plans and Audrey is forced to you know follow her mother along on this tour and put on the big smiley happy face because that's what people expect of her and she's dragged her across the country with her mother that she has a very tenuous relationship with at best but also a group of interns
[00:18:37] that are working on this tour as well including a disarmingly honest and distressingly cute boy named Silas and talk about a monologue this boy Silas
[00:18:53] I like hear about the monologue
[00:18:55] I was listening to it I was just the monologue and I was like okay okay I get it Mandy I get it
[00:19:05] What is better than a man who gives a monologue?
[00:19:09] There's really nothing better so but once again excellent excellent story both of those were five star reads in my opinion I go off of I cannot tell you how I rate my books it's all vibes
[00:19:22] and just Ellen does it for me so and then I also read another first chance by Robbie Couch more on that later I read I hope this doesn't find you by Anne Liang imagine to all the boys if Lara Jean wrote hate emails
[00:19:37] So we've got Sadie Wen who is like the perfect student on paper she's class president not president captain class captain something they go to a weird school special boarding school kind of thing
[00:19:48] You run a boarding school kick
[00:19:50] I guess so
[00:19:52] She's valedictorian she you know is always a pleasure to have in class everything like the perfect student right and she has been in competition with Julius Gong since they both ended
[00:20:06] They both transferred to the school at like the same time and they have been in competition with each other forever okay
[00:20:12] And it's just non-stop and so in her when she gets really angry or frustrated about things Sadie will go into her email and draft up an email to get all of her emotions out right
[00:20:26] But she's never planning to send these she just writes it out to get her emotions out so that she doesn't explode on anybody because she is determined to be like the perfect students for reasons that we find out throughout the book
[00:20:41] And so one day all the emails go out and a majority of those emails are addressed to a certain Julius Gong because of course they are right
[00:20:52] Because she hates him she has been in competition with him forever
[00:20:58] And the president's president principal of the school the principal of the school has this lovely idea that in order for them to resolve their differences they have to work on things together
[00:21:13] So they have to do projects around the school together which of course that always works right
[00:21:20] I mean in the context of like a young adult novel yeah it does but in the real life not so much
[00:21:27] But so it's like force proximity and again again a monologue
[00:21:34] I'm on a boarding school monologue like kick this week apparently I did not intend for this but my god do I love it
[00:21:42] Nothing is better
[00:21:44] And the best part is like it is so clear from the very beginning of the book when they like hate each other
[00:21:51] It's so clear that he is gone for her like he is he's done for he is gone
[00:21:59] And he has been gone for her since the moment they met when they were seven years old like it's so obvious
[00:22:06] And she does not see it she doesn't see it and I'm spending this whole time like girl
[00:22:11] Right there right there right there and he's so good
[00:22:17] Yeah so yeah it was excellent
[00:22:20] Funny aside I have a co-worker and I'm not going to give anybody's personal info obviously but I have a co-worker whose daughter had a friendly like
[00:22:28] They were friends about it but a rivalry with her a boy in her class where they always were like
[00:22:35] I'm going to get the best grade no I am no I am every like they were always the top two and they were like
[00:22:40] I'm going to be valedictorian no I'm not no you're not because I am
[00:22:43] She ended up my girl ended up being the valedictorian and he was the salutatorian
[00:22:48] And I just like I've always told like my co-worker her mom I've read this book
[00:22:55] When they get married please invite me to the wedding
[00:22:58] So that I can like live it in real life and like see it
[00:23:02] We work from home now but like we have like in person events every now and then like right just team building or whatever
[00:23:08] Every time I see her mom I'm like so how is your daughter and how is this boy's name because I know that they
[00:23:14] I've read this book
[00:23:15] You're in college now but I've read this book
[00:23:17] But I know they're still in contact how are they doing
[00:23:22] I love it
[00:23:23] This has been like since this little girl was in like the fourth grade that I've known about this
[00:23:29] Little little kids who are like I'm gonna do better than he is even in like sports they did like yeah same sports
[00:23:36] I'm gonna get better stats than you I'm gonna win my game and you're not going to
[00:23:42] But they were like friendly about it they weren't being mean they were like yeah yeah are you will watch you
[00:23:47] Right
[00:23:48] And the funny thing is the funny thing is Sadie has like this internal like grading system
[00:23:56] So like every time something happens she gives it a like a certain amount of points based on what happens so like oh
[00:24:03] I got a better score on the math death than Julius that's plus three points for me dang it he won this sporting event
[00:24:10] He gets plus five points and she has like mentally calculated this throughout their entire lives
[00:24:17] And I'm like this girl you are so obsessed with him like
[00:24:21] I hope she has a spreadsheet otherwise how do you keep track
[00:24:25] It is like such a very fine line and this is like the perfect example of like it's such a fine line between love and hate
[00:24:32] Oh yeah
[00:24:33] It is the teeny tiniest finest little line
[00:24:36] And it's just it's so good
[00:24:39] So good
[00:24:40] And then I read the neighbor wager by I didn't write down that I think it's Crystal Caswell yes it is
[00:24:48] So you have River who was the nerdy boy next door and now he's all grown up and not the nerdy boy next door
[00:24:57] He's all tatted up he's he went away to Europe and got hot not literally but like he got hot
[00:25:04] He went away to New York and got hot
[00:25:06] And he since they were kids had a crush on the neighbor girl Lexi who was like blonde tall beautiful everything
[00:25:16] All the things like boys wet dream right but since they were kids her older sister Deanna was like listen she doesn't see you like that
[00:25:23] Like she was really trying to spare him his feelings because she knew how her sister was right
[00:25:30] And so now they're all grown up he is back from New York visiting with his grandmother who is their next door neighbor
[00:25:39] And they're living in okay these people are like rich so they're living at their father's house but they have an apartment at the house
[00:25:48] Okay so they're living at the apartments at their dad's house which is still next door to River's grandma's house
[00:25:56] And Deanna and Lexi have created a dating app called meet cute
[00:26:02] It is very much they're very much trying to get investors to come and help them because they want to make sure it takes off
[00:26:09] They're very proud of the algorithm and all the work they've put into it
[00:26:12] And so they meet with somebody who is like I love this we need once again we need a poster couple
[00:26:20] I don't know how I themed this
[00:26:24] This was very unintentional and I'm just now realizing how insane this sounds
[00:26:31] Anyways
[00:26:32] You had a type this week okay
[00:26:34] Apparently I did so Lexi met her current boyfriend on the app
[00:26:40] And Lexi is very much like not a relationship person
[00:26:44] She's very much like casual sex one and done not into my feelings kind of thing
[00:26:51] And she's never been interested in getting married or doing a relationship or anything like that
[00:26:57] But she meets a boy on the app and they're like six months strong and this is like legitimately a big deal okay
[00:27:04] Everybody like Deanna and Lexi are both surprised and they're both like really happy about it because it means that their app is working
[00:27:11] It like pairs people up there's no photos on the app
[00:27:14] It just pairs them up based on their responses to certain questions and things they like and mutual interest and things like that
[00:27:22] And so the investor is like okay what we're gonna do is you guys are going to be the poster couple
[00:27:30] And basically kind of is like wouldn't mind if you guys showed up at our next meeting with a ring on your finger or something
[00:27:39] And Lexi panics right because she's like oh no I don't do this shit
[00:27:46] And so first thing Lexi does is goes to the boyfriend and they have a conversation
[00:27:51] They take a break right where they are gonna take a break for two weeks
[00:27:56] And then come back together and see if the relationship is working
[00:28:01] And in this time they are allowed to see other people
[00:28:04] Very clear very like strict boundaries and they're very clear about it
[00:28:08] So nobody's like cheating there's no nobody's running around on it
[00:28:13] Which more people need to do this if they are questioning they're really like if you're not sure
[00:28:18] If you're not sure don't run around and cheat just have a conversation
[00:28:22] You're a grown up it's okay you're allowed to be a grown up
[00:28:26] Exactly
[00:28:27] Preferred actually
[00:28:28] Right and so Lexi sees River and is like dude is hot I'm gonna hit that during my break
[00:28:36] And Deanna is like we need them to stay together so that we can get this app to work
[00:28:42] So she runs interference between Lexi and River
[00:28:45] And while running interference in order to save the potential for funding for their app
[00:28:50] River and Deanna get a little closer than they have ever been
[00:28:55] And well you know things happen
[00:28:58] And River's little crush on Lexi is like what crush?
[00:29:03] I had a crush on her
[00:29:05] This is silly
[00:29:06] That never happened I feel like that's a lie
[00:29:09] It's cute I liked it it was a good time
[00:29:11] It was like it was a little annoying at times
[00:29:14] But I mean sometimes when people are being idiots in a novel
[00:29:18] You just they're just it's just a little too much
[00:29:21] It's the plot
[00:29:22] It's the story you know it's meant to be annoying
[00:29:25] So yeah I liked it
[00:29:26] And then I read I finished The Ren and the Holly Library by K.A. Lindy
[00:29:32] This book guys
[00:29:33] It is a spicy heist romanticy
[00:29:36] Enemies to lovers
[00:29:38] Force proximity
[00:29:40] Slow burn
[00:29:41] Loosely based on Beauty and the Beast
[00:29:44] Checking so many boxes
[00:29:45] With elements of like historical easter eggs
[00:29:49] Like think post-World War I
[00:29:52] And it just
[00:29:53] Every single box I have
[00:29:55] Is there Shadow Daddy?
[00:29:58] I'm just kidding
[00:30:00] That would be like the last checkbox right
[00:30:03] I don't know that I could ever read another book after
[00:30:06] Like it is
[00:30:07] Does Aaron Warner show up?
[00:30:09] The vibes are so vibing
[00:30:11] Like it is I say less
[00:30:15] Like just say less
[00:30:16] There's so many elements to it
[00:30:18] And they all work so well together
[00:30:20] And it's just like my god
[00:30:22] Did I love it
[00:30:23] It was so good
[00:30:24] And I'm like so frantic for book two
[00:30:28] I need the right now
[00:30:30] So yeah
[00:30:31] It comes out on June 4th
[00:30:34] You guys go get it
[00:30:35] If you like any of those elements
[00:30:38] Literally any one of them
[00:30:41] It's so good
[00:30:42] Like I don't even
[00:30:43] I've always said I'm not really a slow burn girly
[00:30:46] But it's needed
[00:30:48] It's needed
[00:30:49] And it gets there
[00:30:50] And it's perfect
[00:30:51] So good
[00:30:52] So yeah
[00:30:53] And then last night
[00:30:55] I went to a book tour event
[00:30:58] Just a little one
[00:30:59] Not a big deal
[00:31:00] Kevin freaking Kwan
[00:31:01] Author of Crazy Rich Asians
[00:31:03] For his newest book
[00:31:04] Lies and Weddings
[00:31:05] Which just came out earlier this week
[00:31:07] So when you're hearing this
[00:31:08] It'll be like last week
[00:31:10] So I have to tell you this story
[00:31:12] That he told
[00:31:13] First of all
[00:31:14] He's hilarious
[00:31:15] Of course he is
[00:31:16] If you've read his books
[00:31:18] Like he's just as funny
[00:31:19] He's just as funny
[00:31:20] I adore him
[00:31:22] But we were in Menlo Park
[00:31:24] In the Bay Area
[00:31:25] And I don't know if you know this
[00:31:27] But John Chu
[00:31:29] His family
[00:31:30] Grew up in Palo Alto
[00:31:31] Also in the Bay Area
[00:31:32] And so John Chu's mother
[00:31:34] Was in the audience
[00:31:35] Which was so sweet
[00:31:37] And then at one point
[00:31:38] I don't know if he called her
[00:31:40] Or she called him
[00:31:41] But he was on FaceTime
[00:31:42] John Chu was on FaceTime
[00:31:43] During this event
[00:31:45] In a room you're in?
[00:31:46] In a room that I was in
[00:31:48] I was in a room
[00:31:49] Where there was a lot of people
[00:31:51] And there was John Chu on a FaceTime
[00:31:53] I don't know how you don't just fall out
[00:31:56] I don't know
[00:31:59] So that was fun
[00:32:01] And so if you somehow don't know
[00:32:03] John Chu was the director
[00:32:05] Of Crazy Rich Asians
[00:32:06] Anybody who's been living under the rock
[00:32:08] Under a rock, not the rock though
[00:32:10] That's a very different thing
[00:32:12] That would be a really weird place to live
[00:32:14] It was a very different thing
[00:32:16] So he is the director of Crazy Rich Asians
[00:32:19] He is also the director of the Wicked movie
[00:32:22] Among other things
[00:32:24] I'm dying
[00:32:25] Among other things
[00:32:26] So John Chu, big deal
[00:32:28] Okay, so somebody asked a question about
[00:32:31] Because Rachel Chu's family
[00:32:33] Is from Cupertino in the book
[00:32:35] And so somebody asked the question
[00:32:37] Like Kevin, did you spend a lot of time
[00:32:40] In the Bay Area?
[00:32:41] Do you have friends here?
[00:32:42] Tell us about that
[00:32:43] And so he starts telling us the story
[00:32:46] And at first it doesn't seem to be connected
[00:32:49] But it gets there
[00:32:50] So when he was living in New York
[00:32:53] He was talking to a friend of his
[00:32:55] About her family and their dynamic
[00:32:58] And realizing how very different
[00:33:00] From his family and his upbringing was
[00:33:02] And so he was like, huh
[00:33:05] And so he kind of wrote that family
[00:33:07] Into Rachel's family in the book, right?
[00:33:09] And so this friend of his had
[00:33:11] Like a cousin or something
[00:33:13] Who was trying to like break into Hollywood
[00:33:16] Trying to become a director in Hollywood
[00:33:19] And so he also writes this into the book
[00:33:22] And so years later
[00:33:24] When they're trying to pick a director
[00:33:26] For the movie
[00:33:27] John Chu's reading this book, right?
[00:33:29] And he's talking to Kevin
[00:33:31] And he's like, wow
[00:33:32] This really reminds me of my family
[00:33:37] The friend was John Chu's cousin
[00:33:40] Oh my god
[00:33:41] How insane is that?
[00:33:42] That is so wild
[00:33:44] Isn't that insane?
[00:33:45] The universe?
[00:33:46] Knows
[00:33:47] It knows what it's doing
[00:33:48] Insane, insane
[00:33:50] Absolutely insane
[00:33:51] Kevin was like, yeah
[00:33:52] It reminds you of your family
[00:33:53] Because it is your family
[00:33:54] I wrote it based on your family
[00:33:56] Like wild, wild
[00:33:58] Everybody lost it
[00:33:59] Like that is an insane story
[00:34:01] And insane
[00:34:02] You can't
[00:34:03] Like I don't think you can make something like that up
[00:34:05] No
[00:34:06] That feels like fiction
[00:34:08] But like so insane fiction that it just
[00:34:10] What?
[00:34:11] So yeah
[00:34:12] That was a story that I wrote down
[00:34:14] Because I had to share that
[00:34:16] It was just
[00:34:17] Wow
[00:34:18] So yeah, good times
[00:34:19] It was so fun
[00:34:20] He was amazing
[00:34:22] It was a blast
[00:34:23] I texted you this while I was there
[00:34:25] But he was his conversation partner
[00:34:27] Was a friend of his
[00:34:28] And she was asking these really great questions
[00:34:30] And he at one point he was like
[00:34:32] Man, she's a really hard interviewer, right?
[00:34:34] And my first reaction was like
[00:34:36] We wouldn't have been
[00:34:37] Come hang out
[00:34:38] We would be nice to you
[00:34:40] We're too anxious to have hard questions
[00:34:43] No
[00:34:44] We're too incoherent
[00:34:45] We would not have been able to keep it together
[00:34:47] I just want to have your fictional boyfriend this week
[00:34:51] Cried
[00:34:52] Oh my god
[00:34:53] So that was my week
[00:34:55] It was a good time
[00:34:56] I had a good time this week
[00:34:57] This isn't this week in fan girling
[00:35:00] But the show husband read a book
[00:35:02] Stop
[00:35:03] What'd he read?
[00:35:04] Tell me more
[00:35:05] He's in a new spot at work
[00:35:07] Where he is at a desk more
[00:35:09] And so he's able to listen to books
[00:35:11] He listened to the silent patient
[00:35:13] And then what made me think of this
[00:35:15] Was when I brought up Aaron Warner
[00:35:17] As I love to sneak in any conversation
[00:35:19] Of course
[00:35:20] Because he finished the silent patient
[00:35:21] And he was like
[00:35:22] I don't know if I want something where
[00:35:24] I have to pay attention to every single minute detail with this
[00:35:27] Because he's like
[00:35:28] I'm still working
[00:35:29] Right
[00:35:30] So I was like
[00:35:31] Well you might like all of us villains
[00:35:33] You might like
[00:35:34] And I threw out a couple
[00:35:35] I've got Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
[00:35:37] I threw out a couple of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
[00:35:38] On hold for him when it comes up
[00:35:40] I was like
[00:35:41] You might really like shatter me
[00:35:42] And then I was like
[00:35:43] But do I want you to know Aaron?
[00:35:45] I don't know
[00:35:46] Like do I want my real life husband
[00:35:48] To like really know Aaron Warner?
[00:35:51] I don't know
[00:35:53] He went with Medlin Kids
[00:35:55] Which I don't know the author off the top of my head
[00:35:57] And I don't know where on my shelf it is
[00:35:59] But he's listening to Medlin Kids now
[00:36:01] And then he was like
[00:36:02] I also asked me
[00:36:03] Okay
[00:36:04] Said
[00:36:05] So I do need to like get that eventually
[00:36:08] What?
[00:36:09] You want this?
[00:36:13] I love this
[00:36:14] It's not just like me when we're like driving, traveling
[00:36:18] And I'm like
[00:36:19] Guess what we're gonna listen to
[00:36:20] It's fourth wing
[00:36:21] I love this for you
[00:36:23] I love this for you
[00:36:25] And I love this for him
[00:36:26] And this is the best
[00:36:27] What if he
[00:36:28] Listen
[00:36:29] Manifesting
[00:36:30] I love my husband
[00:36:31] Okay
[00:36:32] Manifesting
[00:36:33] What if he does read Shatter Me and Bridgerton
[00:36:34] And all that
[00:36:35] And then becomes a monologuer
[00:36:37] Oh my god
[00:36:40] I love this for you
[00:36:42] Anyways
[00:36:43] I just had to give that aside
[00:36:44] Because yay show husband read books
[00:36:46] That's very exciting
[00:36:47] Good job
[00:36:48] I love it
[00:36:49] All right
[00:36:55] Do you have a fictional boyfriend this week?
[00:36:58] How could I not?
[00:36:59] Truly
[00:37:00] How could I not?
[00:37:01] Okay
[00:37:02] I've already waxed
[00:37:03] How could you pick?
[00:37:04] I've already wax poetic about Silas and Julius
[00:37:08] And their monologues
[00:37:09] Like I don't need to say more
[00:37:10] But also
[00:37:11] And I said this to you
[00:37:13] When I was reading The Wren and the Holly Library
[00:37:15] I met Nate O'Connor
[00:37:16] Nathaniel O'Connor
[00:37:17] Okay
[00:37:18] Like three paragraphs
[00:37:19] Like I think I'm in love with him
[00:37:21] I think I'm in love with him
[00:37:23] Did he do anything?
[00:37:25] Did he do anything?
[00:37:26] No
[00:37:27] He just existed
[00:37:28] And I love him
[00:37:29] I don't know why
[00:37:30] I could not tell you why
[00:37:32] But I love this man
[00:37:34] I love him
[00:37:35] I love him
[00:37:36] I don't know why
[00:37:37] That's mean when they were like
[00:37:38] They call him the Darkling
[00:37:39] I could not tell you why
[00:37:41] They call him the what now?
[00:37:43] I'm in head over heels
[00:37:44] I just
[00:37:45] Head over heels
[00:37:46] Let's get matching tattoos
[00:37:47] They call him the Darkling
[00:37:48] Gold
[00:37:49] So yeah, Nate O'Connor
[00:37:52] Who by the way
[00:37:53] In the book
[00:37:54] Is a werewolf
[00:37:55] So I mean
[00:37:56] I guess there was part of it
[00:37:57] But just
[00:37:58] Listen, yeah
[00:37:59] I love a werewolf
[00:38:00] Man
[00:38:01] He just
[00:38:02] I love him
[00:38:03] But also from The Wren and the Holly Library
[00:38:05] Graves
[00:38:06] He is the like male main character
[00:38:08] Slash love interest slash
[00:38:10] Beast inspired character
[00:38:12] Yes
[00:38:13] He's Graves
[00:38:15] Again
[00:38:16] Graves
[00:38:17] Sign me up
[00:38:18] Listen
[00:38:19] Great name
[00:38:20] Yeah
[00:38:21] And he
[00:38:23] He has an ability
[00:38:25] That we find out about later
[00:38:27] That is very
[00:38:28] That is related to him wearing gloves all the time
[00:38:31] To prevent his power
[00:38:34] From being used
[00:38:36] So I just
[00:38:37] Just
[00:38:38] There's something about a man that cannot touch you
[00:38:41] That is just
[00:38:43] Okay
[00:38:44] Okay
[00:38:45] Alright, sold
[00:38:46] You got me
[00:38:48] Anyways
[00:38:49] Your turn
[00:38:50] Tell me yours
[00:38:51] As if I need to ask
[00:38:52] I feel like this is the exact same thing I said last week about Larry Russell
[00:38:56] But
[00:38:57] If it was not Colin Bridgerton
[00:38:59] I was body snatched
[00:39:01] Right
[00:39:02] Someone kidnapped me and this is a drone
[00:39:05] If it was not Colin Bridgerton
[00:39:07] There would be a drone sitting here pretending to be me
[00:39:09] Right
[00:39:10] The chest hair
[00:39:11] As we've established from my awakening in 2004
[00:39:15] Pride and Prejudice
[00:39:17] The chest hair
[00:39:19] The
[00:39:20] I don't know
[00:39:21] Like they
[00:39:22] I don't know what they've done
[00:39:23] Like his face
[00:39:24] His whole face
[00:39:25] Is just like chiseled to perfection
[00:39:27] My god
[00:39:28] And then
[00:39:29] Creaton
[00:39:32] Who comes
[00:39:33] up in my head
[00:39:35] And he gets wrinkled
[00:39:37] So he can
[00:39:39] He shows me
[00:39:40] specifically
[00:39:42] That制
[00:39:42] He doesn't
[00:39:43] Mins
[00:39:43] Or
[00:39:47] That
[00:39:48] He doesn't
[00:39:49] Don't
[00:39:49] He nos
[00:39:51] Don't
[00:39:51] He
[00:39:53] No
[00:39:54] No
[00:39:56] W
[00:39:57] Hi
[00:39:57] Um
[00:39:58] Hi
[00:39:58] that people have noticed that is like my mind, my mind, my mind.
[00:40:04] I love it.
[00:40:06] There were apparently there was at least one spicy scene that was being filmed where they
[00:40:12] kept going because they didn't hear cut, cut, cut, cut.
[00:40:20] Didn't hear it.
[00:40:21] They broke a prop in recording.
[00:40:27] Hopefully this is a joke, but it's is it though?
[00:40:29] Darcy and I really hate this girl who apparently is his real life girlfriend because these
[00:40:35] two are supposed to be together in real life.
[00:40:37] You watch their interviews and stuff together.
[00:40:40] It's like you are so good at acting that like I am convinced you are soulmates.
[00:40:45] Their body language, all of it done.
[00:40:48] It's Colin Bridgerton.
[00:40:49] My God.
[00:40:50] I love it.
[00:40:51] I'm sick.
[00:40:52] It's fine.
[00:40:53] I don't want to get better.
[00:40:56] So there's that.
[00:40:58] That sound means we have an intruder alert.
[00:41:06] Oh, it's a repeat offender.
[00:41:08] Welcome back to the podcast.
[00:41:09] We've got Robbie Couch.
[00:41:11] We're here to talk about next book and then their first chance.
[00:41:15] Welcome back to the podcast.
[00:41:16] How dare you first of all?
[00:41:17] How dare you?
[00:41:18] Thanks for having me back y'all.
[00:41:22] Very excited to be here.
[00:41:24] And this is I think this is like the first legit interview I've had to promote
[00:41:29] the book.
[00:41:30] I've done like other small things and panels and book festivals, but this is like the
[00:41:34] kickoff of launch week for me, which is kind of exciting.
[00:41:38] So happy to be with both of you.
[00:41:40] Oh, this is so amazing.
[00:41:41] Thank you so much for being here.
[00:41:43] Of course.
[00:41:44] All right.
[00:41:45] So give us the quick elevator pitch of the book.
[00:41:49] If somebody has been living under a rock and doesn't know anything about it, let them
[00:41:53] know what it is about.
[00:41:54] I'm sure there are billions of people that have never heard about the book, but just
[00:41:56] in case.
[00:41:57] Yeah.
[00:41:58] So another first chance follows River, whose best friend Dylan died in a car accident
[00:42:04] a year before the book begins.
[00:42:07] And River's really going through it.
[00:42:09] He is grieving.
[00:42:12] Yeah, he's not in a good place.
[00:42:14] And so he enters the affinity trials, which is a social science experiment happening
[00:42:20] at his high school over the summer for teens who are struggling socially.
[00:42:25] And once he's in the trial, though, he starts to explore feelings that maybe Dylan was
[00:42:31] more than just a friend and at the same time starts to learn more about what researchers
[00:42:36] are actually studying at the affinity trials.
[00:42:39] And spoiler alert, it's not what they said it was going to be.
[00:42:43] So yeah, I'm really excited about this book.
[00:42:46] It's number four out in the world.
[00:42:47] This is wild.
[00:42:49] And I can't wait for May 28th.
[00:42:50] Yes.
[00:42:52] So where did the affinity trials come from?
[00:42:54] Because I freaking love this.
[00:42:56] Yes.
[00:42:57] Oh, thanks.
[00:42:58] Like the idea for the trials themselves?
[00:43:00] Yeah.
[00:43:01] Or like the whole book.
[00:43:02] It's a good question.
[00:43:03] All of it, yeah.
[00:43:04] I mean...
[00:43:05] Okay, yeah, the whole book.
[00:43:06] Yeah, I think it started from a place of...
[00:43:10] So grief is obviously a very big theme of the book and River is grieving his
[00:43:16] friend Dylan, his best friend Dylan, right from the very beginning.
[00:43:19] I think weirdly enough, the form of grief that more inspired the book was my own kind
[00:43:25] of reflecting back on my closeted teen self and feeling like those were lost years in
[00:43:31] a certain sense.
[00:43:32] And even though I had an amazing time while I was in high school, it was also filled
[00:43:37] with a lot of heartbreak and pain and trauma related to being closeted.
[00:43:41] And I think a lot of queer people can relate to that.
[00:43:44] So I was sort of exploring themes or story ideas that had to do with grief relating
[00:43:50] to the lost years of closeted teens.
[00:43:55] And so that might not make a lot of sense on its head, but I think for those who read
[00:44:00] the book, it might make more sense knowing the full story about the what could have
[00:44:04] been element of River and Dylan's experience.
[00:44:07] So that's where the original concept kind of began.
[00:44:11] I like it.
[00:44:13] So you do have like a little prequel short story that you wrote, like as an accompaniment
[00:44:20] to this book.
[00:44:21] Did you know that you did you have that planned when you wrote this book to have
[00:44:26] this short story out into the world?
[00:44:28] Or was it something that you finished the book and you're like, I could make this
[00:44:31] hurt a little bit more.
[00:44:33] No, I was definitely not planned.
[00:44:37] It was sort of a last minute thing last fall, I believe.
[00:44:43] I think it was last fall, the Simon Teen team came to me and was like, hey, we love this
[00:44:49] book.
[00:44:50] We think it's a really great it could use it could use the prequel because it has
[00:44:55] as you guys know from reading it, there's a lot of backstory.
[00:44:59] And this is also the first book I did that was a dual POV.
[00:45:01] So you for about a quarter of the book, maybe maybe more like a fifth of the book,
[00:45:06] you're in Dylan's POV through Dylan's chapters.
[00:45:09] And so there was a lot of and then there was then there was like storylines referencing
[00:45:14] back to when River, Dylan and Mavis were freshmen.
[00:45:18] So I didn't want the book to feel too overwhelming with information from all these different
[00:45:24] high school years, which hopefully I avoided doing in the book.
[00:45:27] But to that end, the team at Simon was just like, hey, this would be really great
[00:45:31] to have a prequel and have some context to their history that really teases and
[00:45:38] leads up to the story itself.
[00:45:39] So I was really excited to write it.
[00:45:41] But yeah, I kind of I crammed it.
[00:45:43] I wrote it in a few weeks, I think around the holidays and yeah, but it's been cool.
[00:45:49] It's been awesome getting reader feedback to it.
[00:45:51] And I'm glad I got to write it.
[00:45:53] OK, so speaking of Dylan's chapters, because I love how you gave us Dylan's POV
[00:45:58] where we can fall in love with him just like everyone else who meets him does.
[00:46:02] But what was making his chapter headings an outline, like a conscious choice since
[00:46:07] he's not here or was that something that somebody at Simon just was like,
[00:46:10] we're going to do this?
[00:46:11] Yeah. Yeah, I can't take credit for that.
[00:46:13] I thought that was so cool.
[00:46:15] Yeah, I'm trying to find one.
[00:46:17] I thought it was cool too.
[00:46:18] I know. Yeah, that is so cool though.
[00:46:21] I thought it was a cool design element.
[00:46:22] Yeah, it was the I don't know the specific designer, but it was someone on the design team
[00:46:27] at Simon because we had a conversation around like, OK, it would be cool to do
[00:46:31] something that's not a distraction from the story, but can still kind of
[00:46:36] highlight, OK, I'm going back into Rivers POV or Dylan's POV.
[00:46:40] So I thought that was sort of a subtle but telling design choice.
[00:46:44] But yeah, I dig it.
[00:46:45] Yeah. So there's a lot of like different threads to you can kind of pull on in this
[00:46:51] book, like there's a couple of different like storylines that are running through it.
[00:46:55] How did you manage to kind of keep all of that straight?
[00:46:58] Did you plot it all out in advance so that you knew like, I can drop little hints
[00:47:03] here that lead up to this because there are definitely those.
[00:47:07] Or was it kind of just an overall idea and you just went with the flow?
[00:47:11] Yeah, I'm a plotter.
[00:47:13] I always outline, outline, outline like I'm losing my mind.
[00:47:19] I'm and it was I'm with this book especially, I felt like I had to really make
[00:47:24] sure I was like dotting my eyes, crossing my T's.
[00:47:27] There were so many chapters that actually had to be rewritten.
[00:47:31] And like just because it was such a sort of similar to If I See You Again Tomorrow,
[00:47:36] my last book, which because that was a Groundhog's Day time loop story,
[00:47:40] the consistency between scenes really had to be like perfect.
[00:47:44] And I felt like this story, there's no like time hopping or time traveling
[00:47:48] in this book, but because there was the dual POVs and different time periods,
[00:47:53] I had to be really careful of, yeah, to your point, kind of introducing things
[00:47:57] at certain times and yeah, it was all just in the preparation of the book
[00:48:03] and then pulling my hair out quite a bit while I grabbed it and realized what a
[00:48:07] headache I had caused for myself.
[00:48:10] So, yeah, outline.
[00:48:12] So I've always tried to subscribe and remind myself that anxiety is your brain
[00:48:17] lying to you whenever I have like anxious moments.
[00:48:21] But there's a quote from this book that I like feel will be even more helpful
[00:48:25] for me and a lot of other people in the future.
[00:48:28] And I'm going to just give like the shorter version of it because it can get long.
[00:48:31] The catastrophic thought pestering you was born from a series of electrical
[00:48:35] reactions contained in a three pound sponge of flesh floating between your ears.
[00:48:40] And like, I don't want to diminish anything anyone's going through ever.
[00:48:44] Like, I know there are real true reasons for anxiety, but like it helped me
[00:48:48] realize that like things that I worry about on a day to day basis are not
[00:48:51] catastrophic at all.
[00:48:52] They really aren't that serious.
[00:48:53] They're in a sponge.
[00:48:55] So like, is that like a mentality that you add, like you use yourself?
[00:48:59] Like this is just, this is just a thing in here or did it come to
[00:49:02] you while you were writing?
[00:49:04] It's such a good question.
[00:49:05] I am trying to think if it, I think I had like kind of like a placeholder
[00:49:10] in that to quote from what the specific quote would be.
[00:49:14] And then I wrote through it at first, if I'm remembering correctly, and
[00:49:17] then came back and wrote it once I could really focus on the language of that.
[00:49:21] But I love that you like that quote because I do too.
[00:49:25] And I don't want, yeah, I definitely don't want to like minimize or trivialize
[00:49:31] anyone's anxiety because of course it's like, that's the weird thing with
[00:49:36] anxiety is like, it can be so irrational and of course, yeah, it can be so real
[00:49:42] to you regardless of how like reasonable your anxiety is quote unquote reasonable.
[00:49:48] And so, yeah, it was more about hopefully this idea of like empowering yourself
[00:49:54] to be able to, yeah, not let those anxious thoughts just kind of drain
[00:49:59] you and take you out of the present too much.
[00:50:02] But I love that it started to cord with you.
[00:50:05] It really did.
[00:50:06] I was like sitting there trying not to sob.
[00:50:08] This is everything I needed to read right now.
[00:50:10] Speaking of the three pound sponge inside our brains, there's there are bits
[00:50:15] and pieces of like actual I mean, I don't know if it's actual like neuroscience
[00:50:20] stuff because I'm not anything related to that, but it did seem like there was
[00:50:26] you know, some research that you needed to do for those parts.
[00:50:30] How much of how much research did you do for that?
[00:50:33] And did you like call anybody in to help you with it or was it all like
[00:50:37] Google help me?
[00:50:38] Yeah, no, they're actually the same question and great minds.
[00:50:44] Mine was are you secretly a neurologist?
[00:50:46] So no, but my sister is a neurologist and she's going to be a part of this
[00:50:51] answer. So I actually did do quite a bit of research, but it was I had it
[00:50:56] was one of the earlier without giving too much away chapters or Nora once
[00:51:02] they're in the trials, she's explaining kind of it was the the chapter which is
[00:51:07] kind of leaning into a lot of the brain science with River for the first time.
[00:51:12] And that chapter originally was so much more like dense and heavy and like
[00:51:17] medical. And I was like, why am I doing this?
[00:51:19] So I I had done enough research to really hopefully sound like I know
[00:51:25] what I'm talking about and then ended up taking quite a bit out of it
[00:51:28] to help like streamline the romance and not have readers get too I don't want
[00:51:33] to say distracted, but too focused on like the the neurology of it at all.
[00:51:39] But so I did a lot of research and then, yeah, I recruited my sister
[00:51:44] who's a neurologist to she didn't do like a full like authenticity read,
[00:51:49] but I would send her different paragraphs or pages that had to do
[00:51:54] with brain science. And of course, because it was written through Rivers
[00:51:58] perspective, you know, he's not a doctor, even though he's very smart
[00:52:02] and wants to be. And so I didn't want to read as though like, you
[00:52:06] know, what 40 year old neurologist expert in their field book, but I
[00:52:12] wanted to still feel like it was somewhat informed.
[00:52:14] So yeah, it was really fun.
[00:52:17] I learned a lot about the brain.
[00:52:18] It's a wild organ.
[00:52:21] Actually, I had your book with me for an appointment and the neurologist
[00:52:25] just for migraines is nothing serious.
[00:52:27] But yeah, that's scary.
[00:52:29] So like, hey, can you, uh, read her for a couple hours?
[00:52:35] I wasn't given this up.
[00:52:37] Are you crazy?
[00:52:39] No, but yeah, that that's really cool that you're like you were
[00:52:43] able to just like, you know, just like, you know, just like
[00:52:47] I'm not going to make myself look like cool, right?
[00:52:49] Exactly. That was the goal.
[00:52:51] And yeah, she my sister has been like my number one supporter
[00:52:54] with with reading my books and getting super excited.
[00:52:57] So like she was really excited to be involved in the process,
[00:53:00] which made me excited excited.
[00:53:02] So yeah, it was a really it was a really fun process like
[00:53:04] teaming up with her for the book a little bit.
[00:53:07] I love that.
[00:53:08] I can't remember who it is that it means that you're going to
[00:53:11] have to read the book.
[00:53:13] I love that.
[00:53:15] I can't remember who it is that meets River, but he somebody
[00:53:19] makes a joke about all your parents must be really outdoorsy
[00:53:22] or whatever.
[00:53:23] But we've got River and we've got sky.
[00:53:25] Are you really outdoorsy?
[00:53:28] Are you the parent who's really outdoorsy with your
[00:53:31] characters?
[00:53:33] That's a good question.
[00:53:36] I'm it's weird because I'm you asked that as I'm planning
[00:53:39] a trip to like hike Mount Baldy.
[00:53:42] Have you heard of Mount Baldy in California?
[00:53:45] It's like one of the highest mountains here and I'm so
[00:53:48] nervous because I'm by far the least outdoorsy person on
[00:53:51] this trip.
[00:53:51] So I'm texting the group like do we need water and they're
[00:53:55] like yeah, it's 10 mile hike.
[00:53:57] You should probably bring water.
[00:53:59] So I'm that person.
[00:54:01] So I don't know.
[00:54:02] I don't think I'm ever going to convince anyone.
[00:54:03] I'm like a true outdoorsy gay.
[00:54:07] I'm with you.
[00:54:07] I say I'm very indoorsy like I my outdoorsy is like
[00:54:12] brunch on a patio.
[00:54:14] That's outdoors for me.
[00:54:16] That's what I want.
[00:54:16] Like I don't like a hike sounds wonderful.
[00:54:19] I'm very proud of you for wanting to go on a 10 mile
[00:54:22] hike because I would be like, where do we stop for
[00:54:24] snacks?
[00:54:25] Like what food are we going to eat though?
[00:54:27] Well, that's like half the reason why I'm okay with
[00:54:30] going because apparently there's like a restaurant
[00:54:33] slash brewery on the way down and so I'm like,
[00:54:36] okay, if I have like a burger beer to focus on
[00:54:39] coming back down this 10 mile hike.
[00:54:41] Motivation.
[00:54:42] Like a little reward.
[00:54:44] Motivate me.
[00:54:45] I need a treat after.
[00:54:47] I'm going to have a tiny treat at the end of this.
[00:54:50] I love it.
[00:54:52] Yeah.
[00:54:53] Okay, so you've been here before so you know that
[00:54:56] we're going to ask you about your fictional
[00:54:58] boyfriend.
[00:54:59] Do you have any characters fictional characters that
[00:55:01] you're really like digging right now anybody that
[00:55:04] you think that we need to meet?
[00:55:06] Doesn't have to be a boyfriend.
[00:55:07] Yeah, Karen's had a fictional granny fictional found
[00:55:10] family all of the above and I'm trying to remember
[00:55:13] from last time was it just like in all of
[00:55:15] storytelling world or just YA or just literature
[00:55:18] anything anything anything anything YA fantasy
[00:55:22] okay crime procedural whatever.
[00:55:25] Yeah.
[00:55:26] Oh my gosh.
[00:55:27] I hope I'm not going to choose a boyfriend from
[00:55:29] a true crime story.
[00:55:32] I mean, I don't know.
[00:55:34] So this person's been on my mind a lot today
[00:55:36] because I've been listening to a podcast called
[00:55:39] offline where they're talking about her the the
[00:55:41] movie Bay with walking Phoenix and they the
[00:55:45] whole point of the podcast is like looking at
[00:55:48] like old movies older movies that had to do
[00:55:51] with like either AI or like tech advances and
[00:55:53] kind of reassessing them from the vantage point
[00:55:55] we're in now anyways, so I was like eating up
[00:55:58] that podcast thinking about the movie and her was
[00:56:01] actually one of the inspirations for this book.
[00:56:03] So even though there's like have you have you
[00:56:06] seen her?
[00:56:07] I know the premise.
[00:56:09] I need to yeah, I mean it does.
[00:56:10] There's lots of differences and it's not YA
[00:56:14] so it's not like it's the exact same story,
[00:56:16] but it definitely if you ever do see it.
[00:56:20] There's definitely similarities in terms of
[00:56:21] like the idea of well, I'm not going to
[00:56:24] say it because I almost spoiled something.
[00:56:26] So I would say very long story short walking
[00:56:29] Phoenix is someone who's been very much in
[00:56:32] my brain recently.
[00:56:33] Like he's been in my brain since walk the line.
[00:56:35] So yes, I was thinking the same.
[00:56:38] Yeah, I was in high school and it was like,
[00:56:41] oh, okay.
[00:56:42] No.
[00:56:42] All right.
[00:56:43] Yeah.
[00:56:44] All right then.
[00:56:46] For sure.
[00:56:47] He's all right.
[00:56:47] I'm like is he just generally problematic
[00:56:50] or is he totally fine?
[00:56:51] Like has he done some messed up self as
[00:56:53] I'm going to say that because I feel like
[00:56:56] I remember like there's an itch in my brain
[00:56:59] and yeah, that means about something problematic.
[00:57:03] Right.
[00:57:06] Problematic is problematic, but it's not something
[00:57:08] like anyone says Chris Brown.
[00:57:10] I'm like the Rihanna beater.
[00:57:12] No, right.
[00:57:13] Like it.
[00:57:14] I don't remember like a huge thing.
[00:57:16] Right something's itching in that.
[00:57:18] Yeah in that brain.
[00:57:20] Right?
[00:57:20] Yeah.
[00:57:21] Don't cancel us.
[00:57:25] I'm like I might be forgetting something.
[00:57:26] So please don't cancel me.
[00:57:28] Yeah.
[00:57:28] Okay.
[00:57:29] We know we love your books and we will
[00:57:30] like scream about your books from the top of all
[00:57:33] of the mountains that we're going to not hike
[00:57:36] but think about hiking.
[00:57:38] But we want to know what you are reading
[00:57:40] and what you're enjoying what you not even
[00:57:42] doesn't even have to be like right now,
[00:57:44] but like what are some books that you think
[00:57:46] that other people should read or movies
[00:57:48] that people should watch or anything any kind of media.
[00:57:51] I'm really into right now.
[00:57:53] I'm reading remarkably bright creatures.
[00:57:56] If you guys heard of that book linking on
[00:57:58] the author it's sitting over there
[00:58:00] and I can't see their name.
[00:58:02] I think it's Shelby Van Peltten something like that.
[00:58:07] That's what I think it says from over here.
[00:58:09] I think I think you're right.
[00:58:10] It's definitely Shelby something.
[00:58:11] It's something along those lines.
[00:58:14] Yes, and it's a very good book about
[00:58:18] older woman who like is volunteering
[00:58:20] or working at an aquarium at night
[00:58:23] and be friends an octopus that lives there
[00:58:26] which sounds very absurd
[00:58:28] and it sort of is absurd.
[00:58:29] But the way that the story is told it's so heartfelt
[00:58:33] and I already know I'm going to be sobbing at the end of it
[00:58:36] and she actually kind of forms this like very unlikely
[00:58:38] friendship with an octopus and it's told in the first person
[00:58:42] through the octopus perspective in octopus chapters.
[00:58:46] I would have thought like how could anyone do that
[00:58:48] without it being like a Pixar movie,
[00:58:50] but it's done really well.
[00:58:52] So I'm so intrigued.
[00:58:54] I love that.
[00:58:55] Yeah.
[00:58:57] Yeah, it's a good one.
[00:58:58] And I also just finished Desert Echoes with it
[00:59:02] which is Abdi's new book
[00:59:04] and actually has quite a few similarities
[00:59:07] with my new book Another First Chance
[00:59:09] which is funny because he's doing my launch event on Tuesday
[00:59:12] and so we'll definitely be talking about
[00:59:13] some of the fun similarities
[00:59:14] but it's a really really good book
[00:59:16] Tearjerker so heartfelt
[00:59:18] and I think it comes out in the fall.
[00:59:21] So have your eyes peeled for that.
[00:59:24] Awesome.
[00:59:25] I'm gonna have to yeah.
[00:59:26] Yeah, okay.
[00:59:27] So I know Another First Chance isn't quite out yet
[00:59:30] when this episode airs it will be out
[00:59:33] but can you tell us anything about
[00:59:35] are you working on anything right now?
[00:59:37] What can we expect from you?
[00:59:39] What's to come Robbie?
[00:59:41] Yeah, I have another book that I'm working on right now
[00:59:43] that I'm very excited about.
[00:59:45] I would say the working title
[00:59:47] but it's emphasis on the working
[00:59:49] so it might change.
[00:59:52] And it also is in a similar vein of
[00:59:56] If I See You Again Tomorrow and Another First Chance
[00:59:58] that's also yeah kind of going in a little bit of a
[01:00:01] speculative bent
[01:00:02] and I'm really excited about it has to do with
[01:00:05] memory and nostalgia
[01:00:06] and I'll leave it at that
[01:00:07] but I'm really really jazzed about it
[01:00:10] and that'll come out next year
[01:00:11] either the summer or fall
[01:00:13] we're still trying to figure out the exact pub date
[01:00:15] and then I have a few other things
[01:00:18] cooking on the back burner
[01:00:19] is that a thing you would like?
[01:00:21] So yeah, should be a fun couple years.
[01:00:24] I'm loving this little speculative kick you're on right now.
[01:00:27] Yeah.
[01:00:28] I am too.
[01:00:29] I'm not like a huge sci-fi person most of the time
[01:00:32] but I like a little bit of you know
[01:00:34] a little dash of surrealism or whatever.
[01:00:38] I'm not either
[01:00:38] but I'm a Robbie Couch person
[01:00:40] and so if you write it
[01:00:41] I'm like this is everything
[01:00:42] I never thought that I would love a time loop novel
[01:00:45] and like I never thought that
[01:00:46] that would be something I'd be interested in
[01:00:47] and I was like oh my God this is so good.
[01:00:51] Oh that makes me so happy.
[01:00:53] Yeah, a little bit for real.
[01:00:55] Yeah if you write it we'll read it.
[01:00:57] Yeah and then we will scream about it.
[01:00:59] I don't need a description
[01:01:00] your name is on it I am there.
[01:01:04] Oh my gosh.
[01:01:05] For sure.
[01:01:06] You guys are trying to be red.
[01:01:08] I do have a formal request
[01:01:11] that one of the next book tours
[01:01:13] comes to the east.
[01:01:15] The east coast.
[01:01:17] We love you in Georgia.
[01:01:18] I know.
[01:01:20] I know I would love to.
[01:01:22] I know it was hard.
[01:01:24] This one was a tricky one
[01:01:26] because it was right after Memorial Day
[01:01:27] and a lot of stores were either closed
[01:01:30] or like already booked
[01:01:31] or didn't want to have events
[01:01:32] so it was a little bit short of a tour this time
[01:01:36] but hopefully I'll be in Georgia next year.
[01:01:39] Are you in Atlanta?
[01:01:40] No I'm in Macon
[01:01:41] so I'm like an hour and a half from Atlanta.
[01:01:43] I will drive though.
[01:01:44] I'm not like I drive to Atlanta for events all the time
[01:01:47] it's not a big deal for me.
[01:01:49] Okay sweet noted.
[01:01:50] I'll try to get Atlanta on the list.
[01:01:53] Yes.
[01:01:55] I think Karen has some bad news to tell you though.
[01:01:57] We do we do have a little bit of bad news
[01:01:59] and I mean you've been here before
[01:02:01] so you know now that you have been on the podcast
[01:02:04] you are actually legally obligated to come back
[01:02:06] for all of your future book releases.
[01:02:08] It's just it was in the fine print,
[01:02:10] you know, I'm sorry.
[01:02:12] I'll see if my lawyer can find that.
[01:02:15] Of course.
[01:02:16] We always joke that it was in white font
[01:02:18] so unless you highlighted you wouldn't see it
[01:02:20] but it's there so.
[01:02:22] Good.
[01:02:24] Oh my gosh.
[01:02:25] If someone hasn't tried that yet they should.
[01:02:27] That's good.
[01:02:29] We need to not give people ideas like that though.
[01:02:32] I always think there was
[01:02:33] there was a commercial when I was in high school
[01:02:35] where it was like somebody
[01:02:37] I feel like it was like exhibit maybe
[01:02:39] it was like a rapper and this lady was like
[01:02:40] can I have your autograph?
[01:02:41] And then she's like he signs it
[01:02:43] and she's like this is legally binding
[01:02:44] and it was like a marriage contract or something.
[01:02:47] So anytime you say that
[01:02:49] that's what I'm thinking of is.
[01:02:50] Oh my goodness.
[01:02:51] Oh my gosh.
[01:02:54] No, I would love to come back.
[01:02:56] This is as I told you
[01:02:57] this is one of my favorite pods to go on
[01:02:58] so I will be glad to come back for every book.
[01:03:01] We can't wait.
[01:03:03] Yes we can't wait.
[01:03:04] All right friends another first chance
[01:03:07] if you're listening to this now
[01:03:08] this book is out in the world
[01:03:10] which means you can go into a bookstore
[01:03:13] no excuse that you haven't read it.
[01:03:14] You have no excuse.
[01:03:15] No excuse and while you're there
[01:03:17] go pick up his other three books
[01:03:19] because they're also excellent.
[01:03:21] Okay.
[01:03:22] We have never steered you wrong.
[01:03:23] Cosine.
[01:03:26] I approve this message.
[01:03:27] Thank you Robbie for coming
[01:03:28] and hanging out with us.
[01:03:30] It was so much fun.
[01:03:31] We can't wait for what's next.
[01:03:33] We're so so excited.
[01:03:34] Well, thanks both of you.
[01:03:36] This was so fun.
[01:03:37] I will definitely be back
[01:03:38] and yeah hopefully see you in person
[01:03:40] at some point this year.
[01:03:43] Hopefully yeah.
[01:03:45] I know the whole like
[01:03:46] holiday weekend is throwing me off.
[01:03:48] I'm like I could I drive to LA maybe.
[01:03:52] Oh, yeah.
[01:03:53] I mean that is so ambitious.
[01:03:55] So I would be flattered but zero pressure to do that.
[01:03:59] My gosh that's a lot.
[01:04:01] But we hope you have an amazing tour.
[01:04:03] I know it's a mini one
[01:04:04] but it's going to be fun.
[01:04:05] We'll be following along on socials
[01:04:07] and cheering you on from both coasts.
[01:04:09] Yes.
[01:04:09] Yay sweet.
[01:04:11] Thanks guys.
[01:04:12] All right.
[01:04:13] We'll talk to you soon.
[01:04:15] Bye.
[01:04:16] Bye.
[01:04:17] Freaking love him.
[01:04:19] I was telling the Josh and the twins
[01:04:21] at dinner tonight like that
[01:04:22] we were interviewing Robbie
[01:04:23] and I was like this book made me so sad at time.
[01:04:27] Like there's really like a really sad.
[01:04:29] I was like but Robbie is like sunshine.
[01:04:31] Yes.
[01:04:32] How did sunshine write this?
[01:04:34] It's true.
[01:04:34] It's because he's been hanging out with Silveira.
[01:04:37] That's what one of the twins said.
[01:04:39] She was like yeah,
[01:04:40] that's you know,
[01:04:41] his friends are right.
[01:04:44] It is it's so good.
[01:04:46] And I was like I read the premise.
[01:04:47] I was like,
[01:04:48] oh,
[01:04:48] okay.
[01:04:48] This is going to break me.
[01:04:49] This is this is going to break me.
[01:04:51] You have to read the name.
[01:04:53] Just like the author name.
[01:04:54] Broke it.
[01:04:55] Here we go.
[01:04:56] All right.
[01:04:56] So good.
[01:04:57] Definitely go pick it up.
[01:04:59] It's so good.
[01:05:00] You guys.
[01:05:01] It's so big fans over here.
[01:05:03] Yeah,
[01:05:04] we will always scream about Robbie Couch's books.
[01:05:07] Always forever.
[01:05:08] So yes,
[01:05:09] this is our midseason finale,
[01:05:10] but we do have one announcement for this episode and that is
[01:05:15] we will be having a very special bonus mini episode.
[01:05:21] Next week.
[01:05:22] It's just a little baby.
[01:05:23] It is just just a little baby.
[01:05:26] It is actually an interview with Ka Lindy the author of
[01:05:30] The Ren and the Holly Library among other things.
[01:05:34] We're patreon's you'll notice we're wearing the same clothes.
[01:05:38] Yes.
[01:05:41] Yeah,
[01:05:41] and I'm a lot of my my environment a lot brighter in that
[01:05:45] episode.
[01:05:47] So stay tuned for that that is coming out next week and
[01:05:51] then we are for real Z is taking a break barring anybody
[01:05:55] reaching out to us.
[01:05:56] We will be taking a break.
[01:05:58] I mean if Tata says hey,
[01:05:59] I want to come on the podcast right?
[01:06:01] What do we ever ma'am whenever ma'am are we going
[01:06:05] to morning fine?
[01:06:06] Absolutely.
[01:06:07] Absolutely will not ever say no to her.
[01:06:10] So yeah,
[01:06:11] that is what to expect for next week and then we'll see
[01:06:16] you guys again in August probably.
[01:06:19] Yeah.

[01:06:48] Okay,
[01:06:49] we're doing what we can listen.
[01:06:51] I think I said it earlier today.

[01:07:25] here who will now have some free time to theoretically
[01:07:28] make more merch more merch.
[01:07:31] You could match your dog and it would be the cutest.
[01:07:34] I think me matching my dog is what gave us the idea
[01:07:37] when I got a spark pause hoodie and so did he.
[01:07:39] So yeah,
[01:07:41] oh speaking of dogs if you patreon's notice me
[01:07:45] when we're interviewing Robbie like looking around
[01:07:48] and like giving a stern look it's because and looking
[01:07:50] down it's because I had to text my niece to come
[01:07:53] outside and get my bad bastard hound off of my
[01:07:56] desk and out of the empty bag of chips.
[01:07:59] It was crinkly as she's tromping all over everything
[01:08:04] while I'm trying to interview Robbie couch.
[01:08:06] Oh my goodness.
[01:08:07] That's just a little explanation there speaking
[01:08:09] of dogs wanted to be a part of it.
[01:08:12] She's just a fat ass who wanted to get some chip
[01:08:16] crumbs at some point.
[01:08:18] I don't know if it's visible because I have
[01:08:20] little Asian eyes,
[01:08:21] but my eyes started like focusing elsewhere because
[01:08:25] there was like little like dust bunny just like
[01:08:27] falling right in front of me.
[01:08:29] And I was like,
[01:08:30] please don't get anywhere near my face.

[01:11:42] Be tuned.
[01:11:43] I did order Georgie
[01:11:45] like a couple of winters ago.
[01:11:47] He had a sweatshirt that said searchers
