[00:00:00] My name is Brianne Randall and this is the Incoherent Fangirls Podcast. Welcome to the Incoherent Fangirl. Where we might have to go get pie after talking to our guests today. Just maybe. Maybe some pudding. Some good stuff. Some croissants. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm Mandy of Chateau d'Ancy.

[00:00:29] And I'm Karin of The New Republic. Oh! Uh oh. Welcome back to the podcast friends. In our timeline it is April 22nd and you'll notice that is a Wednesday and you know what? It's Earth Day which feels very witchy so it feels on brand. Okay. And in y'all's timeline it is May 1st.

[00:00:54] I just picture someone taking out their calendar every time you say this like, Ha ha ha! That's not a Thursday. What's going on? I would love if there was somebody who was like looking at the calendar like, This is so suspicious. Why are these people recording? Are they lying to us? That's not a Thursday. What are you talking about? I'm gonna be traveling on Thursday. I'm going to Michigan this weekend in an RV.

[00:01:22] With two boys and two girls and me. I am picturing this on a map and that feels like a bazillion miles apart. It's a 14 hour drive. See, in my brain it feels so much farther than that. Am I just... That feels very far. I know! That is very far. No, I'm not saying that's not far. But it feels like it's not far enough. Am I just really, really bad at geography?

[00:01:51] I mean, I fear we both are. That's true. I only know that it's only 14 hours because I've like mapped it. Yeah. You know? To see if I was gonna agree to go. That is so valid because that is... That's far. We're going to like a pet... It's like a paranormal event that my husband is like a guest on. But there, it's like named after the founder's dog who saved him from committing suicide. He was like, I have to live for my dog.

[00:02:20] And they're doing something for Georgie. Apparently, they want to like honor him there. So I was like, well, obviously I'm gonna go then. Yeah, you can't not go. Good boy. Yeah. Yep. So that's that. This week in fangirling, what did you do, Mandy? I finished Vanderpump Villa, Queen Stossi Supremacy. I love her. You can't make me hate her.

[00:02:50] I'm even rewatching Vanderpump Rules earlier this year. It was like... She was a 23 year old surrounded by 30 and 40 year olds. Get out of here. Okay. Leave her alone. She was acting like a 23 year old. She's just a baby. She was a baby. They did not fully edit Dakota out of the dad talk thing. He doesn't like talk, like talk a lot. Like it doesn't focus on him. But you still see his stupid face.

[00:03:21] They still like put his name on the screen. So like we're editing him out was a wild thing to say. I heard that or I saw that he was suing them for like, like after they had it after it was said that they were editing him out of Vanderpump Villa. I saw something that said he was going to sue them because he would like, it was a breach of contract. He would lose money on like what, bro?

[00:03:50] You got enough problems on your hand. Yeah. Let's not worry about Vanderpump Villa. Fucking stop my God. And all the rest of the nightmare you're in. Jesus. Yeah. Um, my main takeaway though, was Jesse from secret lives of Mormon wives has the douchiest taste in men. I mean, looking at Jordan. And then Marciano. Are you kidding me? Yeah. Ew.

[00:04:17] Even if I'm sorry, so just that forehead like not forehead the hairline that like it looks like yeah, I can't hedgehog. And the insane amount of Botox in his forehead and the eyebrows that are always raised like you don't have to trust me. My taste in men is Hozier. Okay. And I get that's not for everyone, but you. Yeah. I'm sorry if that's what your taste is, but you.

[00:04:48] Yeah. So yeah, I agree. That was my big like my face the whole time I was watching. It was just like. Yeah, their whole episode. I was just. It was gross. Gross. They're terrible. Um, I got I started listening to Dawn Bringer by Stephanie Fisher. This is the third book in the Tempris series that came out a couple weeks ago, not long ago.

[00:05:13] Um, obviously can't tell you much since it's a third book, but I am obsessed with this series. Um, it has everything you want in a romantic and the narrator from throne of glass. I think her name is Elizabeth Evans. I should have looked that up. Um, she narrates the series. So it's exceptional. Normally I prefer like the male main character to have like a male narrator, but when it's Elizabeth Evans. She's so good. I don't care.

[00:05:42] She's so good that I don't care. She could read any, she could read the newspaper, the phone book. And I would be like, did you see that audible contracted Teddy and Hamilton to make a joke video about him recording the dictionary? I think so. Yeah. I want to say it was like him, like reading a page of it or something like it was just reading. It was like random words, but reading them in his voice. Oh my God. They're like you asked. So we answered.

[00:06:11] Here you go. I mean, fair, fair. People did say that they would listen to the Hedy Hamilton narrate the dictionary. So fair play. Now, now do her. Right. Um, I am getting everything I want to say. I'm disappointed, but I'm terrified because there's like 10 hours left in the audio book. Oh, it's not good. This is not good. That's too early to be excited about anything. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:06:40] I'm scared. Yeah. Yeah. I'm going to call my mom. Um, we had a, this isn't really fandom related, but we had a life saving, um, rescue at my house. Um, I let my dogs out a few times. I think it was the day before you, it might've been yesterday, day before yesterday. And every time two of them kept going to the same spot and like barking and screaming. And so like, at first I was like, they're just being weird.

[00:07:10] There's something like, you know, a toy has gotten over there or something. So finally on the third time I go out there and there's a baby possum laying there. It could fit in my hand. Like he was little, um, in one hand. Um, and he was obviously like playing possum. He was scared to death, frozen. So thankfully right as I found him, Josh got home cause I was like, you're very cute. I'm not going to touch you. Yeah.

[00:07:39] I'm not going to touch. I can't do it. No, I can't. I'm going to stand here and tell you how cute you are. And I'm going to, you know, love on you from afar and tell you that you're precious, but I'm not going to be the one to pick you up. So he is alive, um, and not injured. And so then I'm like, I can't let you die because like we have hawks in our area. Foxes, random coyotes have been spotted.

[00:08:07] If I leave him there, no sign of mom, you know, like no sign. We looked all over. Um, so a friend of mine was like, I know a rehabber. So Josh took this little possum to the rehabbers house. She lives kind of like 20 minutes away, but it's kind of out. Like she's got a lot of land. And he said he pulls up and she has a gate with a code that she gave us. So he puts the code in and he left his window down.

[00:08:36] And as soon as he goes through the gate, something starts screaming. He's scared the shit out of him. And he looks up and it's a peacock sitting on the fence. And he gets through the peak past the screaming peacock. There's goats, there's donkeys, there's many horses, there's something teen dogs, a turkey.

[00:09:06] Um, he said it was like a zoo. And she's, he said she just took the box and she was like, do you want your towel back? And he was like, no, he can keep it. He's cozy. And she was like, he's so little. I can't, you know, you're so nice. So excited to help him. She just is an animal. Like, I love it. Like, even like the local animal shelter will tell you, like, call her for like wildlife. Like they're not going to take a possum. They're like, you found a weird turtle. Yeah. Call this lady.

[00:09:36] Okay. Um, I love that. Can we get a round of applause for Tallulah and Poochie being heroes? Lifesavers. Look at my babies go. Um, and then I'm almost done with Curses, Keys and Secret Societies by Brian Randall. More on that later. Yay. What did you do this week? I read a lot. Apparently.

[00:10:06] I read Reign of Shadows and Endings by Melissa K. Rolrick. Um, so every five years, the Fae and the Legacy gather for the selection, which is a ceremony where Legacy heirs are able to choose their personal source from among the Fae. So basically in order for Legacy to not like worry about their well of power running low, they're bonded to a Fae and are able to draw upon that Fae's power to kind of bolster their own so that their power doesn't get too low.

[00:10:35] Um, this is limited to only like the heirs of the like major families. I think it's like five or six families. Um, so then you have Tessalyn who was never meant to be chosen. In fact, she did everything that she could to be as unnoticeable as possible over the years so that whenever the heirs would come to the estates to like scope out the Fae to figure out who they were going to choose for the selection, she would not be chosen. She was like trying to be so un-extraordinary.

[00:11:04] She was doing everything in her power. Unfortunately for her, she makes an impression on the very elusive Arius heir who nobody even knows who he is because the Arius kingdom is so private. So she ends up sneaking away during like the kind of meet and greet time before the selection happens because she's starving. So she steals a piece of chocolate and runs in like outside into a corner to eat it. Oh no.

[00:11:34] And he finds her and she doesn't know who he is. So she's like talking back to him, even though he is a legacy and has more power than her. She's talking back to him and leaves an impression and finds herself chosen to be his source.

[00:11:51] And most Fae find this to be like a high honor, but she's like absolutely not because she's like a source basically becomes like they lose a lot of their free will and their ability to think and feel for themselves because once they're bonded to the legacy, their needs become the Fae's needs. And so she's like absolutely not. I refuse.

[00:12:17] So despite her the temptation to give up, lose herself, let herself be this man's source. She fights like hell to, you know, go against the fate that has been thrust upon her only to find out that their world has not been as forgotten by the gods as they thought they were. And she may be the reason why. Okay. Dun, dun, dun.

[00:12:47] It's, it's pretty good. I enjoyed it. It was a pretty quick read, even though it's like, it's high fantasy, right? So it like feels like there'll be a lot of world building. There's a lot of world building, but it goes by so fast. Like it's not convoluted. It was really, it was my first like read of this author and I really enjoyed it. So, and it looks like to me that it was indie to trad because I think it was just picked up by Kensington. Okay. And so, yeah, but I really enjoyed it.

[00:13:15] I mean, Laura Horowitz was the female narrator and love her. So yeah, it was very good. Um, I finished up Wings of Life by Megan Le Fay. Um, which I, yeah, I enjoyed that ending. I can't say anything about it, but yes, I did enjoy it. So I'm looking forward to the next one. Um, it was, I knew that there was going to be something and I couldn't quite figure out what it was.

[00:13:44] And then when it came, I was like, holy shit. So I'm ready for it. Um, and then The Night We Met by Abby Jimenez. So sometimes in life we are forced to make a split second decision and that can kind of change the course of your life, right? Just that one second can change everything. So for Larissa, this happens when she picks which guy to drive her home after a concert where she has met the perfect man.

[00:14:14] Her and Chris are really great together. They co-parent, you're going to love this. They co-parent a slightly unhinged little Yorkie who loves murdering things. I miss my slightly unhinged little Yorkie. His name is Woofereen. Woofereen. Yes. Um, and he is this little scrappy little rescue.

[00:14:39] Like they find him because they're walking back and they hear a sound behind like a dumpster and he just comes toggling out. He looks bad. Like he has been neglected, abandoned, whatever. He's like covered in who knows what. And he is just so scrappy and the sweetest little thing and is constantly bringing them dead animals. Like the time George Bailey dropped a dead frog at my feet.

[00:15:10] Yeah. Anyways, so they co-parent Woofereen together. They have their own little two person book club where they share their favorite books and discuss them with each other. And they are also like constantly rating different breads just as to how good they are. Like they are real. Real. That's real. Just great together. Unfortunately, Chris isn't the one who drove her home. He is her boyfriend's best friend.

[00:15:39] And all he wants is to see her happy. Even if that means he has to sit on the sidelines and watch the girl of his dreams with his best friend and build a life together. But this is a romance between these two. And the way that Abby is able to make this story feel so good, even though it's like a weird situation. And his best friend.

[00:16:04] It's like such a strange, and he's not the, he's not, he would never, ever, ever make a move on his best friend's girl. Yeah, on his best friend's girl. On anyone's girl, but especially not his best friend's girl. Yeah. For sure. But this man, this man, she is allergic to nuts. And he does everything in his power to make sure she never comes anywhere near any sort of nuts. No contact. Ever. Zero contact.

[00:16:31] Anytime they go on a road trip, he calls restaurants along the way ahead of time to find out if they are nut free or not. And then he's like, okay, we're going to stop here to eat because this is a safe place for you. And he does all of these little things behind the scenes. And he's very much like his best friend's, like Cyrano. He's in the back of his mind telling him like what you need to do and what you need to say and how you need to like take care of her. Because he is so obsessed with her. Yeah. Ugh.

[00:17:00] And Abby does it so well. And in her author's note at the end, she was like, there's this idea has been niggling since like her debut where she was like, what if she met the right guy at the wrong time? Like she was with the wrong person at the time and she met the right one and she can't do anything about it. And so this is kind of that story. And it's so good. Like Abby is so good at stories like these. And I loved it so much.

[00:17:29] Going from that to this next book was really disappointing. So I read The One and Only by Emily Giffen. And this was by far my least favorite of all her books so far that I've read. The writing was again, the writing was fine. Like she is an excellent writer. It's just the plot of the story that really gave me like, ugh. So you have Shay Rigsby. And so this description is not where it goes, but I will explain afterwards.

[00:17:56] So you have Shay Rigsby who has spent her entire life in Walker, Texas. It's a small college town that lives, breathes and dies for their college football team. Okay. She was raised alongside her best friend, Lucy, who is the daughter of Walker's legendary head coach. Shay's never wanted to leave Walker. She's even chosen to accept a job with the Walker athletic department after she attended Walker for college. So she's like all in. Like she is hometown, small town girl to the max.

[00:18:25] But then an unexpected tragedy throws the entire community into disarray. And she finds her entire world turned upside down and she starts questioning whether Walker is the right place for her. And she starts finding out some rather uncomfortable truths about the people around her. And like that premise in and of itself sounds good. Like it's not that sounds like it's going to be a really powerful story.

[00:18:50] Unfortunately, one of the uncomfortable truths that she figures out about the people around her is that she is in love with her best friend's dad. Yeah, I don't like it. I I'm sorry. Listen, I your best. My best friend's dad is asexual that like that. Right. And like even even like sex. Sexless. That's it. Don't exist. But here's the thing, right? Like age gap is fine. And like, but like it's your best friend's dad first.

[00:19:18] Like you like if he was any other person. That's a non sexual being. Right. But that is your best friend's dad. But what makes it worse? Okay. Okay. That's not a nice. It's worse. You see, it's worse. Okay. You know what makes it worse? It's worse. They grew up together. He raised her. No, that's not for me. And I just, I can't believe you didn't DNF that.

[00:19:47] I, cause there was another love story in this book. And I was like, okay, maybe this is, this is what, and it was not. That wasn't a judgment of you continuing. No, I'm just like, I think I would have had to DNF because. And like, here's the thing. I've read stories where it was like, the girl falls in love with her best friend's dad, but like she had, and her best friend had like a falling out and they weren't friends anymore. And they, and, but he never, he didn't raise her.

[00:20:15] Like, this is a man that she met as an adult, you know, like that's a different story. And then like, she wasn't friends with this person. And then like, after they, they, they had a falling out, like her, the, the dad was like, was just a friend to her. And then, you know, things happen. This is so completely different where she grew up with her best friend, her parents, her mom, their moms were best friends. They grew up together. Her mom was basically a single mom. So she grew up with a jail.

[00:20:45] If I was the mom, I was just, I, even if she was an adult, I would still go to jail. What do you mean? I, I could not. Like, I've joked, like, obviously they're not like best friends, but like characters. I'm like, I'll take Jughead Jones or your daddy. Right. Like they're our age or like Larry or George Russell. I can't, I just can't get over the fact that he raised her, but the best friend from childhood. He raised not just the best friend from childhood.

[00:21:15] He raised her. He was the father figure in her life because her dad left her and her mom. No. That's so gross and groovy. Immediate no. I can't. I cannot. Like, oh, mmm. I hope your next book was a palate cleanser. My next book was a Dawn of Onyx by Kate Golden, which was excellent. Good. Excellent. I ran out of time to finish my notes.

[00:21:44] So we're going to go try and summarize the story graph. So you have Arwen, who she never really expected to be the brave one of her family. She has been doing her best. She's just a girl. She's been trying to do her best to make sure that her family is doing okay now that her brother has been sent off to war. Okay. And it's been years and all of a sudden they stopped receiving letters from him and she is convinced that he's dead.

[00:22:13] And her family is like not wanting to accept that, but she's like in the back of their mind. She's like, he's gone. And she's trying to like accept that. She also has this like ability to like, okay, so this is a fantasy world. There is magic. There are witches. She has the ability to like heal people with her hands, but it's not in the same way that witches are able to heal people. So she's very confused where this power comes from, but she doesn't really question it because she can heal people.

[00:22:41] Um, she's unfortunately never been able to, her powers never been able to work on her mom, which really sucks because her mom is ill. They can't figure out what's wrong with her. They can't figure out, you know, a care, anything like that. So it's been a struggle. She's doing her best. She's like home remedies and things like that to keep her mom going. One night she gets home. She's talking to her mom and her little sister.

[00:23:05] The door bangs open and in walks her brother dripping with blood because he's got, he's been like, he's got this horrible like injury. And they're like, what the fuck is happening? And he's like, we need to leave. And so the war, he, his entire battalion was attacked. They were all killed and he somehow manages to get away.

[00:23:30] He had like hid behind a tree, gets away, does a dumb thing and steals money from the people who have just murdered his entire battalion and runs back to his home. And is like, we need to leave because they're right behind me. Well, they try, but then they unfortunately forget to bring the medicine for her mom with them. So she goes back to go get the medicine and is captured. Of course she is.

[00:23:57] There is one of the, their soldiers is like bleeding. Like, I'm sorry, sensor, but guts are out, like dying. I'm sorry. Um, and so she was like, wait, if I heal him, will you let me live? Like I can heal him. And so she goes, she heals him and they're like, great. You're coming with us. Yeah. Now you've done it. Now you've done it. Um, you've shown us what you can do.

[00:24:23] And so she is now taken away as a prisoner to like the, uh, king of darkness. The stuff. Yeah. Bad place. Um, place that, hi, Roma has decided to be part of the conversation. Um, and you know, so she's like this kingdom that everybody fears. And this is the, these are the, the soldiers that her, her, uh, empire kingdom are fighting against.

[00:24:52] Um, the onyx kingdom, huh? It's in the title of the book. I'm really smart. Um, and so she ends up there and she ends up finding herself. Roma, I need you to calm down. She ends up finding herself a, uh, the healer to the onyx kingdom. And she inadvertently meets like the king who she thought was like this awful, terrible, horrible person. Hmm.

[00:25:23] But turns out he might not be this awful, horrible, terrible person. And maybe he's really hot. Oh, that always helps. Maybe she's going to stick around and maybe there's more to this war that he started than she thought. Interesting. He's like, tell me more. Roma, please stop. He's, I don't know what's happening. Okay. So yes, I enjoyed that.

[00:25:52] Um, then I read the dawn chorus by Samantha Shannon, which is book 3.5 of the bone season series. So it's a little novella between books. Oh God. Three and four. Stop it. He's driving me crazy. Um, so obviously I can't say much. Um, it is like, there are kind of two timelines. There's a timeline where she's still in ox, Oxford, Oxford, Oxford, Oxford. Why am I not remembering? She's still trapped.

[00:26:20] And the present day where she's like trying to recover from being tortured. Um, and Paige is still just such a badass, even though she's literally been tortured. So much torture. It was so bad. But she's, she's powering through because she is a badass. And then just today. Oh, hey. Hi, Poochie. Poochie showed up. Yeah. And then just today I finished Finley Donovan crosses the line, which is book five and the

[00:26:50] Finley Donovan series by El Cosmano. Um, they, I mean, they're like mystery novels. So it's like they kind of stand alone, but there is an overarching plot kind of thing. Cause like you do need to know who these people are, but you could also probably read them as standalones if you really wanted to. I don't know why you would want to because it's a good time. You should read them in order. Yeah. You should read them in order. Um, so yeah.

[00:27:16] So this one you have, uh, Veronica is, um, who is Finley's nanny slash best friend, uh, slash accountant, um, who has been, uh, put under house arrest at her mom's house in Maryland. And Finley and, uh, Javier, who is Veronica's boyfriend, um, haven't heard from her in a couple of days and they're worried. So they drive out to Maryland to be like, are you okay?

[00:27:44] And they get there and, and she's fine. But then they're like, you know what? We're going to solve this mystery because obviously you're not guilty of stealing this money from your former sorority house. And so we're going to prove your innocence. And so it's just an entire book about them avoiding being like caught, Veronica being caught out while under house arrest while trying to investigate. And it's, it's just crazy. Good time. Um, yeah.

[00:28:14] And I started the, why did I say the, I started release me, which is book two of series two. I knew you couldn't have finished it because you would have texted me when you got to the, oh, I, yeah, I was, I was, I was like being, I finished Finley Donovan. And then I was like, I still have time at work. So I'm going to start a new book. And the next one was released me. And I was like, I'm not supposed to drive when I'm listening to this because I'm scared. But then I was like, I'm not going to get anywhere near there. Yeah.

[00:28:43] I'm like, I'm not going to get anywhere near there. So when I'm driving, so this is just, it's fine. We're fine. Everything's air jail. We're fine. Um, and then I'm about like 50% of the way through Chris's keys and secret societies. So I'm getting there. I'm getting there. And, and oh God. Okay. That was my week.

[00:29:11] Do you have a fictional boyfriend this week? Chris. Chris from the night we met. This man is so good to her behind the scenes with zero credit. So not even just zero credit, but he gives credit to other people for the things he does for her. Like there's one part where like it snows and she has to be up really early to get to work.

[00:29:37] And so she has to get up even earlier in order to shovel out her car. And he is like, that is so unsafe. And her boyfriend doesn't have the mind to do it for her. So he wakes up, drives across town way before she's up and shovels out her car, shovels a path to her door and then leaves and doesn't say anything to anybody. And just does that for her.

[00:30:05] And it's like, and then there's a point where like, they go to this like lake house a couple of times. Every time before he gets, cause her boyfriend goes up there. It's like his family's house, I think. And every time they go up there, Chris calls him and he's like, Hey, make sure you like take out, get rid of your peanut butter or get rid of any nuts and all of these beforehand. And every time he gets up there, there's peanut butter, he opens the cupboard, peanut butter,

[00:30:34] nuts, granola bar, all of that stuff. And he's like, what the fuck dude? So he grabs a trash bag and takes it all out and throws it away without saying anything to anybody. It just does it. And there's one part where she like, she like crashes into him and is like, Oh, I'll take that out. You go get changed. Cause they're going to go like swim or something. And she takes it and goes to the, to the trash and throws it out and like happens to see like the bag opens a little and she's like, Oh my God, it's all of like the peanut butter and stuff.

[00:31:02] Like that was so sweet of him, but she still doesn't like realize that he's done all of the things for her. And it's like, I will say though. And I know I make like the boyfriend sound like awful because he doesn't do anything for her. There's a reason that he's bad. But there is also a moment where it's so good because, and this is kind of spoilery, but

[00:31:27] there is a moment where the boyfriend says to Chris, he's like, she wasn't the great love of my life. You are, and I'm going to change myself so that you'd be proud. And I was like, I love when men love each other. No, that's sweet. But anyways, Chris from the night we met may a love like that. Find me. Yeah. He's such a good man.

[00:31:56] How about you? Um, Sky Emerus, the man that you are. He's from Don, Don Bringer, um, Shardless Acolyte and Don Bringer. Um, he's, I always say that he's 80 and Ash River if the author had been nice to him. I remember this. He, he's so sweet and he like their childhood best friends and they grew up together and he

[00:32:25] has been in love with her forever. He has been dying inside and pining and now she's finally starting to see him. Oh, it is everything I've wanted. You know, I, you know, I love a yearny King, so he's a yearny boy. We love yearning. And I also love the American Logan Carter from, um, I mean, yeah, I love me some Dean Winchester. You, you gotta, how do you not? So. How do you not? I can't not.

[00:32:55] I do also really love Alejandro. Oh yeah. He's so funny. I love him so much. He kills me. Oh my God. Yeah. That sound means we have an intruder alert. Our girl is back. Our girl is back. We've got Brianne Randall. We're talking curses, keys and secret societies. Yay. Welcome back, girly. Thank you. Thank you. All right.

[00:33:25] You know, you know, we have to start with the hardest question of all. Okay. Can you give us the elevator pitch of the book? Okay. The elevator pitch is a very simple. I mean, this is like as elevator as it gets, but a witchy dark academia romance with a Dean Winchester inspired love interest set at a sentient French chateau in well in France. A French chateau in Greece. In fact.

[00:33:57] Okay. Where did the story come from? Okay. So. I'm not. I'm not. Other than your love of supernatural and Dean Winchester. Yeah. Other than my love of supernatural. I'm so excited because I've only gotten to answer this question once and it was in written form. So when I was about, I was 14 years old, we went to France, French countryside, and we visited this town called. I'm on C. Lefranc.

[00:34:25] And it is a tiny little French village straight out of beauty and the beast. It is like you could possibly imagine. So there's on C. Lefranc and there's a town called new years, which is like the neighboring village town. Um, and then kind of in between them, there is a giant chateau. Um, and it is called Chateau d'Ancy Lefranc. So in the book it's called Chateau d'Ancy.

[00:34:51] Um, and it was, I mean, it, it was mind blowing to me at the time. And it still kind of is. And I just remember standing in front of it, looking at it, saying to myself one day, I'm going to write a book here, like that set here. And so, you know, many, many moons later, um, it happened and it just, it was, it was so inspiring. So that was the inspiration for the setting.

[00:35:16] And then I just turned it into a dark academia, like graduate level, which college basically. Um, and other than that, I knew, you know, it's a continuation from spells. It can be read as a standalone, but Alea is Lucian's sister from book one. Uh, and so it's, it's her story of just basically going back home and kind of reclaiming her, her birthright and her power. Oh my gosh. I love her so much.

[00:35:43] And there's so much like within this world that you've built, there's kind of like this lore, right? Between the light crafters and the shadow crafters. Um, what was, what, what was the process of developing that and figuring out like what that history was and how it was going to be like changing in this modern day and this story that you're actually telling?

[00:36:03] I think, you know, in the beginning, when I first started creating it, um, I just knew that there had to be disparate factions when it came to, uh, the, the different sides of magic essentially. Because I knew that I needed the two main characters, uh, to be butting heads. And so it kind of, it kind of made itself in a sense because I knew that the sisters, you know, the Petridi sisters from spells were going to be light workers essentially.

[00:36:32] Like they were drawing from the magic of the earth. And so to me, the opposite of that is drawing from the magic of self, like the well of self. Um, because I do believe that the craft, which is what it's called when, you know, shadow craft and light craft are unified, um, is a reflection of witchcraft and the craft. And so to kind of split it down the middle and have, okay, here we're drawing from self and here we're drawing from nature.

[00:36:58] Nature demands balance, but yourself really doesn't because you can go too far and it's really dangerous. And so that kind of, it was born out of that ideology in essence, but it kind of just steamrolled from there, I think. Yeah. And we knew going in that this book was written with a Dean, Dean Winchester love interest, but we got a little surprise with Alex.

[00:37:27] Um, and I love a love triangle. I live and breathe and die for a love triangle. I'm sorry, but like, I love love triangle. But with Logan being based on Dean Winchester, I need you to walk us through the feelings that you felt when you got the photo of Jensen Ackles holding your book. I'm like, where is it? I wish I could. I mean, I know it's a podcast, so you couldn't see it, but I'll send it to you so you can attach it somehow to the episode. Maybe I'll do it.

[00:37:55] It was, I was like a giddy school child. Like I was a little, I was a giddy little girl because it was just, I mean, what, what? Right. Right. And it was so many things had to go right for that to happen too. Girl. It went through so much. It was because I didn't get to take it because it was at, um, it was at one of the supernatural conventions and I can't remember what state it was in, but the, the cost was astronomical for me to be, to fly there.

[00:38:25] To attend a convention, to do the photo op, et cetera, all these things. And I was like, just simply not realistic. Unrealistic. I put a call out on threads and I was like, if anybody's going to a supernatural convention, please let me know. And this girl responded and she's just, she's such a sweetheart and just was like, send me the book and I will take it with me. And she, but all of the photo ops were sold out. Um, and she was like, I'll keep an eye out. And if one pops up, I'll send it to you.

[00:38:53] So, so she did and she actually ended up, she paid for it. And then I Venmo'd her for it because it was too hard for, you know, whatever. So anyway, she did it. She took it. She had him sign and she was like, she told him that the character was inspired by him. And he like smiled and laughed and, you know, took the pictures and he took the first one. And it was, he was like, Oh wait, my, my thumb's covering her name. Let me, let me move my thumb. Let me take it. So he was like really serious about like making it a good photo.

[00:39:21] Oh, that is incredible. Like I'm with you on the supernatural love. Yes. Like my first job, we didn't have a DVR. We had like a VHS, VCR, whatever. And if I was at work, my sister would have to go in and record supernatural in those first few seasons so that I could sit in front of my little like 10 inch TV and watch it. You know? So like, I cannot imagine.

[00:39:51] Yeah. I cannot imagine. Yeah. You know, it's so fascinating because with cult classics like that, it really does create such an instant emotional bond and connection with, with the show and, but with other people. Like I was in New Zealand. Okay. And I was at Weta Workshop, which is where they do all of the like costuming and makeup, special effects and stuff for all the movies, like Lord of the Rings and all the things.

[00:40:19] And I had a little heart shaped pen on my bag, on my purse of Dean Winchester. And the girl at the checkout was like, oh my gosh, do you like Dean Winchester? And I was like, can I tell you something? She's like, yeah. I wrote a book where the love interest is inspired by him. She's like, I need it. What's it called? Give it to me now.

[00:40:43] So it's just so funny because it's like, it really is so unifying and it's so just, there's like a, there's just a comfort level and like an emotional level to it that is just very satisfying. I love fandom culture in general. Like as long as it doesn't get toxic. Yeah. Oh my God. Yes. Yes. It can get very toxic. Yeah. But when it's good, it's good. Yes, absolutely.

[00:41:13] And I love that so much. Speaking of Supernatural, you weaved in quite a few little Easter eggs. Yes. I'm sitting here reading and I was like family business. Family business. Okay. So here's the thing though is that I went, because when I was writing it, I was just going off of vibes, like purely like I had, I had an outline, but at the end of the day, I'm just, you know, sitting at my computer, a little fandom nerd. Is Dean Winchester going to follow an outline? No, no, no.

[00:41:43] Rip it up, throw it out the 1967. That's Sammy shit. He'd be there with like his little red pen. Like, no, this is what I would do. I did some research. So yeah, no, didn't follow anything.

[00:41:59] But when I was editing it, because what the you guys have the advanced reader copy, and there were more edits that were made after it because I was going through and I was like, trying because when I was writing, I'm like trying to find the balance of close, but not too close. But wanting people who had never seen Supernatural to be like, oh, wow, maybe I want to watch Supernatural. And I've literally gotten messages from people being like, oh my gosh, I've never even heard of Dean Winchester, but I read it. And now I'm going to start, I'm starting to watch Supernatural. I'm like, oh my.

[00:42:29] Yes. To watch it for the first time. Yeah. Wonderful. Right. Hello. I'm scared. It's like dark out. I'm a teenager. And it's like, these scary things are happening. And I was a baby.

[00:42:57] And I remember it so clearly. That is so cool to have people like getting into it now because of you. I mean, that's my claim to fame at any point. I'll take it. You've made me watch Supernatural. Yes. If that's all I'm known for, I'll take it. Yeah. Okay. I think Alaya might be my favorite of your FMCs so far. I don't know. It's just something about her that's so raw and real.

[00:43:27] And I'm just here for her. Can you tell me like what little bits of you went into her and like what aspects of her personality were like most important for you to have for to you for her to have? That's a really good question. I think she realistically, I think she's probably the most, the least like me of the characters that I have written.

[00:43:49] Um, the thing I think though, where we are similar, um, is that she does forgive people very easily, probably a little too easily. And that is, that's very much me. Like that's one thing we do have in common. I am. And you can walk all over me. I'll be like, it's okay. It's fine. It happens. And you know, whatever. So that's, you know, there's a, there's a line where boundaries need to be drawn and I'm not very good at those. So she, I think probably struggles with that a little bit too, but everything else.

[00:44:18] I mean, I really wanted her to be, um, charming in a sense, not on purpose, obviously, but just in a way that people around her kind of gravitate towards her. Um, because she is like, she has been through a lot and she still has, I would say quite a positive disposition.

[00:44:37] Um, and I think that's also really important to her character because it does allow her to process through things in a different way than I think other people who struggle with kind of like holding on to bitterness. And, um, what's that word? When you, a grudge, like holding on to grudges. Yeah. But there are, um, there's, um, there's, um, quite a cast of characters that like, we have new people that are introduced.

[00:45:03] We have some familiar faces and, and you also decide to, you know, throw some tragedy at us really early on because you're really mean. You're really mean. Tell me more. I don't remember. Did you block it out? You're like, well, we've watched a few people already. Yeah. I mean, listen, all I know is that what you read, because I made it way worse.

[00:45:29] My editor was like, do you think we should maybe not kill off this like really sweet character that you, and maybe like, let's keep this character alive too. And I was like, all right, fine. So what are you talking about? So you're meaner. Okay, cool. Yeah. Oh, wait. Love it. Okay. But anyways, my question was her name. Lottie. Lottie. Lottie. Oh, Lottie. Yeah. Yes. Yes. Yes. She was. Sorry, Lottie.

[00:46:00] Spoiler again. Spoiler alert. I was fine with Dorian. But. Oh, yeah. Bye, Dorian. Yeah. Bye. Lottie. That was, that was, I was not expecting that. I was like, excuse me. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Yeah. I, when I, the, when I first, like up until like literally, I think the second developmental edit I had, um, I had, yeah, I had many more people dying. I had Kalani. I killed Kalani. No, you didn't. I did.

[00:46:30] Now come on. My editor was literally like, I don't think so. No. Be reasonable here. Like too dark, too dark. Too dark. You can't do this to us. What happened to her cards? We're fragile. Okay. We're fragile. I can't do it. Oh my goodness. Oh my gosh. My actual question was going to be, was what, did you have like a favorite character to write into the, like, cause they're all so. You can't say Logan.

[00:47:00] He was probably so fun. I didn't love writing Logan. Can I just like very much sidebar when I was, I was writing a scene with Logan and I was like, I went back and reread it. I was like, I think this is like a direct quote, like from the show. And I like did a bunch of research and I don't even remember what the exact quote was, but like, basically he kills a rave. And then there's like raves, like, like I core, like blood all over his boots. And he's like, you son of a bitch. These are my favorite boots. Are you asshole?

[00:47:30] Or something like something very Dean Winchester. And I, so I'm like doing all this research and I cannot find anything on like any of these combination of words. And I'm like, I think I just wrote it so much like him. And so it's like, oh yeah. Okay. No, that was just me coming. Yeah. He was super fun to write, but I think Alejandro was probably my favorite. I literally love him so much. He's inspired by one of my best friend's fiancees.

[00:48:00] They're engaged now, which is the cutest. And so, yeah, so he's actually the friend that I co-wrote my high fantasy with Mackenzie Gold. So he lives near me. He's like 45 minutes. So we get together and we write and we have a bar to steer in the threads of chaos. So his fiancee inspired Alejandro.

[00:48:25] And it was just like the way he talks is exactly how his fiancee talks. And he was like, girl, you wrote a character after me. My favorite thing is like reading Alejandro. Like I could, I felt like this is a person, you know, like this is a person in your life. Like I know that this is a person. Yeah. If they're not in your life, you're going to find them.

[00:48:52] A little bit with every, like I, I think anchor points for me are very important because it does lend. You can, I mean, you can create a character from the ground up, you know, that is completely not like anybody, you know, but I feel like when you do that, you're trying so hard not to make them like anybody, you know, that it kind of sets them apart in a sense that they don't feel real. Right.

[00:49:19] So for me, like having those anchor points of like at least a couple, like a characteristic or two, you know, right. Brings them to life in my mind. Yeah, for sure. Sure. Okay. Well, we want to keep you forever, but we promised we wouldn't. So we'll do, we got to get to our, um, like questions we always ask. Yes. Ask. Um, you know, we have a section on the podcast that we call fictional boyfriend of the week

[00:49:47] where we pick a fictional character that we're really vibing with this week. Logan was one of mine this week. Sorry. She said it can't be. It can't be Dean Winchester. We already know you have to pick somebody else. Yeah. Anybody? Movies, TV, books. Um, um. Doesn't have to be a boyfriend. Okay. Okay. This is so hard. I'm like obsessed. And when I say obsessed, I mean, I get, you know, ADD, neurodivergent. I get very hyper fixated.

[00:50:17] Um, and I have been like Killian Murphy has been my guy for he's perfect. Like he is literally perfect. I don't understand, but there's something about him that is effeminate and masculine. Yes. Yes. Yes. He is stunningly beautiful to me. And I just love him so much. And his character in Peaky Blinders, all time favorite. Like Tommy Shelby is yes. Immediate yes for me always.

[00:50:46] Ironically, very much less so actual Killian Murphy. I'm like, listen, Killian Murphy, I'd like to have a cup of tea with you and chat about books. Tommy Shelby, different story. Yeah. That's fair. That's really fair. Yeah. Yeah. Um, I love his fake laugh. That's my favorite thing. Like, have you ever seen him in interviews where he like, yeah, on it? I die. Oh my gosh.

[00:51:14] When he's like the interviewer is like, um, how do you feel about the disappointed Killian Murphy meme? And he's like, what's him? Oh my gosh. Yeah. That's a good one. I mean, that's, I'd have to say that's my answer or alternatively kind of got a thing for Justin Bieber. Look, people have made fun of me for years, but like when I met my husband, my ringtone was baby. Okay.

[00:51:43] Like to be very honest, like I could, you could hold me at gunpoint and I wouldn't be able to tell you a single Justin Bieber lyric or song. He sings. I don't know what he sounds like, but I know that he is really cute. He really is. Yeah. He's got the swagger. He's got the swagger down. Yeah. I'm with you. I'm here for Bieber and I always have been. So I don't blame you. Oh man. All right.

[00:52:13] The next question that, you know, we always ask is obviously we love and are obsessed with your books, but we'd love to know what do you love and obsess over? What books are you reading right now? What are you recommending? Do you have any all time favorites? It's anything we need to drop everything to pick up right now. For me personally, Blood of Hercules and Bonds of Hercules have been my top two reads in the like two of my top reads in the last year.

[00:52:42] Um, I'm obsessed with those books. Now I have heard people say that they've listened to the audio book and they don't love it. And I get that because it's a very specific storytelling type. And the main character is like, I don't know, but I, I don't listen to audio books. I can't speak to that. However, the books themselves. I just think they are freaking hilarious. They're sexy. They're powerful. The storytelling is incredible.

[00:53:11] I like, we'll call like, yes. Rooftops. Shout. Okay. I'm adding them, like moving them up on my TBR. Love those. Um, and then I just found a book called, let me look it up really fast. Um, this is where we can use our music, our Jupiter music, our Jupiter music. I was like, what did we used to call it?

[00:53:38] We call it because we couldn't call it Jeopardy because it wasn't Jeopardy music. Yes, that's right. It's called the Arcana Trials, um, by Juniper Blair. It's, um, a witchy hunger games with a Damon Salvatore inspired love interest. Every century, 22 witches are chosen by a cursed Arcana deck to come, to compete for unimaginable power. And I was like, I haven't read it yet, but I'm instantly was like, that's moving to the top of my TBR. Yes. Sold.

[00:54:08] Yeah. That sounds sold. Yeah, I know. Right. I was like, dang. So that's my next read. Okay. I love it. I will have to read that with you. Yeah. Um, all right. Right. What can you tell our listeners? Like what comes next? I know like we're releasing this book, but like what, what's coming down the pipeline? Okay. Publicly. Yeah. May 26th, we've got Curses, Keys and Secret Societies.

[00:54:36] And then starting in 2027, I will have a minimum of two books coming out a year. Which is, dates that I can say are, um, May 1st in the U.S. and May 5th in the UK for my high fantasy series. The first is called The Seer and the Threads of Chaos.

[00:54:58] Um, and that is basically a fan, a high fantasy where all of the deities from all of the pantheons are actually Fae who instituted themselves as gods on earth to draw power from the people's worship. Um, and that is, it's just like a super fun, very classic high fantasy, uh, adventure. And I'm like, I love it so much. Uh, so that is in May, 2027.

[00:55:25] And then in fall, 2027, I have a secret romantic book, but we'll be coming out. Um, and then probably 2028, 2027. Yeah, probably 2028, I'll have another like witchy, um, you know, what's the word I'm looking for? Witchy, cozy, you know, contemporary romantic. So we're going to be well-fed for a while. We're going to be well, well-fed. And what's so crazy is that they're all so different.

[00:55:53] Like the Seer and the Threads of Chaos, like I said, very classic high fantasy. Um, and then the romantic is like super extra spicy, very, very extra, super spicy and fun. Um, and then like cozy contemporary, very, you know, that's like the opposite of both of those books. It's like, are you like low stakes Hallmark? Oh, are you writing all of these at the same time? Or do you like finish one project and then jump into the next? Like, how are you keeping everything straight?

[00:56:23] It's crazy. I mean, I did plan out the two main series for 27, 20 and 20, 2029. Uh, so that they're kind of alternating. So right now I'm working on, um, book two in the chaos series, even though it won't be coming out until 2028, but we're so ahead of schedule with the first book. And then I'm waiting on developmental edit, developmental edits for the romantic. So it's like, I switched back and forth.

[00:56:49] And then usually I'm working on two projects at the same time because I had that the way my brain works. Like I have to have two projects. That's fair. That's fair. Yeah. Be able to turn one off and jump into this one. Have a distraction. Yes. Yes. Yes. Precisely. Well, as you know, this is the part where we do have to give you bad news, which is that you have to come back. Okay. Every single one of those books. Every single one.

[00:57:18] And we're going to have so much. Never. You're going to be like, oh, damn it. She has another book coming out. No. And actually, uh, this is also the time where we manifest. Oh, yeah. Versus. Yes. New York Times. New York Times. Best seller. New York Times. Instant. New York Times. Best seller. I love the sound of that. I love the sound of that. It's got a ring to it. It's just perfect. Yes. Yes. Yes. It's going to happen. So go to me.

[00:57:47] So we will see you in 2027 and 2028 and 2029. And we're all going to be old and gray one day and still talking about your books. I am already gray. Same. All over the place. But we're not old yet. We're just gray. Yeah. Primitively. You just, you just got to keep coming back. I'll be here. All the books. All the books. Every single book. It's the rules. It's the rules.

[00:58:16] We don't make the rules. But we do enforce them. It's like players, you know. I obviously don't watch sports. I'm calling them players. But, you know, they have like the superstitions and the socks. We're the same one. Yeah. I have to be on the Incoherent Fan Girls podcast. Yeah. And we have to say. New York Times. Yes. New York Times. New York Times. All the things. All right. Well, when this episode releases, the book won't be out yet. So you guys can still pre-order.

[00:58:47] Chris's Keys and Secret Societies. If you get it from Rubies, there's pre-order goodies. Check out Brienne's. Fun with like fun, fun things. Fun stuff. Fun stuff. And if you are local to like the Sacramento area, May 31st, she's going to be in conversation with Stephanie Garber. Yeah. It's very cool. Yes. It's super fun. It's going to be great. Lots coming up. Everybody go. Yeah. Go to your favorite bookstore and pre-order it now.

[00:59:17] Because we're putting her on the New York Times bestseller list. Yeah. And you could say I ordered that ahead of time. Like I was ahead of all of this. It's ahead of the curve. I was there when that happened, guys. I contributed to New York Times. Okay. I did it. I'm very involved in this process. Hey, it would. I mean, my whole career exists because people give me a chance.

[00:59:45] So I love it so much. We love you. I would never not. Thank you, Brianne, for doing this. I'm always coming back. We love you so much. We love you so much. I love you so freaking much. Monday we'll get to like actually like do something together. Together. Yes. Them's the rules. Them's the rules. Them's the rules. They got to come to California. Oh, no. How terrible for you. I know.

[01:00:15] I hate it here. It's the worst. Terrible. Just so bad. I'm fine. It feels clever. I know. Awful. Oh, my goodness. Thank you, Brianne. This has been so much fun. Talk to you next year. Yeah. You too. I mean, maybe before that. I don't know. We'll just have you just come back for funsies. Okay, perfect. We'll just hang out. We'll have our own little book club on Zoom. Yes. Exactly.

[01:00:45] All right. We'll talk soon. I love her so much. I cannot explain to you how much I adore her, how proud I am of her. We had her for her debut, and there are so many exciting things coming from her. I'm going to throw up. I'm so happy for her. I'm going to cry. Yeah. Oh, yay. I love you, Brianne.

[01:01:15] Her and Hannah. Like, there's just something about Brianne Randall and Hannah Nicole Mayer that, like... I would love to just sit in the room with the two of them. I want to have a sleepover. Yes. Ugh. I feel like it would be so fun. The best time. Yeah. The best time. Okay. Time for an announcement. If Roma ever calms the F down... I forgot my book. It's over there. Over there. It's okay.

[01:01:45] But next week, we're really excited because we're talking to Andy Pliego again. We're going to talk about... Oh, I hit my mic. The library after dark. Roma is going to try and eat this. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I can't wait to start reading it. I can't wait. Oh, my God. Andy is such a great writer. I'm so excited. I know. I'm so excited. Are you excited? He's so excited because he won't leave me alone. Same. What is with these boys today? They are so needy today. Oh, my goodness.

[01:02:14] I just want to love you. Pooch, what is this posture? He's so cute. He's a monster. Demon. No, he's a good boy. He's a demon. I'm a hero. He says, this is what heroics looks like. Whoa. It does. That is what a hero looks like. I'm a possum saver. All right. Okay. Now it's time for a spiel. Let's do a spiel. Okay, friends. Oh, are you? Roma wants to try, but he doesn't know how to say it.

[01:06:05] It's our paranormal horror true crime content streaming platform where by the time you're hearing this, it's over, but we're currently in the middle of the dead of spring. Which is our halfway to Halloween event where we're dropping new content every day. So that's been really exciting. And if you use code fangirl10, you'll get 10% off of your subscription if you'd like to subscribe. And last but not least, I wrote a book.

[01:06:35] It's called The Living in the Dead. I love that you have it more accessible than I do. I accidentally put a book on top of it. One of the friends is going to bedazzle me a copy and then I'll have that. I'm going to bedazzle me a copy and then I'll have that ready. It's a romantic fantasy about a girl named Abby who was born a ghost but ages like the living and they're not supposed to do that. And it's about the reaper who would die to get her to look at him. Just a peek. I like it. Just one little glance.

[01:07:05] Just one look at me, please. Please. And I'm on all the major retailers' websites or you can go to my website, aepervis.com. If you use code Erin Warner, you'll get 10% off because it would not be me if I didn't make something with my book about Erin Warner. He's literally in the acknowledgments. He is indeed. And that was the Incoherent Fan Girl.
