Moment of silence. Aw, sad day. It is a sad day. Alright. It's a rough day. It is. It is. And I can't believe how long it's been since then.

[00:00:58] Like, I still remember vividly that day. Oh yeah. They came over the loudspeakers and they were like, um, teachers, turn off all computers and do not turn on any TVs or like let students have access to any technology. So I didn't know. Then I got home, I get off the bus and I go home, like I go in to watch TRL, which I did every day. And the phone is ringing. And my grandma is like, I answer. I literally, hello, the country is under attack. The country is under attack. Oh my God. Mandy?

[00:01:28] And I was like, what? She was like, honey, turn on a TV. Oh my God. We, it was, um, we don't watch the new, well, we don't watch American news, um, in our house generally, but we also don't watch the, didn't watch the news like before school kind of thing.

[00:01:48] Right. And so I got to school and I, I remember a friend of mine, we were standing outside of homeroom. This is seventh or eighth grade. Um, I think seventh grade and we're standing outside of homeroom and she's like, Oh, like a plane crash. Like she didn't know the extent of it.

[00:02:05] Yeah. And so she was grader. Yeah. You don't. And so, and so she was like, Oh, like, did you hear like a plane? I was like, Oh no. And like the day just kind of got progressively more somber as like more people were. Yeah. It was, it was rough. So, um, yeah.

[00:02:24] Yeah. What an awful day. I felt like such a chode earlier because a friend of mine posted like a fundraiser for a family member that is going through something and they were like claim a day and it's like a dollar amount that you donate to like support this family. And so I was like, I'll claim nine 11. Oh no. I was like, that's like, I should have just picked a different date. Like that's a weird, it was just the next one on the calendar.

[00:02:53] Right. Like that hadn't been selected. So I was like, Oh, the next day in the line, I'll take it. Yeah. Yeah. Oops. Yeah. All right. It's too soon. It, it whole, I feel like it'll be always too soon. It'll always be too soon. And there are people walking this earth old enough to drink and vote who were not alive. Which is insane. Scary. That is so scary. We're so old. I know. I don't like it. I don't like it at all. No. All right.

[00:03:23] Moving along. Yeah. This week in fangirling, what'd you do? Um, I went to the Goo Goo Dolls in my town, 10 minutes from where I live. We have an amphitheater now. Um, it's been open for a couple of years, but I've never, we've never been to it. We've always driven by it. But I found out this summer that the Goo Goo Dolls were coming. Nice.

[00:03:49] So, um, originally I had gotten tickets for Josh and me and then Josh was going to be out of town filming. And so I was going to get an extra ticket for the twins. Cause I said, casually, I'm going to see the Goo Goo Dolls. And they both went, Oh, without me. Because they love Iris. Yes. So I got them tickets. And then the day before he was like, you know what? He ended up not having to go. He was like, I'll go. Like, it'll be fun. So all four of us got to go. Nice.

[00:04:19] Like our friends, uh, Mike and Alicia Angus went with us. Um, if you've followed like the beacon TV side that I always tell people to follow in the spiel, um, Angus is Southern Heat Paranormal. He's like our grip. He's like a backup cameraman. Like he is the beacon workhorse. Um, so we got to go, we went to dinner and then we went to the concert. They were insanely good live.

[00:04:47] My husband's a musician. Like everybody's like, you're scared of ghosts and you end up married to a ghost hunter. I married a musician. Okay. I married the front man of a metal band, but he was in like jazz bands and all like music has been his life. Yeah. Even he was like, this dude sounds so good. Like, and he's not like getting a Goo Goo Dolls t-shirt. Like he was just going to go. Right. I mean, if you like grew up in the nineties, of course you have all, you know, like all of the popular ones, but he was just going to go.

[00:05:17] He was like, he sounds so good. Like he, it sounds just like the CD, but you could tell he wasn't lip syncing. Cause like he would deviate. Right. Notes and stuff. Um, so it was really good. And they had, they played black balloon. And when they played black balloon, a bunch of white balloons with black lettering that said black balloon across them came out. And he was like, look, we wanted to get the really good black balloons, but we couldn't afford the tariffs.

[00:05:47] I would die. It was so funny. Um, we helped my sister set up for like a medical convention. Um, so I got to spend Sunday with my babies. Um, my nephew is two and every, he's about to be three and everything is so exciting. It's the most exciting thing that's ever happened. We passed a train.

[00:06:14] So excited. And we call my, they call my husband bug and he like sometimes boogie. And he was going, buddy, it's a train. Buddy, buddy, it's a train. And if I had a like number one fangirl moment of the week, it was that. Oh, cause I might like, obviously his mom likes him, I guess. And then his Gigi, but like, I might be his number one fan.

[00:06:38] Um, and so like everything was me, me, yuck, buddy, yuck. Um, we've got to go to Trader Joe's and I got the apple cinnamon sourdough and I'm starting a fandom for it. Um, if you're near a Trader Joe's, go get the apple cinnamon sourdough. It will change your life. It's the most delicious bread I've ever had. Okay.

[00:07:08] Um, I did a Halloween decor project that spanned multiple days where I made it look like a crack and is coming out of my fireplace. That looks great. Thank you. I made it out of pool noodles, duct tape, wire, plastic wrap, and spray paint. Um, we watched the latest episode of Ted Lasso and without being like spoilery, Josh and I are kind of in disagreement about where apply is going. Cause he's looking at it as a filmmaker

[00:07:33] and I'm looking at it as a romance reader. So there are characters who were together who are not together right now. And one of the characters is really interested in getting back together. And the other one is like, how many people, like how many dates have you gone on? And they're like loads. And they're like, how many, like, have you gone again? Like how many have you like doubled back on? None. And so they're like, I need you to go on 10 meaningful

[00:08:01] dates and then maybe we can try again. Date six through 10, we're with the same person. Oh, so Josh is like, this is like, as soon as this person says like, I'm ready to try again. It's going to be like this person, this date person has forgotten. I'm like, we're going to have a season or two where this person is like, I really fucked it up this time.

[00:08:25] Mumford and Sons quote in there for you. Um, and have to watch like, look what I did and eventually they'll get together. Yep. Yep. Yeah. But it's not going to be soon. So we'll have to see. But me also arguing about it. Completely agree. Yeah. Completely agree. But he's like, I'm like, and he's at the film mindset of like, this is just like a device to stress you out for a minute, but it's going to get better. I'm nervous. I'm nervous.

[00:08:55] Cause that doesn't, I understand film devices, but it also doesn't seem genuine. Yeah. You know, anyways, um, I'm in the middle of my ACOTAR reread. I'm in Wings in Ruin right now. I always love Lucian and I was very public about how much I love Lucian. It's like hyped

[00:09:21] up. It is like off the charts, feral for Lucian Bencerra right now. Um, I put it, I made a stupid TikTok because I keep seeing people like if we don't see Asriel's deck in six or seven, like I'm done with this thing. Like I just want, I'm like, nobody wonders what Lucian's working with. Nobody, none of y'all, nobody is curious. Not even a little bit. Come

[00:09:49] on now. So we'll see. Um, yeah, I understand why I always hated Tamlin. I'm less, I'm here nor, I'm not here nor there. I still love Rhysand, but I've also determined, we know the show husband is a Kenji girly. He's not, I don't think he's going to read ACOTAR cause

[00:10:13] the first half of the first book is so excruciatingly painfully long when she's just in the woods fully like two months just to read the first half of that. Oh, it took me like four attempts over a couple of years where I was like, this is the hype. And then when COVID hit, I was like, okay. Okay. Um, if he were to read it though, he would be like, I understand why all the girlies love Asriel. He's a Cassian girly through and through. He would be like, it's

[00:10:42] Cassian. Like what is wrong with all these people? Rhysand? No. Cassian is the best. That. Yeah. I could see that. Tracks. Yeah. That tracks with, yeah. With Joss, that absolutely tracks. And usually we're on the same page with things like me and Josh, but I absolutely cannot choose between Cassian and Asriel. I can't. Well, okay. I just can't. Nope. Nope.

[00:11:11] Yeah. Um, he would want me to give the caveat that he's not a girly, obviously, but he's obviously girly. We know what it means. Cassian girly. Um, and then I've been working through Harbinger by Geneva Lee. More on that later. Yay. What did you do this week other than hobble around and sniffle? I, well, the sniffles are new. The sniffles are like today. Yeah.

[00:11:40] So that hasn't been the whole week. Thankfully I have been hobbling around. Um, I'm getting really great at knee scootering. So yay. Go me. Um, and carrying things while knee scootering and like balance. So that's something. Um, but I, uh, I, this past weekend, uh, we went to Galaxy Con here in San Jose because baby's first press pass. Yay. I got a media pass for

[00:12:10] Galaxy Con San Jose. Um, and so we were able to, I was able to take my daughter with me as, um, one, because any children under age of 12 are, were admitted for free with a grownup. And also two, um, I need an assistant. I'm clearly, I clearly need an assistant. Um, so it was, it was good. It was fun. Um, it's, uh, downtown at our convention center here, um, across the street

[00:12:40] from the like auditorium where I graduated from middle school. Um, so it's, it's really funny. Um, but I met, um, we didn't like sign up for any, um, autograph sessions or photo ops or anything like that. We were just kind of exploring shopping artist alley, that kind of thing. I found a really cute, um, uh, like pin and sticker shop. Um, nobody's as cute as Joanna, obviously we love

[00:13:08] here comes the bird, but it was a fun time. Like it, it was one of those where it's just like you pass by and you're like, Oh, okay. That's cute. And then you're like, Oh, I like that. And I like that. And I like that. And I like that we have the same fandoms. We're friends, that kind of thing. Um, so that was fun. I met, we just kind of hopped in the lines just to say hi, just to give, um, uh, good luck ducks out. Um, and so I met, uh, Tyler Hoechlin who was in Teen Wolf, but also more

[00:13:36] recently was Superman in the CW Superman and Lois. Um, and it was funny because at first we were walking by and I like saw him at the table and was like, I'll recognize you saw the name. And I was like, Oh, it's cause he's got a full bushy beard. Oh. And I'm like, last time I saw you, you were Clark Kent who is very clean shaven. So I was like, no, you know what? It looks good. It looks good. And he

[00:14:03] was so nice. It was very cute. Cause we like walked up and he like, he's like, hi, I'm Tyler. And I'm like, yeah, I know. Hi Tyler. Hi. Like I, I, your name is right here in your line, but that was very, it was very cute. Um, it was like, uh, he seems just, he's very nice. It seemed very like just down to earth. Um, just had a really fun, nice conversation. Um, and at one point he

[00:14:28] mentioned books and I was like, well, if you like books, here's a bookmark. If you ever need more book recommendations or you just want to talk about books. Yeah. He was like, I know where to find you. I'm like, yes, right there. You've got it. Um, so that was fun. And then we met, um, we met, uh, one of the voices behind a Saja boy. Um, don't tell my niece that,

[00:14:58] um, I, my brain is blanking, but I can't remember which one I'll figure it out at like 3am later and pop up and be like, ah, but my brain has just is dead. Um, but it was really funny cause he was like, wait, I know you. And I'm like, no, you don't. What do you mean? He's like, didn't you ask a question in the panel? I was like, okay, I feel better. No, I didn't. You'd probably just see me scootering around. And I was like, no, I would actually die

[00:15:25] if a Saja boy did know me just by seeing like, no, you don't. It's one thing when like somebody in the bookish world is like, I know you. Right. It's another thing when it's a fucking celebrity. A Saja boy. Yeah. A Saja boy? Are you kidding me? No, I would expire on the spot. Yeah. So that was when we went Kirk from Gilmore Girls. Um, and I got to breathe the same air

[00:15:48] as George Takei. Um, that was, that was everything. It was, it was, sorry. There's no words. No, no words. It was everything. Um, so yeah, that was really fun. I, it was my first media

[00:16:09] pass. Um, and then I would, didn't do much else because again, hobbling around. Um, but I did read a lot because I've been, you know, bedridden. Um, so I read, um, Tales from Briar Glenn by Ashley

[00:16:35] Bennett. Um, this is a collection of short stories that's set in the same world, in, in the world of Leviathan Fitness. Um, it gives us kind of more like little slices of life, um, tales of, you know, our favorite characters. Um, it's really fun. It's really cute. It's really quick reads. Um, and it just kind of rounded out like my little binge of the whole series as we're waiting for Ashley to write more. Yeah. Um, I read The Thorn Queen by Sasha

[00:17:04] Peyton Smith. This is book two in the duology that started with the Rose Bargain. So obviously I can't say much. Um, but we do pick up right where we left off in book one after Ivy and Emmett's scheming, um, kind of leads to vague spoilery things. Um, and Ivy is having a bit of a hard time dealing with the repercussions of all that. And we get to kind of watch her journey to fix that, fix the things that have been broken. It's a great time. It's truly

[00:17:31] perfect for fans of, um, if you like, like Bridgerton, The Selection, The Cruel Prince, it's a good time. Um, and I love Sasha Peyton Smith. So, um, that time I got drunk and saved a human by Kimberly Lemming. Um, this is the third book in the Mead Mishap series of Stan Lones. Um, this one follows Cherry who has, was like kidnapped a couple years ago by a dragon

[00:17:55] and has been held just kind of in his tower since then. Very like Rapunzel vibes, right? Yeah. He's like, I would like to leave. And he's like, no. Um, and so she's just been trying to figure out how to get home. Her family thinks she's dead. Um, so nobody's looking for her. Um, so she's just kind of stuck. Well, in walks Dante, who is a different dragon, who he is jealous of his friend

[00:18:21] who has found his mate. And so he's like, I want to find my mate. And while he's on this journey to find his mate, he walks into, uh, this other Gideon's tower to be like, Hey, I haven't seen him in a while. Maybe I should just check and make sure he's okay. Well, turns out Cherry is his mate. And I know shocking. We never would have seen that coming. Um, and in an attempt to kind of like

[00:18:45] whisk her away from Gideon because my mate, um, he, she accidentally drugs him because she thinks he's sitting there to kill her. Um, and in his very drugged up state, uh, she accidentally agrees for him to give her the mating mark, which she doesn't realize is what she's agreed to. She doesn't realize what's happening and he is drugged up. So he's not thinking clearly, obviously. Um, and

[00:19:13] basically the whole book is their kind of journey to get Cherry home because she just wants to go home, but also Dante's attempt to like convince her to fall in love with him because, you know, they're mated now. So yeah, you gotta get there. I mean, I'll let, if you don't want to, I get it, but like, yeah, it would be great. It'd be a good time. Um, and then I read lots of Kimberly

[00:19:39] Lemming. Two scoops of hellfire by Kimberly Lemming. It's a really quick novella follows a girl who tried to pick up baking during the pandemic because the pandemic, what else are we fucking doing? Um, and she accidentally summons a demon, um, and spicy times and, and baking ensues. Um, this is definitely, it's a really quick novella. It's like high spice, low plot.

[00:20:06] Exactly. Like hits a spot, you know? Yeah. Yeah. Um, and then followed that with what's a girl gotta do to get on the naughty list also by Kimberly Lemming. Also another novella it's set in the same world as hellfire. Um, the two girls in it are best friends. Um, and so this one follows a girl, um, her sister slept with her fiance and then convinced her ailing grandmother who she was taking

[00:20:34] care of and was living in her house. Um, the sister convinces the grandmother who is not mentally capable to sign over the house to her instead of our girly. Um, and so she gets, she loses her fiance. She loses her grandmother. She loses the house that she's been living in. So she decides on Christmas Eve instead of going to family dinner, because why would you want to do that? Right. Yeah. Um, she decides to get revenge by breaking and entering into the house to hide shrimp under the

[00:21:02] floorboards so that it stinks up the house. Um, she's the best. Um, unfortunately, uh, breaking and entering lands her on the naughty list. Um, and Krampus shows up to take her because she's been naughty. Um, but she's like, no, no, no, wait, wait, wait, listen to my story and then tell me if I belong on the naughty list. So he's like, you know what? All right, I'll listen. And he listens to her story and he's like,

[00:21:29] you know what? You're right. You are the only person who has ever gotten off the naughty list. Also, do you want my help to punish your sister and your ex-fiance? And she's like, absolutely I do. And so say, so they do. It's excellent. And then they decide to have spicy times. And she wakes up Christmas morning and with Krampus, she wakes up on Christmas morning and he's gone. And she's very

[00:21:56] upset because I'm sorry, that was excellent spicy times. Where did he go? So she's decided that in order to get in contact with him, she needs to get herself back on the naughty list. So she calls up her friend, our girly from hellfire and be like, we need to go rob a bank. And so they plan to go and rob a bank. And he shows up while they're outside. And he's like, what are you doing? She's like, I didn't know how else to contact you. So we're robbing a bank.

[00:22:25] And it's hilarious. Good times. It's also lots of spice, lots of spice, but it definitely has a little bit more plot than hellfire. But it's a good time either way. And it's Kimberly Lemming is just generally hilarious. Her books just make me laugh all the time. It's a good time. Then I read Go Luck Yourself by our friend Sarah Roche. Someone has been stealing Christmas joy. And the only clue that is left behind

[00:22:54] is a single shamrock. So obviously, the Christmas people are like, it's St. Patrick's Day. They're stealing our joy. And so Chris, who is the spare heir of Christmas, is sent to St. Patrick's Day as like a Goodwill ambassador. After he accidentally pranks the Prince of St. Patrick's Day. He didn't know he was the Prince of St. Patrick's Day. But he pranked him.

[00:23:21] It was like, you know, everything goes viral. And now they're like, oh, no, we have to repair this relationship between Christmas and St. Patrick's Day. But also, this is a good time for you to investigate. So he goes there. He's there for, I think, like a week to kind of to experience all of like the festivities leading up to St. Patrick's Day, but also to investigate who is stealing

[00:23:46] Christmas joy and how he's going to get it back. And what he absolutely could not predict, but we as romance reader absolutely could, is that the chemistry between him and Prince Lachlan of St. Patrick's Day is just kiss. And of course, of course, Lach is absolutely infuriating and

[00:24:09] insanely hot too, you know, because of course, of course he is. And then I read Dawn of Chaos and Fury by Melissa K. Rorick, which is the fourth and final book in the Legacy series. And we thought, finally, finally, finally, finally, finally get to see what happens when chaos comes to reign, which obviously I will say absolutely nothing about it, because what kind of evil person would

[00:24:34] I be to spoil the conclusion to an epic saga like that? That would be just evil. And I am a perfect angel and have no wrong ever. So obviously, I'm not going to do that. And that, I mean, I'm also reading Harbinger by Geneva Lee, but we'll talk about that in a little bit. So that was my week. It's a pretty good week. It was good. It was a good time.

[00:25:03] Could you pick a fictional boyfriend from this week? I wrote a whole... It was a whole... No. I did write a couple paragraphs, though. Oh, my lord. In my defense, the font's small. It's not big paragraphs. Okay, so from the Legacy series, specifically Dawn of Chaos and Fury, Axel St. Orcus, who is the younger St. Orcus brother,

[00:25:32] we get to see this completely different side of him in this book as he settles into this new life after something life-changing, parentheses negative, happens in the previous book. And as the person that I am, who is in the stage of life that I am right now, I'm trying to be very vague

[00:25:54] as to avoid spoilers. But it made me fair role for him. I was like, I loved him from the beginning. But this book, this man in this position? You're like, done. Everything to me. Give me that. Full sense. Give it. Give it. Give it. Give it. Give it. Katya might have something to say about that. But you know what? Girl, we can share. It's fine. It's fine. But okay. And yes,

[00:26:22] obviously, as anyone else who has read the series will know what I mean. Like, Theon, yes, his brother, yeah, he's fine too. I will say I do like him a lot more in this book than when we kind of first saw him. And I know it was like enemies to lovers, but he was just so obtuse and irritating in a way in the first book. Like, I liked him, but it pissed me off a lot. And he has changed so much from book one

[00:26:51] to book four. And I'm here for it. I'm here for it. And finally, of course, I cannot talk about A Fictional Boyfriend from this series without talking about Luca Morris. Because let's be so fucking for real. Like, I'm sorry. If you know, you know. I can't say it. Like, just if you know,

[00:27:11] you know. And that's my my rants on. I love them. It's it's it's I like I picked up the series. I think the first book was part of a reading challenge that I was doing. And I liked it so much that I just kept going. And here we are finally at the end. And these are very long books.

[00:27:36] Like, I'm talking like 2530 hours. So Jesus, it took me time to get there. But I knew I could do it because I did Kindred's Curse. I knew I could do it. Yeah, you got it. No good. So it was a good time. It was a good time. So yeah. What about you? Solution Vansera. I'm shocked. I'm so shocked.

I've got Lucy and Vansera with his long red hair. And he's always been

[00:28:29] Tom Hiddleston in my eyes. Anyways, he's sneaky. He's, you know, hopefully, please God, I want I need this man to get what he wants. Right. If you know, you know. Yep. I'm like so tortured because he's found out. Yep. The situation. He's found out things. And now to be happy. And

[00:28:59] everyone who ships those two people together should go to jail. Lock them up, throw away the key. You should not be out here using our resources. If you think that she should be with anybody that's not Lucien, I'm sorry. I feel like when we first started this podcast, we had a very long conversation about what we think would happen between the two of them. And I stay infirm by this. I believe that we are

[00:29:29] correct. And it has to happen that way. Otherwise, throw the whole series out. I'm sorry. I can't do it. I can't do it. I don't like, I don't know what I'm gonna do. If it's anything other than that boy being happy. Yeah. Agreed. Agreed. And I want her to be happy too, obviously. Like, right,

[00:30:16] We have Geneva Lee with us. And we're talking about Harbinger. Oh my God, I can't get over this cover. It's so good. So say thank you so much for being here. We're really excited to chat. So the first question we always ask, we always joke, it's like the hardest question is, can you give us the elevator pitch of the book? This is such a long book that like the elevator

[00:30:39] pitch. I'm like, what is it? No. So it is basically in a kingdom that is celebrating 500 years of peace. A girl is called to the royal court to undergo the ritual where she'll get her magic. But she makes a choice and chooses mercy in the wrong moment. And the stars mark her with a forbidden line of

[00:31:06] magic rather than her family magic. And that puts a target on her back because the kingdom decides it means she's an omen of war. That was not quite elevator-y enough, but it's 170,000 words long. It's very difficult to distill. That's why how tall is the elevator? How tall is the building? Right. It's like we're in Philly and there's like 68 floors. I got it. We're going for a while. It's okay.

[00:31:34] Yeah. So where did this story come from? How was it born? So what's interesting about this story is that the kernel of it, and this is going to be like some, I feel like me saying the kernel of it is going to haunt me for years because I've said it so many times, but I feel like the kernel of it is a huge spoiler. So if you've read it, you know what it is. But so I'm always like, so I can't tell you what it is.

[00:32:02] But that idea I had before I'd written my first book. So I had that idea circa, I want to say, 2010. And I had, I tried to kind of like, well, what would this story look like? And I wasn't really sure. So I moved on to other ideas, wrote other books. And every couple of years I came back to this

[00:32:28] kernel of an idea, this story I wanted to tell. I even got so far as to write about half of a very, very different version where this kernel was the main plot line before I went, eh, this isn't right and scrapped it. So the heart of this story has been with me my entire writing career, sort of waiting. And when Red Tower came along and said, would you, would you like to write a Red Tower series?

[00:32:56] Because I'd been publishing with a different imprint at the publishing house. I was like, yes, yes, I definitely, I know I want to write a secondary fantasy because I, but I'd also been collecting notes for this entire time. My notes app on my phone is about a decade long of every random thought I've ever had about stories. So it's like a random line, a name I really liked, somewhere, a place, like some of it I don't understand. Sometimes I'm reading it and I'm like, what does that mean?

[00:33:24] It's like fluff the percolator at noon. And I'm like, what was that? What were you drunk? So, but I had all of these ideas I've been collecting. And so they asked me and I was like, great, now I can pull out all of these ideas I've had. And I wrote everything down, the kernel and then every other idea. And it was like three pages of just notes and random lines

[00:33:47] and things for a fantasy novel that I hadn't used in my other romanticity series. And I'm sitting with them like, what is the idea? What is the idea? What is the idea? And the first thing I knew for sure was this is it. This is, this is going to be the book with the kernel. And then I'm looking at all the other things being like, okay, so what fits with that? And I'm looking at it all. And I actually had this sort of epiphany moment in the middle of the night. And I sent, I'm going to date myself and

[00:34:15] say, I sent my friend Marco Polo in the middle of the night that was like, it's all the same book. It's all the same series. I've been trying to, it's, I've been collecting for 15 years for this book. And all of these ideas are all the same book, same world. It was this wonderful, beautiful, like full circle moment where it was like, wow, I actually have a ton of world building

[00:34:42] to sort of draw off of. And I finally, finally feel like I'm ready to tell that story that's been haunting me, just following me around like a, you're not a good enough writer to do it yet. Or what, I don't know what my hangup was. It was just never quite right. Because I do kind of subscribe to the idea that sometimes we have ideas for stories and they're just not, they need to go

[00:35:06] sit on the burner a little longer. They need to cook a little bit longer. So yeah, this is, this is a 15 years in the making book. Man, that must feel so good to finally get there. It does. It definitely feels like I'm, you know, I'm setting up, this is the first of a five book series. And so I'm setting up the world in a really big way. And for me, it's like creating a playground. So now it's like the next couple of years, I get to go live and play on this playground

[00:35:36] that I've created for myself. That's so exciting. That's so cool. That's really cool. Really cool. So speaking of your writing career as a whole, you write contemporary, you write vampires, you write fae, kind of everything all over. Can you talk a little bit about like your writing process? Are you a plotter or a pantser somewhere in between? Does that change depending on what kind of book you're

[00:36:02] writing? Like if you're writing a contemporary versus a fantasy? I have kind of written all over, although I think that anyone that's been with me for a while probably is like, but we always get this, but we always get that. You know, for me, it's more about like certain tropes and like stories and ideas keep showing up, whether it's vampires or a fake version of the British royal family or,

[00:36:26] you know, Harbinger. So I have ADHD and I am one of those like adults that got diagnosed and like that, like my husband had this close friend that was an ADHD life coach and he kept telling me stories about his friend. And I finally looked at him one night at dinner, like after like the third or first story and I went, do I have ADHD? And he's like, Oh God. Yeah. I've just been trying to get you there

[00:36:52] the whole time because it, I mean, it's like just horrifyingly obvious when I look back because I've never written a book the same way twice ever. I have to trick my brain every single time I go to write a book. It's like, how are we going to do it this time? I'm in awe of my friends that are like, I sit down at the exact same time. I write the same number of words. I do this, this, this, then I make a whole plan and I know exactly when the book will be done. And I'm like, what is that like?

[00:37:21] Because I, I've written books from the end to the beginning. I've jumped around in books. I've dictated books. I, you know, I've, I've laid in a dark room doing it on like a voice recorder and sent it to someone else to type up before, because that was how that story wanted to be told. I mean, I've just, I've done it all. And I would say that like on the plotter panzer scale, I'm that, that I'm like firmly like in the middle, the plotter, which is a terrible name.

[00:37:50] It sounds like something bad has happened to you medically. Right. But I, I, I, I need to sort of like have a kernel of inspiration and then I need to go play for a little while. Is this going to work? What do I, what do I find when I, when I throw this character into this situation, what happens what, you know, and I play for a little bit and that's kind of my pantsing period. And once I feel like, okay, I'm starting to see it, a lot of times I will stop and at least give myself like a roadmap.

[00:38:18] It's not, you know, I've, I've done ones where I have a 12,000 word long outline and I've done ones where it's just eight to 10 notes about major plot things that are going to happen. So I've kind of gone all over the place, but I think that's eventually I do have to sort of reign the ADHD in and come up with a plan and say, okay, are we on track? Are we following things? Sometimes I get halfway through

[00:38:44] the book and I'm like, now it's time to look and see, have I missed something? Am I setting this up properly? Like, you know, and just kind of go back and re-engineer and look at the whole plot as a whole, but I'm definitely, I don't recommend this way of doing it. But if you're, if you have ADHD and you're out there thinking, I'd love to write a book, but I'm really not sure I could ever write 300 pages

[00:39:09] or 400 pages. You can do it. You just have to, it's all about the novelty. This is true. I love that. How does that translate into a five book series? Because that is like, right. Right. Yeah. I initially signed for three books and when my editor read it, she called me and she's like, I need at least five books for this. Like this is too, going to be too big of a world. And I

[00:39:35] was like, okay, fair. But my longest running series that, you know, I never consider any series like completely done and dusted. I reserve the right to go back and write more in a world that I've created. So, but my longest running series, I started in gosh, 2014. And I, the last book I published in it

[00:39:58] was 2024. And so there's like 14 books in that series, 13 or 14. I don't even know. So I was like, oh, I can do this. I, you know, like, I actually really love when you set up the world. Like for me, the like beautiful part of really any story, like I love big plots. I love ridiculous things happening, but it's the characters. So for me getting to spend longer with characters and peel back more

[00:40:23] of them and getting to know them, like I love film family. And the way that you really get to experience that is just more time, more pages, more books. So I'm always just kind of excited when I feel like I've built something big enough to hold a longer storyline with, with the people longer. Cause I get so attached to characters. Even in other people's books or on TV. I'm just like,

[00:40:46] no, that's clearly not where it ended. Yeah. This is wrong. Yes. Right. Yeah. Yeah. I was writing fan fiction and notebooks before there were like online forums to do this. It's like, they're wrong about this. That's not what would happen at all. Oh, I love that. That makes it for you. That's right. Allow me to handle this situation. You're wrong. Okay. I have to know about the sword fighting. God, that was my question too. No. Yeah. Mine. It's

[00:41:16] mine. You learned, so you learned to sword fight in order to like, I did, I did. And let, let me be clear. Like, I'm not like, you shouldn't be like, Oh no, war is coming. I'll go to Geneva's house and she'll protect me. I'm not like that. Like I, like I, I could do some moves with a sword, but, um, I did, I went out and had, like, I, I just, I decided that since there was going to be sword

[00:41:42] fighting and training in the book that for me, I jokingly call it method writing where if I can go and do something I'm going to put in a book, I'm 100% going to go do it and lessen a ball's heights and I'm not jumping out at anything. That's valid. That's, that's the line. But I was like, Oh, I know I want to have sword fighting in this book. And, um, I want to know, like, how heavy does it

[00:42:07] feel in the arm? Like how sore would you be after a day of training? Like how hard, you know, like, what does it actually feel like to be like manipulating a sword and using a sword? And so, uh, I was trying to find sword fighting lessons in my area and it was surprisingly difficult. Um, so it was like fencing is very easy to find, but as I was doing that, I discovered that the actor

[00:42:36] of a, like a TV show that I loved growing up and, um, and like nobody else has watched this, but I grew up like obsessed with this freaking show. And he now goes and does sword training workshops, like all over the country, all over the world, really. Like you can go do it in Scotland with him. You can go. And it was just a bizarre set of circumstances where I was, I was looking

[00:43:03] actively for a place to learn how to sword fight, watching this TV show, like just for like vibes in the background. And I was like, what are you up to? And then it turned out that I could go out to Colorado and sword train with him. So I packed my husband up in the car and was like, we're going to go learn how to sword fight. Uh, I'm not going to look stupid and do it alone. So let's go do it.

[00:43:29] And so we spent, it was just, it was like a whole thing. Uh, we didn't know that it was going to be outside because they said it was going to be at the, um, Olympic training facility out there. And so I just, I heard that and thought inside at a training facility instead it was like at a, like, like, like at this big lawn that they had out front. So we're up at like elevation. I haven't

[00:43:54] brought sunscreen at all. It is an eight hour thing. And I, in like, those wooden swords are heavy. Uh, they're so heavy at one point. Like I was like saying, like I was gripping the sword too tightly and the guy's correcting me. He's like, you gotta be loose. I was like, it's so heavy. It's so hard to hold. And he's like, and he hands me his, he's like, well, do you think that's as heavy? I was like, yes. In fact, I do think it is heavy too. I am simply just a girl. Like he was like,

[00:44:23] he was just like, you know, he has an accent so he could get away with saying whatever, but, um, we're doing, we do it all day and I'm such a competitive person. I'm like, I have to keep this light or I'm going to wind up fighting with my husband and taking it too seriously. So I'm like, like, I keep breaking down in laughter because I can't do half the things we're supposed to do, but I'm trying, I'm trying. I'm all there. Like I would try to go to war in this moment if that was the, that was the assignment. Um, and by the end of it,

[00:44:52] we were just sunburned. Like you would not freaking believe we get back to the hotel and I took my shirt off and I was wearing like, uh, like a yoga shirt with like a cutout. Right. And my husband's like, Oh, you have on your back. Like it looks like a big, and I was like, did you just say I have a on my back? Cause I had at this point, like I'd only written a few things, but I knew one thing for sure. And so it felt like this sign. I was like, you're on the right path. You're doing exactly

[00:45:21] what you're supposed to be doing. You just literally got marked for your kindling. Yeah. So I did go out and learn and I really, really wanted to keep doing it, but I, I haven't had that much of an opportunity until I started doing, I just, just in the last couple weeks started doing the weapon up sword yoga. Um, and mostly that's just been me trying to learn how to flip it because everybody, everybody else can do this. My whole family, you hand them the sword, you show them the video and they're like, so you do it like this. And I'm like,

[00:45:52] make my hand do it. Like my husband's like manipulating my hand. So I would 100% like try to defend you, but I don't think I'm your best option. You'd probably do better than I would. You need protection.

[00:46:16] So have you, that's amazing. Um, like what other like book research would you do or have you done for like a fantasy book like that? Like I'm not jumping out of anything either. I'm not doing a plunge. I'm not doing a parapet. That's not going to be me. No. Oh, I would do the parapet. Not over height. I'm not doing that. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. I can't do height. I think if it was getting, if, okay, let me be clear. If Zayden is standing on the other

[00:46:44] side of the parapet, I'm going to cross that motherfucker. Okay. You know what I'm saying? You know what? That's fair. Yeah. Yeah. I have prior claim on him to everybody. I got to read that book early. He's in my night called dibs. I mean, probably not as early as you, but I got an art. Six months before the book, I was like, no, he's mine. Thank you. You may all, you may all back away now. Um, what have I, what else have I done? Uh, I will, you know, I've traveled to most of the places

[00:47:13] that, that where there are things that take place in all the filthy rich books. And those are, you know, they're like urban romanticcy. So they take place in our world. And then sometimes you go into a separate, like magical world there. Um, so I'll, I'll go and travel. I really, really love when I'm writing a book that's set in our world. I really, if I can, I travel there and

[00:47:37] I will put some little thing. Like if I say there's a pharmacy on a certain street corner in London, you best believe that you can find that pharmacy. If I say that there is like there's, so there's these magical enclaves in the filthy rich world. And, and these are like access points to magic that other people, if you don't have magic, you can't enter all of those like places. Like you can kind

[00:48:04] of, you could actually go and like find them in all the filthy rich vampire, like the bookstore that you enter, that's a real bookstore, the place in Paris where they go in there, there's a real gate in that spot. So I like, it's just silly, kind of silly things like that, where I just want to give it that like experiential, like feeling. Um, and then I'll just take up really random hobbies for a

[00:48:29] while, which is great. Cause I have ADHD, right? So I love my, I've, I've live and die by this hobby for the next six months and then I'll never do it again. Or you order all the things to do it and then you never actually pick it up. That's mine. Oh, I'm a big fan of that. I was going to do the whole like special book binding thing. I kept watching these videos being like, I want to buy books. I've never found a book in my life. I never will, but I had the supplies. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:48:55] We can do it all. We can do the whole library. Yeah. I have it for the, uh, the like needle point on a sweater. No, I can't. I'm such a big fan. I think I'm even better at buying supplies for a hobby than I am at taking up hobbies. I can buy supplies for a hobby all day. The amount of boxes of yarn that I have. You want to do it, come over.

[00:49:24] All right. Uh, switching gears kind of a little bit, but you used to co-own an indie bookstore. Um, and as a current indie bookseller, I'm pretty sure that means that we're like best friends now. So I don't make the rules. That's it. That's yeah. We will, we did the secret handshake off. Yeah. Um, so I, I'm not a hundred percent sure on the timeline, but were you actively like being a bookseller while you were also writing or was that after the fact?

[00:49:52] Oh, well, remember how I, this is like the recurring, the theme of this episode is Geneva has ADHD. So, um, I was an author. Yeah. She has ADHD. So we don't know how the fuck she gets books written either. Um, we walked away going, um, uh, so I was an author and we had moved

[00:50:17] to a little small town in Washington and my aunt was in for a visit and my sister and I took her out to eat. And the little, we have this most adorable little downtown. It's a real, it's a, it's a, it's a real, yes. And of course it's a real town. It's called Paulsbo in Washington. Uh, a shocking number of people have been to this place that only has 2000 people. I've heard of

[00:50:42] it from Georgia. Right. I think it's bizarre. The number of people that are like, Oh, I lived there. Oh my cousin. I was like, how everyone I meet has heard of this. So it's like this little, like, it looks like a little, like almost Nordic waterfront because the people who sell settled it were all like mainly from Norwegian countries, countries. And so we're walking along

[00:51:05] and we pass this used bookstore that's been there forever. And the lights are off and there's something about like just the, the energy of the space that I looked at her. I was like, the bookstore is closing. And she's like, what? And I was like, the bookstore is closing. I want the bookstore. And that's how a week later I had keys to a bookstore and no plan.

[00:51:31] And whatsoever apart from, and when we like, he had, he had literally left the bookstore and like followed his girlfriend to California or something. So I, I inherited all the books. I like, what I mean? And so it was like, what are we going to do with all of these? Cause we had a vision for being like a female focused bookstore with the kind of genres that like women love to read. And then like a really great, like kids area that you could, you could literally walk in there and be

[00:51:59] like, I'm going to go shop around right now. Mommy's going to shop and you guys can just hang out here and feel really safe. And, um, so it was this wonderful little bookstore called the way with words. It's still exists. It's a little bit, the new owners have like done different things with it. My sister, we had a bath product line we created that was completely like focused around

[00:52:23] books. So they were all like genre based and she developed an environmental allergy to it. And we didn't know until she got COVID like two years ago, two or three years ago now. Um, and she got COVID and left the bookstore and all of a sudden all these like eczema and terrible symptoms, I mean, really, really bad cleared up. And we're like, Oh my God, it's the bookstore.

[00:52:49] You're allergic to this. So we made the decision to go ahead and sell it to friends of ours. So it's still there and it's lovely. Um, but sadly you can still go to a way with words. Do you think that like any part of that experience help has helped you like in whatever way as an

[00:53:10] author? Oh, certainly. I mean, I think that, um, in like really odd ways, if you will, like, uh, I was so surprised by the number of people that were really anti-romance novel, um, that would come into that store. And that was like a weird sort of eye opening thing that like, I know it's gonna sound

[00:53:36] like, well, how did the album was an author? It was like, it just, it was another like layer of armor that I learned to put on about like not apologizing for the things and the books that I love. Um, when, yeah, yeah. So it was definitely, and then we got to meet, we got to meet a lot of authors. I mean, of course I knew authors, but we met new authors through there. Like it was a really, and it also really taught me about how slim those margins are, how hard booksellers are working to

[00:54:06] like, and they're doing it because they love it. Books, not me. This is not a money-making scheme to be clear. Every time someone comes to, I'm like, you really want to think about this. It's not going to make as much money as you think it's going to make, you know, like this is, you have to do it because you love it. You know, I always say if I won the lottery, I would open a bookstore just because I could, we have a restaurant called the rookery here. And I

[00:54:33] would love to open a bookstore next door called the bookery. I feel like that would be really cute. The bookery by the rookery, but no, I feel you're going to have to remind me later and email me. I, I feel very strongly that I have a bookery in one of, in my rival saga. Really? Yes. You said it. And I was like, rivals instantly. I'm like, it's some, it's either, it's that or it's so damn close that my brain is associating it. So that's so cool.

[00:55:01] Existence fiction friend. It's a great fricking name for a bookstore. It is. And especially when there's a restaurant right there called the rookery. The rookery. Bookery. It's adorable. I love it. Okay. We want to keep you forever, but we promised that we wouldn't, but we do have a couple of questions that we always ask our guests. Go ahead and give you a like heads up. This is where every bit of media you've ever consumed is

[00:55:28] going to leave your brain. Like what is a book? I've never seen a movie. It's a strange phenomenon. What are movies? Yeah. So we have a segment on the podcast that we call fictional boyfriend of the week, where we pick a fictional character that we're really vibing with. Doesn't have to be a boyfriend. Karen's had a fictional granny. I've had a fictional son. Do you have any fictional characters in books, TV, movies, video games, whatever, where you're like, that's my boo thing. That's my best friend.

[00:55:56] If anybody tries to cross them, I like, they got to go through me. Damon Salvatore. That's a good one. We have it. We actually have a staying in my house. Damon's always right. Because I was watching this on DVD several years ago. We just moved to Washington. We didn't have internet at the house. That's a whole different story. So we'd gone and bought all of these like discs, like DVDs, right? And we're watching DVDs at night. My husband's just

[00:56:25] on his phone. I'm in the second season of this show. I've never seen it before, but I'm very invested. And my husband's not paying any attention at all. And he just goes, Damon's always right. No one ever listens to Damon. I'm watching. I knew it. And he is as big a Vampire Diaries fan to this day as I am. But that's how it started. Like Damon's always right.

[00:56:51] So I really do. I really do love Damon Salvatore. Like it's not healthy probably. Visit me because I'm like two hours from Covington where they filmed it. So like you can go like I ate at the Mystic Grill a couple of months ago. Like I did ask my husband. Does it actually say Mystic Grill or do they just like put? I mean, they'll come right up when they film because they also film Sweet Magnolias there. So it's Sullivan's for Sweet Magnolias. So like, yeah, it does say the Mystic Grill though. Like if you go on a regular day when they're not filming anything. But we went. Oh my gosh.

[00:57:20] We did a ghost tour there one time. I had no idea I could go to the Mystic. I'm going to do that. Yeah. I asked him, I was like, are you team Stefan or are you team Damon? And he was like, neither. And I was like, good answer. We're team Klaus in this house. Fair. Fair. I do. I do love Klaus. Nobody has Klaus's smile. Nobody. You know, it's funny because I would with Philly Ridge Vampire, I really set out to make Julian

[00:57:44] sort of kind of Damon. And I feel like in many ways he's more Elijah than anyone else. Like I was like, that's not who I am. I'm like, okay, fine. You can't put me in your box. Right. These characters, man, they do whatever they want. They robbed us of the Klaus and Caroline story. And it makes me. Yes. That's the one where I'm going to go write fanfic and like write angry letters. Like why did you tell him? Why did you have him tell her he was your first love? I intend

[00:58:14] to be your last. And then never do anything again with that. And then it just never really happened. They had that like pitiful where they brought her back right before, you know, I'm not going to spoil it. Where you're just like, what the shit kind of cop out ending was that? Yeah. Really? I have some issues with the whole like, I guess we just know if we're signing up for those shows, I guess we know how it ends for our favorite characters. Right? Right. Not okay. Just turn it off for the last 10 minutes every time. Yes.

[00:58:43] Pretend it doesn't exist. Never happened. I'm still here. Yeah. All right. So obviously we are loving Harbinger. We're having a good time. But what we would love to know is like, what are you reading? What are you recommending? Do you have anything that like is just everybody needs to read this? Oh gosh, let's see. Well, just a couple, like a couple weeks, months. I don't know. Time bleeds together.

[00:59:14] Time has no meaning. Right. Time doesn't really have meaning when you live mostly in fictional worlds. I read Night Tide by Lexi Ryan. I really, really enjoyed that. That's a vampire romantic that's coming out in, I think it's coming out in 2027. Pretty sure. Could be wrong. I feel positive. And then I've actually been reading and I have to pronounce this slowly because I mess it up every

[00:59:40] time. Dungeon Crawler Carl. I do it very slow. I don't do. Call, call. Yeah. So I'm on the, now I'm just blanking if I'm on the fourth or fifth because I just, I just immediately am like next, next book. They just all blend together. Next book. And I just keep going. Well, they're very serialized and I love that personally. And I've been having a really, really good time.

[01:00:05] Like it's very, very funny. And I'm very invested in Princess Donut and Carl's journey at this juncture. So yeah, I'll probably stay. I'm going to be on that for a while because that's a long series and I only get a little tidying about reading right now because I'm on deadline. I'm always on deadline. I dream of a day where I'm just reading again. Okay. That does segue us into our last question

[01:00:31] is what comes next? I mean, we know this is a series, but what are you working on? What can we expect? Well, I am, uh, I'm finishing up Filthy Rich Fae 3, Bloody Crown. And that comes out, um, winter, spring of next year. And that's, uh, that's the next one in that sort of multiverse, Filthy Rich multiverse. Um, and then I have to kind of decide for a while what I'm going to do.

[01:01:00] Cause of course, Filthy Rich Fae has been optioned by MGM. So they're, they're developing it right now for TV. So fingers crossed that we're going to see that. So everyone's like, what's the next spinoff? What's the, are we doing, are we doing gods or witches or werewolves? I'm like, because I just signed up for a five book series. So I'll finish this one and immediately

[01:01:24] go over to the next Harbinger book, which we're all, we kind of, you know, speaking of the cover, we didn't really think about the fact that like future books were like, well, so we're going to have to be able to do the weird lettering thing. So I can't title it because every time I'm like, no, we can't break that up evenly. Nope. We can't break that up. Uh oh. So who knows, or maybe, maybe the designer is going to come up with some magical fix for this

[01:01:53] particular problem, but I didn't even think about that. You know what? Yeah. Artists and cover designers are, are magical people. They, I'm sure they can make it work. They are. So I'm hoping that they'll come up with something because I have a title I kind of love, but we'll see if that's the one that sticks. So yeah, for me, it's just, I'm going to finish up my time in the nether court, New Orleans, and then go right back to Antares and I'll probably be there for a really long time.

[01:02:23] I don't know that I'll really get a chance to move around too much from, from that. So we'll see. I know. Cause everybody wants to know when there's going to be a fifth filthy rich vampire book. And I'm like, I keep being like next year, I'll get to it next year. I've stopped saying that. I'm like, like sometimes, sometimes desperately want to go back. I've never had more fun than writing those books. They were just pure joy to write. Cause I finally got to write vampires.

[01:02:52] So I'm like, I want to write more vampires. I gave him brothers for a reason. So hopefully, hopefully someday. Eventually. Right. Yeah. Well, this is kind of the point where we give you a little teeny, teeny tiny crumble of bad news, which is that now that you've been on the podcast, you're actually legally obligated to come back for all future book releases. I'm like, I think we need to talk to somebody else because that's just a really long, long way to say. Thing to say. Right. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, what the fuck do you mean? It's not a duck. Right. Okay.
