[00:00:00] You're skipping ahead. Goddammit, I do this every week. Welcome to The Incoherent Fangirl. Where it is our 100th episode, bitches. What? That's wild. Isn't that the craziest thing? We've done this 100 times. Actually, you know what I was thinking about? We've done this 101 times. Because do you remember the one time- One time when it didn't record. That it didn't record and we had to record seven episodes twice. Yes! I was just thinking about that. It was like our second or third episode. It was very early.
[00:00:34] Early on. Before we realized that you could have Zoom auto-record everything. Yeah. And when we had to manually hit the record button. Yeah. I went downstairs to make a cup of tea and you had called me twice, but I had left my phone up here. So I came and got it. And you were like, you left me a voicemail and you're like, Mandy, everything is awful or something like that. It was so terrible. It was awful. It was so traumatizing. Like, oh my gosh. If only
[00:01:04] those two girls could see us now could see us now. Right? My gosh. Just saying. That was when I was still recording in my bed. And we were still recording on Saturdays. That's wild. Yeah. Look at us now. Or Sundays. Look at us now. Anyways, I'm Karen from Rosemont Street. I'm Mandy from Rosemont Street. Hey, neighbor. Hey, neighbor. I was gonna pick something else and I was like, wouldn't it be funny if we both were from here? Yeah.
[00:01:31] Look at that. Look at us go. This is the second time today that we have had like this psychic connection. Third time. If you count this, the most recent one with the double episode recording. That brain cell. On the brain wave.
[00:01:45] That brain cell is really working hard. It's ping ponging around. That's for sure.
[00:01:53] Okay, friends. It's the sad time. In our timeline, it is October 3rd. And in y'all's timeline, it is October 11th. Yay, spooky season.
[00:02:04] Ugh, you make me mad. But it's spooky season. You love it. It is. I'm wearing my fantasy girl fall sweatshirt.
[00:02:10] I love it. I love it.
[00:02:17] This week in fangirling, what'd you do?
[00:02:19] So first, I guess we should recap. I survived the hurricane. I'm fine. My house, my home was fine. We were very fortunate in that we had like minor yard flooding.
[00:02:29] We, for some reason, we stayed in this like pocket of nothing, really. Like, you know how you'll see on like Doppler radars how there will be just like random patches.
[00:02:38] We were in those random patches. And because of the way it shifted, we avoided a lot. We lost power for a few hours. A breaker did trip. We lost a freezer full of food because of it, which I can't, I don't care. Like, I'm not upset.
[00:02:51] Other people lost so much. All of our breathers are okay. All the heartbeats are fine. So we're very fortunate. Always thinking about the people who lost so much more than food. They lost everything and then some.
[00:03:04] So fuck you, Helene. We don't like you. Not a fan.
[00:03:08] So we had, we jokingly in the South call them hurricane parties when you're just like waiting it out.
[00:03:14] So we had our little hurricane party that night just because we were scared to sleep because we didn't know at the time.
[00:03:20] So first I talked Josh into watching Practical Magic with me.
[00:03:23] So I'm just going to give a rundown. I've watched several movies this week. I'll give a quick Sally and Gilly are sisters. Jilly, Gilly. I can't remember now, even though I've watched it a thousand times.
[00:03:31] Born into the Owens family. So the Owens women are cursed. The men they love always die. Very early on, it happens to Sally when her husband is hit by a car.
[00:03:40] Gilly is the more wild, reckless sister. She goes on a road trip and she meets Jimmy. Jimmy is from ER. That's where I know him from.
[00:03:49] Every time I see his face, I'm like, you were on ER. He is really terrible.
[00:03:53] Gilly ends up in an abusive relationship and Jimmy ends up dead.
[00:03:59] So a cop, Gary, comes to town because he's been investigating Jimmy for years and the Owens sisters panic because they're like, oh my God, there's a cop and Sally has children.
[00:04:11] So they try to resurrect old Jimmy and accidentally possess his corpse with an evil spirit.
[00:04:17] So that's fun times.
[00:04:19] You know, you're describing it right now and I swear to God, I thought I had seen Practical Magic several times.
[00:04:27] But why is none of this sounding familiar?
[00:04:29] I don't know.
[00:04:30] This is wild. Like, I feel like I just have to watch it now because...
[00:04:34] You should anyways.
[00:04:35] I mean, you should anyways because it's perfect for spooky season.
[00:04:38] But I'm like starting to wonder if I've ever actually watched it.
[00:04:41] Like, I thought I had.
[00:04:43] I think I own the DVD.
[00:04:45] So it's very weird that I'm like...
[00:04:49] It's a cult classic.
[00:04:51] Yeah.
[00:04:51] Like, I'm sure I love it, but I just have...
[00:04:55] None of this is sounding familiar, which is wild.
[00:04:58] Weird.
[00:04:59] Very wild.
[00:05:00] So Josh kind of fell asleep because he's a boy at the end.
[00:05:03] But I'm just kind of watching the weather on my phone, trying to be mindful.
[00:05:07] And so it autoplays another movie, Death Becomes Her.
[00:05:11] Okay.
[00:05:11] And I'd never seen Death Becomes Her.
[00:05:13] So it's Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Bruce Willis.
[00:05:15] I think it came out in 1989.
[00:05:16] I think it was the year we were born.
[00:05:19] Like, truly.
[00:05:20] It was either like 1989, 1990, something around there.
[00:05:23] Right.
[00:05:23] So I don't remember their names, so I'm just going to use the actor's name.
[00:05:26] Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis are engaged.
[00:05:28] And she takes him to her friend Meryl Streep's variety show.
[00:05:32] Because Meryl Streep is like Sabrina Carpenter.
[00:05:34] Okay.
[00:05:35] And she's like, every boyfriend I've ever had has left me for her.
[00:05:39] So I'm bringing you now because I can't marry you and then lose you to her.
[00:05:43] So the next scene is the wedding of Bruce Willis and Meryl Streep.
[00:05:48] So this understandably, honestly, sends Goldie Hawn into a freaking mental break.
[00:05:54] Yeah.
[00:05:54] And she ends up in a psychiatric hospital.
[00:05:57] Years later, she returns looking 30 years younger than she is.
[00:06:01] Radiant.
[00:06:02] She's got a bestselling book about being youthful.
[00:06:05] And she's like 50, I think.
[00:06:06] And so she invites Bruce Willis and Meryl Streep to like her launch event for this book.
[00:06:11] And of course, being a shitty man, Bruce Willis immediately is interested in her again as soon
[00:06:17] as he sees her.
[00:06:17] Because not surprisingly, his and Meryl Streep's relationship is trash.
[00:06:22] Because like her looks fade over the years.
[00:06:25] Right.
[00:06:25] Was Sabrina Carpenter.
[00:06:27] But when Sabrina Carpenter's 50, she's gonna look like she's 50.
[00:06:31] Right.
[00:06:31] That's just natural.
[00:06:32] So Meryl is a star.
[00:06:34] She's obsessed with her looks.
[00:06:35] And she's got to find out what Goldie's secret is.
[00:06:37] And she ends up finding out that it's a mystery drug that she can take.
[00:06:41] Like she's offered the same drug.
[00:06:43] And the stipulations are that after 10 years, you have to disappear from public life.
[00:06:47] You can fake your own death.
[00:06:48] You can retire.
[00:06:49] You can't be seen publicly again.
[00:06:51] And you have to take pristine care of yourself.
[00:06:54] Notable clients of this drug are Elvis, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe.
[00:06:59] They show them all.
[00:07:00] Okay.
[00:07:01] At this big party.
[00:07:02] So Meryl takes the drug, instantly sheds 30 years in like minutes.
[00:07:06] And goes home to pick a fight with Bruce.
[00:07:09] Well, at the same time, Bruce and Goldie are plotting Meryl's murder.
[00:07:13] Oh.
[00:07:13] Because he's like, I want to be with you.
[00:07:15] You've always been my heart.
[00:07:18] Ah.
[00:07:18] I just made that one mistake.
[00:07:20] But I've thought of you all these years.
[00:07:22] You know how it goes.
[00:07:23] Right.
[00:07:24] So Meryl gets home and he's like, what?
[00:07:26] Why do you?
[00:07:26] How do you look like this?
[00:07:27] What's going on?
[00:07:28] She ends up getting pushed down the stairs.
[00:07:29] And like, it's obvious that she's dead.
[00:07:31] It's very 1989 CGI.
[00:07:34] So like I could handle it.
[00:07:36] But like her neck is hanging down her back and her limbs are just everywhere.
[00:07:40] She's dead.
[00:07:42] Bruce calls Goldie to tell her.
[00:07:43] He's like, hey, we don't even have to worry about killing her because she just fell down
[00:07:47] the stairs.
[00:07:48] And Meryl in the background is getting up because the drug kills you and makes you an immortal
[00:07:52] corpse.
[00:07:53] Oh.
[00:07:54] So things happen.
[00:07:55] Neither woman takes the best care of their bodies.
[00:07:57] And so like and starts graying, peeling off.
[00:08:00] And you can see underneath it.
[00:08:01] They're gray.
[00:08:02] It's spooky, but it's hilarious.
[00:08:04] Like, I'm so glad I sat up and watched it because it was funny.
[00:08:08] And like, honestly, that if that was 35 years ago, Meryl Streep doesn't age.
[00:08:12] Like, I think she might have taken the drug.
[00:08:14] Goldie Hawns do.
[00:08:14] Like, they don't age.
[00:08:16] They haven't aged.
[00:08:16] So then the next night we watched The Craft.
[00:08:19] So Sarah moves to LA since she's a teenager.
[00:08:22] She's immediately shunned by a group of three wannabe witches until one of them sees her
[00:08:26] practicing telekinesis.
[00:08:27] And then they're like, wait a second.
[00:08:29] She's the fourth that we need to actually get powers and be powerful and blah, blah, blah.
[00:08:34] So then she's immediately invited into their coven.
[00:08:36] She goes on a date with her crush, Chris.
[00:08:38] And afterwards, he lies and tells everyone they had sex.
[00:08:41] Men.
[00:08:42] Break you, Chris.
[00:08:42] Chris was all rich too, which really hurt my feelings because I love that man.
[00:08:47] I've loved that man since, what, 1997 when Scream came out.
[00:08:52] Sarah casts a love spell on him and he becomes violently obsessed with her.
[00:08:55] Rochelle is a black student who's a victim of racism.
[00:08:58] She casts a spell on her bully who starts losing her hair.
[00:09:01] Bonnie has a terrible scar from a really bad car accident.
[00:09:05] She casts a spell of beauty and her scars disappear.
[00:09:08] And Nancy casts a power spell and her shitty stepfather has a fatal heart attack.
[00:09:13] But all of this power goes to Nancy's head.
[00:09:16] Chaos ensues.
[00:09:17] And it's like dangerous chaos.
[00:09:20] Oh boy.
[00:09:20] Still like a teen movie, you know.
[00:09:23] But yeah, Nancy was dangerous.
[00:09:26] Okay.
[00:09:26] Then I watched Pride and Prejudice, the 2005 cinematic masterpiece.
[00:09:31] The original enemies to lovers.
[00:09:32] Mr. Darcy comes to town.
[00:09:34] He immediately calls Elizabeth Bennett not handsome enough to tempt him, not realizing he's within her earshot.
[00:09:39] One sister's in love with his best friend Bingley, but she's really shy and doesn't know how to display her emotions.
[00:09:45] So Darcy talks Bingley out of proposing to her because he's like, she doesn't really like you.
[00:09:50] She's just not that into you.
[00:09:52] Elizabeth hates him for that.
[00:09:53] Things happen.
[00:09:54] Darcy proposes and Elizabeth is like, girl, I'm a laugh in your face.
[00:09:58] Do you know what you did to my sister?
[00:10:01] Like my favorite person in the world is my sister and you just ruined like her being in love.
[00:10:06] Anyways, Bingley returns.
[00:10:08] Darcy fixes a lot of things he didn't break.
[00:10:12] Does things he didn't have to do.
[00:10:13] They realize they're in love.
[00:10:15] The hand flex, the chest hair, the cape billowing in the freaking morning field.
[00:10:22] What could be better?
[00:10:25] It did make me wonder, and I posted on this on threads, why we don't have a romanticy retelling of Pride and Prejudice with Wyverns and political intrigue and magic and Fitzwilliam Darcy's Shadow Daddy.
[00:10:35] But I got a lot of good recommendations that I'll have to fill you guys in on.
[00:10:39] I got a report back because some people have done something that I needed.
[00:10:45] I'm still working on Angels and Exorcists.
[00:10:48] I've got a lot this week.
[00:10:49] I'm sorry.
[00:10:49] All my movies.
[00:10:50] We talked about it last week.
[00:10:51] Miriam is demon kissed, lives with her godfather, Zach.
[00:10:54] Peter moves in next door and he is cute.
[00:10:56] They have a semi-awkward meet cute where a stray demon comes in to the bar while Miriam's band is playing.
[00:11:03] Accosts her in the fray.
[00:11:04] Peter is knocked over.
[00:11:06] She's like, let me help you up.
[00:11:08] What's going on?
[00:11:08] Well, then he has to leave really fast because his mom is there to give him his sister's bag.
[00:11:13] So give him her bag who he finds has snuck out to ghost hunt in a haunted hospital that's abandoned.
[00:11:19] And when she comes home, she brings a demon duke of hell along.
[00:11:22] So that's a great idea.
[00:11:24] Miriam is demon kissed and maybe the one thing that this duke is looking for, like could she be a key to unlock hell for him?
[00:11:30] We'll see.
[00:11:31] I haven't finished quite yet.
[00:11:32] We have been really busy.
[00:11:33] So I normally clean on weekends.
[00:11:36] And so I finally did a deep clean of my house.
[00:11:38] And while I did, I listened to an audio book that I think you've read, but I think it's been a few years.
[00:11:43] So I'm going to retell the listeners.
[00:11:45] It's This Vicious Grace by Emily Thied.
[00:11:48] Yes.
[00:11:48] So it's very similar to if from Blood and Ash and Shatter Me had a baby.
[00:11:53] So Alessa is blessed to be the first Finestra.
[00:11:56] She's a powerful God-chosen protector of Severio from a horde of demons coming to destroy the island and everyone on it.
[00:12:03] Her power is to magnify her partner or her Fonte's power.
[00:12:06] But unfortunately for everybody, Alessa's skin is deadly and she's married and killed three Fonte's so far.
[00:12:12] There's an assassination attempt on her life.
[00:12:14] So Alessa goes to the seedy underbelly of Severio because she's like, my guards obviously aren't protecting me and they are being paid by someone else.
[00:12:22] She finds and hires Dante as her personal bodyguard.
[00:12:25] So Dante is a trained fighter.
[00:12:26] He has his own secrets.
[00:12:28] It's a romanticy.
[00:12:29] You can imagine where that leads.
[00:12:31] I have the sequel, This Curse Light on Libby.
[00:12:34] I've just got to get to it because this Vicious Grace ended on a cliffhanger that I'd like to see what's happening with everybody.
[00:12:40] I never finished that series.
[00:12:42] Not because I didn't want to, but like I finished the first book and then I was waiting for the second book for too long.
[00:12:48] Yeah.
[00:12:49] And so now I'm like, wait, I might have to start over.
[00:12:52] Yeah.
[00:12:54] It was just, it was a good one for cleaning bathrooms.
[00:12:58] I was vacuuming, you know, I was doing all of the stuff around the house and it was like, it got me through that.
[00:13:03] Then it's a new month, new Libra.fm ALCs.
[00:13:07] So the first one I'm going to list or I'm in the middle of now is If I Stopped Haunting You by Colby Wilkins.
[00:13:12] So we have Penelope Skinner.
[00:13:14] She may have thrown a book at Neil Storm at his head.
[00:13:16] She probably had a good reason.
[00:13:17] In her defense, he deserved it.
[00:13:19] She's pretty sure.
[00:13:20] So she's a debut author and he is a best-selling horror author.
[00:13:24] They're on a panel together and Penelope can't stand another minute of hearing Neil talk.
[00:13:30] He's talking about his novels and how he claims that they break these native stereotypes.
[00:13:35] When in her opinion, they're written for basically for the white gaze.
[00:13:40] They're written to pander to woke white women's palates and not actually breaking any stereotypes.
[00:13:45] They're very rounded at the edges and not sharp like he thinks they are.
[00:13:50] Penelope is biracial.
[00:13:51] She's part indigenous and part white and feels like she isn't taken seriously as an author because of that, because of being a woman.
[00:13:57] Where Neil, who's an indigenous man, is.
[00:13:59] She knows her writing is better than his.
[00:14:02] Why does he keep getting publishing deals?
[00:14:03] And she's overlooked.
[00:14:04] So they have like a little back and forth where she kind of calls him out publicly in front of everybody at this panel.
[00:14:10] She goes to leave and he says one more thing and she just hauls off and throws that book at his face.
[00:14:16] And she hits him too.
[00:14:18] Get it, girl.
[00:14:19] She's, of course, immediately removed from the event and becomes like a pariah in the publishing world.
[00:14:24] Nobody really wants to do anything with her.
[00:14:26] So a few months later, Penelope's friend invites her on a writing retreat at a castle in Scotland.
[00:14:31] Like who's saying no to that?
[00:14:33] Yeah.
[00:14:33] Who's saying no to that?
[00:14:34] Right.
[00:14:34] She probably should have because Neil shows up.
[00:14:38] Unbeknownst to Penelope, Neil hasn't been able to write a word since their altercation.
[00:14:43] Since her verbal lashing, it kind of like broke something in him.
[00:14:47] There are things about his book.
[00:14:49] No, because there are things about his book that Penelope doesn't know.
[00:14:51] Editing and publicists and publishing houses all had a say in first draft and what's on the shelf.
[00:14:58] Now the retreat has started and they've both agreed neither is going on.
[00:15:02] Like I'm not leaving because of you.
[00:15:04] Although they wish they could once they realize that they're stuck in a real life haunted house.
[00:15:08] Real life ghost story.
[00:15:10] Mega haunted castle.
[00:15:11] 300 miles to the nearest hospital.
[00:15:13] Like they're in the middle of nowhere and they're already noticing how hot each other is.
[00:15:17] Of course.
[00:15:18] But what if the other, like what if they're each not as awful as the other thought?
[00:15:22] Right.
[00:15:23] Ew.
[00:15:23] Right.
[00:15:24] So I've started A Captured Cauldron by R.K. Ashwick.
[00:15:27] More on that later.
[00:15:27] And then I just have one more quick thing.
[00:15:29] I went on my niece's field trip to a produce stand farm yesterday.
[00:15:34] And I have to tell about this because of a thing she told me.
[00:15:38] Okay.
[00:15:38] So my brother-in-law was supposed to go.
[00:15:40] He had to back out.
[00:15:41] Mimi went in his place.
[00:15:42] There was easily 100 kindergartners.
[00:15:44] It wasn't as like as chaotic as I thought it was going to be, but it was very cute.
[00:15:48] But my one-year-old nephew was straight up not having a good time.
[00:15:51] Like he wasn't fussy.
[00:15:52] He was just completely uninterested in anything.
[00:15:55] So there was this little, like, it was kind of like a hayride on a wagon through this little area that has like cows and goats and donkeys and mini horses and stuff.
[00:16:04] I saw a little Sebastian.
[00:16:05] But as we're walking to it, my sister had my nephew in this big like wagon stroller thing.
[00:16:10] So she couldn't go on this.
[00:16:11] She stayed back.
[00:16:12] So my niece like takes my hand and we're walking and she says, that's that boy who always stares at me and smiles.
[00:16:17] Don't say anything.
[00:16:19] And so I was like, I won't.
[00:16:21] But I like I asked her, I was like, why do you think he's like, why do you think he's staring at you and smiling at you?
[00:16:26] And she just goes, maybe he's in love with me.
[00:16:28] I love her.
[00:16:30] I was like, I mean, maybe you're beautiful and you're smart.
[00:16:34] And then I'm saying all this stuff.
[00:16:35] And she was like, I don't want anybody to be in love with me.
[00:16:39] And I was like, all right.
[00:16:40] I was like, well, we have this.
[00:16:42] I don't know where it started.
[00:16:43] I can't remember where it started.
[00:16:44] But we always ask her who's her love of life because it changes every day.
[00:16:47] And so I was like, who's your love of life?
[00:16:49] Mimi, as it should be.
[00:16:52] Don't you worry about these boys staring at you, smiling at you.
[00:16:54] If you don't want them to growl at them, hiss, start barking, whatever you want to do.
[00:16:59] Mimi's your love of life.
[00:17:00] And I'll stay that way.
[00:17:03] But I had to tell them, maybe he's in love with me.
[00:17:06] Thank God.
[00:17:09] I love her so much.
[00:17:10] My girl.
[00:17:11] She's so funny.
[00:17:12] I love her so much.
[00:17:13] All right.
[00:17:14] That was my long winded week.
[00:17:16] All right.
[00:17:16] Well, I've got probably just as much, but I have notes.
[00:17:21] So hopefully this will go quickly.
[00:17:22] Who knows?
[00:17:23] Okay.
[00:17:23] So I finished Sing Me to Sleep by Gabby Burden.
[00:17:26] I actually restarted it because I was so tired when I started it originally
[00:17:29] that I couldn't remember anything.
[00:17:31] Yeah.
[00:17:32] So Sing Me to Sleep by Gabby Burden.
[00:17:33] Saoirse Sarkova is the top trainee in her class and thus gets the honor of being
[00:17:38] one of Prince Hayes' royal bodyguards upon graduation.
[00:17:42] She turns it down, but then a blackmailer threatens her little sister and she decides
[00:17:46] to accept the position, much to the delight of Hayes, who is infatuated with her from the
[00:17:52] get-go.
[00:17:53] While Saoirse is trying to find her blackmailer, Hayes and his guard, including Saoirse, are
[00:17:58] trying to find a serial killer in the kingdom.
[00:18:01] The problem is Saoirse is the killer that they're looking for.
[00:18:04] Oh, I love it.
[00:18:05] She is a siren and the royal family does not like sirens.
[00:18:10] They think that they have eliminated all sirens in their kingdom.
[00:18:14] I remember you talking about this.
[00:18:15] Yeah, and so she has been in hiding for many, many years.
[00:18:19] And so, you know, things happen.
[00:18:21] This is book one of a duology, so it does kind of end on a cliffhanger, but it is a full
[00:18:26] cast of black and brown characters.
[00:18:28] There are twists and turns at every corner and a forbidden romance, which may or may not
[00:18:33] be the main reason I return for book two.
[00:18:35] I mean, you can imagine.
[00:18:37] I read The Situation Ship by Abby Jimenez.
[00:18:39] This was the short story that was previously only available in the Target exclusive edition
[00:18:45] of Just for the Summer.
[00:18:46] It follows Maddie and Doug.
[00:18:48] Maddie is the best friend from Just for the Summer.
[00:18:50] Doug is the best friend from Part of Your World, and it is them meeting.
[00:18:55] She is a travel nurse who isn't ready to settle down, and Doug is the greenest of walking
[00:19:00] green flags.
[00:19:01] Love that man so much.
[00:19:02] It's a really quick, cute, short story about how they meet, and you can kind of see the
[00:19:07] beginning of what their relationship will be, and spoiler alert, what it ends up being in
[00:19:13] the end of Just for the Summer.
[00:19:14] So it's super quick, super cute.
[00:19:16] Double Pucked by Lauren Blakely.
[00:19:18] When Trina finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her, she tricks him into leaving
[00:19:22] their shared apartment under the guise of, I need to take some time, I need to think about
[00:19:28] this, we can get through this, kind of like placating him because he's like, oh, it was
[00:19:33] just one mistake, I'm so sorry, blah, blah, blah.
[00:19:36] You know how it can be.
[00:19:38] And so she gets him out of the apartment, but she uses that time to pack up all of her things
[00:19:42] and grab the most important thing to her, the thing that she loves the most in the world,
[00:19:49] her adorable little tripod puppy.
[00:19:51] Of course.
[00:19:52] Of course, as one does.
[00:19:53] But on the way out, she also swipes the thing that her ex loves the most, which are his VIP
[00:20:00] tickets to a hockey game that includes a meet and greet with the star players of the two
[00:20:06] opposing teams that are playing, Chase and Riker, who also happen to be childhood best friends.
[00:20:11] So Trina uses these tickets and goes to this game and does the meet and greet.
[00:20:16] And it turns out to be quite the VIP experience because she finds herself in bed at the end
[00:20:22] of the night with both of them.
[00:20:25] Great, you say?
[00:20:27] Yeah.
[00:20:27] And for romance reasons, Trina and Riker end up moving into Chase's house for the week.
[00:20:33] And as you can expect, things happen.
[00:20:36] Trina ends up having to pretend to be Chase's date to his cousin's wedding because his cousin
[00:20:42] keeps trying to hook him up with people.
[00:20:45] Meanwhile, she's working behind the scenes to kind of rehab Riker's grumpy image.
[00:20:51] Like, he is not very popular with the general public.
[00:20:57] So she's like behind the scenes like, well, what if we did this and you just took pictures?
[00:21:01] I take pictures and we'll post it to social media.
[00:21:03] Like, you're already doing these things.
[00:21:05] Like, you're buying books from a local indie bookstore to donate to the library.
[00:21:09] Like, why not just take pictures of that and post it?
[00:21:12] Like, you're not doing these things for your image.
[00:21:14] You're actually just doing them for yourself.
[00:21:17] But if it helps your image, let's do that.
[00:21:19] Why not?
[00:21:20] And so romance things happen.
[00:21:22] Angels and Exorcist by Finley Ray.
[00:21:24] We have talked about this.
[00:21:25] You just talked about that.
[00:21:26] I finished it.
[00:21:27] It was lovely.
[00:21:28] I need book two immediately.
[00:21:30] The Game Changer by Lana Ferguson.
[00:21:31] You've got Delilah Baker, who is the darling of a local cable network with her own show.
[00:21:36] Ian Chase, who is dealing with a public breakup PR nightmare.
[00:21:40] They have been friends since childhood.
[00:21:42] He was her first crush.
[00:21:43] She is also her brother's best friend.
[00:21:45] Their respective teams decide that they can help each other out.
[00:21:49] Delilah will rehab Ian's kind of bad boy image because of this very public breakup.
[00:21:55] While Ian will bring the hockey fans to Delilah's viewership and thus making it worthwhile for everybody involved and romance things happen.
[00:22:03] I'm going so quickly.
[00:22:05] I'm so proud of myself.
[00:22:07] Okay.
[00:22:08] Finley Donovan Jumps the Gun by El Casamona.
[00:22:10] It is book three of the Finley Donovan series.
[00:22:13] Finley is a single mom and an author who was accidentally mistaken for a hit woman in book one.
[00:22:20] And things have kind of spiraled since then.
[00:22:22] This is book three.
[00:22:23] This book has her and her partner in like accidental crime Vero.
[00:22:27] Attending a civilian police training academy for the week.
[00:22:31] While dealing with mob boss Felix.
[00:22:34] Who is breathing down their necks about finding their competition.
[00:22:38] A.K.A. an actual contract healer.
[00:22:41] Meanwhile Finley has revisions due for her latest book and she has writer's block galore.
[00:22:47] She has an ex-husband who wants her back and is doing what he can to make that happen.
[00:22:53] And she's not about that.
[00:22:54] And then there's also the hot cop that she can't stop thinking about.
[00:22:58] Things happen.
[00:22:59] It's great.
[00:23:00] And then Veronica Ruiz Breaks the Bank also by El Casamano is a novella in that same series which follows Vero.
[00:23:08] Veronica Ruiz who is Finley's partner in crime.
[00:23:10] And how she kind of ended up becoming a part of Finley's life.
[00:23:14] With also a little sneak peek as to the relationship of Vero and Javier.
[00:23:20] Who does show up in book three.
[00:23:22] Which I that that better get developed more because there's so much tension there.
[00:23:29] George Mabley is very very into this.
[00:23:31] So first you said there was a tripod puppy and he came up.
[00:23:34] Because he was like y'all don't love him more than me do you?
[00:23:36] But then the dogs barked downstairs.
[00:23:38] And it woke him up.
[00:23:39] It's okay.
[00:23:40] It's okay buddy.
[00:23:41] Okay.
[00:23:42] Okay bye.
[00:23:43] A Captured Cauldron by R.K.
[00:23:45] Ashwick.
[00:23:45] More on that in a moment.
[00:23:47] And finally An Ember in the Ashes by Sabatier.
[00:23:50] You've got Laya's brother who gets taken by the kingdom.
[00:23:54] He's arrested for treason.
[00:23:56] And she finds herself looking for the resistance in order to get them to help her get him out.
[00:24:03] And to save his life essentially.
[00:24:04] Meanwhile the resistance is like well if we're gonna do this for you you gotta do something for us.
[00:24:09] So they sent her undercover as a slave for the commandant.
[00:24:13] And so the commandant is like I want to say kind of like the general of everything.
[00:24:20] All the army people.
[00:24:22] So who is also Elias's mother.
[00:24:24] Now Elias is a soldier for the kingdom.
[00:24:27] But all he wants to do is desert.
[00:24:30] He wants to leave.
[00:24:31] He wants to have his freedom.
[00:24:32] He does not want to be there.
[00:24:33] He is not enjoying himself.
[00:24:35] That is all he wants.
[00:24:36] And he is on his way to leave when an auger.
[00:24:41] Which is kind of like their immortal seer kind of type people.
[00:24:46] Named Cain stops him.
[00:24:48] And he tells him hey you'll actually get true freedom if you stay.
[00:24:52] And so Elias is like not sure about that but he ends up staying.
[00:24:57] Turns out Elias has been chosen as one of the four competitors in this tournament to find the next emperor of the kingdom.
[00:25:06] And it is real bad because he's going up against his best friend.
[00:25:13] His very best friend since childhood.
[00:25:14] As well as like their like mortal enemies who have been giving them hell for years.
[00:25:21] And so that's that's a fun time.
[00:25:23] And Elias is like how is this is going to get me freedom.
[00:25:26] But Cain's just like trust the process.
[00:25:28] And he's like I don't know about this.
[00:25:30] Anyways all of this is happening while Elias is working as a slave.
[00:25:34] And trying to like glean secrets by like sneaking around.
[00:25:38] And all of that stuff within the commandant circle.
[00:25:41] To help the resistance help her get her brother out.
[00:25:45] But nothing is quite as it seems.
[00:25:47] There are people who know secrets that they shouldn't know.
[00:25:50] There are people who are providing secrets that they shouldn't be providing.
[00:25:54] There are people doing things that they shouldn't be doing.
[00:25:56] And it's just chaos.
[00:25:58] And it's just like oh my god.
[00:26:01] Oh my god.
[00:26:02] This is book one of four.
[00:26:04] So I'm very stressed out.
[00:26:06] It is and this is the same universe that Sabah Tahir's latest book Air is set in the same universe.
[00:26:13] I have the audio book for that.
[00:26:14] It's like a spin-off series.
[00:26:16] And since I will be meeting her next week.
[00:26:20] I was like I should probably read the series.
[00:26:23] It's been on my list forever.
[00:26:25] So here we are.
[00:26:26] And that was my week.
[00:26:28] Look I did it.
[00:26:29] Oh and busy weeks.
[00:26:30] Agatha all along.
[00:26:32] I didn't watch it yet so you can't talk about it.
[00:26:35] Sorry.
[00:26:36] I'm dying because.
[00:26:37] Out of all the things I did watch.
[00:26:39] We didn't watch Agatha.
[00:26:40] Episode four.
[00:26:43] Okay.
[00:26:44] Anyways.
[00:26:44] That was my week.
[00:26:50] Do you have a fictional boyfriend this week?
[00:26:52] I picked a fictional couple.
[00:26:54] I picked Doug and Maddie from The Situationship.
[00:26:56] Like I said Doug is the greenest of green flags.
[00:26:59] I love this man so much.
[00:27:01] He is like so awkward when you meet him in part of your world.
[00:27:06] But then as you like learn about him as a person it's just like I love this man.
[00:27:11] He's so sweet.
[00:27:12] And he's like he's a veteran.
[00:27:13] So he was in I want to say army but maybe navy.
[00:27:19] I don't remember.
[00:27:20] But he was a medic.
[00:27:20] And so he has PTSD from that.
[00:27:23] And so he just kind of lives on a farm and has like multiple side hustles.
[00:27:28] He's got a pig named Kevin Bacon who is like the town pig and just wanders around.
[00:27:33] And he's got his like little Venmo QR code.
[00:27:35] Like you can send money if you want to take a picture with Kevin Bacon or whatever.
[00:27:39] And then he has like a petting zoo.
[00:27:42] And he makes jams and just has all these multiple side hustles just because he's like I just need to keep busy.
[00:27:49] Otherwise my head is very loud.
[00:27:51] And Maddie is like she's a travel nurse so she gets it.
[00:27:54] And she's like okay this guy is like really cool.
[00:27:57] And also when they meet she is currently like walking through the woods and finding little like penis drawings everywhere.
[00:28:04] And just like following the penises.
[00:28:06] And he finds her he's like have you seen penis rock?
[00:28:08] And she's like excuse me?
[00:28:10] No I'm not.
[00:28:11] But now I haven't lived.
[00:28:12] Now let's do this.
[00:28:14] And it's adorable.
[00:28:16] I love them.
[00:28:17] They're so cute.
[00:28:19] So that's my fictional couple of the week.
[00:28:22] What about you?
[00:28:24] If I didn't say Fitzwilliam Darcy I would sue myself.
[00:28:28] I've been obsessed with him since I was in high school.
[00:28:30] I named my first MacBook Fitzwilliam.
[00:28:32] And I actually had a dude stalk my Facebook and pretend to be really into Pride and Prejudice to try and talk to me.
[00:28:39] He was like he changed his like something on his social media to be like just a Mr. Darcy looking for his Elizabeth.
[00:28:46] And like it was very creepy.
[00:28:48] Oh my god.
[00:28:49] Like multiple friends saw this dude showing up on like commenting on stuff on mine.
[00:28:54] And like they didn't know each other but they knew him.
[00:28:56] So many of them were like hey girl block that person right now that's a psychopath.
[00:29:01] I know this person.
[00:29:02] They suck.
[00:29:02] But yeah tried to use Mr. Darcy to get to me.
[00:29:04] How dare.
[00:29:05] How dare.
[00:29:06] But he's our original like he doesn't change for her.
[00:29:09] He changes because she points things out to him about himself that are not good.
[00:29:13] Right.
[00:29:14] And he reflects and is like you know what?
[00:29:16] Wow.
[00:29:17] You're right.
[00:29:17] I was.
[00:29:18] You're right.
[00:29:18] I've got to reflect.
[00:29:19] I've got to learn.
[00:29:20] I've got to grow.
[00:29:21] I'll be back girl.
[00:29:22] And he comes back in the billowing cloak with the chest hair.
[00:29:27] Good god.
[00:29:27] And then Dante from This Vicious Grace.
[00:29:30] We love a grumpy but sweet protective king.
[00:29:32] Yes.
[00:29:33] Yes.
[00:29:33] I love him.
[00:29:34] Yes.
[00:29:34] He's a baby angel.
[00:29:35] Yes.
[00:29:35] I think I remember choosing him previously.
[00:29:38] Yeah.
[00:29:38] Yeah.
[00:29:39] He's got a little bit of a backstory too.
[00:29:41] Yeah.
[00:29:41] That's like oh my heart.
[00:29:42] I like vaguely remember like as you're talking about like I vaguely remember these things
[00:29:46] and I'm like yeah.
[00:29:47] Yeah.
[00:29:47] I can feel it.
[00:29:48] See that's how he's imprinted on my heart because I remember that I love him.
[00:29:53] So that's how good he is.
[00:29:55] Sweet baby angel.
[00:29:57] That sound means we have an intruder alert.
[00:30:04] It's our hundredth episode intruder.
[00:30:07] This is so exciting.
[00:30:08] This is our hundredth episode.
[00:30:10] I feel very special.
[00:30:12] You are.
[00:30:13] You are.
[00:30:13] You are.
[00:30:14] This is our hundredth episode.
[00:30:16] This is your third time here.
[00:30:18] This is so exciting y'all.
[00:30:20] We have RK Ashwick back.
[00:30:22] We're going to talk about A Captured Cauldron which is book two of the SideQuest Row series.
[00:30:28] Words are hard.
[00:30:30] We get to go back to Rosemond Street.
[00:30:33] We're so excited.
[00:30:34] Yay.
[00:30:35] Okay.
[00:30:35] So as you know we like to start off giving our listeners kind of the elevator pitch
[00:30:40] of the book.
[00:30:41] So can you do that for us right now?
[00:30:42] Yes.
[00:30:43] So this is the sequel to Arrival Most Vile.
[00:30:46] In Arrival Most Vile Ambrose and Eli were rival potioneers so they owned potion shops
[00:30:51] directly across the street from each other.
[00:30:52] They ended up having to work together on a joint commission and ended up, spoiler alert,
[00:30:56] falling in love in the process.
[00:30:58] It is a romance novel.
[00:30:59] Yes.
[00:30:59] So in Captured Cauldron, it is almost a year after generally those events.
[00:31:05] Potion Con has come to town.
[00:31:06] It is a convention for all things potioneering.
[00:31:09] It is Ambrose's favorite event of the year.
[00:31:12] That's coming into town kind of right as people are a little bit worried about crime
[00:31:16] upticks from these underground crime rings because of the city.
[00:31:19] And of course there's a CD underbelly of the city.
[00:31:21] And this is part of the blurb, so I'm not spoiling anything, is Ambrose gets kidnapped
[00:31:27] at Potion Con, the very place he was like, I'm going to be fine, guys.
[00:31:31] Kidnapped by an underground crime ring who wants him to make this impossible potion.
[00:31:36] So you've got Ambrose underground trying to figure out how to get himself out of there.
[00:31:41] You've got Eli and Rosamund Street going on a potioneer heist rescue.
[00:31:46] And then you've also got, this is new for book two, you've got Dawn as a third POV who
[00:31:51] gets a romance subplot of her own.
[00:31:53] Yay!
[00:31:54] I love it so much.
[00:31:55] So I freaking love Potion Con, okay?
[00:31:57] Like, I love this idea.
[00:31:59] I think it's going to be so relatable to readers.
[00:32:02] What cons did you, like, go to for inspiration?
[00:32:04] And, like, do you have a favorite convention that you've gone to?
[00:32:07] I've never been to a con.
[00:32:09] Really?
[00:32:10] Oh, sorry.
[00:32:11] You do it, but you write it so well.
[00:32:13] You do it so well that I was convinced you were at Con.
[00:32:15] Yeah.
[00:32:16] You're on it every weekend.
[00:32:16] Right.
[00:32:17] No, and I even cosplay too.
[00:32:19] I just, I don't have any, I don't have a lot of friends who do, like, con circuits.
[00:32:23] And so I was never like, oh, just come with us and you'll, like, see how it is.
[00:32:27] And by the time I'd really heard of, like, San Diego Comic Con, which I'm pretty close
[00:32:31] to, it had already gotten so big.
[00:32:33] Like, so stupid big.
[00:32:34] Yeah.
[00:32:34] And so, yeah, I just have not, I've never been to a con.
[00:32:38] I'm so sorry.
[00:32:45] Who knows the concert.
[00:32:46] What it's like at con.
[00:32:47] Yeah.
[00:32:48] Because I've been to several and you, like, are spot on.
[00:32:51] Yeah.
[00:32:51] I'm so glad.
[00:32:53] Yeah.
[00:32:54] And you also do it in a space, in, like, it's a very different space.
[00:32:57] Like, they're in, like, what is it, caverns or, like, they're.
[00:33:01] It's like a big sinkhole that they've turned into, like, an event arena.
[00:33:04] And so they've kind of, like, built walls and built, like, you know, what is that?
[00:33:09] Hall H for, like, SBCC.
[00:33:12] And they, yeah, they have, like, an artist alley.
[00:33:14] Artist alley.
[00:33:15] Yeah.
[00:33:16] You, like, you nailed it.
[00:33:18] Absolutely.
[00:33:19] Like, it is.
[00:33:19] I am flabbergasted.
[00:33:21] Yeah.
[00:33:21] Yeah.
[00:33:22] I am absolutely shocked because you nailed the con experience.
[00:33:27] The vibe.
[00:33:27] Yeah.
[00:33:28] I'm glad.
[00:33:29] Good.
[00:33:29] I love Potion Con.
[00:33:31] I wish I could just write the whole book about him just going to different things in Potion Con.
[00:33:35] But there wouldn't be a plot.
[00:33:37] And I felt that even though it's a cozy fantasy, readers would eventually want to plot.
[00:33:42] Want to do something, I guess.
[00:33:45] Yeah.
[00:33:45] So this one, it is a cozy fantasy, but this one is a little bit more, like, action-packed than the last one.
[00:33:53] A little bit.
[00:33:53] Yeah.
[00:33:53] Because you've got, I mean, you've got a kidnapping.
[00:33:56] You've got a, we've got a, we've got a heist him out kind of thing.
[00:34:00] So it was kind of the idea to, to, for this, this plot line of Ambrose getting kidnapped.
[00:34:07] I was telling a friend a couple of weeks ago that I was inspired, a while ago, I was inspired by a Tumblr post that talked about a mad, or like mad scientist kidnapped by villains to make a ray gun or, you know, a death ray, a freeze ray.
[00:34:20] And they were like, why don't they just make like a ray gun that shoots confetti?
[00:34:23] Because the villain doesn't know anything about science.
[00:34:25] So the villain doesn't know what they're doing.
[00:34:26] And so why don't they just pull a fast one on the villain?
[00:34:28] And then I was like, oh, what would Ambrose do in that scenario?
[00:34:31] Wait, what would Ambrose do in that scenario?
[00:34:33] Yeah.
[00:34:34] And then I just went from there.
[00:34:35] And yeah, it did take some finessing just to make sure that they kidnapped, there was real stakes to the kidnapping, but we didn't dwell on them.
[00:34:42] And so we're focused on, we're focused on other things in the book that are lighter and more like heartfelt.
[00:34:48] Like Ambrose's ally that he makes underground, Ambrose and Nat.
[00:34:52] That is a very cute, like mentor-mentee relationship that we focus on a lot in his chapters.
[00:34:57] And Eli, you know, Eli and Rosamund Street, they're very much playing into their strengths when it comes to using magic devices to help out Ambrose and try to rescue him.
[00:35:06] And Eli is playing into his adventurer training that he has started since the events of this book.
[00:35:11] And so, yeah, we're still trying to kind of keep it grounded in the world with the, you know, the cozy characters and not keep it.
[00:35:18] It's, it's not, I made kidnapping cozy.
[00:35:22] Yeah, you kind of did.
[00:35:24] It's the most Ambrose thing in the world to me that he would be the one to get kidnapped after he's got such disdain for like the people who are hiring bodyguards.
[00:35:33] He's like, really guys?
[00:35:34] It's fine.
[00:35:35] It's potion con.
[00:35:37] And then he gets kidnapped.
[00:35:38] Did he fight you on this storyline or was he like, all right, I'll get kidnapped for this one?
[00:35:44] He, I didn't give him a choice.
[00:35:46] I was like kidnapping.
[00:35:48] I love torturing that little man.
[00:35:51] In my mind, he's two inches tall.
[00:35:53] Yelling at me like, don't you do this?
[00:35:55] I'm like, get in the microwave.
[00:35:57] In there.
[00:35:58] And it also, it made me laugh that like Eli too, he's so mad that he like, this is very early on.
[00:36:05] So like, I guess it's a spoiler, but it's really not.
[00:36:07] He wants to go on like training and they, he doesn't get picked for an event.
[00:36:12] Then he has to like be a bodyguard at potion con.
[00:36:14] Imagine if he had been gone.
[00:36:17] And this happened.
[00:36:18] Oh, he's already a mess.
[00:36:22] Taking the first Griffin back to Rosie.
[00:36:24] What?
[00:36:26] Hold on.
[00:36:27] Oh my gosh.
[00:36:28] I feel like everybody would be collectively like, we, we can't tell.
[00:36:32] We have to get him back first.
[00:36:34] We can't.
[00:36:34] We got to get him back before Eli gets back.
[00:36:36] He can't know.
[00:36:37] He can't know.
[00:36:38] So bad.
[00:36:39] Can you imagine if they just rescued Ambers and they were like, um, yeah, everything was fine while you were gone.
[00:36:43] Eli, nothing happened.
[00:36:45] No big deal.
[00:36:46] Right.
[00:36:46] No big deal at all.
[00:36:47] He was going to rampage.
[00:36:50] I love it so much.
[00:36:52] It's so cute.
[00:36:53] I just have already like, I'm not completely done yet.
[00:36:55] Yeah.
[00:36:56] But I just keep picturing like if he had been gone, like he was so grumpy, but if he had been gone.
[00:37:02] Oh, you, you do this thing and I, I guess this is like slight spoilers, but like I get to about 50% of the book and they're like getting ready to heist.
[00:37:12] Right.
[00:37:12] And I'm just like, we're only at 50%.
[00:37:14] I'm very anxious right now.
[00:37:17] Like, wait, wait, what's going to happen?
[00:37:19] Oh no.
[00:37:20] What's going to happen to my friends?
[00:37:22] I'm just like, but like you do it in such a way where it's like you, you expect something to happen, but at the same time, you're also like, but also they could get out of this.
[00:37:33] You're comfortable.
[00:37:33] I realized that it's only 50% of the way, but actually maybe they do succeed.
[00:37:41] Yeah.
[00:37:42] So, so how much like, so the last book was very much more focused on like the potion side of things.
[00:37:51] And now you have more of everybody's kind of abilities.
[00:37:54] And I can't remember is, is Viola new?
[00:37:57] Yes.
[00:37:58] Okay.
[00:37:58] Yeah.
[00:37:58] I first introduced her in the short story, Class of Cakes and Charms.
[00:38:02] She's the one who, and this is a spoiler for end of Rival Most Vile, but whatever.
[00:38:06] She is the baker who buys Eli's shop at the end of the book.
[00:38:10] So her name isn't mentioned, but like that's when she first enters Rosemond Street.
[00:38:14] Got it.
[00:38:14] Yeah.
[00:38:14] So, so now we're starting to see kind of everybody else and they're like working process.
[00:38:20] I just, I just read the scene where Dawn is like making a wand.
[00:38:23] Were there, I think I remember you saying like you did some sort of like research into like the potion, like the elements of the things that go into the potion.
[00:38:32] What, what kind of research, I mean, it's a different kind of situation because you know, wands and magic and things are not quite as real as elements of a potion.
[00:38:42] But like what kind of research went into kind of the things that they needed to do in order to be successful in their specific crafts?
[00:38:49] Yeah.
[00:38:50] I remember getting to that chapter where I was like, okay, Dawn's going to make a wand.
[00:38:53] How, how the hell does she make a wand?
[00:38:56] Oh no, I haven't thought about this.
[00:39:00] I didn't, I didn't really do any like carpentry or woodworking research because that's not the part of the wand that I wanted to focus on.
[00:39:07] I think I, I recall doing some research into like different kinds of gems and querces and how they can be cut and kind of what their like meanings are.
[00:39:16] But not that that really like comes across in the text.
[00:39:19] It was really just something to like wrap my head around.
[00:39:21] And I was trying to think of like, well, what's a, you know, rather than her just kind of like regularly in setting the gem, like what's a cool thing that she can do?
[00:39:28] What's a more dynamic way she can make this wand?
[00:39:31] And so, yeah, beyond that, I didn't have to do too much just because that's really the main chapter where she like focuses on her wand stuff.
[00:39:37] Yeah.
[00:39:37] I guess maybe not as much as I had to do for potions.
[00:39:40] At least when I was doing the potion illustrations, that took a little bit more research.
[00:39:45] There's a secret kind of code in this book too.
[00:39:47] If, if people pay attention to certain pages.
[00:39:51] Yes.
[00:39:53] That is so cool.
[00:39:54] I'm not going to say what it is.
[00:39:55] Listeners, you have to read the book and figure it out.
[00:39:57] But that's really cool and clever.
[00:40:00] Yeah.
[00:40:00] It was fun.
[00:40:01] It was fun to put together.
[00:40:02] I thought of that really early on and I was like, oh, this is going to be so cool.
[00:40:05] And I was like, wait, I have to make a code myself.
[00:40:07] Why did I find myself up for you?
[00:40:09] Oh God.
[00:40:10] How did they do it?
[00:40:12] Mistakes were made.
[00:40:13] No, but I did.
[00:40:14] Once I figured it out, I did enjoy it.
[00:40:15] And I hope, and I think some people have solved it.
[00:40:18] And so I don't think it's too, too hard.
[00:40:19] I did have to run it by a couple of people to make sure that it was doable.
[00:40:22] And I kind of decreased the difficulty.
[00:40:26] But yeah, I think it's, it's, it's fun.
[00:40:28] It's just a fun little thing.
[00:40:29] That's a fun Easter egg.
[00:40:30] Yeah, I love that.
[00:40:31] Okay, so we got a new POV with Dawn.
[00:40:34] What was it like delving into her mind since she's different from Ambrose and Eli?
[00:40:39] Yeah, I had a lot of fun not only just being in her POV, but also kind of being able to
[00:40:45] explore parts of book one that she was involved in that I think she still has lingering feelings
[00:40:51] about a lot of her kind of like burnout arc from book one.
[00:40:54] And she's still thinking about how she hurt her friends in that scenario.
[00:40:59] And some of that guilt, particularly when Ambrose is now in trouble again, some of that guilt
[00:41:05] kind of surfaces back up.
[00:41:06] So I appreciated kind of being able to explore that from her POV.
[00:41:10] And then, you know, I knew in book one that she deserved a love interest.
[00:41:13] And so I was like, yeah, she's gotta, gotta do this.
[00:41:16] Like, yeah, no, it was just, it was fun giving her somebody who could, Rory, somebody who could
[00:41:21] like match her freak, basically.
[00:41:24] Yeah.
[00:41:24] Because it didn't make sense to do like an opposite the track for this because Dawn is
[00:41:29] so energetic and like bubbly.
[00:41:32] And so I was like, she wouldn't really date somebody who is like morose and like, right.
[00:41:37] Just laying there.
[00:41:37] So she would date someone who has just as much energy and ambition as her.
[00:41:42] But I did give Rory fewer brain cells because that's...
[00:41:46] She got a few knocked out of her.
[00:41:49] Yeah, yes, yes.
[00:41:50] That's exactly what happened.
[00:41:52] She had a few knocked out of her over the course of her life.
[00:41:55] And yeah, so she, she kind of has a reckless Eli streak a little bit, which is always just
[00:42:00] really fun to write.
[00:42:01] Gets people into more trouble and then makes the story happen.
[00:42:04] So yeah, it was fun.
[00:42:05] I love it.
[00:42:05] So did this story get, I can't remember if you're a plotter or a pantser, but did you
[00:42:10] have this story kind of mapped out from beginning to end before you got started?
[00:42:14] Because I feel like there's a lot of moving parts to it that you kind of really need to
[00:42:19] find a way to keep straight.
[00:42:20] Right.
[00:42:21] I didn't, it took a while.
[00:42:23] I'm definitely a plotter.
[00:42:24] I've got like a whole like chart that I use.
[00:42:26] So I've got like, in order to keep all those moving parts straight.
[00:42:29] And so I've got like, okay, this is the chapter number.
[00:42:32] This is the POV that we're in.
[00:42:33] This is what happens.
[00:42:34] And then, you know, this is how we're moving forward.
[00:42:36] You know, there's like a column for Ambrose and Nat's relationship, Don and Rory's relationship,
[00:42:40] Eli's arc, which is kind of spoiling.
[00:42:42] Sorry, won't mention it here.
[00:42:43] And then like, you know, who are we seeing a Rosemary?
[00:42:46] Just to make sure I'm not forgetting about Sherry for seven chapters, like stuff like that.
[00:42:50] So that can extend honestly pretty far.
[00:42:52] And then I try to fill all of that out before starting the draft.
[00:42:56] That took a lot of iterations, though, I will say.
[00:42:58] I can imagine.
[00:42:59] Yeah.
[00:43:00] That's a lot to like keep track of.
[00:43:02] We had another author on recently who talked about they had to make like an encyclopedia.
[00:43:06] Yeah.
[00:43:07] Just to keep track or like a show Bible of how to make sense and remember.
[00:43:12] Yeah, I mean, if you're doing like a high fantasy, that's like, you know, you've got a bunch of different cultures and gods and locations and characters.
[00:43:18] Like, yeah, I think you would need to make a wiki for that.
[00:43:22] Yeah.
[00:43:22] We also have Xavion, which I feel like is someone we love to hate, but then we're going to hate that we love.
[00:43:29] Like that?
[00:43:30] Yeah.
[00:43:31] That feels very accurate.
[00:43:33] Yeah.
[00:43:33] Like we're going to be like, damn it.
[00:43:35] I kind of love him.
[00:43:37] Not going to lie.
[00:43:38] So where did he come from?
[00:43:39] Like, did he just pop in one day?
[00:43:42] Well, I knew Ambrose needed a an academic rival.
[00:43:45] And Ambrose actually kind of mentions on his very first bookstore date with Eli.
[00:43:50] They're looking there in the Eli drags into the like scientific journal section.
[00:43:54] But Ambrose starts ranting about this one person who like is slightly unethical with their methods.
[00:44:01] And, you know, it's just like purely academic ranting, which is wicked, cut off by Eli.
[00:44:04] But I was like, oh, I really like the idea of Ambrose having this kind of academic rival who very much stays a rival.
[00:44:14] And I was like, well, I really want Ambrose to I love when Ambrose debates.
[00:44:18] I wrote a short story called Welcome to Potion Con, which is Ambrose first potion convention.
[00:44:23] The first time he goes is like a 17 year old and he gets involved in a debate there and really kind of like makes a name for himself right away.
[00:44:29] And I was like, I really I want him to debate again.
[00:44:33] Yeah.
[00:44:34] Like a little man argue.
[00:44:36] And so Xavier and kind of came out naturally from that is they were a nice, neat foil.
[00:44:41] And I want to say that some of there are some stuff in what they mention that is foreshadowing for book three.
[00:44:47] Oh, OK.
[00:44:49] Now we have to pay attention to them a little bit more closely.
[00:44:52] Right. Now I'm like, wait a minute.
[00:44:55] It's pretty subtle. I don't think you would be like, oh, I know exactly what it is.
[00:44:58] But I think once you know what book three is about, you're like, OK, like, yeah.
[00:45:01] Yeah.
[00:45:02] OK.
[00:45:02] OK, well, speaking of book three, is there anything you can say about it that's not too spoiler?
[00:45:09] Any kind of secrets that you can give us?
[00:45:12] Yeah, there's a couple of things.
[00:45:14] So Capture Cauldron, it doesn't end on a cliffhanger or anything.
[00:45:17] It resolves nicely, but there's a very clear kind of hook into what book three could be about.
[00:45:22] And so without going into that too, too much, I will say that the merchants all need to go on maybe a quest of their own.
[00:45:30] Ooh.
[00:45:31] And so, yeah, maybe we get to see how they are thrown into the world of adventuring rather than just the world of shopkeeping for better and for worse.
[00:45:39] I'm so excited.
[00:45:41] So I'm very excited to write about them just like kind of like bumbling.
[00:45:45] Like they're not going to be perfect.
[00:45:47] Oh my gosh.
[00:45:48] I love it.
[00:45:50] Yeah.
[00:45:50] I kind of always knew I was like, I have to I have to get Rosamund Street out of Rosamund Street.
[00:45:55] Yeah.
[00:45:56] And make them all go on a little quest together.
[00:45:58] So this is like Sherry, Paniker, Grimm, Ambrose, Eli, Dawn, all like going on their little journey.
[00:46:04] Oh my gosh.
[00:46:06] It's going to be great.
[00:46:06] They're going to make so many mistakes.
[00:46:08] It's going to be wonderful.
[00:46:10] And then what else?
[00:46:11] It'll of course still be Ambrose and Eli's POV.
[00:46:13] But then we are going to add a third POV for a character that is introduced in Capture Cauldron.
[00:46:19] Ooh, I like it.
[00:46:20] Ooh, now I'm trying to decide which one.
[00:46:22] Oh, I'm excited.
[00:46:23] That is so cool.
[00:46:25] All right, we've got to jump to the questions that we always ask because we don't want to
[00:46:29] keep you too long.
[00:46:30] We have a segment, you know, by now called Fictional Boyfriend of the Week.
[00:46:33] Doesn't have to be a fictional boyfriend.
[00:46:35] Karen's had a fictional granny.
[00:46:37] We've had fictional pets.
[00:46:39] Fictional found families.
[00:46:40] Fictional found families.
[00:46:41] Do you have any fictional characters that you're really vibing with lately?
[00:46:45] Oh man, it's so I'm currently writing The Spirit's Curse, which is book three in my
[00:46:51] other series.
[00:46:51] Yes.
[00:46:52] And so the little fictional man that I am vibing with right now as someone that I also like
[00:46:57] to torture a lot is Demir, who is Emery's manager, who is always very standoffish and
[00:47:03] very competent, but tries to act cool and tries to not care about things, but is actually
[00:47:10] secretly like a mother hen.
[00:47:12] He takes on a larger role in Spirit's Curse and kind of has an arc of his own.
[00:47:16] He's very much kind of thrown into something from his past that he's just been trying to
[00:47:20] avoid.
[00:47:21] And he is a sassy little jerk about it.
[00:47:25] He's been a lot of fun to torture, just like Ambrose and just like, yeah, throwing in Xavion
[00:47:30] to just like poke.
[00:47:31] I'm just poking like a Demir again.
[00:47:33] He's two inches tall.
[00:47:34] You're a menace.
[00:47:35] I love it.
[00:47:37] I have a menace.
[00:47:37] I love it.
[00:47:38] Oh, that is wonderful.
[00:47:40] More authors should be a menace to their characters.
[00:47:42] I feel like.
[00:47:44] Yeah.
[00:47:45] All right.
[00:47:45] Characters torture the authors enough.
[00:47:47] It's time to turn the tables.
[00:47:48] And readers and readers.
[00:47:50] Like we got to, we got to poke them back.
[00:47:54] So obviously we have been and will continue to be recommending your books and we love them
[00:48:00] so much, but we would like to know what are you reading?
[00:48:03] What are you recommending right now?
[00:48:05] Yeah, I, hold on, I need to look it up because I write down all the books that I read and I
[00:48:10] know I just finished a good one and I have a stack of like six books.
[00:48:15] This is when the like names of everything just leaves your brain.
[00:48:19] Yeah.
[00:48:20] Okay.
[00:48:20] I am the one that I most recently read, which is, I think it was Meg, Meg Tea Room's recent
[00:48:27] book club read is The Spell Shop.
[00:48:29] Okay.
[00:48:29] Oh yeah.
[00:48:30] Sarah Beth Durst.
[00:48:32] Yes.
[00:48:32] Yeah.
[00:48:32] So yeah, I just read that one.
[00:48:34] Really enjoyed it.
[00:48:35] Very cozy, very focused on like building up the characters in this like little village
[00:48:41] and focusing on jam making and you know, spells and it's just, it's very, very cute and small
[00:48:49] and very like leisurely paced, I would say.
[00:48:52] And so I do recommend that for anyone who's like, I, they just want like a cozy read.
[00:48:58] Definitely that one.
[00:48:59] Also, I wish I had the book near me.
[00:49:01] The cover is like gorgeous.
[00:49:02] Oh, it is so pretty.
[00:49:03] And looks around too.
[00:49:04] I'm like, hold on.
[00:49:05] I have it somewhere.
[00:49:07] It's literally in the other room.
[00:49:09] I don't know why I'm like, oh, I have it.
[00:49:11] Yeah.
[00:49:12] Conveniently, this book that I didn't know you were to talk about right next to me.
[00:49:17] But yeah, that's, I just read that.
[00:49:18] And then some of the books on my nightstand are, they're in more of the more cozy vein.
[00:49:22] So Honey Witch, The Marvelous Light.
[00:49:25] And what's the other one?
[00:49:26] Oh, I just had thought of it.
[00:49:28] I hate when that happens.
[00:49:30] The Phoenix Keeper.
[00:49:31] So it's about the new keeper for mythological creatures.
[00:49:34] All books that are literally in the other room right now.
[00:49:38] Like, wait a minute.
[00:49:40] Yeah.
[00:49:40] I know they're all like well-known.
[00:49:42] I should have read them like two years ago.
[00:49:44] I'm just working up right now.
[00:49:45] I haven't read them either.
[00:49:47] And actually, I think Phoenix Keeper and Honey Witch just came out this year.
[00:49:51] So you're like, good.
[00:49:52] You're fine.
[00:49:53] Okay.
[00:49:53] You can pass.
[00:49:53] I feel better about that now.
[00:49:55] Yeah.
[00:49:55] Yeah.
[00:49:55] You can pass on that.
[00:49:56] And Spell Shop came out this year too.
[00:49:58] So yeah.
[00:49:59] Yes.
[00:49:59] I think you're solid.
[00:50:00] You put them writing, okay?
[00:50:01] Yeah.
[00:50:02] Two series.
[00:50:03] So two series going on.
[00:50:07] Okay.
[00:50:07] So what, I mean, obviously we've got The Spirit's Curse, which is what's, that's the next book,
[00:50:14] right?
[00:50:14] Yeah.
[00:50:15] That's the third one in the Loot Songs.
[00:50:17] That's the final one in the Loot Songs.
[00:50:19] That'll come out May of next year.
[00:50:21] And then Draft for a Dragon will come out October of next year.
[00:50:26] A Draft for a Dragon?
[00:50:28] Is that what you said?
[00:50:30] You talking about that?
[00:50:31] Yeah.
[00:50:32] That's the third one.
[00:50:34] That's the one after Capture Cauldron.
[00:50:36] Oh, we got a title.
[00:50:38] Did we know this?
[00:50:38] I didn't think I knew this title.
[00:50:40] This is very exciting.
[00:50:42] I think I, I don't remember.
[00:50:43] Do I have it listed in the back of the book?
[00:50:45] I think I just did.
[00:50:46] Before I realized that like withholding titles was a thing.
[00:50:50] Oh yeah.
[00:50:51] No, I guess I don't have it at the end of the book.
[00:50:53] I think I have it maybe in some other ones.
[00:50:55] I was like, I don't remember.
[00:50:57] I feel like if anything, I would have seen it in your newsletter and I'm like, I don't
[00:51:00] think I've seen that.
[00:51:01] So this is very exciting.
[00:51:02] Yeah.
[00:51:03] I haven't put it in there.
[00:51:04] We just got, it's an exclusive.
[00:51:06] We just, we've got it.
[00:51:08] We've got it.
[00:51:09] Yeah.
[00:51:09] I'll talk about it more eventually.
[00:51:11] But yeah, I am.
[00:51:12] I'm working on that one now as well.
[00:51:14] And I am hoping, so yeah, I'm basically hoping to wrap those series next year.
[00:51:17] That's so exciting.
[00:51:19] I love that you don't make us wait a hundred years between books.
[00:51:23] I try.
[00:51:24] Yes.
[00:51:25] When, where in the process are you for Spirit's Curse?
[00:51:30] Spirit's Curse, I am currently writing, it's technically like a draft one, but I did several
[00:51:34] draft zeros before it.
[00:51:36] I am trying to wrap that up in the next month or so to get that to alpha readers.
[00:51:39] And then while it's with alpha readers, I will work on a treatment for Draft for a Dragon
[00:51:44] because I have an outline for it.
[00:51:45] But that's kind of all I have right now.
[00:51:47] I love that.
[00:51:48] Which is kind of scary in retrospect.
[00:51:50] It just, it feels so like, it feels so organized.
[00:51:53] And I'm like, that could literally never be me because I'm such a mess.
[00:51:56] But like, I love hearing about it.
[00:51:59] I'm just like, over here, like giddy.
[00:52:02] Oh my gosh.
[00:52:03] Well, of course, now is the perfect time to remind you that you do have to come back.
[00:52:09] You're legally obligated for all book releases.
[00:52:11] Oh no.
[00:52:13] It's so terrible.
[00:52:15] We're so sorry.
[00:52:17] Hate it for you.
[00:52:18] Sorry.
[00:52:19] So, so sorry.
[00:52:20] So we'll see you in May to talk about Spirit's Curse.
[00:52:23] It's so exciting.
[00:52:25] Oh, so fun.
[00:52:26] Oh my gosh.
[00:52:27] Okay.
[00:52:27] So when this, the book comes out on the 7th, right?
[00:52:32] If I'm remembering correctly.
[00:52:32] So it comes out in, as of this recording, four days.
[00:52:35] Yeah.
[00:52:35] So by the time this recording, this episode comes out, it will be out in the world.
[00:52:40] So y'all go pick up A Captured Cauldron right now.
[00:52:43] It is going to look very beautiful next to your copy of Arrival Must Vile, which you definitely
[00:52:47] have after we talked about it last time.
[00:52:50] I was going to say, I hope so.
[00:52:51] Because I spoiled a bunch of things.
[00:52:57] We've screamed about this book for long enough that if there is a listener who has not read
[00:53:02] Arrival Must Vile yet, this is their fault.
[00:53:05] Yeah.
[00:53:06] This is your problem.
[00:53:07] Yeah.
[00:53:07] You don't get to gaslight us.
[00:53:10] We have definitely talked about it.
[00:53:13] Yeah.
[00:53:13] You definitely should have already read it.
[00:53:16] So thank you so much, RK, for coming back and chatting with us.
[00:53:20] We're so excited for everybody to be able to read this book.
[00:53:23] It's so fun.
[00:53:24] Like you said, you made kidnapping cozy.
[00:53:27] It's so cozy and so good.
[00:53:31] It's like going home with all your besties.
[00:53:33] Like I was so excited.
[00:53:34] I just, I love, I love going back to Rosamund Street and just hanging out with these people.
[00:53:40] Like they're just, they're the best.
[00:53:42] And we're still manifesting an Amazon show.
[00:53:45] We're still manifesting a show.
[00:53:49] Manifesting that.
[00:53:50] I'm manifesting a show.
[00:53:51] All of it.
[00:53:51] Yeah.
[00:53:52] We need all of it.
[00:53:53] Every bit.
[00:53:55] Thank you so much.
[00:53:56] We'll talk to you soon.
[00:53:59] Yeah.
[00:53:59] Thank you so much for having me.
[00:54:01] It's always fun.
[00:54:01] Always.
[00:54:02] Always.
[00:54:03] Always.
[00:54:03] You're welcome.
[00:54:03] Anytime.
[00:54:05] All right.
[00:54:06] We'll talk soon.
[00:54:07] Bye.
[00:54:07] Have a good one.
[00:54:08] You too.
[00:54:09] I love her.
[00:54:11] I love her so much.
[00:54:12] Like what better person to be on our hundredth episode than RK Ashwick.
[00:54:17] Like really?
[00:54:18] Just, just such a vibe.
[00:54:20] Just perfection.
[00:54:21] And just.
[00:54:22] It's always so much fun.
[00:54:23] And it's like, it's not even, it's like not even just a milestone for us, like a hundredth episode.
[00:54:27] Right.
[00:54:28] But it's also like her third time.
[00:54:30] Like it's like one of the, like, I don't know.
[00:54:33] Threes feel nice to me.
[00:54:35] Like.
[00:54:36] I don't know that we've had anybody three times.
[00:54:38] Other.
[00:54:39] Amber?
[00:54:39] Have we had Amber three times or have we had Amber twice?
[00:54:42] That is a good question.
[00:54:43] Because that's who I was thinking of.
[00:54:44] It's between RK Ashwick and Amber D. Lewis on who has been on our podcast the most.
[00:54:49] I know.
[00:54:50] Now I'm thinking about it.
[00:54:51] When did we first had her on for book two?
[00:54:56] Two.
[00:54:57] So that would be, but did we miss one because it was during a break?
[00:55:01] Is the question.
[00:55:02] See?
[00:55:02] Oh, now we have to, we have to go back and look.
[00:55:05] That's a good question because I'm not sure.
[00:55:07] Yeah.
[00:55:08] I think the only person who would be close would be Amber.
[00:55:11] I mean, that just shows we got good taste.
[00:55:14] That's all I gotta say.
[00:55:16] We do.
[00:55:16] We have excellent taste.
[00:55:17] And if y'all aren't taking our recommendations by now, I don't know what to tell you.
[00:55:22] I really.
[00:55:23] You know what else trips me out?
[00:55:24] Like we've had a lot of people twice too.
[00:55:26] We have.
[00:55:27] Hannah Nicole Mayer.
[00:55:28] Robbie.
[00:55:29] Lauren Congesson.
[00:55:31] Lauren Congesson.
[00:55:32] Technically.
[00:55:32] Emily and Austin.
[00:55:35] Lana Ferguson.
[00:55:36] Lana Ferguson.
[00:55:36] Did we have her choice?
[00:55:37] We did.
[00:55:38] I thought we did.
[00:55:38] Yeah.
[00:55:38] Did we?
[00:55:39] Yeah.
[00:55:39] We did.
[00:55:40] We did.
[00:55:40] Right?
[00:55:40] We had her for the nanny and for, um.
[00:55:42] The fake mate?
[00:55:43] The fake mate.
[00:55:44] I was like.
[00:55:44] Yeah.
[00:55:45] My brain is not working.
[00:55:47] Yeah.
[00:55:48] Oh my gosh.
[00:55:49] How wild are we?
[00:55:51] Look at this.
[00:55:52] A hundred episodes.
[00:55:53] A hundred episodes in.
[00:55:54] Who'd have thought?
[00:55:55] Look at us.
[00:55:55] Look at us.
[00:55:56] Who'd have thought?
[00:55:58] Oh my gosh.
[00:55:59] I love it.
[00:56:00] Now for an announcement.
[00:56:02] Yeah.
[00:56:03] For next week.
[00:56:04] We have.
[00:56:05] Well, we were just talking about the repeat offenders that we have.
[00:56:09] We have a brand new author.
[00:56:11] A brand new.
[00:56:13] Starting.
[00:56:13] Starting the new.
[00:56:15] The next hundred off.
[00:56:17] Really great.
[00:56:18] Like this is so exciting.
[00:56:19] I'm so excited.
[00:56:20] The energy you guys are about to experience.
[00:56:22] Y'all are not ready.
[00:56:24] And I'm so excited.
[00:56:26] So ready.
[00:56:27] Y'all are not ready.
[00:56:29] Because the energy level is going to be through the roof next week.
[00:56:32] I swear.
[00:56:33] We are having Jason June onto the podcast.
[00:56:37] His next release.
[00:56:39] He just had a release.
[00:56:40] I don't have my Kindle ready.
[00:56:42] But yeah.
[00:56:42] But his next release.
[00:56:43] It's not even the cover.
[00:56:44] Is flopping in a winter wonderland.
[00:56:46] It comes out.
[00:56:47] It's a Christmas book.
[00:56:48] It comes out in November.
[00:56:49] But we're talking to him now.
[00:56:51] And it's just.
[00:56:53] Oh, it's going to be so exciting.
[00:56:54] I'm like.
[00:56:55] I love him.
[00:56:56] I love him.
[00:56:57] Yeah.
[00:56:58] He's just the best.
[00:56:59] A dream.
[00:57:00] Yeah.
[00:57:00] Jason June is just.
[00:57:02] Adore him.
[00:57:03] Adore him.
[00:57:04] Chef's kiss.
[00:57:05] And just.
[00:57:05] I can.
[00:57:06] I just imagine the energy already.
[00:57:08] Like I'm already like.
[00:57:10] I'm hyped up.
[00:57:11] It's going to be great.
[00:57:12] Yay.
[00:57:12] So that's next week.
[00:57:14] And now it's time for a spiel.
[00:57:16] Yeah.
[00:57:16] Gosh.
[00:57:17] That's where we're at.
[00:57:18] Okay.
[00:57:18] I do have my notes in front of me.
[00:57:19] Thank goodness.
[00:57:20] Because you'd think I know this by now.
[00:57:22] But I don't.
[00:57:23] A hundred episodes in.
[00:57:24] I still don't know.
[00:57:24] I was in a meeting recently where someone was like.
[00:57:27] If you have any questions, comments, concerns.
[00:57:29] And I was like.
[00:57:30] It started to put my hands up.
[00:57:31] Like you want to tell us what we need?
[00:57:35] Thankfully we're cameras off.
[00:57:37] I love that.
[00:57:38] That's so funny.
[00:57:40] I was like.
