[00:00:03] Welcome to The Incoherent Fangirl, where this is the third annual Candy Awards. Yay! I'm Mandy. And I'm Karin. This is crazy. I can't believe it's the end of year three. That's wild. That does not seem right. That, it really does not. That is so bizarre. I don't understand, but here we are. Here we are. Here we are. With our Candy Awards. For those of you who are listening to Candy Awards, we're listening to Candy Awards.
[00:00:31] For joining us for the first time. This is where we do our Superlatives of the Year. We have several categories that we have picked, and we're going to give you our top three of the year. And it's going to be a good time. Just like the Academy Awards. Yes. But more bookish. More fangirly. More fangirly and biased. Oh, so biased. We're so biased. Oh, so biased. Yes. It's a very, very,
[00:01:01] complicated voting system here. We just- I pulled my dogs. Yeah. I looked in my brain
[00:01:10] and remembered a couple things. That's how it worked. Yeah. Okay. So we'll start with the
[00:01:18] visual mediums, I guess. Yeah. Yeah. We skipped these last year because there was a writer's
[00:01:25] So we were standing in solidarity, but that strike is over. So now we can talk about them again. So
[00:01:32] we'll start with movie of the year, Mandy. All right. So what do we do? We do- I think we do
[00:01:38] the nominees first and then the award goes to. Okay. Did we say who's like second and third?
[00:01:45] Did we do the nominees? I don't know. I don't know. I mean- I don't have them that way. I just
[00:01:50] have nominee one, nominee two, nominee three, and like they're not- In order. The award.
[00:01:55] Because I'm just going to read them left to right and I don't want to always give like
[00:01:58] first place is this, you know. That makes sense. So I have like an award column and then nominee
[00:02:04] columns. Okay. All right. So we'll just do nominees and then the award goes to.
[00:02:10] Yeah. Okay. All right. So movie of the year, nominee number one is Wish. Oh, also these are
[00:02:17] not movies, not necessarily movies that came out this year. They are movies that I watched
[00:02:21] for the first time this year. The first time I watched them. So like I've watched Pride and
[00:02:26] Prejudice this year, but I've watched that a lot. So I'm not going to say that one. Okay.
[00:02:30] So the nominees are Wish, The Crow, and Wonka. Oh, okay. And the award goes to Wonka. I don't
[00:02:39] understand the hate it got. I really liked it. You know, I think, I think it's, it's not,
[00:02:44] I think it's Timothee Chalamet hate. I think there's a lot of people. I love him. So yeah,
[00:02:49] I think there are a lot of Chalamet haters in the world for some reason or another. And I don't
[00:02:54] know why. I don't know why. It's like hating Hozier. That man is a fairy. I don't get it.
[00:02:59] But I think that's probably why it got the hate that it did because people are just stupid
[00:03:04] and they don't like him. I don't understand you. I don't like him, but that's fine. I mean,
[00:03:10] you know, you're entitled to your wrong opinion, but you know, yeah. All right. Tell me about your
[00:03:17] movie of the year. Okay. So I may have cheated a little bit because one of these is a series,
[00:03:25] like, like a franchise. That's what, that's what they're called in movies. See, I'm always
[00:03:30] thinking bookish. So one of these is a franchise and then the other ones are just straight movies.
[00:03:35] Okay. So nominee one is Quiz Lady. Nominee two is Barbie and nominee three is the Scream franchise.
[00:03:43] I know you're making that out this year. I think I watched, I don't know if it was this year. I
[00:03:48] think I watched it this year. Oh yeah. You watched it later, right? I watched it later. I didn't watch
[00:03:53] it in theaters. Yeah. Okay. I think it was, I think it came. I think because it was,
[00:03:59] Barbenheimer was over the, I want to say over the summer and it wasn't this summer. Okay.
[00:04:04] I don't think so. I was like, overlook Barbie because Barbie and Oppenheimer would have been.
[00:04:08] I think it was last year. I could, I'm going to Google it. Okay. Well, you do that.
[00:04:15] I will tell you that the award goes to Barbie. Yes. Because I mean, I mean, yeah. Hi Barbie.
[00:04:25] It came out in 2023. Okay. See, yeah. I want, I know I watched it later. I just. July 2023. Yeah. See,
[00:04:33] we were right. Summer of last year. I was like, I know I did not forget Barbie.
[00:04:38] No, these were just, this is what I watched this year. And in my defense, I also kind of went through
[00:04:45] a list and I don't, I didn't remember most of the movies that I watched on the list. So obviously it
[00:04:52] was Barbie. I like Googled movies that came out and like, we saw Ghostbusters in the theater, but,
[00:04:58] and it was okay. And we saw, I, I sat in long legs, but I was listening to Throne of Glass the whole time
[00:05:09] with my eyes closed. And then. Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. What? Mandy. What? Deadpool and Wolverine.
[00:05:18] I didn't really care that much about Deadpool. I also was going to say, I saw It Ends With Us,
[00:05:23] but it had a lot of flaws. Yeah. I really loved Deadpool and Wolverine and I had forgotten about
[00:05:30] it until right this moment because I was like, how is it possible that I didn't watch a single
[00:05:35] decent Marvel movie? Yeah. But Deadpool and Wolverine. You can add it. You can have four
[00:05:41] nominees for that one. Yeah. We'll be there, but it's still Barbie. It's still going to be Barbie.
[00:05:45] It's still Barbie. But Deadpool and Wolverine is a good addition to my nominee pool. Yeah. It may be
[00:05:50] that I'm over Deadpool and Wolverine because Josh has watched it a few times because he'll like turn
[00:05:54] it on and then he'll fall asleep. That's fair. And then he'll get up and do something else and
[00:05:58] then he'll start where he fell asleep. And, and so I'm like, and then he watched the others too.
[00:06:02] That's fair. And I'm like, that makes a difference. That makes a difference. Yeah. Yeah. I've seen it
[00:06:07] the one time and it was a lovely experience. I had so much fun with it. Even though, as I said,
[00:06:15] my theater was the worst. I hated all of them. Mine was too. He took us to the, the, oh, that's right.
[00:06:22] The recliners, like commoners. Oh my God. I love it. I was crushed up. Do you want to tell me about
[00:06:29] your show of the year? Oh yes. I, I re I'm really solid on these, these nominees. I feel pretty good
[00:06:37] about this. I feel like it's a good, good pool that I have. Yeah. Me too. Nominee number one is
[00:06:45] beef. Nominee number two is low key. Nominee number three is Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
[00:06:51] And the award goes to Percy Jackson. I mean, I loved that. I loved it. I loved it. I loved it so much.
[00:06:59] I, so good. It was so well done. It was so well done. I do want to give like an honorable mention
[00:07:06] to Agatha all along, but it's not all out yet. So could not judge it. How do we decide? Yeah.
[00:07:12] Yeah. So Percy Jackson was just perfection. I loved it so much. Tell me yours. All right. Mine goes,
[00:07:21] my nominees are Nobody Wants This. Have you watched it yet? Cause I binged it.
[00:07:26] Not yet. Not yet. Oh, it's so good. The Gen Z is going to find out. They're going to find out
[00:07:30] about Adam Brody. Oh, bless them. And they're going to be all like we didn't know when we were 12.
[00:07:35] Right. Oh, it's just like, it's just like when all, all of them were like, there's this new dance
[00:07:41] and this new song from Deadpool and Wolverine. Like no baby. Yeah. No baby. Or when I love it
[00:07:46] because I love having the same taste in music, but now one of the twins is like, Hozier's so fine.
[00:07:50] And I'm like, Hozier's been fine. Yeah. Since you were born, that man's been fine. Like you're new
[00:07:56] here. Yeah. Get behind me. I love it. I love it. Okay. So nobody wants this. It's very good.
[00:08:02] Very quick because it's only like 25 minute episodes and there's like eight of them. I think
[00:08:07] Percy Jackson and the Olympians and the Gilded Age. Oh yeah. I forgot about that. It's been a while.
[00:08:15] Goes to the Gilded Age. I miss it every day. I would rather watch it than Bridgerton even.
[00:08:23] It is so, so, so good. And one of my, like, it's not, it didn't make the category this year
[00:08:31] because it's a spoiler, but they like my, a ship of the year would have been a couple from the Gilded
[00:08:37] Age. Yeah. The Gilded Age is going to come up again. Don't you worry. I'm sure. I'm sure.
[00:08:45] So yeah, the Gilded Age. Everybody go watch it. Love it. Love it. Okay. Now we're going to dive
[00:08:51] deeper into, into more bookish world. Bookish world. Though there might be some appearances. Yeah.
[00:08:58] From. There might be some appearances from movies and TV. Okay. So tell me your cliffhanger of the
[00:09:05] year. Okay. This was really hard. Okay. This was really hard for me. Probably because I have the
[00:09:12] memory of a goldfish. So I couldn't tell you how half the books I read ended. Right. Right. Okay. So
[00:09:18] the nominees are Quicksilver by Callie Hart, All This Twisted Glory by Tahira Mafi, or Empire of
[00:09:25] Storms by Sarah J. Maas. And that one is just because if you know, you know, and I read Throne
[00:09:30] of Glass again this year. And if you know, that is one of the most insane cliffhangers of all time,
[00:09:36] the most upsetting for reasons. Yeah. So the award goes to All This Twisted Glory by Tahira Mafi though,
[00:09:44] because I'm still reeling and I'm like, I don't like waiting. I'm dying. But at least it wasn't a
[00:09:51] trilogy. At least there is more coming. And she wasn't like, no, we're done. Yeah. That would be,
[00:09:59] that sounds like it would be miserable. I couldn't do it. Yeah. I could not do it. That's fair. What
[00:10:04] about you? Tell me about your cliffhanger of the year. Okay. My nominees are The Last Blood Carver
[00:10:10] by Vanessa L. Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross. Because I did read that this year or this round.
[00:10:18] I read it last year, but it's this round because that was in December when I read it. I read it.
[00:10:24] I read it after I finished last season. Right before Ruthless Vows. So Divine Rivals. And I wrote down
[00:10:31] something else, but now I'm thinking I have a different answer. Okay. Which is If I Have to
[00:10:38] Be Haunted by Miranda Sun, because I just remembered the ending of that and I'm still upset.
[00:10:43] But my cliffhanger of the year award goes to The Last Blood Carver by Vanessa L. I finished that book
[00:10:50] and immediately went online to see when the next one was coming. First, first I went to see if there was
[00:10:57] a next one, because if there wasn't, I was going to scream. Second, I went to see when the next one
[00:11:04] was coming and it was literally a year from the day that I finished reading it. Oh, and I was like,
[00:11:12] so upset. I wanted to like scream and cry, but I couldn't because my daughter was asleep next to me.
[00:11:18] So yeah, that that was that was no fun. No fun at all. But it's really good. I really love that book
[00:11:26] so much. So I'm very excited for the sequel. But that cliffhanger did not expect it.
[00:11:33] Nightmare stuff. I'm not well. I'm not well. Well, would talking about your sequel of the year make
[00:11:39] it better? Maybe because one of these sequels made a different cliffhanger feel better.
[00:11:49] Okay, so my nominees are The Hunting Moon by Susan Dennard, Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross,
[00:11:56] and A Curse for True Love by Stephanie Garber. And the award goes to A Curse for True Love by
[00:12:02] Stephanie Garber. Yeah, I feel like you're gonna have to. After The Ballad of Never After,
[00:12:08] are you kidding me? Like, to be able to finish that book and then follow it up with something
[00:12:14] that meets your expectations. Yeah, that's hard. It's a tall order and she managed it like I
[00:12:21] it was great. Yeah. Yeah. So Curse for True Love for sure. I like it. Your turn. All right.
[00:12:29] Mine are not like book two, but they're just like the next installment. So I have The Whispering
[00:12:35] Night by Susan Dennard, Infinity Kings by Adam Silvera, or Apprentice to the Villain by Hannah
[00:12:40] Nicole Mayer. Okay. And the award goes to I'm gonna give it to Apprentice to the Villain because
[00:12:46] Assistant to the Villain had such a slow buildup and this one was more action-packed and so it kept
[00:12:53] pace and you could see her growth as a writer. Yeah. And yeah, I really like I really enjoyed that.
[00:13:01] It's a good follow-up. It's a good follow-up for sure. And I think that's what you would just
[00:13:06] freaking kiss already. That's what you want from a sequel. You want it to build off of the previous
[00:13:12] book and also be better in a way. You know what I mean? Yeah, absolutely. I agree with you. Next
[00:13:19] category. I hope I have these in the same order as you because last year I did not because I was dumb.
[00:13:25] Next, I have Ship of the Year. Yes, that's what I have. Okay. So the nominees are Evie and the Villain
[00:13:32] from Apprentice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Mayer because that's Ben Barnes.
[00:13:39] Aliza and Cyrus from This Woven Kingdom by Tahita Mafi. Well, more on that later. And then
[00:13:46] later categories. And then I can't remember if it's T-Young or Tai Young and Sora from Five Broken
[00:13:52] Blades by May Mai Corland. Every time I say it one way, I feel like it's the wrong way.
[00:14:01] She specifically said, we asked her about it or I asked her about it and she was like,
[00:14:05] I don't care because it's a pen name. So whatever works for you is fine.
[00:14:10] I'll go with Mai Corland. Yeah. She said, technically speaking, it should be Mai, but I don't care.
[00:14:17] Okay. So I'll go with Mai. So Tai Young and Sora. Because remember, he was like the secretly pining
[00:14:24] and we know how much I love that. Yes. Yes. But speaking of secretly pining, the award goes to
[00:14:30] Aliza and Cyrus from This Woven Kingdom by Tahita Mafi because I'm so sick for this man and her.
[00:14:37] Aliza's badass, but Cyrus is the Aaron Warner of the This Woven Kingdom series. So what do you want
[00:14:45] from me? I'm just a girl. That's fair. You're just a girl. I am just a girl. You're just a girl.
[00:14:50] It's fair. What about you? Tell me about your ship of the year.
[00:14:54] Okay. So my nominees are Ophelia and Blackwell from Phantasma, Sadie and Jacob from The Second
[00:15:02] Chance Year by Melissa Wisner. I don't know how to pronounce it. I'm so sorry. And Iris and Roman
[00:15:08] from The Letters of Enchantment series by Rebecca Ross. I'm so mad that you got to read that this year.
[00:15:14] I mean, technically, I read it in December, November of last year, but it counts. Yeah. And my ship of
[00:15:22] year is Iris and Roman because I mean, how could it not be? I mean, honestly, do I have to explain if I
[00:15:30] have to explain, then you have not read The Letters of Enchantment series. Right now, like,
[00:15:36] just go read it. Go read it. You'll understand. I should do a reread.
[00:15:41] So good. So good. Yeah. Love it. All right. What about your best side character of the year?
[00:15:48] This one, I feel like none of my nominees is going to be a surprise to anybody
[00:15:55] because of how much I am gone for these boys.
[00:15:59] Yeah.
[00:16:00] Yeah.
[00:16:01] Nominee number one is Cologne Warren from the Red Queen series.
[00:16:05] My baby.
[00:16:06] Nominee number two is Andrew Trollin from the Raw Breaker series. And number three is Tobias
[00:16:12] Bexley from Rufus Smiles because he's only in the second one by Rebecca Ross. And the first
[00:16:19] two are obviously by Victoria Aveyard. I keep forgetting. Maybe some people don't know what
[00:16:23] I'm talking about.
[00:16:24] Yeah. Yeah. You should read better books if you don't know what she's talking about,
[00:16:28] but we'll allow it. Honestly.
[00:16:29] We've got a break now.
[00:16:30] Yeah. You've got time.
[00:16:32] Catch up.
[00:16:32] We've given you many recommendations. And my side character of the year is Cologne Warren
[00:16:39] from the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard.
[00:16:42] You're such a baby angel.
[00:16:43] I am. Just, I love this man so much. I love this man so much. I would burn the world down
[00:16:50] for him. My sweet baby angel. I love him. I love him so much. So there was, there was
[00:16:56] no other choice. Andrea is a very, very close second though, because Andrea is like, Andrea
[00:17:01] to me is like the Cologne of the Realm Breaker series. So I'm like Victoria Aveyard, if there's
[00:17:08] a side character that Victoria Aveyard writes, it's, I'm probably in love with it.
[00:17:12] That's my bae.
[00:17:13] That's, that's it. So yeah. What about, side note, my notes, I didn't notice this until
[00:17:20] just now when I was trying to read it. Auto-corrected Andrea to angry.
[00:17:24] Not angry, Trelland.
[00:17:30] Anyways, that's not important. I just thought it was funny. Tell me about yours.
[00:17:36] You're going to laugh so hard. My nominees for best side character are Ty Young from Five
[00:17:42] Broken Braids by, Braids. I can't talk and your computer can't write. Five Broken Blades
[00:17:51] by Mike Orland. Prudencia from Infinity Kings by Adam Silvera, our Infinity Reapers, Infinity
[00:17:58] Sun.
[00:17:59] The Infinity Cycle.
[00:18:01] And Andrew Trelland from Fate Breaker, Rome Breaker, Blade Breaker by Victoria Aveyard.
[00:18:06] And the award goes to Andrew Trelland. I mean, he's just such a treasure, okay? I can't
[00:18:15] help it.
[00:18:16] Love him. Just, Andrew is just, ugh.
[00:18:18] My face hurts thinking about Andrew.
[00:18:21] I love him so much. Yeah.
[00:18:24] Victoria Aveyard knows how to write a side character. Words are hard right now, guys.
[00:18:30] Yeah.
[00:18:31] Yeah.
[00:18:31] Okay. Speaking of, we're going to move on to main character of the year. Tell me, tell
[00:18:38] me, tell me.
[00:18:39] This should come as no surprise to anyone on this earth, okay? Nominees are Evie from Apprentice
[00:18:46] of the Villain by Hannah Nicole Mayer, Aelin Galathinius from Throne of Glass by Sarah J.
[00:18:51] Maas, and Ophelia from Phantasma by Kaylee Smith. If it was not Aelin Ashriver Whitethorn
[00:18:58] Galathinius, I, it's not me.
[00:19:01] Yeah.
[00:19:02] I'm an alien in a skin suit. I would die for her, okay? I would die for my queen. So,
[00:19:09] it's Aelin. It's always going to be Aelin. Any year that I read Throne of Glass, in any
[00:19:14] capacity, it's going to be Aelin.
[00:19:16] I'm here for that. I'm here for that.
[00:19:18] I'm ready for you to be here for it and really understand. And really understand me, okay?
[00:19:23] Get there. Next month. November. November, remember? We made a rule.
[00:19:28] Remember, we're going, we're doing it.
[00:19:31] Give yourself the birthday gift of...
[00:19:33] Gotta break. Gotta break from the podcast. So, it's...
[00:19:37] You know, November is like next week.
[00:19:39] I know. I know. That's wild. Happy birth month to me.
[00:19:43] I'm just not going to do it now.
[00:19:45] It will. It will. There it is.
[00:19:48] Okay. My nominees are Rooney from Red String Theory by Lauren K. Jessen. Ophelia from Phantasma
[00:19:56] by Kaylee Smith. And this one will come as a bit of a surprise, I think. But it's specifically
[00:20:01] because of this character, the way this character is written. Brighton Ray from the Infinity
[00:20:05] Cycle series by Adam Silvera.
[00:20:07] Oh, I didn't hate Brighton.
[00:20:09] People have strong feelings about Brighton.
[00:20:12] Yeah.
[00:20:13] But I just think that means that he...
[00:20:15] He's well-written.
[00:20:16] Yeah.
[00:20:16] Really well-written. Which is why he is my main character of the year.
[00:20:20] Because I just... He just was so... Like, he's so well-written. Like, he's written in a way
[00:20:25] that you're supposed to be angry with him. You're supposed to dislike him.
[00:20:29] But you also love him.
[00:20:30] Also understand where he's coming from.
[00:20:32] Like, he's so flawed. And that's the point.
[00:20:36] You're watching someone else live your dream.
[00:20:39] Yeah.
[00:20:39] And the thing that you wanted that they didn't want and got handed to them.
[00:20:42] Yep.
[00:20:42] You just...
[00:20:43] And it's human nature.
[00:20:44] You get it.
[00:20:45] It's human reaction.
[00:20:47] He's so, so well-written. Adam killed it with this character. And I just think that he
[00:20:52] deserves to have the number one spot somewhere.
[00:20:56] That's...
[00:20:56] Because...
[00:20:56] Yeah.
[00:20:57] Because he really, like...
[00:20:58] Man.
[00:20:59] Man, does he go through it.
[00:21:01] And man, do people hate him.
[00:21:02] And it's just...
[00:21:03] I get...
[00:21:04] I understand the hate.
[00:21:06] But I also understand where Brighton is coming from.
[00:21:09] And so, therefore, I understand Brighton as a character.
[00:21:13] And I think that makes him stand out.
[00:21:17] So, yeah.
[00:21:18] Well, speaking of challenging characters, do you want to tell me about your best villain
[00:21:23] or antagonist of the year?
[00:21:25] Okay.
[00:21:26] My nominees are Erda from the Realm Breaker series by Victoria Aviard.
[00:21:32] Jax, Prince of Hearts from A Curse for True Love by Stephanie Garber.
[00:21:36] Oh, I love it.
[00:21:36] My baby.
[00:21:37] And it's a spoiler if I say who it is, but the villain...
[00:21:41] I have a spoiler one, too.
[00:21:42] The villain from The Last Blood Carver by Vanessa Lay.
[00:21:46] I...
[00:21:46] I...
[00:21:48] Unwell.
[00:21:49] I'm unwell.
[00:21:50] And clearly, that means that the villain from The Last Blood Carver is my villain slash
[00:21:57] antagonist of the year.
[00:21:58] I just...
[00:21:59] I was...
[00:22:00] I...
[00:22:01] Yeah.
[00:22:01] No.
[00:22:01] I was not prepared.
[00:22:03] Listen, I read this book, I want to say in March.
[00:22:05] And the fact that I still remember something from March means something.
[00:22:11] Says a lot.
[00:22:11] Because I don't remember anything.
[00:22:15] So...
[00:22:16] Yeah.
[00:22:17] Yeah.
[00:22:17] Yeah.
[00:22:17] So that...
[00:22:18] I don't blame you.
[00:22:18] That's my answer.
[00:22:20] Tell me yours without spoilers.
[00:22:23] Um...
[00:22:23] Mine is Liberty, California from One of Our Kind by Nicola Yoon.
[00:22:29] Mm-hmm.
[00:22:30] The spoiler villain from Lore of the Wilds by Annalise Brana.
[00:22:34] Mm-hmm.
[00:22:34] And Maeve from Throne of Glass.
[00:22:36] And I'm going to give it to the villain from Lore of the Wilds because it's upsetting.
[00:22:40] Mm-hmm.
[00:22:41] It's upsetting.
[00:22:43] And you can kind of feel it coming, but at the same time, it is like...
[00:22:47] Why?
[00:22:49] Yeah.
[00:22:50] Yeah.
[00:22:50] It's a very well-written story, but it's so upsetting.
[00:22:54] The way that you're describing this just makes me flashback to Firekeeper's Daughter, which is...
[00:22:59] Yes, that's exactly what I thought about when it's like...
[00:23:02] You don't expect...
[00:23:03] Out of everything and out of everybody.
[00:23:05] Out of everybody, why did it have to be you?
[00:23:08] Yeah.
[00:23:08] Yeah.
[00:23:09] And how?
[00:23:09] And just...
[00:23:10] It's...
[00:23:10] It's just...
[00:23:11] Yeah.
[00:23:12] Okay.
[00:23:13] I'm very excited to read this book.
[00:23:15] Oh, it's so good.
[00:23:16] You should.
[00:23:17] I'm so excited.
[00:23:17] You absolutely should.
[00:23:18] Yes.
[00:23:18] Okay.
[00:23:19] Oh, my A-word was talking to me.
[00:23:21] Oh.
[00:23:22] She said, I'm not quite sure how to help you with that.
[00:23:24] Oh, well, there's no help in us.
[00:23:26] I don't think she's listening anymore.
[00:23:26] There's no help for us.
[00:23:27] There's no help in us, Alex.
[00:23:28] Sorry.
[00:23:29] All right.
[00:23:31] Well, we are going...
[00:23:33] It's good that we're going to this next one because honestly, sometimes the villain
[00:23:37] or antagonist can also be a fictional boyfriend.
[00:23:41] So this...
[00:23:42] Tell me your fictional boyfriend of the year in a year where you did not read Aaron Warner.
[00:23:49] I know.
[00:23:50] Okay.
[00:23:50] And I even got creative.
[00:23:53] Okay.
[00:23:53] And I did not put Lorican Salvatare or Adian Ashriver or Kale or Dorian on here.
[00:24:01] Okay.
[00:24:01] I didn't put anybody from Throne of Glass because I thought I would try to be fair to everyone
[00:24:05] else.
[00:24:05] They will always have my heart.
[00:24:07] I was not fair.
[00:24:08] They will always have my heart.
[00:24:10] Okay.
[00:24:10] The awards go...
[00:24:12] Or the nominees are...
[00:24:13] Sorry.
[00:24:13] I'm flustered thinking about these fictional men.
[00:24:17] Okay.
[00:24:17] The nominees are Larry Russell from The Gilded Age.
[00:24:21] Because of the dimples.
[00:24:22] Oh, my God.
[00:24:23] He's so sweet and precious.
[00:24:27] And then Cyrus from This Woven Kingdom by Tahita Moth.
[00:24:31] And then Blackwell from Phantasma by Kaylee Smith.
[00:24:34] I didn't read Aaron Warner this year, but I kind of did.
[00:24:36] Because we've got Cyrus, my secretly pining, sweet little tortured angel.
[00:24:45] Aaron Warner in a Persian myth.
[00:24:48] So...
[00:24:49] I'm not surprised.
[00:24:50] This is my shocked face.
[00:24:50] Go into Cyrus.
[00:24:52] That is what it is.
[00:24:54] This is my shocked face.
[00:24:56] Yeah.
[00:24:57] All right.
[00:24:57] Tell me about yours.
[00:24:58] All right.
[00:24:58] My nominees are, to nobody's surprise, Roman C. Kit from Divine Rivals, the series by Rebecca
[00:25:05] Ross.
[00:25:06] Killoran Warren from the Red Queen series by Victoria Aviard.
[00:25:09] And Andrew Trellin from the Realm Breaker series by Victoria Aviard.
[00:25:13] I mean...
[00:25:14] I mean...
[00:25:15] Was I really going to pick...
[00:25:16] I mean, if you're on brand.
[00:25:17] Would I really pick anybody else?
[00:25:20] No.
[00:25:20] Would I really...
[00:25:21] I don't think that I could.
[00:25:22] I...
[00:25:23] Yeah.
[00:25:23] I don't think I can.
[00:25:24] The fact that I read Killoran and Andrew in the same year is just really...
[00:25:30] That's tough.
[00:25:31] It's lovely, but it's also very rude of me.
[00:25:34] Yeah.
[00:25:34] Why?
[00:25:35] Why was I...
[00:25:35] Why did I do this to myself?
[00:25:37] Because I hadn't met you when Red Queen was coming out and, like, getting popularity and
[00:25:43] ending.
[00:25:44] So I didn't know to tell you to read them.
[00:25:47] That's fair.
[00:25:47] That's fair.
[00:25:48] But that just means that I got to love them together.
[00:25:52] Yeah.
[00:25:53] Which is...
[00:25:53] However, all that said, I think it has to go to Roman.
[00:25:57] But I mean...
[00:25:58] I mean...
[00:25:58] Yeah.
[00:25:59] Yeah.
[00:26:00] You know?
[00:26:00] I would choose Roman over those two.
[00:26:02] You get it.
[00:26:03] As much as I love them.
[00:26:04] Yeah.
[00:26:04] I love...
[00:26:04] I love them.
[00:26:06] I love them so much.
[00:26:08] But...
[00:26:08] The devotion.
[00:26:10] But Roman.
[00:26:11] But Roman.
[00:26:13] Yeah.
[00:26:13] But Roman.
[00:26:14] The ending of Divine Rivals told me everything I need to know.
[00:26:18] That's...
[00:26:19] Everything.
[00:26:20] I specifically wrote Roman from Divine Rivals.
[00:26:23] Yeah.
[00:26:23] With that scene in mind.
[00:26:25] Obviously, he's from the series.
[00:26:27] But, like...
[00:26:27] Yeah.
[00:26:29] Yeah.
[00:26:29] So, I mean...
[00:26:31] I love Killorn.
[00:26:32] I love Andri to death.
[00:26:34] To pieces.
[00:26:35] I love them.
[00:26:35] But just Roman...
[00:26:37] He's Hozier-coded.
[00:26:38] Okay.
[00:26:39] It's Roman.
[00:26:39] If you love any songs by Hozier, Roman C. Kit.
[00:26:43] Roman C. Kit, man.
[00:26:45] Love him.
[00:26:45] All right.
[00:26:45] All right.
[00:26:46] Tell me about your arc of the year.
[00:26:49] This one...
[00:26:50] This is such a hard one.
[00:26:50] Yeah.
[00:26:51] This one is hard.
[00:26:51] This one is hard because I want to be like...
[00:26:55] I want it to be like these were the best ones that I read.
[00:26:59] But also, I want to be like, okay, but I got these ones.
[00:27:04] Yeah.
[00:27:04] Like, we got some ones that were just like, oh, holy shit.
[00:27:08] Yeah.
[00:27:08] Um, so, I kind of went with a combination of the two.
[00:27:15] So, my nominees are The Breakup Tour by Emily Wiberly and Austin Siegman Broke Up.
[00:27:21] Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross.
[00:27:23] And what is the third book?
[00:27:26] Is it Fate Breaker?
[00:27:27] Fate Breaker.
[00:27:28] Fate Breaker is the third book.
[00:27:28] Fate Breaker by Victoria Adiard.
[00:27:30] Because, I mean, we got Fate Breaker.
[00:27:33] That's true.
[00:27:34] Before anybody else.
[00:27:36] Yeah, when I made my list.
[00:27:38] And also, there weren't arcs for this book.
[00:27:41] Like, we got to read it before.
[00:27:44] So, yeah.
[00:27:45] That was why it's on my list.
[00:27:47] Which, I mean, it was also excellent.
[00:27:50] Yeah.
[00:27:50] But it also got pushed in there because, like, holy shit.
[00:27:54] I have Fate Breaker in my hands.
[00:27:57] In my Kindle.
[00:27:58] Yeah.
[00:27:58] Yeah.
[00:27:59] Like, that was wild.
[00:28:00] But I think Ruthless Vows.
[00:28:04] Yeah.
[00:28:05] Ruthless Vows inches it out.
[00:28:07] Because what?
[00:28:08] It's got both, right?
[00:28:09] Ruthless Vows was, oh my god, we have this ahead of everybody else.
[00:28:15] This is, this is like.
[00:28:16] I think we got it in, like, October.
[00:28:17] And I read it before the season ended because I already had this.
[00:28:21] Yes.
[00:28:21] We, yeah.
[00:28:22] Cliffhanger in my brain.
[00:28:23] Right.
[00:28:24] We, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:28:25] We got it before the season ended.
[00:28:27] I just happened to read it afterwards.
[00:28:28] Yeah.
[00:28:29] Okay.
[00:28:29] But, yeah, it was a combination of this is, this is so good.
[00:28:34] This is such a great follow-up.
[00:28:36] And also, holy shit, they're not doing, like, I went on NetGalley.
[00:28:42] There was two reviews and one of them was you.
[00:28:44] Like, they didn't do arcs for Ruthless Vows.
[00:28:48] So that is one of my greatest.
[00:28:50] How we got that is still, like.
[00:28:52] I mean, so that it had, there was no chance that anything else was going to be on this.
[00:28:59] Yeah.
[00:28:59] On this.
[00:29:00] Yeah.
[00:29:01] As my, as my number one.
[00:29:02] If, you know, so.
[00:29:03] It just, it, tell me yours.
[00:29:06] Okay.
[00:29:07] I just went with books that I read and really liked that were arcs because I'm lazy and I
[00:29:13] got tired last night.
[00:29:14] So, the nominees are Under Lock and Key by Lana Ferguson, Phantasma by Kaylee Smith, and
[00:29:22] Spell Strings and Forgotten Things by Brianne Randall.
[00:29:25] And I'm going to give the award to Spell Strings and Forgotten Things by Brianne Randall
[00:29:29] because it's like a love letter to fangirls and a love letter to Loki fans and Pride and
[00:29:34] Prejudice fans and Practical Magic fans and I'm all of the above.
[00:29:38] I was like a love letter to Mandy is what you're saying.
[00:29:43] It felt like a love letter to me and yeah, I really liked it.
[00:29:49] So, I went with those strings and forgotten things.
[00:29:51] I love that.
[00:29:52] I love that.
[00:29:53] Okay.
[00:29:54] Next up, debut of the year.
[00:29:56] I, uh, oh, I feel like I'm going to be wrong in these, but I think they're all debuts.
[00:30:00] So, don't tell me.
[00:30:02] I went with, not books that debuted this year, but books that I read that were the author's
[00:30:09] debut book.
[00:30:10] Well, that's what I'm saying.
[00:30:10] It may not be their debut.
[00:30:12] They could have an indie book somewhere that I don't know about.
[00:30:15] Oh, got it.
[00:30:16] Okay.
[00:30:16] So, I'm going, um, Lore of the Wilds by Annalise Verana, which my thing corrected to Saran.
[00:30:23] I just noticed that.
[00:30:25] No, Annalise Verana.
[00:30:26] How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kwong.
[00:30:28] And How to Piss Off Men by Kyle Pru, which is not his, it's not, it's his, uh, debut in
[00:30:34] the trad pub world.
[00:30:35] Trad pub debut.
[00:30:36] Yeah.
[00:30:36] It counts.
[00:30:37] It counts.
[00:30:37] It's a debut.
[00:30:38] It's a debut.
[00:30:39] Yeah.
[00:30:40] Yeah.
[00:30:40] Yeah.
[00:30:40] And the award goes to Lore of the Wilds by Annalise Verana.
[00:30:45] It was so good.
[00:30:47] I love it.
[00:30:48] It was so good.
[00:30:49] And, and the funniest thing happened to me with it.
[00:30:51] I was like trying to get it on NetGalley, trying to get it on NetGalley.
[00:30:54] I didn't get it.
[00:30:55] My target had one left when I got off work that day.
[00:30:59] And I'm driving there.
[00:31:00] I stop at a red light.
[00:31:01] I check my email and I get it approved on our list day.
[00:31:06] I remember that.
[00:31:07] I remember that.
[00:31:07] Yeah.
[00:31:07] It pissed me off.
[00:31:08] It was fine though.
[00:31:09] I was going to buy it anyways.
[00:31:10] Right.
[00:31:10] I was like, I could be home reading this now.
[00:31:12] Right.
[00:31:13] Right.
[00:31:14] All right.
[00:31:15] Tell me about your debut of the year.
[00:31:17] Okay.
[00:31:17] So my nominees are How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kwong, The Last Blood Carver by Vanessa
[00:31:23] Lay, and Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.
[00:31:26] I mean, I couldn't not throw that in there.
[00:31:28] Yeah.
[00:31:29] It's such a, it's such a, how do you debut with Red Queen?
[00:31:33] Yeah.
[00:31:34] Like, my God.
[00:31:36] But I have to give it to The Last Blood Carver by Vanessa Lay.
[00:31:40] This book, this book has not left my brain.
[00:31:43] I'm, I, I'm just, I'm dying.
[00:31:46] I'm dying for March.
[00:31:48] Dying.
[00:31:49] I had a friend who was at New York Comic Con this past weekend, and they were doing, if
[00:31:54] you bought the book, the, the finished copy of book one, you get the bound manuscript
[00:31:59] of book two.
[00:32:00] And I sent her right over there and they were out.
[00:32:04] And I was so upset, but it is what it is.
[00:32:07] That is, I'm just, I'm so excited for March.
[00:32:10] I can't, I can't.
[00:32:11] I'm, I'm, I'm.
[00:32:12] Not too much longer at least.
[00:32:14] So close.
[00:32:15] But yeah, this book, it, it was not at all.
[00:32:18] I, it just, it hit me.
[00:32:20] It just was so unexpected how much I loved it.
[00:32:23] And I just cannot stop thinking about it.
[00:32:26] Yeah.
[00:32:27] No, I don't blame you.
[00:32:28] It had to take first place.
[00:32:30] All right.
[00:32:31] You're traditionally published.
[00:32:32] Traditionally published book of the year.
[00:32:34] Okay.
[00:32:35] I am looking at my list and I have them like listed.
[00:32:41] And so I'm like, did I put this in the correct order?
[00:32:44] Oh no.
[00:32:46] You have to pick.
[00:32:46] You can pick now.
[00:32:47] I can pick now.
[00:32:48] I mean, you can't see my list.
[00:32:49] Okay.
[00:32:50] So my traditionally published book nominees are The Breakup Tour by Emily Wiberly and Austin
[00:32:57] Siegman Broca, Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross, and The Last Blood Carver by Vanessa Lee.
[00:33:02] I feel like it's kind of a tie.
[00:33:06] Yeah.
[00:33:06] That's going to be a hard one.
[00:33:07] But I think I have to give it to The Breakup Tour.
[00:33:12] I think I have to give it to The Breakup Tour.
[00:33:14] It was the first book that I read in 2024.
[00:33:17] I literally read it on New Year's Day in one sitting.
[00:33:22] It literally took my breath away.
[00:33:24] I don't know what about it.
[00:33:26] It just like, I would read a chapter and then I would have to stop and like dissect it.
[00:33:32] And I had to think about it.
[00:33:33] And I don't know what it was about this specific book, but it just like hit me in just such
[00:33:39] a strong way that I was just, I think that puts it in number one for me for the year.
[00:33:45] Yeah.
[00:33:45] Okay.
[00:33:46] Yeah.
[00:33:47] Tell me yours.
[00:33:47] All right.
[00:33:48] My nominees are How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang, Funny Story by Emily Henry,
[00:33:53] and Another First Chance by Robbie Couch.
[00:33:55] And the award goes to How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang.
[00:33:59] I mean, it was so well written and such opposite of the path I would be able to take.
[00:34:06] But like, I also could understand, which is like shows good writing.
[00:34:12] Right.
[00:34:13] Yeah.
[00:34:13] Yeah.
[00:34:14] Fantastic.
[00:34:15] Fantastic.
[00:34:15] Fantastic job.
[00:34:16] Excellent.
[00:34:16] All right.
[00:34:17] We're almost done.
[00:34:19] Indie published book of the year.
[00:34:21] All right.
[00:34:22] My nominees are A Captured Cauldron by R.K.
[00:34:25] Ashwick.
[00:34:26] Angels and Exorcists by Finley Ray.
[00:34:28] And Between Fate and Failure by Amber D.
[00:34:31] Lewis.
[00:34:32] We know I have to give it to Amber D.
[00:34:35] Lewis.
[00:34:35] And Between Fate and Failure.
[00:34:37] I mean, she gave us bash.
[00:34:38] Yeah.
[00:34:39] Yeah.
[00:34:40] So, I mean.
[00:34:42] Yeah.
[00:34:42] I'm going to need her to hurry up, though.
[00:34:44] I know.
[00:34:45] Just.
[00:34:46] I need some more.
[00:34:48] Yeah.
[00:34:48] Um.
[00:34:49] I'm starting to jump because I was, I was used to a certain schedule of getting an Amber
[00:34:53] D.
[00:34:53] Lewis book every couple of months.
[00:34:55] Right.
[00:34:56] And that has slowed.
[00:34:58] And.
[00:34:59] Yeah.
[00:34:59] I'm not mentally well.
[00:35:01] I understand.
[00:35:02] I understand.
[00:35:03] What about you?
[00:35:03] Tell me about your.
[00:35:04] Okay.
[00:35:05] Of the year.
[00:35:06] My nominees are The Ones We Hate by Katie Golightly.
[00:35:10] Streams and Schemes by Rebecca Kincaid.
[00:35:13] And Between Fate and Failure by Amber D.
[00:35:15] Lewis.
[00:35:16] And I.
[00:35:17] I mean, it's not a surprise.
[00:35:19] It's Between Fate and Failure.
[00:35:21] Yeah.
[00:35:21] Like, I just.
[00:35:22] Bash.
[00:35:23] Yeah.
[00:35:24] Bash.
[00:35:25] Bash.
[00:35:26] Our tortured little baby.
[00:35:27] My morally gray sweet baby angel.
[00:35:30] Yep.
[00:35:30] Love him.
[00:35:31] All right.
[00:35:32] This is the last one, you guys.
[00:35:34] Oh my goodness.
[00:35:35] Tell me about your overall book of the year.
[00:35:38] I don't know if I'm prepared to do this.
[00:35:42] I don't know.
[00:35:43] Okay.
[00:35:44] Well, I'm going to give you.
[00:35:46] I'm going to give you a list of six for nominees.
[00:35:48] But I've already talked about them because they're the last six books that I just talked about.
[00:35:53] Because obviously one of my books of the year has.
[00:35:55] My book of the year has to be between one of the patrificially published books.
[00:35:59] And one of the indie books that I put on my top.
[00:36:01] Right?
[00:36:02] Yeah.
[00:36:02] So I'm going to read them off.
[00:36:03] It's The Breakup Tour by Emily Waverly and Austin Siegman Broca.
[00:36:07] With The Svows by Rebecca Ross.
[00:36:09] The Last Blood Carver by Vanessa Lay.
[00:36:11] Between Fate and Failure by Amber D. Lewis.
[00:36:14] Streams and Schemes by Rebecca Kincaid.
[00:36:16] Or The Ones We Hate by Katie Golightly.
[00:36:18] I have to give this one.
[00:36:20] It's so hard.
[00:36:22] I'm like still right now I'm staring at it.
[00:36:24] I'm like I'm still going between the two.
[00:36:26] I think it has to be Between Fate and Failure by Amber D. Lewis.
[00:36:30] I just I just I mean it was just I don't know.
[00:36:36] Like obviously we've we've I've I've read Amber's writing up until now.
[00:36:40] And it was just it's still fantasy.
[00:36:42] But it was so different.
[00:36:43] It felt so different while still being the same.
[00:36:48] Like still comforting in her writing even though she's not a comfort cozy character writer.
[00:36:54] But like I just it felt familiar while being different.
[00:36:59] You know.
[00:36:59] Yeah.
[00:36:59] And again bash bash bash bash bash is a good enough reason for many things.
[00:37:07] Yeah.
[00:37:08] So my book of the year is Between Fate and Failure by Amber D. Lewis.
[00:37:13] Followed very closely by The Breakup Tour by Emily Wiberly and Austin Siegman Broca.
[00:37:18] Yeah.
[00:37:19] Yeah.
[00:37:19] All right.
[00:37:20] All right.
[00:37:20] It's your turn.
[00:37:21] Now I'm free.
[00:37:24] All right.
[00:37:25] My nominees for book of the year are Another First Chance by Robbie Couch, Between Fate and Failure by Amber D. Lewis and How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang.
[00:37:36] And I'm going to give it to you How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang.
[00:37:39] Because again it takes a lot to get someone with like such a hard stance on what I would do.
[00:37:47] And how I would be able like morally to act and still make me able to empathize.
[00:37:53] And we've talked about this book and it's like the premise of the whole book is an enemies to lovers between a girl and a guy who was driving the car that her sister stepped in front of to commit suicide.
[00:38:03] He was driving the car that killed her sister.
[00:38:05] My sister's a shit.
[00:38:06] She's a pain in my ass.
[00:38:08] My brothers are shits and they're pains in my ass.
[00:38:11] Because if you take them from me, I hate you forever.
[00:38:15] There is nothing.
[00:38:16] Like even if it wasn't your fault.
[00:38:18] I'm not going to wish you ill.
[00:38:19] I'm not trying to get romantically involved with you.
[00:38:21] Like I don't ever want to see you.
[00:38:23] I don't want to be around you.
[00:38:24] I just want to pretend you don't exist.
[00:38:25] You don't exist.
[00:38:27] You can be a billionaire and live the best life ever.
[00:38:29] You could die in a ditch and it would make no difference to me.
[00:38:31] And so for me to be able to say, wow, I can see how like this actually works as a story is such talented writing.
[00:38:40] It's like crazy.
[00:38:42] And that it being a debut is just mind blowing to me.
[00:38:45] Yeah.
[00:38:46] That is.
[00:38:46] Yeah.
[00:38:47] How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kwong is my book of the year overall.
[00:38:51] It's a good choice.
[00:38:52] Yeah.
[00:38:53] It's a good, good choice.
[00:38:54] We did it team.
[00:38:56] We did it.
[00:38:57] Another year.
[00:38:58] Oh my God.
[00:39:00] I can't believe we do this to ourselves every year.
[00:39:04] Yeah.
[00:39:05] It's so mean.
[00:39:07] It's so mean to do this.
[00:39:08] I know.
[00:39:08] But it's also fun.
[00:39:10] Yeah.
[00:39:10] But very mean because we read so much and they're all so good.
[00:39:14] Mm-hmm.
[00:39:16] All right.
[00:39:17] Is it time for the final spiel of this season?
[00:39:20] Oh my God.
[00:39:21] The final spiel of the season.
[00:39:22] All right.
[00:39:23] Well, I got to switch my notes over.
[00:39:25] Hold on.
[00:39:26] No.
[00:39:27] Well, because I'm not, I'm in a whole different note file because we're doing this.

[00:44:25] I can't believe we've been doing this for three years already.
[00:44:28] I can't either.
[00:44:29] It feels like this is the third time we've logged in, but it feels like we've always been
[00:44:34] doing this, but it feels like we haven't been doing this for a month.
[00:44:37] Yeah.
[00:44:37] We just started, but we've been doing it forever.
[00:44:40] Yeah.
[00:44:41] It's wild.
[00:44:42] And we only get to do it because y'all are still listening to us.
