[00:00:00] And what am I going to do? Say sorry, Adam Silvera. We changed our mind. No, no, absolutely not.

[00:00:09] Welcome to The Incoherent Fangirl where we have a repeat offender intruder today and we get to talk about love with some people who are like love goals.

[00:00:20] Basically, a relationship goal.

[00:00:23] I am Karin from Neptune Bar.

[00:00:25] And I'm Mandy of the new Metropolitan Opera House.

[00:00:29] Fancy.

[00:00:30] You're fancy this week.

[00:00:31] I'm a fancy bitch.

[00:00:35] In our timeline, it is May 16th and in y'all's timeline, it is May 24th.

[00:00:41] Why do you like to say mean things?

[00:00:43] Good Lord.

[00:00:45] Is it almost the end of May?

[00:00:48] Really? I don't like that.

[00:00:49] It's almost my birthday.

[00:00:51] I know. That's bonkers.

[00:00:53] Look at us go.

[00:00:54] I feel like this year flew by.

[00:00:56] It's like I feel like Christmas was last week.

[00:00:58] I know. Crazy.

[00:01:00] This week in Fangirling, Mandy, what'd you do?

[00:01:09] Not a whole lot.

[00:01:10] So I mentioned last week we had a COVID diagnosis in the house and then I got the funk.

[00:01:15] I tested a bunch of times.

[00:01:16] I was negative for COVID.

[00:01:17] I just, I don't know.

[00:01:18] The universe was like, you like to take care of people when they're sick.

[00:01:21] We're going to make you sick too so you can't really do that.

[00:01:23] So great.

[00:01:24] I did finish the audiobook of The North Wind by Alexandria Warwick.

[00:01:28] So just a small recap.

[00:01:30] It was the Beauty and the Beast meets Hades and Persephone kind of retelling that follows

[00:01:34] Wren of Edgewood who is taken in place of her sister by Boreas the North Wind as what

[00:01:40] she thinks is a sacrifice to this god, but enemies to lovers things happen.

[00:01:45] I really enjoyed it.

[00:01:46] I can't wait to read about the other winds.

[00:01:49] There's one like without getting too spoilery, the brothers are not the most

[00:01:54] brotherly of brothers.

[00:01:56] Like the winds.

[00:01:58] So there's one brother in particular that does some things.

[00:02:03] And so it's like, are we going to get a POV book from him about like him falling

[00:02:09] in love and we're supposed to like the warm and cuddlies because...

[00:02:13] Okay.

[00:02:14] So I'm interested to see how that goes.

[00:02:16] I'm sure she can do it, you know, but I'm curious to see my future in these

[00:02:21] books.

[00:02:22] So as I've mentioned, I was sick a lot this week, just like congestion and

[00:02:26] nasal. I think it was like a severe allergy reaction.

[00:02:30] We had a lot of those storms which rustle up the specific allergens I have.

[00:02:35] And I think that I just, my body was like grown up.

[00:02:37] So and my husband had COVID so we didn't really leave the house.

[00:02:41] We didn't like, I tried to work that I would like log off early, whatever.

[00:02:44] And when I'm that sick, reading is hard even though it's something that I

[00:02:48] love. And Josh was like, I am shocked to hear you say that.

[00:02:52] And I'm like, you're not a reader.

[00:02:54] I was like, readers understand.

[00:02:55] Like you get to that point where I can't turn a page.

[00:02:57] I can't hit the button.

[00:02:58] I can't make my eyes follow words.

[00:03:01] I just want to stare.

[00:03:02] Even with my clicker, like I just want to lay here and stare at something

[00:03:07] and not have to do any work about it.

[00:03:09] So I put on season two of The Gilded Age.

[00:03:11] Okay.

[00:03:12] So I can't really go into spoilers because it's season two.

[00:03:14] So I'll just give you the premise of The Gilded Age if you've been

[00:03:17] living under a rock.

[00:03:18] So Julian Fellows is the creator of Dante and Abby and has also created

[00:03:22] The Gilded Age. It takes place in 1880s New York.

[00:03:25] And I'm just going to read the Wikipedia plot paragraph because it said it

[00:03:28] better than me.

[00:03:29] The series follows Marion Brooke, a young woman entering 1882 New York City's

[00:03:34] rigid social scene who is drawn into daily conflicts surrounding the new money

[00:03:39] Russell family and the old money Van Ryan Brooke family.

[00:03:43] The two are neighbors across 61st Street near Fifth Avenue on the Upper East

[00:03:47] Side. And the series explores conflicts of the upper and upper middle

[00:03:51] classes, the African-American upper class and the domestic workers who tend to

[00:03:55] all of their needs.

[00:03:56] So you have the Russells, which is George, who's kind of based on Jay Gould

[00:04:01] and the Vanderbilts, his wife Bertha and then their two children Larry and

[00:04:05] Gladys. Larry's like a man.

[00:04:07] Larry's an adult, but he's not like he still has to do what his mom says

[00:04:12] because she is very, she is very controlling and I love her.

[00:04:16] Okay. I breathe for Bertha Russell.

[00:04:20] I do. And then Gladys is their daughter.

[00:04:22] She's also an adult.

[00:04:24] She's just entering society though.

[00:04:26] So she's, you know, getting cards to dance and all of that.

[00:04:30] So they arrive on the scene and immediately Bertha wants to be like the center

[00:04:34] of the social scene. But since they're new money, a lot of the old money ladies

[00:04:38] kind of snub her and they like don't take her seriously or they're like,

[00:04:41] look at how gauche everything she does is so gaudy.

[00:04:44] And I can't give like a spoiler, but there's a specific time in season one

[00:04:49] where she is like, they're trying to publicly snub her and George comes in.

[00:04:53] There is nothing that man will not do for his wife to make her happy.

[00:04:57] And it is like George Russell is everything.

[00:05:00] Every he played, he's played by Morgan Spector. So he's fine as hell.

[00:05:06] But it's just like, that is how you treat a wife in 1880s New York, sir.

[00:05:11] Love it.

[00:05:11] Then you have across the street, you have the Van Rynes and Brooks.

[00:05:15] So you have Agnes Van Rynes,

[00:05:17] who's a widow and her spinster sister Ada Brooke.

[00:05:20] And they've recently taken in their niece Marion after her father dies

[00:05:23] bankrupt and like leaves her with nothing.

[00:05:25] And of course a woman in the 1880s is nothing without a man who has money.

[00:05:29] So Agnes specifically is very gaudy. You know, we're old money.

[00:05:34] We conduct ourselves well. Ada is a little angel.

[00:05:38] She's very whimsical and sweet.

[00:05:40] Then you have Peggy Scott,

[00:05:41] who's a recent graduate of the Institute for Colored Youth.

[00:05:44] She encounters Marion on a train and through like a series of events,

[00:05:49] ends up working as Aunt Agnes' personal secretary.

[00:05:52] So she's writing all of her correspondences,

[00:05:54] which is a full time job because the New York social scene does not stop.

[00:05:59] Then as with Downton,

[00:05:59] you have the lives of all of the employees that like are at the table

[00:06:04] downstairs once they've served dinner and all of the drama that they get

[00:06:07] into. So there's an Aster. Mrs. Aster is there.

[00:06:10] I'm waiting for some Rockefellers, some Carnegie's,

[00:06:12] some Cranes and some Morgans to show up if they aren't already like represented

[00:06:17] somewhere else. And I just haven't caught it.

[00:06:18] So I freaking love a period piece. I love anything Julianne Fellows touches,

[00:06:23] but I particularly love the Gilded Age because I love the Gilded Age era

[00:06:29] in itself because I grew up going to Jekyll Island.

[00:06:31] Have you heard of Jekyll Island? Okay.

[00:06:33] So it's this island off of the coast of Georgia, obviously. And it's,

[00:06:38] it's the Jekyll Island club. Okay? So in the 1880s,

[00:06:43] the Jekyll Island club is founded as like a winter retreat for the elite in

[00:06:49] New York and all of like the Gilded Age millionaires.

[00:06:52] It was known as the richest most inaccessible club in the world.

[00:06:56] So there's the Jekyll Island club hotel,

[00:06:58] which was insanely exclusive already,

[00:07:01] but the richest of the rich had actual houses built in Millionaire's

[00:07:05] Village. So there's the, there's a house for the Rockefellers,

[00:07:08] the Vanderbilt's, the Morgans, the Pulitzers, the Cranes, the Goodyears,

[00:07:12] all of those like giant like names that you still know today.

[00:07:16] Jay Gould's kids become members eventually.

[00:07:19] And so if George Russell is based on Jay Gould and the Russells go to

[00:07:24] Jekyll Island in a future season, I will die.

[00:07:28] My favorite is the Cran Cottage. And when I was a teenager,

[00:07:31] I was absolutely convinced that I was going to get married there,

[00:07:33] but I'm not rich and I did not marry rich.

[00:07:36] So we did not get married at the Cran Cottage, but every time we went,

[00:07:40] I was like, it's like the perfect setting.

[00:07:42] There's this fountain with steps around either side of it.

[00:07:45] And inside is so beautiful. Anyways, you can still go,

[00:07:48] like you could go tomorrow if you're in Georgia and in Southeast Georgia

[00:07:52] and are like, you know,

[00:07:53] I really want to see where these millionaires live.

[00:07:55] You can go to the Jekyll Island club. You can tour all of these old homes.

[00:07:59] Some of them are restaurants. Some of them are just set up for tour.

[00:08:02] I grew up going there.

[00:08:03] So like hearing about like a show about the Rockefellers or the Rockefellers

[00:08:08] aren't there yet, but this character is based on the Vanderbilt.

[00:08:11] I'm like, this is everything. This is everything I want.

[00:08:15] I'm almost done. I love the Gilded Age though.

[00:08:17] If you haven't watched the Gilded Age, you've got to, there's only,

[00:08:21] there's two seasons out now, eight episodes per season. They go by so fast.

[00:08:25] I literally have been in a rut since that episode ended and they haven't

[00:08:30] even started filming season three yet.

[00:08:31] They've signed on for it, but they'll start in July.

[00:08:34] I started Second Night Stand by Carilia and Faye Stutzwaters,

[00:08:38] more on that later. And then last but not least we had Auntie's Day.

[00:08:43] So I'm not the twins mom,

[00:08:45] but there is not an aunt day that's widely celebrated.

[00:08:49] So they decided that they're going to do Auntie's Day on Mother's Day.

[00:08:53] So I woke up and there was an Auntie's Day banner hanging on the

[00:08:56] fireplace. We ran for us following CDC guidelines,

[00:09:01] a quick lunch and a shopping spree at the bookstore. I went,

[00:09:04] I was the only one who'd go in. They were like,

[00:09:05] you're going to go buy whatever books you want.

[00:09:07] But since Joshua wasn't feeling good, I was like, you know what? He was fine.

[00:09:10] But I was like, I'm just going to grab a few.

[00:09:13] So I still have some cash to keep shopping again.

[00:09:16] Then I got a handmade flower bouquet and a very sweet card.

[00:09:20] And then we went and saw my mom and my grandmother for Mother's Day.

[00:09:23] And I made my mom a book bouquet. And yeah, it was very cute.

[00:09:28] And I, my baby niece had field day today and we had to replace the TV.

[00:09:34] And I think that was it. I kind of had a boring week. I just,

[00:09:37] it's been the Gilda day, just all I can think about.

[00:09:39] So I can talk about, so I can think about what did you do this week?

[00:09:43] So I finished reading Heaven Breaker by Sarah Wolf,

[00:09:46] which we talked about the last week. Quick one sentence recap.

[00:09:50] We have Sonali who is hell bent on getting revenge and uses giant

[00:09:54] jousting robots in space to do so.

[00:09:57] That's about pretty much encompasses it.

[00:10:00] And it's just as wild as it sounds and it sounds like it wouldn't work,

[00:10:05] but it works so well. And I'm really excited for book two.

[00:10:09] I cannot wait. And by the time this episode comes out,

[00:10:12] the book will be out. So go into a store and pick it up.

[00:10:15] Hey, I still have mine here. That's what it looks like if you're on Patreon.

[00:10:20] Yes. It's so pretty. I, so for Mother's Day,

[00:10:24] I wanted to do absolutely nothing. I stayed in bed all day.

[00:10:29] My daughter brought me breakfast in bed. She brought me lunch in bed.

[00:10:33] I was in my Kindle hut. I did not move from my Kindle hut.

[00:10:37] I put on, in my Kindle,

[00:10:39] I put Second Night Stand by Karelian Face Nets Waters,

[00:10:43] and I just laid in bed and read that all day. And it was glorious.

[00:10:48] It was so nice. I did not leave my bed maybe to probably to go to the

[00:10:51] bathroom, but like I did not do anything but read that day.

[00:10:55] And it was the best Mother's Day ever.

[00:10:59] So I read Second Night Stand and again, more on that later.

[00:11:03] I read Our First Chance by Robbie Couch,

[00:11:06] which is a prequel short story to Another First Chance,

[00:11:10] which is his upcoming novel.

[00:11:12] I am convinced that he wrote this just so that he could

[00:11:17] make reading Another First Chance hurt even more than we already have.

[00:11:21] Oh no.

[00:11:22] Because in this very, it's a very short story.

[00:11:26] It's like four chapters and it's one from each,

[00:11:29] from one chapter from four different characters POV.

[00:11:33] So one is Mavis, one is Dylan, one is River.

[00:11:37] And then one is, I don't know his name,

[00:11:40] but I think he's the creator of The Affinity Trials.

[00:11:43] And so you see Mavis and River's like lifelong friendship,

[00:11:47] like their relationship and how like comfortable they are with each other.

[00:11:51] You see what seems to be the beginning of The Affinity Trials

[00:11:56] and you see kind of the start of Dylan and River's friendship.

[00:12:00] And if you know the premise of Another First Chance,

[00:12:03] all of that information that I just told you is very heartbreaking.

[00:12:07] Yeah.

[00:12:08] So I'm convinced this was just cruel and unusual punishment.

[00:12:13] He hangs out with Silvera. Okay. What do we expect?

[00:12:16] Exactly. But it was, I mean, it was, it was really good.

[00:12:20] It was really quick. Like I said, it's four chapters.

[00:12:22] It's a short story, but it hits all the points very quickly

[00:12:27] and very like it's it's there.

[00:12:30] And you know that you're being told this for a reason.

[00:12:34] And I'm sure it's going to play out once you get to Another First Chance.

[00:12:37] So I'm excited to get to that.

[00:12:40] And then I read Of Manners and Murder by Anastasia Hastings.

[00:12:45] It is 1885 London.

[00:12:47] You have Violet, whose aunt Adelia has decided to run off with her latest paramour,

[00:12:52] and she leaves Violet in charge of Miss Hermione,

[00:12:55] which is like a popular advice column.

[00:12:58] And the first letter that Violet receives and like tries to respond to

[00:13:03] leads her down the path of investigating the death of one Ivy Armstrong,

[00:13:09] which turns out to not be as like innocent a death

[00:13:14] as it seems on the surface.

[00:13:16] There is more than meets the eye.

[00:13:18] And so it is like a I don't know if I would say it's a cozy mystery,

[00:13:25] but it is definitely cozy mystery adjacent.

[00:13:27] It's not quite as cozy as I think when I think of cozy mystery.

[00:13:31] You're like, you know, vibes.

[00:13:33] It was really good. I really enjoyed it.

[00:13:35] I did not know, had no clue how I was going to end up.

[00:13:38] And it definitely took like a turn at the end.

[00:13:41] I was like, did not see that coming.

[00:13:43] That is wow.

[00:13:45] Did not see that coming.

[00:13:46] That was really great.

[00:13:47] I liked it. So I would recommend it.

[00:13:50] And the last thing is I listen to the audiobook of Lady Charlotte

[00:13:53] Always Gets Her Man by Violet Marsh.

[00:13:56] This is like a brother's best friend romance

[00:14:01] that is combined with a mystery.

[00:14:04] It's like a historical romcom.

[00:14:06] And you've got Lady Charlotte who has

[00:14:13] who is being forced to be betrothed to Holly,

[00:14:17] I think is his name, Lord Holly, who has had two previous wives

[00:14:23] die under mysterious circumstances.

[00:14:25] And he's just generally not a nice person.

[00:14:30] He's not he's not generally not a nice person.

[00:14:34] But, you know, her parents are very much like,

[00:14:36] he's the son of a duke, he's the heir to a dukedom.

[00:14:39] So you're going to marry him.

[00:14:42] You're going to get a third.

[00:14:43] But they can't officially like announce the engagement

[00:14:46] or the betrothal until Holly's father returns from,

[00:14:50] I don't know, from the continent.

[00:14:52] I don't know where he is.

[00:14:53] He's not in London, but he will be back in like,

[00:14:56] I don't know, six weeks or something.

[00:14:58] So they can't officially announce this betrothal until then.

[00:15:01] And so Lady Charlotte does what any self-respecting woman would do

[00:15:05] and runs away and invests and finds herself at a woman owned

[00:15:13] coffee house that is it's run by her cousin

[00:15:17] and her cousin's cousin on the other side.

[00:15:20] And she's like, you know what?

[00:15:22] What if I invested in this?

[00:15:24] We expand it and we have kind of like a coffee house

[00:15:28] speakeasy where it's like secret word of mouth

[00:15:31] and anybody can come and it's like an intellectual discussion place.

[00:15:35] Everybody is kind of on equal footing kind of thing,

[00:15:38] which is radical for 1880s London.

[00:15:40] Right. And so women know that self is radical.

[00:15:44] And so then you have Dr.

[00:15:47] Matthew Talbot, who is the brother of.

[00:15:52] Oh, I just saw his Viscount Holly, Viscount Holly,

[00:15:57] who is like the complete opposite of his brother.

[00:16:00] Right. He is like the best guy ever.

[00:16:02] Super sweet. And has and he's like best friends with Violet's.

[00:16:09] No, Violet is the author.

[00:16:10] Charlotte. Sorry.

[00:16:12] I keep getting those names confused and I don't know why.

[00:16:15] He's like he's best friends with Charlotte's twin brother.

[00:16:19] And he and Charlotte's brother are secretly investigating Holly

[00:16:25] to prove that he had his previous wives murdered.

[00:16:29] But there are more secrets afoot because Talbot was on the continent

[00:16:34] and doing things that he has kept secret.

[00:16:38] It's kind of like, no, in a good way.

[00:16:41] It's like it's like if you mixed a historical romance

[00:16:45] with a modern day romcom and double oh seven in a cozy story.

[00:16:53] There's a lot going on there and it's so chaotic, but it's so good.

[00:16:59] So, yeah, I really enjoyed it and I highly recommend it.

[00:17:03] And I think that was my week.

[00:17:07] I mean, I talked about Mother's Day.

[00:17:09] I did today do an Instagram live with Lauren Congesson,

[00:17:14] which was very like stressful.

[00:17:16] I was like nervous when I started.

[00:17:18] Great. Thank you.

[00:17:20] It was very nervous.

[00:17:21] And then I like saw Lauren's face and like, OK, I'm just Lauren.

[00:17:24] I'm just on a phone call with my friend.

[00:17:26] It's not a big deal. Nobody's watching.

[00:17:28] It's fine. And I was texting Lauren afterwards.

[00:17:31] I was like, listen, like everything that could have gone wrong went wrong.

[00:17:35] Right. So first we had the mishap where like Lauren couldn't log on.

[00:17:39] Like she couldn't see it.

[00:17:40] So she can log on and then Lauren couldn't find like the stand for her phone.

[00:17:45] And then my my Internet like dropped so that we had to restart it.

[00:17:51] And then we were like two minutes in and I get a phone call while Lauren's talking.

[00:17:57] So I had to like do that.

[00:17:58] And then we're going and one of my headphones dies.

[00:18:04] And I was just like all the things, all the things are just happening.

[00:18:09] And we're just trying to talk.

[00:18:10] We're just, we just want to talk about her new book, which is very exciting.

[00:18:16] Yeah, but it was really fun.

[00:18:18] So it's saved to my Instagram.

[00:18:20] If if you didn't get to catch it live, it's there.

[00:18:24] And it was really fun.

[00:18:25] January, January 14th, 15th, January 14th, 2025.

[00:18:31] You can preorder it now wherever you get your books.

[00:18:34] But if you preorder from Parnassus books, you can get a signed and personalized

[00:18:38] copy and you can also ask for doodles and there will be preorder goodies

[00:18:42] that will be revealed later.

[00:18:44] So I always ask for all of my books from Parnassus

[00:18:49] from Lauren are like doodled in.

[00:18:51] So doodles.

[00:18:54] Yes.

[00:18:54] So yeah, that was pretty much my week.

[00:18:57] I went on my daughter's field trip today, which was fun.

[00:19:00] But yeah, that was my week.

[00:19:02] Do you have a fictional boyfriend of the week?

[00:19:09] I do.

[00:19:10] I do.

[00:19:11] I'm going to say I have two.

[00:19:12] The first is Rex from Heaven Breaker.

[00:19:15] He is like so opposite of Sonali.

[00:19:18] Like if this was a grumpy sunshine trope, he would be sunshine

[00:19:22] and she would be grumpy.

[00:19:23] Oh yeah.

[00:19:24] And I love that dynamic.

[00:19:27] And it's like so clear.

[00:19:29] Like it's a slow burn, like so slow burn that I think it would give

[00:19:36] Assistant to the Villain a run for its money of how slow burn is.

[00:19:39] Right.

[00:19:39] Wait a second.

[00:19:40] I'm going to throw this.

[00:19:42] I love a slow burn but oh.

[00:19:44] It's slow slow burn, but it's like so obvious he's gone for her.

[00:19:51] Yeah.

[00:19:51] So obvious.

[00:19:53] And like, I don't think either of them has admitted it to themselves.

[00:19:57] And it's so good.

[00:19:59] I'm so excited.

[00:20:00] So I love him.

[00:20:01] And then also Dr.

[00:20:04] Matthew Talbot from Lady Charlotte always gets her man.

[00:20:08] He is like, he's got like the coolness of James Bond while also being

[00:20:16] like super nerdy and shy.

[00:20:20] Like he could kick your ass, but he could also talk to you about

[00:20:23] comic books, you know what I mean?

[00:20:25] So yeah.

[00:20:26] And he's like so like respectful of women, which is radical at 1880s

[00:20:33] London, you know, so it's just like.

[00:20:37] You don't know how funny it is what you just said, but you will

[00:20:40] find it out in just a minute.

[00:20:42] Okay.

[00:20:42] Well that's, that's, that's what I have to say about my fictional

[00:20:47] boyfriends.

[00:20:48] Tell me, tell me what you have to say.

[00:20:50] Let me tell you about Larry Russell from the Gilded Age.

[00:20:54] He is so cute.

[00:20:56] Okay.

[00:20:56] He's got like almost it's gotta be black, maybe dark, dark brown, black

[00:21:01] hair, hairy styles, dimples and the sweetest smile that this world has

[00:21:07] ever seen I'm so gone for Larry Russell learned how to treat women

[00:21:11] from his daddy George Russell the goat.

[00:21:15] But what is so funny about what you just said is let me read you

[00:21:18] this paragraph I've written.

[00:21:20] So historical fact and not a major plot spoiler, but just in case you

[00:21:24] want to worry about any minor spoilers, skip ahead.

[00:21:28] So George Russell, who's the dad is a big investor of the, like the

[00:21:32] building of the Brooklyn bridge in season two, right?

[00:21:34] And rather than overseeing his interests himself, cause he's also got

[00:21:37] railroad money and he's got like a lot of logs in the fire or whatever

[00:21:41] they say, so he gives this task to his son Larry's an adult.

[00:21:44] You are going to oversee, you know, the Russell money and what

[00:21:48] it's doing at the bridge.

[00:21:49] So Larry is told to go find Mr.

[00:21:51] Washington Roebling, who is the engineer about finalizing the Brooklyn

[00:21:55] bridge, cause it's about to open.

[00:21:57] Larry goes to meet Mr.

[00:21:58] Roebling and finds out this is historically factual.

[00:22:01] Okay.

[00:22:02] That Mr.

[00:22:02] Roebling has been basically bedridden for over 10 years and his wife,

[00:22:06] Emily Warren Roebling, who's a very well versed engineer in her own

[00:22:10] right has kind of taken over as engineer and she's been using his name and

[00:22:15] claiming that she's, oh, well he told me to say this.

[00:22:19] I went and talked to him and it ain't been him.

[00:22:21] So there's apparently a plaque on the Brooklyn bridge, like two right

[00:22:25] now in her honor, because the bridge would not be there if it was not

[00:22:29] for Emily Warren Roebling.

[00:22:31] So anyways, Larry immediately sees like, she's not communicating

[00:22:34] on behalf of her husband.

[00:22:36] And he kind of like, he says he's leaving, but he kind of sneaks

[00:22:38] back in and sees her like writing all of the things when she's in a room by

[00:22:41] herself.

[00:22:42] And so he like immediately sees it.

[00:22:44] She's brilliant.

[00:22:44] And she's like, if people knew a woman designed the bridge, they wouldn't use

[00:22:47] it.

[00:22:48] And like we need this bridge.

[00:22:50] He is like, that's nonsense.

[00:22:52] Absolutely not.

[00:22:53] They have like the party at the opening and he is like, I want to

[00:22:56] acknowledge Emily Warren Roebling.

[00:23:00] And he worded it to where she got credit, but it also didn't like, cause

[00:23:05] she didn't want her husband to be shit on either.

[00:23:07] Right.

[00:23:07] He had like decompression sickness, which is like the same thing that can

[00:23:10] happen to you if you scuba dive too fast.

[00:23:13] Like you come up from scuba diving too fast.

[00:23:15] He was literally bedridden and she's like, he can't help this.

[00:23:18] I don't want his legacy tainted.

[00:23:20] But so he like, he wanted to give credit where it's due to a woman in

[00:23:24] the 1880s in New York rather than pish-pashing because she's a woman.

[00:23:28] Yes.

[00:23:29] Isn't this the same guy who like in season one, I didn't watch it.

[00:23:34] I feel like I remember you talking about it.

[00:23:36] The guy who the old money people were shitting on his wife.

[00:23:40] And so he comes in and like buy something out from under them.

[00:23:44] Dad.

[00:23:44] Okay.

[00:23:45] I wasn't going to say this because I thought it was a spoiler.

[00:23:47] Yes.

[00:23:48] He comes in and he's like, Oh, I'll just buy everything you have.

[00:23:51] Yeah.

[00:23:51] Yeah.

[00:23:52] I remember you, it was like coming back to me.

[00:23:56] I remember you talking about it and I was like, wait, wait,

[00:23:59] just like sit there and just like my jaw is on the floor.

[00:24:03] Every time George is doing anything with his wife in this season, there's

[00:24:08] like the Academy for music is the opera that everybody goes to, but then

[00:24:12] somebody's opening the Metropolitan Opera House, which is where I'm from

[00:24:15] this week and she got kind of lean.

[00:24:17] She wants a box at the Academy, but they've shunned her and they like

[00:24:20] just treat her like she doesn't exist.

[00:24:22] And so she's like, well, I guess I have to support this one.

[00:24:24] And now I'm going to use all of my time to make this one better.

[00:24:29] And things happen and conveniently, every time her husband goes into a

[00:24:35] room with anybody who's involved, the problems are solved and he'll say,

[00:24:39] it's a simple accounting issue.

[00:24:43] No, it's just that George is wonderful and loves you and wants

[00:24:45] you to be happy.

[00:24:47] But back to Larry, if he and Marianne, who is like the main, main

[00:24:51] character from season one are not end game, I am moving away from earth

[00:24:55] immediately and I've been saying this since season one, she's always

[00:24:58] got some other guy, you know, there's always, oh, well, you know, we

[00:25:02] want you to be talking to him.

[00:25:03] He isn't a very interesting man.

[00:25:04] He could do it, Larry is always there.

[00:25:07] Like if something goes wrong, if someone hurts her feeling, she

[00:25:10] just turns around and there's my best friend from across the street,

[00:25:13] Larry with Harry Styles and the dimples and the sweetest.

[00:25:20] So I am like, this is slow burn.

[00:25:22] It is slowly burning and I am dying watching it.

[00:25:26] And I'm just like, if they don't make beautiful babies soon and take them to

[00:25:30] Jackal Island, I'm going to leave earth.

[00:25:33] I love that we had the same vibes separately.

[00:25:38] This is when you said, oh my gosh, the way he treats women in London

[00:25:43] and 18 in the 1880s.

[00:25:45] I was like, you said 1880s New York.

[00:25:47] And I was like, let me tell you, I'm about to talk about 1880s London.

[00:25:52] We're in our period piece.

[00:25:53] Eros.

[00:25:55] You know, I think it's so funny that we're having this conversation, like

[00:25:59] completely unaware that this was going to happen, but there has been like

[00:26:03] historical romance, like discord on threads, like people are claiming

[00:26:09] that historical romance is dying or dead.

[00:26:12] And I'm like, are you?

[00:26:14] Bridgerton started today and it's historically that I haven't started

[00:26:18] it.

[00:26:18] Historical fiction, historical romance, any like historical period.

[00:26:21] And I'm like, are you okay?

[00:26:23] All I want.

[00:26:25] Are you okay?

[00:26:26] Whoever is saying this just because it's not trending on tick tock, like

[00:26:30] just because it's not something you personally want to

[00:26:33] shut your face.

[00:26:35] Yeah.

[00:26:35] Anyways, my God.

[00:26:37] Anyways, Larry Russell, I'm going to send you a picture of him and

[00:26:40] you're going to be like, ah, baby angel.

[00:26:43] I'm in baby angel.

[00:26:45] That smile.

[00:26:46] If you're having a bad day, just think of Larry Russell's smile

[00:26:48] and you'll feel better.

[00:26:50] I love it.

[00:26:50] That sound means we have an intruder alert.

[00:26:59] We have both a repeat offender and a new intruder.

[00:27:03] This is so exciting.

[00:27:05] You guys, we have Karelia and Faye Stetswaters, author of Second

[00:27:11] Night Stand.

[00:27:12] This is Faye's debut.

[00:27:14] This is Karelia and Faye's first time writing together as a couple.

[00:27:18] And I cannot wait to talk about this.

[00:27:20] You guys, it's so exciting.

[00:27:21] Thank you all for being here.

[00:27:22] Karelia, welcome back.

[00:27:23] Faye, welcome for the first time.

[00:27:25] You know, so what we normally do is we ask our authors to give us kind of an

[00:27:31] elevator pitch of the book in case somebody has been living in the rock

[00:27:34] and never heard of it.

[00:27:35] All right.

[00:27:36] Sounds good.

[00:27:37] Okay.

[00:27:38] Yeah.

[00:27:38] So this is the story of a ballerina and a burlesque performer who fall in

[00:27:43] love on a reality television talent show.

[00:27:47] They both have a lot at stake.

[00:27:48] Lillian, the ballerina is at risk of losing her ballet company, which is

[00:27:54] losing money.

[00:27:55] Their funders are pulling out and she needs the prize money to keep going.

[00:28:00] Now Izzy, aka burlesque performer Blue Lennox, she's bought a vintage, as

[00:28:06] in completely run down theater where she wants to create a safe performance

[00:28:11] space for LGBTQ community members.

[00:28:15] But the theater needs a ton of work.

[00:28:18] She's poured all her money into it.

[00:28:20] She's at risk of losing the theater and maybe her house and she needs the

[00:28:24] prize money.

[00:28:25] They meet on the show and well, let me back up here one sec.

[00:28:30] They meet before the show and have one lovely night together, but both of

[00:28:35] them are one night only kind of people.

[00:28:37] No scones in the morning, no cuddling, no exchanging phone numbers.

[00:28:42] They are like shooting stars in each other's lives or so they think until

[00:28:47] they end up on the show together.

[00:28:49] And the chemistry is incredible and of course it's a love story.

[00:28:55] Oh, one of them says something at during the one night stand about how I'm

[00:29:00] not going to buy a second bedside or another bedside table.

[00:29:03] And they said, so no second night stands.

[00:29:06] And I was like, I lost it.

[00:29:08] I lost it.

[00:29:09] So good.

[00:29:11] Oh my gosh.

[00:29:12] So clever.

[00:29:14] That was so clever.

[00:29:15] I just thought that was so funny.

[00:29:16] I nearly fell on the floor.

[00:29:18] I was laughing so hard like that.

[00:29:19] It's amazing.

[00:29:20] So good.

[00:29:23] They totally gets credit for that one with all the books I've written

[00:29:27] before this one, I proposed a title and then the editors and the

[00:29:32] publicists chose another title, which is totally fine coming up with

[00:29:36] titles is way too stressful for me.

[00:29:38] So I didn't mind, but second night stand, which was phase idea was the

[00:29:42] first title where the editor was like, yeah, that's good.

[00:29:46] We'll go with that.

[00:29:47] I love it.

[00:29:48] Okay.

[00:29:48] So the first I want to know, can we coin the term there coin like a

[00:29:52] genre cozy spice because like with this book, I'm not done yet, but

[00:29:57] I've so far I'm so homey and so warm and cozy when I'm reading.

[00:30:02] Then it's spicy too.

[00:30:04] And I'm like, okay, cozy spice.

[00:30:07] I feel like you guys started a new genre.

[00:30:10] I love it.

[00:30:11] I'm writing it down.

[00:30:12] Yeah, we have more in this genre.

[00:30:15] I like that.

[00:30:17] Yeah.

[00:30:18] I think you should get serious points for inventing a new genre.

[00:30:22] Like I said, you guys did it.

[00:30:26] Nice.

[00:30:27] I mean, I feel like it's only fair where people feel cozy.

[00:30:31] The friendship is there, you know, a lot of side characters, but it's

[00:30:36] a community and we really wanted that through on the page.

[00:30:39] So you succeeded.

[00:30:43] Absolutely.

[00:30:45] So what's it like co-writing with your partner, with your wife?

[00:30:49] Wow.

[00:30:50] She is amazing.

[00:30:52] She writes every day.

[00:30:53] She's so dedicated.

[00:30:55] And I learned so much from her in this process.

[00:30:57] I like my, the way I think of all over the place, lots of ideas.

[00:31:01] It's an idea, you know, everything, you know, idea second.

[00:31:04] And so throw it all on the page.

[00:31:07] And then my wife is very good at pulling out what are the kernels?

[00:31:10] What are the good pieces?

[00:31:11] How do they fit together?

[00:31:13] And she's very good at, she's very good at everything.

[00:31:16] And I'm just, I'm good at coming up with a lot of fun and interesting ideas.

[00:31:21] Which makes us perfect combination because, you know, Faye's got so many

[00:31:26] ideas and I have had a lot of discipline and I'm very organized and

[00:31:31] linear, but I'll get an idea.

[00:31:34] And then I just often can't see anything else.

[00:31:38] So it'd be like, this idea is not working, but what else could I possibly think of?

[00:31:43] And then, you know, Faye and I will sit down.

[00:31:47] We'll look at where we are in the plot.

[00:31:49] And then she'll propose 16 or 17 great ideas.

[00:31:52] And then we'll talk through like the pros and cons of each one.

[00:31:55] And it's really fun.

[00:31:56] It's way less stressful than writing on my own because I am full of self-doubt,

[00:32:03] but I have this absolute and understandable confidence in Faye.

[00:32:07] Like, I have complete confidence in her, whereas I doubt myself a lot.

[00:32:13] So it's really fun to know that she's like in it with me.

[00:32:17] And I will write something and I'm just like, well, here's my best effort.

[00:32:22] I just want you to just take a look at it.

[00:32:24] And she's just so supportive.

[00:32:27] You know, this is really great.

[00:32:27] I love what you did here.

[00:32:28] I love what you do here.

[00:32:29] I love what you did here.

[00:32:30] And then it's just a confidence builder.

[00:32:33] And then it just inspires me to just keep going.

[00:32:36] So I like to do like three scenes, I would call them in a row so I could get

[00:32:42] some continuity and then put it in the drive.

[00:32:44] My wife will look at them and see how they fit.

[00:32:46] So it's been fun.

[00:32:47] Fun and collaborative.

[00:32:49] And we're keeping the same brand image as my last two romances.

[00:32:53] They're in the same world.

[00:32:56] The protagonist from behind the scenes cameo in Second Night's Dance.

[00:33:00] So we really wanted to keep the experience the same for the readers.

[00:33:04] So if they like the last two, they're going to like this one.

[00:33:07] So we'll talk about it.

[00:33:08] I call it like putting the brand image, like filter on it.

[00:33:11] So we'll write together and then I'll go through and I'll make sure that

[00:33:16] this is, you know, the tone, the style is in keeping with the tone and

[00:33:20] style of the previous two books so that people can enjoy them, you know,

[00:33:24] as a standalone series.

[00:33:27] But I definitely think this one is spicier and I think that's because

[00:33:32] we, we wrote it together.

[00:33:35] I'm so glad you brought up the cameo because I was reading it and I was

[00:33:41] like, why does this name sound so familiar?

[00:33:45] And I kept going, I kept going.

[00:33:47] And then they said something about her partner or her wife.

[00:33:49] And I was like, Oh my God, I know these people.

[00:33:53] I know these people.

[00:33:54] It was like, it was because it's been a while since I read behind the

[00:33:58] scene. So I was like, why, why do I know this?

[00:34:01] Why do I know this?

[00:34:02] And it was just such a fun Easter egg that I wasn't, wasn't exactly

[00:34:08] expecting, but I loved it and it fits so well into the narrative of

[00:34:13] this story in particular as well, because of kind of where that story

[00:34:18] goes, I don't want to give too much away, but did you, did you go

[00:34:23] into it knowing that you were going to include that specific part?

[00:34:27] I'm trying really hard not to give spoilers.

[00:34:30] Include that specific part or did it kind of just come up naturally

[00:34:35] in the process of writing the story?

[00:34:37] I love having cameos because I love seeing the characters after

[00:34:41] their happy ending, because the romance covers the first little bit

[00:34:45] of their relationship, but then there's so much more.

[00:34:47] Faye and I have been together for 25 years.

[00:34:50] And so, you know, the part that would have made it into a romance

[00:34:53] novel is just like such a little part of our total relationship.

[00:34:56] So the cameo, I feel like it gives a way to show that continuing

[00:35:01] relationship, but I can't remember exactly besides that.

[00:35:05] I like cameos how we came up with this one.

[00:35:07] Can you Faye?

[00:35:07] No, I'm trying to think of that.

[00:35:10] Yeah.

[00:35:10] This such, I mean, when I look back at our notes, when I

[00:35:14] look at, you know, we have a storyboard pictures who we thought

[00:35:18] the characters would look like, because I'm a visual person.

[00:35:20] I need a lot of hints.

[00:35:22] I need to stay in the work because we have full time jobs and it takes

[00:35:26] me a while to get back into the setting and so I'm trying to remember.

[00:35:31] Oh my goodness.

[00:35:31] Yeah.

[00:35:32] I can't pull that part.

[00:35:34] It's in a notebook somewhere.

[00:35:37] Well, regardless, it worked so well.

[00:35:40] So it's perfect.

[00:35:42] Excellent.

[00:35:43] So if you've read, if you've read Kareli's other books, you're

[00:35:46] gonna, you're gonna have a, you're in for a treat guys.

[00:35:49] So the banter in this book stands out to me so much from the very beginning.

[00:35:54] They are able, Izzy and Lillian are able to just go back and forth

[00:35:58] and kind of meet each other without stumbling even they're just, I mean,

[00:36:01] they, they stumble internally, but they are so witty and so

[00:36:05] back and forth with each other.

[00:36:07] How much fun was that to write?

[00:36:08] Because it seems like that had to have been a blast.

[00:36:11] It really was.

[00:36:11] Just like so enjoyable.

[00:36:13] Yeah, it really was.

[00:36:14] You know, really getting their voices, you know, having that consistency,

[00:36:19] you know, how do people talk?

[00:36:20] How do we share, you know, what's funny?

[00:36:23] Uh, what's a miscommunication?

[00:36:25] How do you recover from that?

[00:36:26] Just, it's just some spunk.

[00:36:27] Yeah.

[00:36:28] Yeah, definitely.

[00:36:29] I just love the dialogue in this book.

[00:36:31] I just, yeah, the back and forth is really excellent.

[00:36:35] Where did, where did the story originally come from?

[00:36:38] Because, you know, you've got two very different, I mean, I want to

[00:36:42] say very different, but at the end of the day, they are a kind of similar

[00:36:45] worlds, but they're, you know, you've got ballet and you've got burlesque

[00:36:48] performance and you don't often see that come together.

[00:36:51] Where did, where did their respective, I guess, backgrounds come from?

[00:36:55] Well, the character of Blue originally started as actually the best friend

[00:37:02] of obsession guaranteed, uh, Beckett.

[00:37:05] So I had imagined a book for Beckett and then over a variety of reasons,

[00:37:10] including that, you know, this is a fresh project for Faye.

[00:37:14] So we decided not to have that, have Izzy be specifically Beckett.

[00:37:20] Although for all the people who have asked, is Beckett going to get her

[00:37:24] own story, but you could just pretend, just pretend because really

[00:37:30] a lot of Blue's character is, is Beckett from Satisfaction Guaranteed.

[00:37:36] And then I am an absolute fan of dance movies.

[00:37:41] If it is dance, if it is cheerleading, if it is, if it's reality TV show

[00:37:45] competition, I will watch it, I will binge watch it, I will root for.

[00:37:49] And so the idea of the show was a way to put those kinds of genres together.

[00:37:55] And they're so, one is so, you know, burlesque as you're very talented.

[00:38:00] You're very, very talented, but very, uh, risque in a way.

[00:38:04] And then, then the ballet is very rigid, very formal, that the techniques,

[00:38:08] their steps is what is very trained in the other one, you know, not as much.

[00:38:12] And so the idea of putting those together to me, like the

[00:38:15] opposites of tracking idea.

[00:38:18] These worlds just kind of colliding and, and, and the challenges

[00:38:21] of being in those worlds are impacting people's lives on a daily.

[00:38:25] And it's the, the troop leader needing the money and the ballet

[00:38:29] troop leader needing the money to keep, keep doing what they enjoy doing.

[00:38:33] So, so did your interest in all of those shows help with writing and like having

[00:38:38] like a technical idea of how a ballet dancer would be different from a burlesque

[00:38:43] dancer and what their worlds would be like, or did y'all, did y'all have to

[00:38:46] do outside research other than like, look, I watch this all the time.

[00:38:50] I know we went to ballet, we went to burlesque shows, you know, I wanted

[00:38:56] to understand the physicality.

[00:38:57] I also wanted to understand like the moves.

[00:39:00] I mean, ballet is very technical, you know, to make sure that the

[00:39:04] commands that, you know, Lillian has given out, you know, match, you know,

[00:39:08] what the ballet dancer or should be doing.

[00:39:12] So yeah, I learned a lot.

[00:39:15] Faye does more of the research, which I love because I'm a, even though

[00:39:19] I'm an English teacher, writing teacher, I am a sloppy researcher.

[00:39:22] So, and Faye, but I'll be like, oh, it's not in the first 10 hits

[00:39:27] in Google, it must not be known by anyone in the universe.

[00:39:30] And Faye will dig so deep in, she'll be like, look what I found.

[00:39:34] I'm like, where?

[00:39:35] I just saw the 370th page.

[00:39:37] The page that's in the Google search.

[00:39:39] It's amazing what's out there.

[00:39:41] I'm a lawyer in my day job.

[00:39:42] So you have to go deep into the legal research to find the

[00:39:46] case that you need, so you never stop.

[00:39:48] That's a good point.

[00:39:49] Yeah.

[00:39:49] I want to do your due diligence.

[00:39:51] I'm with you, Corellia.

[00:39:53] I am a, this must not be real.

[00:39:55] I must've made it up.

[00:39:57] It's not there.

[00:39:58] It's not.

[00:39:58] Google says it's not there.

[00:40:01] If Alexa can't tell me, I don't know it.

[00:40:07] Can we talk about this cover?

[00:40:10] Oh my gosh.

[00:40:13] It is so good.

[00:40:15] Can you talk about the process of getting this cover designed?

[00:40:19] How much input did you guys have just kind of brag on this

[00:40:22] because this is their facial expression.

[00:40:25] Absolute perfection.

[00:40:28] Tell me all about it.

[00:40:30] So this was a total bucket list item for me.

[00:40:33] The artist is Vanessa Kelly.

[00:40:36] She's amazing.

[00:40:37] She did a lot of the artwork for Red, White and Royal Blue

[00:40:40] and a lot of other books that people love and have heard of.

[00:40:43] And she's my favorite illustrator.

[00:40:45] And I had art from, she did the cover for, or at least art

[00:40:49] for Alison Cochran's Kiss Her Once For Me.

[00:40:52] So I had a framed picture from Vanessa Kelly's Etsy store

[00:40:59] on my wall and our publisher will always ask,

[00:41:04] what are your ideas for the cover?

[00:41:06] They get to design and pick it, but what are your ideas?

[00:41:09] And I said, well, here's the kind of thing I'm interested in.

[00:41:13] And I love Vanessa Kelly's art.

[00:41:15] So if you could find someone like that, that would be awesome.

[00:41:19] And then I guess Vanessa was trying to email, they hired her,

[00:41:26] but they didn't tell us.

[00:41:27] They hired her, but they didn't mention that to us.

[00:41:30] And she was trying to get in touch with the art department

[00:41:34] or something at the publishers with a question.

[00:41:37] But for some reason, her emails were all going through to spam.

[00:41:41] So they weren't getting her messages and she had a deadline.

[00:41:43] So she messaged me on Instagram.

[00:41:46] And I think the question was which character is taller?

[00:41:48] And she's like, which of your characters?

[00:41:49] She's like, I love your book.

[00:41:51] Which character is taller?

[00:41:52] And I was like, the book is not even out in art.

[00:41:55] Like how, who is this?

[00:41:57] Oh my gosh, it's Vanessa Kelly.

[00:41:59] Oh my gosh.

[00:42:00] They hired her to do the cover.

[00:42:02] So that was like absolutely amazing.

[00:42:06] And she sent us the initial sketches, asked for our input

[00:42:10] in terms of what are they wearing?

[00:42:13] You know, I think she even maybe gotten that from the book.

[00:42:15] But, you know, we were able to get feedback.

[00:42:18] We wanted a dark, complexed black woman.

[00:42:22] We wanted short hair.

[00:42:23] We wanted a pervy white woman with blue hair.

[00:42:26] You know, so yeah, it was really fun to work with her.

[00:42:30] She developed those and showed us this beautiful work.

[00:42:34] What a dream.

[00:42:36] Listen, we had somebody on the podcast recently, also from Forever,

[00:42:41] who they had asked her, I think it was like about

[00:42:44] audiobook narrators and just casually threw out like,

[00:42:47] haha, wouldn't it be funny if we got this person?

[00:42:50] Not that they would ever do it.

[00:42:51] And then they did.

[00:42:53] Apparently Forever is like really, really good at making dreams come true.

[00:42:57] They are.

[00:43:00] Oh my gosh, I love that story.

[00:43:02] So cool.

[00:43:03] And I love that they didn't tell you until you just get a call DM.

[00:43:06] Like, we made your dream come true.

[00:43:10] We forgot to mention that.

[00:43:11] We forgot to mention that.

[00:43:14] No big deal.

[00:43:15] Thank God for spam.

[00:43:17] Geez.

[00:43:22] So we've gotten to talk to Karelia about Satisfaction Guaranteed

[00:43:26] and Behind the Scenes Buffet.

[00:43:27] This is your first foray into publishing.

[00:43:31] So what has that experience been like for you?

[00:43:34] I know you've been here with Karelia for her books, but like to be also

[00:43:38] in the dryer seat.

[00:43:38] It still doesn't feel real.

[00:43:40] You know, the books came in the mail, the box.

[00:43:43] I open it up and I see my name and I'm like, oh my gosh, we did this.

[00:43:46] I still I still can't believe it.

[00:43:48] We're having a book launch in a couple of weeks in Portland

[00:43:51] and at an actual bookstore.

[00:43:54] And, you know, people will be coming to see us and to talk about,

[00:43:58] you know, this book.

[00:43:59] And of course, my colleagues and our friends.

[00:44:01] And it's just really exciting and fun.

[00:44:03] And it's sex positive.

[00:44:04] I really like the messages in the book.

[00:44:06] I really like so much.

[00:44:08] You know, it's just been a wonderful experience.

[00:44:10] And then I get to hang out with my boo.

[00:44:11] Yeah, I mean, it's just, you know, still had to fully hit.

[00:44:15] I love you so much.

[00:44:17] Yeah. You guys are going to make my face hurt.

[00:44:19] Yeah, I just like truly I love and I feel like

[00:44:23] and we talked about this last time when you were on Karelia,

[00:44:26] how much your love like shines through not only in your work,

[00:44:30] but in the way you present yourself in the way you talk.

[00:44:33] And I feel like that's doubled in this book.

[00:44:36] You can tell how much you guys love each other.

[00:44:40] And how much love went into it.

[00:44:43] My heart, I don't know.

[00:44:44] My heart is just not handling all the just just exploding with happiness.

[00:44:48] I love it so much.

[00:44:50] Thank you. Thank you.

[00:44:52] It was fun.

[00:44:53] And, you know, I think we always talk about we want to

[00:44:56] we love our relationship, but they were pretty successful, you know,

[00:44:59] and we can't really give that kind of advice to other people

[00:45:02] because people would think you're obnoxious.

[00:45:04] But now also we are in our relationship, but through our characters

[00:45:08] and them showing the passion and love and their patience

[00:45:11] and great communication, I think is a fun way to be able to do those.

[00:45:15] Do you identify with one character or the other more?

[00:45:20] I think I totally do.

[00:45:22] I'm blue.

[00:45:24] I'm totally blue.

[00:45:30] I love it so much.

[00:45:33] Yeah, yeah.

[00:45:35] It was fun to write that, you know,

[00:45:38] character who's so rigid and strict and disciplined to write those pieces

[00:45:43] because it's really restricting.

[00:45:44] She's not going to do these things that are liberating and free.

[00:45:47] She's going to be thinking about how she is in the world

[00:45:51] and how other people see her because she's on stage and has been a performer.

[00:45:55] So I think it has to be impossible to write without even a little bit

[00:46:00] of self-insert because you only have your experiences, you know.

[00:46:04] And so it's nice that you have two perspectives that can both add

[00:46:08] and make such a lovely end result and like bring so much of yourselves

[00:46:12] and other people that you've seen and researched

[00:46:15] when you're going to ballets and burlesque shows and all of that.

[00:46:18] But yeah, that is so cool.

[00:46:20] Yeah, we went to the coast, you know, got to go to the coast

[00:46:24] to you kind of bring to life that the coastal scene, you know,

[00:46:28] the challenges were also fun to kind of think about.

[00:46:31] What do they look like in the real world?

[00:46:33] Is this something people would really do?

[00:46:35] OK, we have an idea book at home, which you can't find.

[00:46:38] But some of the challenges in the story come from our idea book.

[00:46:43] The idea book is full of ideas that we have

[00:46:46] that are some of them really good and some of them you're like, oh,

[00:46:51] are you drinking?

[00:46:52] You can't stand up with that.

[00:46:56] And some of them, a lot of them are products and we sort of we check off

[00:47:00] when we see that someone else has invented the product.

[00:47:03] So we put in the idea book like headphones that you can sleep in.

[00:47:06] Well, that's totally a thing you can buy now.

[00:47:08] I want some shower ones. Oh, I need to get a hat.

[00:47:13] I said the other day on threads that I want someone to make a Roomba

[00:47:16] for teeth so that I could brush my teeth while I'm doing all my skin care.

[00:47:20] I don't want to do this for this long.

[00:47:22] Yeah, I need something that cleans my teeth while I clean my skin.

[00:47:26] You need an idea book.

[00:47:28] I need a book.

[00:47:31] We're going to start doing that now. Just have a book.

[00:47:33] Yeah, I'm going to have an idea book by my bed.

[00:47:36] I love this scene where they're promoting the reality TV show challenge.

[00:47:40] They have to promote the outdoor wear that has giant

[00:47:44] cougar eyes painted on the butt to deflect predators.

[00:47:49] So that was in the idea book.

[00:47:52] That was one of our ideas was, you know, you get this like cool urban wear,

[00:47:56] but it's got like giant eyes, you know how they have like,

[00:47:59] if you want to scare crows away and you put up an owl sculpture.

[00:48:04] So so that was in the idea book.

[00:48:07] That was us. You know, I pretend we would go hiking.

[00:48:09] She talk about cougars and like cougars and snakes.

[00:48:13] I'm afraid of cougars.

[00:48:14] You know, but if I had these, you know, cougar deflecting genes,

[00:48:17] that's how we came up with the eyes on the back and then the cougar will think

[00:48:20] hey, what's that in the idea book?

[00:48:23] That's brilliant.

[00:48:25] I love the idea book.

[00:48:27] Listen, somebody at some point hung a paper bag up in their porch

[00:48:32] and realized that it would deflect bees and wasps and stuff.

[00:48:36] If they hadn't had their idea, nobody would know to do that.

[00:48:39] So, I mean, cougar deflecting pants could be the next big thing for hikers.

[00:48:45] Yeah. Yeah.

[00:48:46] I mean, don't knock it.

[00:48:47] I'm not going to. That's kind of brilliant.

[00:48:51] OK, so we have.

[00:48:52] Yeah. I was going to say complete shift from the cougar deflecting pants.

[00:48:57] We have a segment on our podcast, which we call Fictional Boyfriend of the Week.

[00:49:01] And it doesn't have to be a boyfriend.

[00:49:03] Sometimes we pick. I had a fictional granny.

[00:49:05] It's just kind of fictional found family pick

[00:49:08] picking a fictional character that we really kind of vibed with that week.

[00:49:11] So I'm curious if you guys have any fictional characters.

[00:49:16] Either of this week that you're really digging or just kind of all time.

[00:49:20] You're like, yes, them. Mine.

[00:49:22] Give me books, movies, TV, anything.

[00:49:26] Mine was a character from the Gilded Age this week

[00:49:28] because I binge that and was obsessed.

[00:49:30] Let's see less.

[00:49:32] I'm terrible with the like pick a character games,

[00:49:36] like especially the one is like who would you cast as your character?

[00:49:39] I like I think it was on a podcast, but they had to like edit out

[00:49:43] that whole question because I was just like, oh, well, I was thinking.

[00:49:48] But I like that question.

[00:49:49] I was like, if anyone ever asked me again about the book boyfriend or

[00:49:54] I would I would pick the love interest in

[00:49:59] Boscoony's Sorry Bro.

[00:50:02] And I'm blanking on the name of the character.

[00:50:05] But I got the book right here.

[00:50:08] I love it when they're that close.

[00:50:09] You're like, hold on. Just let me open this real quick.

[00:50:12] First of all, that's beautiful.

[00:50:14] Yeah.

[00:50:15] Leen Boscoony's Sorry Bro and the love interests.

[00:50:20] Name is Erebuni and Boscoony actually has a new book coming out

[00:50:25] like right now, basically, and she's really good.

[00:50:28] And the the love interest is just she's like that cross between like,

[00:50:35] had I not met Faye, I would have dated wanted to date her slash be her.

[00:50:39] So, oh, yeah.

[00:50:42] She's just cool and confident and like just a really neat character.

[00:50:49] So I definitely book I would recommend books.

[00:50:51] Well, that question is coming.

[00:50:55] Oh, boy.

[00:50:57] You might have to this is where every book movie everything leaves your

[00:51:00] brain. What is the TV show?

[00:51:02] I don't know what that is.

[00:51:03] It's like, have I ever read a book?

[00:51:04] What does that normally have?

[00:51:08] I have mine locked and loaded and I've had to tell Karen's when somebody's

[00:51:11] like, OK, well, what is yours?

[00:51:12] And she's like, I don't know.

[00:51:13] I'm like, I know you're in detail.

[00:51:15] Me anybody who's ever

[00:51:20] I'm a deer.

[00:51:21] I asked the question and I'm a deer in the headlights.

[00:51:23] So yeah, I'm gone.

[00:51:28] Can you even like character?

[00:51:31] You're going to wake up at 2am and be like, guys, I got it.

[00:51:34] I got it.

[00:51:35] She's always accusing me of sleeping in front of the TV and takes pictures.

[00:51:39] And so, you know,

[00:51:42] I'm like, I'm not sleeping.

[00:51:45] My husband does that.

[00:51:46] He's snoring and I'm like, you're asleep.

[00:51:48] I'm not. No, my daughter, too.

[00:51:51] My gosh, this is an epidemic.

[00:51:55] The next year's in front of the TV.

[00:51:57] She had not picked a movie yet.

[00:51:58] Yeah. So the screen is still up with all the options and she's got the

[00:52:01] remote in her band and she's like, I'm going to go to bed.

[00:52:05] And she is dead asleep.

[00:52:07] I took a picture and as soon as I took the picture,

[00:52:10] it was like her subconscious knew and she clicked a button to like start a movie.

[00:52:14] I'm like, you were asleep.

[00:52:16] You were.

[00:52:18] She's like, no, I wasn't.

[00:52:19] You're always awake.

[00:52:21] She's resting her eyes.

[00:52:23] That's right.

[00:52:24] That's it.

[00:52:26] I love it.

[00:52:27] All right. Well, same vein, but switching gears a little bit.

[00:52:30] We know we love your books and your book,

[00:52:33] and we know that we recommend them to our audience.

[00:52:36] But what do you recommend?

[00:52:38] What is like, I think everybody should read this book.

[00:52:40] This author is fantastic.

[00:52:42] Do you have a favorite book, anything like that?

[00:52:44] We always are looking to add to our never ending TBR.

[00:52:49] I just finished No Shelter But The Stars by Virginia Black,

[00:52:55] and it was amazing.

[00:52:57] It's science fiction, which isn't usually my reading genre.

[00:53:02] But when you have a good writer, it doesn't matter whether this is the genre,

[00:53:05] the reader usually reads or not.

[00:53:07] But it's about two women who are enemies based on their political factions

[00:53:13] that they belong to, who get stranded on basically an abandoned planet,

[00:53:18] empty planet, almost no water,

[00:53:20] almost no food, almost no plants,

[00:53:22] and they have to band together to survive.

[00:53:26] It is so beautifully written and the love story between them

[00:53:30] is just like it reached into my heart and grabbed my heart and squeezed it.

[00:53:37] I was just like, oh, my gosh, I love these characters so much.

[00:53:41] And they have to survive and come together

[00:53:44] and try and heal these two warring factions in their universe.

[00:53:50] So really, really good.

[00:53:52] Made Black like an automatic, like,

[00:53:55] I will preorder as soon as one of her books goes online.

[00:54:00] I love that.

[00:54:01] Very nice.

[00:54:02] Well, I like romances that also intersect with cooking or baking.

[00:54:08] And so, you know, I really enjoyed Kisilka Jackson's

[00:54:13] Salt with a Dash of salt and pepper, interracial, male,

[00:54:19] striving, mistakes galore.

[00:54:21] It was really kind of the first male romance that I read.

[00:54:24] And I was like, wow, this is pretty, this is pretty hot, pretty, pretty sexy.

[00:54:29] So I really enjoyed that.

[00:54:30] And just the reading, he does such a great job of bringing his characters to life.

[00:54:37] And I just thought and I had not written any very much when I was reading this.

[00:54:42] But I was like, oh, that could be me.

[00:54:44] I can be in Leskis Dory.

[00:54:45] And it's you now. Yeah.

[00:54:46] And it's you now.

[00:54:48] For food romances, can we interest you in Lauren Cung-Juston?

[00:54:52] Yes. Because her books will leave you starving.

[00:54:55] Yes. Like you cannot read her books without.

[00:54:58] You have to be like, I always joke if you're going to read a Lauren Cung-Juston book,

[00:55:02] you need to take the book, go to a dim sum restaurant and set up for like

[00:55:06] a couple of hours while you're reading, because otherwise you're going to be starving.

[00:55:11] OK. There's no way to read them without eating.

[00:55:14] And then there's also the unfortunate side effects of Heartbreak and Magic

[00:55:19] by Breanne Randall. She talks a lot about food.

[00:55:22] But then at the end of the chapter, there's a recipe.

[00:55:24] I can make grandma's peach pie.

[00:55:29] It's amazing.

[00:55:31] And if you like, listen, there's also a cooking competition romance.

[00:55:37] OK, Alexis Hall, Rosalind Palmer takes the cake and Paris Alex Kort is about to come.

[00:55:43] I love that one too. Oh, yeah.

[00:55:44] I was laughing so hard. It's so good.

[00:55:47] I forgot about that one. Yeah.

[00:55:48] My first time reading Alexis Hall and I was like, this is this is a vibe, guys.

[00:55:53] I'm here for this.

[00:55:54] I know what's going on.

[00:55:56] There is nothing like a book that makes you starving.

[00:55:59] Yes. It's like, oh, why am I not eating exactly what's on this page?

[00:56:04] I'm reading about this book.

[00:56:07] That's the next thing.

[00:56:07] Like we need to figure out how to make that happen.

[00:56:10] You read something and then it just pops up at you.

[00:56:12] It's like a pop up book, but with food or or you turn the page

[00:56:16] and the door dash order places.

[00:56:18] Idea Book.

[00:56:20] Yes, Idea Book.

[00:56:24] Get a little code.

[00:56:25] Yeah. Oh, yes.

[00:56:28] Our number of fans there.

[00:56:30] All right. Love this.

[00:56:31] Love that is where we're all about to be.

[00:56:34] Take my credit card.

[00:56:35] We are all about to be so rich from this idea.

[00:56:40] It was a collaborative effort.

[00:56:41] Yes, I love it.

[00:56:44] OK, so second I stand, I know it hasn't.

[00:56:47] It's not out yet, quite yet.

[00:56:49] But what's coming next?

[00:56:51] Are you guys writing more together?

[00:56:53] Are you writing individually?

[00:56:54] What's the plan?

[00:56:55] Where can I get more cozy spice?

[00:56:58] All right.

[00:56:59] Together.

[00:57:00] The next book is tentatively titled Taste the Love and it's slated to come out.

[00:57:05] Are you giving us a food book?

[00:57:07] Yes.

[00:57:08] Faye is an amazing, amazing cook.

[00:57:12] So it was just perfect to do a food, a food story.

[00:57:16] If this one is a food truck, very successful food

[00:57:20] truck influencer and a very highfalutin eco chef

[00:57:26] with a brick and mortar restaurant.

[00:57:27] And I have forgotten when that is slated to come out.

[00:57:30] Not for a while.

[00:57:31] It's 20 January 26.

[00:57:35] I'm not sure. No, I think it's 25.

[00:57:37] OK, next.

[00:57:38] That's not so bad.

[00:57:39] That's so soon.

[00:57:40] That is so.

[00:57:42] We're going to cover now.

[00:57:43] So that is so exciting.

[00:57:47] You heard it here first, folks.

[00:57:50] It's going to be great.

[00:57:51] And you're having a lot of fun and I'm making recipes

[00:57:55] and taking pictures of the things that creating.

[00:57:57] And so now we just need the QR code.

[00:58:01] Yeah, it is.

[00:58:02] DoorDash to go in there.

[00:58:05] Oh, I love this.

[00:58:06] From your kitchen to our doors.

[00:58:09] That's right.

[00:58:10] Yes.

[00:58:10] If you need if you need taste testers like just just let us know.

[00:58:15] I'm on the way.

[00:58:16] On the way.

[00:58:18] I will jump on a plane.

[00:58:19] I will absolutely.

[00:58:21] It's it's just like a day's drive away.

[00:58:23] I'm I'm in Bay Area, California, so I'm like on my way.

[00:58:27] I'm in Georgia. I'm not close.

[00:58:29] Butterfly.

[00:58:30] It's going to happen.

[00:58:34] Oh, I am so excited.

[00:58:36] This is great.

[00:58:37] So are you going to continue?

[00:58:39] I mean, obviously, you're going to continue writing together,

[00:58:41] but do you have plans to write like solo books in the future or just going to?

[00:58:46] I'm probably my lucky partner.

[00:58:48] Yeah, I mean, I think a different genre for me.

[00:58:52] I think I have a memoir in me down the road somewhere boring, but a memoir.

[00:58:56] But but like not I'm good with the collaboration.

[00:59:00] This is the this is really the next step in my writing career is writing with Faye.

[00:59:06] And it's it's really nice because I think I might have gotten not bored,

[00:59:11] but maybe stalled a little bit.

[00:59:13] This is my ninth book, so I'd written eight on my own.

[00:59:16] And I wanted something new, something different.

[00:59:20] But I love romance.

[00:59:21] I didn't want to switch genres.

[00:59:22] So I think for as long as you are up for the only movie deal.

[00:59:27] You know what I mean?

[00:59:29] Yes, let's do it.

[00:59:30] Hold on. Hold on.

[00:59:32] Manifest here.

[00:59:33] Your manifesto is your idea.

[00:59:35] Dear universe, we're going to have all of the films,

[00:59:39] all of the movies about all of Corellia and Faye's books, shows, movies,

[00:59:44] merch, everything it's going to be on the big screen.

[00:59:47] I would like to have we're going to travel for the premiere.

[00:59:52] I want an official boa like an official boa.

[00:59:58] It's going to be a movie like that.

[00:59:59] Yeah. So let's let's make this happen.

[01:00:02] Universe, listen, we need to take our picture in front of the marquee

[01:00:06] that's that's in the picture on the cover of the book.

[01:00:09] No way.

[01:00:12] The Schnitzer Center at that Portland.

[01:00:14] Oh, my gosh.

[01:00:17] That so much.

[01:00:19] It's going to happen. Yeah.

[01:00:21] Oh, OK.

[01:00:22] Well, we can't let you go without informing you of some some bad news.

[01:00:26] I'm so sorry to tell you.

[01:00:28] But now that you have been on the podcast,

[01:00:30] you are actually legally obligated to come back for all future.

[01:00:33] That's why Corellia is here.

[01:00:34] Oh, yeah.

[01:00:37] It was fine print in white.

[01:00:40] You I will find documents.

[01:00:45] I love it.

[01:00:46] So that means January.

[01:00:48] We'll see you again.

[01:00:50] Ready for it.

[01:00:52] So much fun. Such a treat to talk to you.

[01:00:53] Thank you so much.

[01:00:56] This is so much fun.

[01:00:57] We do have one more thing.

[01:00:58] You have to give Lilla kisses from us.

[01:01:00] Oh, yes. Yes.

[01:01:02] This is it's also another requirement.

[01:01:04] Absolutely.

[01:01:05] And kisses there.

[01:01:07] You had a walk this afternoon.

[01:01:09] You know, one up.

[01:01:10] But you do.

[01:01:12] Oh, my sweetie.

[01:01:18] Like I can't.

[01:01:20] I love her.

[01:01:21] Well, I love her.

[01:01:26] So you call me up, please.

[01:01:30] Oh, you.

[01:01:32] Hey, I love her so much.

[01:01:36] Well, so much for being here, for showing us that sweet girl.

[01:01:41] We love her.

[01:01:42] Everybody, everybody comes out

[01:01:44] listening second night stand is out now when this episode comes out.

[01:01:49] So you can walk into a bookstore and pick it up.

[01:01:51] It's real. Faye.

[01:01:53] Look, I have it in my hand in my hands.

[01:01:57] It's for real.

[01:01:59] And everybody can go get a copy right now.

[01:02:02] Please do. And then come back and let us know how great it is, because

[01:02:07] it's excellent.

[01:02:09] Thank you all so, so much for being here.

[01:02:15] Thank you. We've had so much fun.

[01:02:17] We'll talk to you soon.

[01:02:19] Thank you. Bye. Bye.

[01:02:21] Look at her face. I love her.

[01:02:24] Oh, my gosh.

[01:02:26] I love them both.

[01:02:28] We already loved Coralia.

[01:02:30] Now I got to I think you've met them, right?

[01:02:32] I met them at Simulacan. Yeah.

[01:02:35] And I got to love Faye now.

[01:02:37] I love your bike extension.

[01:02:39] But like they're just absolute goals.

[01:02:42] Just you can just tell not even like they don't even need to talk.

[01:02:46] You can just see how much they love.

[01:02:48] I love. Yeah.

[01:02:49] Respect each other and support each other. Trust.

[01:02:53] Yes. It's it's like it's like instinct for them to be just perfect together.

[01:02:59] I just I love them so much.

[01:03:02] Seriously, this this book, you guys, it's so I know I can't wait to finish it.

[01:03:07] I love it. I cannot wait to finish.

[01:03:09] I read it. I literally read it in a day.

[01:03:10] I was just like, I'm not going anywhere.

[01:03:13] I'm going to read this.

[01:03:13] Nobody bother me. Do what I want.

[01:03:16] Oh, so good. So good.

[01:03:18] That was so much fun.

[01:03:19] I know. OK. Is it time for announcements?

[01:03:21] Announcements.

[01:03:23] OK. Well, first announcement is that this next episode is going to be

[01:03:28] our midseason finale.

[01:03:30] We will be taking a break after next week's episode for I want to say it's like

[01:03:36] 10 weeks, it's about two months.

[01:03:39] We'll be back in August.

[01:03:40] We just really want to go big on celebrating my birthday for.

[01:03:43] I mean, that's just you know, what's funny is that we kind of do.

[01:03:48] We take two months for your birthday and two months for my birthday.

[01:03:52] Kind of like we kind of just really we're really birthday people.

[01:03:55] It just kind of happens that way.

[01:03:58] I'm going to call it intentional, even though it wasn't really intentional,

[01:04:02] but it's totally intentional.

[01:04:04] So we will be taking a couple of months off.

[01:04:09] We need to recuperate.

[01:04:11] Burnout is very real and we love you all.

[01:04:13] We love doing this. But burnout is a real thing.

[01:04:16] We want to read on not a schedule.

[01:04:18] Yeah, we want to read. Yeah.

[01:04:20] Yeah. So we got some things that we've set to the side

[01:04:23] that are on the summer TBR.

[01:04:25] Very excited about.

[01:04:27] But the other announcement is we are going out with a bang.

[01:04:31] OK, because we are bringing back Mr. Robbie Couch himself.

[01:04:36] We're going to talk about another first chance.

[01:04:38] I'm probably going to cry a little bit because I'm sure this book

[01:04:41] is going to break me.

[01:04:43] I just I can feel it. I can feel it.

[01:04:46] I'm not ready, but I'm also totally ready because I'm ready to be heard again.

[01:04:50] Yeah, I'm he's I'm pretty sure he's been taking lessons from Silveira.

[01:04:54] Like, come on. Yeah.

[01:04:57] Oh, I am so excited that he's coming back.

[01:05:00] It's going to be such a blast.

[01:05:02] I can't wait. Not only that.

[01:05:04] Oh, are we talking about that?

[01:05:06] I think that's going to be a separate thing.

[01:05:07] It's not going to be announced.

[01:05:08] It's going to be we can announce it next week because it's not going to be

[01:05:12] next week. I mean, it's going to happen.

[01:05:14] Well, we're going to do the thing next week, but we're going to hold it.

[01:05:17] Oh, I didn't know that. OK.

[01:05:19] Oh, yeah. Yeah, I might have known that.

[01:05:20] I forgot that. It's OK.

[01:05:22] It's been a week. It's it's been several months.

[01:05:25] I'm on people brain.

[01:05:26] Oh, I didn't even mention this and it's not doesn't matter to the thing.

[01:05:30] But I've told you, I think that three migraines since Saturday.

[01:05:33] So I'm on no.

[01:05:35] I was going to say, I'm like, there have been migraines thrown into

[01:05:38] like this week to this whole mix. Yeah. Yeah.

[01:05:41] OK, well, we don't have to announce just have to read it.

[01:05:44] Interview. OK, gotcha.

[01:05:46] I'm caught up. Yeah.

[01:05:47] I'm back up to speed.

[01:05:48] And I think it's time for a spiel.
