Due to some last minute timezone issues, The Fangirls were without a guest this week, but they do talk about the things that are going to help them survive the film adaptation of SUNRISE ON THE REAPING in November.

[00:00:00] He looks like a head, doesn't he? He really does. Well, that's the exact face that you make when you say it. That's perfect. That's the perfect name. Welcome to The Incoherent Fangirl. We're recording late and I'm delirious. I'm just sleepy girl. I'm asleep. I am Karin from the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego.

[00:00:30] I'm Mandy of the Court of Dreams. Oh, I wonder what that could be. You know those guys. Back to the podcast friends. Alright, in our timeline it is September 24th and somehow in y'all's timeline it's October 2nd. I don't know how. It's October.

[00:00:58] Time has no meaning. It's all a lie. I don't understand. It freaks me out, man. It really, I just, I'm unwell. Yeah. For sure. I mean I like it because you know the holidays are coming up but also I don't like it. I don't like it either. Time flies man. It's weird. Okay, this week in Fangirling, what did you do Mandy?

[00:01:27] Well, it started out on a bit of a bummer. We lost another dog. So that's, if you're counting, three since this time last year. This was Tallulah, our Basset Hound. She's a little bit different because Harry was 10 years old and he was robbed of time. Right? He should have had more years.

[00:01:51] Georgie was 14 but it was so sudden and he had so many health problems in the last couple of years of his life that it was like so abrupt. With her, Basset Hounds tend to live between 10 and 12 years. So we had, you know, more time than we thought we would with her.

[00:02:11] She just was starting to slow down and, you know, show signs of age and then she just like, you know, it did that gradually for a while and then she just like stopped eating. She wouldn't, she couldn't walk on her back legs. She would go to the bathroom where she was like she couldn't even try, which was like I had diapers on her. She was fine. I would have, if it was like, hey, it's just her back legs don't work. Right. But everything else is great.

[00:02:40] I would have changed this dog's diaper and carried her around for years. Right. But everything pointed to end of life. A lot of other things that I won't get into but so we had to say goodbye on Saturday, which was brutal because my husband was out of town. But we knew she wasn't gonna last long and I didn't, we didn't want her to suffer to wait for him. But I didn't think she was gonna last either. So my mom and I went.

[00:03:11] We helped her over the rainbow bridge but honestly I think she was gone with the sedative that they gave before. Like she just, it's like she just kind of heaved a big sigh and it was like the most relieved sound. And I was loving on her and telling her, you know, telling her what a good girl she was and about all the people who love her. So yeah, it was a bit of a shitty week. I'm not gonna lie. It's been kind of hard over here.

[00:03:41] The night before she passed, we had a little bit of a fangirl night, I guess. We picked her up and put her on the couch with me, which she hadn't laid on the couch for a long time in a while. And we watched Howl's Moving Castle. So if you don't know, if you've never watched Howl's Moving Castle, we've got Sophie. She's a young hat maker. She runs into a wizard named Howl who, she's on her way to see her sister and he saves her from some monsters, some creeps.

[00:04:09] She gets home and the Witch of the Waste is there and she transforms Sophie into an old crone because she'd had a little moment with Howl and she's like, his heart belongs to me. And if you've seen the Witch of the Waste, wow. That's a hot mama there. And so she makes her an old crone and she says you can't tell anyone about the curse.

[00:04:38] So she takes off into the world and comes across a scarecrow who leads her to Howl's Moving Castle. It has legs and it like crawls around. She meets his apprentice, Markle, and a fire demon, Calcifer, who is, he's basically the magic behind the castle. And they strike up a deal. Calcifer will break her curse if she'll free him from like being bound to Howl and like being the magic of the castle. And then they tell Howl that she's a cleaning lady. There's a war going on.

[00:05:08] The king wants Howl to fight. Chaos ensues. But it's a beautiful, good time. So we watched Howl's Moving Castle with all of our spooky Halloween decorations out. And snuggled with my girl on the couch. When the show husband got home, we watched, I think we were an episode or two behind. We caught up on Ted Lasso, but not this week. We're very far in, obviously. I can't tell you much, but I was right.

[00:05:39] Things are happening a lot faster than I thought, but. I've been continuing my ACOTAR reread. I'm in Silver Flames right now. I saw a quote posted by Bloomsbury. So it's not a spoiler. That we're getting a Lucian point of view. Which. That's almost all I could have dreamed of. Obviously, I would love to like get a Dorian. There's Dorian. Kale said.

[00:06:09] No, Kale, I fear is probably long dead. But. Who knows? I'm picking up on a lot of Throne of Glass references in Silver Flames that I didn't the first time, but that's been five years ago. Just now. I'm not going to give any spoilers, but like Nesta is running towards the north and the scent of pine and snow. That's Terrison. It's Terrison. It's Rowan.

[00:06:39] Oh my God. So I'm pretty confident that my Throne of Glass babies are coming back and I'm going to be happy and devastated. In equal measure, probably. And then my dog died. So I was like. Not a complaint at all. Okay. I love. I love what we do, but a lot of my life lately has been ACOTAR reread and read for the podcast

[00:07:07] podcast and not ever the TBR that you like. I really just want to read that book for no reason. So I was like, I'm going to read what I, I want to read the podcast books. Okay. But I'm also going to read what I want with no obligations. No, you know, nothing. Yeah. So I picked up Long Live by VB Lacey because I kept seeing videos on Facebook about it.

[00:07:30] It, it gives like the teasing is it's gives Klaus Michelson, Anthony Bridgerton hook from Once Upon a Time yearning. Hmm. Like that she'll show scenes of like Klaus and Caroline and a laptop will slam and it's her book. And I'm like, listen, you always can sell me with Klaus Michelson. Today. Today. I just need it. You've probably seen it, but I need the listeners to be outraged.

[00:07:57] I saw a fan cast on Beyonce's internet today where somebody cast Joseph Morgan as Tamlin in ACOTAR. Get out of my face. Get off this earth. Prison. Go to jail right now. Joseph Morgan could never be Tamlin. That is outrageous. That is outrageous.

[00:08:27] It literally, I like literally clutched my throat. Like I was looking for, I was like, terrible. Go to jail. The internet is a scary place. Oh, all right. Anyways, Long Live is book one in the elementals of Iona duology. So we have Isla Beltair. She lives with her twin Arden and their father. And it's a very, it gives very, the inventor's daughter vibes.

[00:08:53] So like her family like makes weapons and like, they're basically salesmen kind of. They make their wares and sell them. So her father and brother leave and travel to different fairs and stuff to sell their wares. And she stays behind and takes care of the home. So I'm like, they're taking Philippe, you know, like, Oh no. So two years prior to where the book starts, she lost both her mother and the man she loved.

[00:09:22] Very close together. And she's just finally getting to a point where she can claw her way out of the grief. Cause she very much like turtled it in. She was not sharing her feelings with anybody. She wouldn't talk to anybody about it, anything. So her best friend is Bree who often stays with Isla when Arden and their dad are away. And she, they have like a, they go out drinking with a lot of their friends.

[00:09:49] And Isla has a run in with a mysterious white blonde stranger in a bar. And he like orders her to go home and forget. We ever, you ever saw me. And she's like, who the fuck are you not going to do that? And he's like, he like is taken aback and she turns and walks away. Yeah.

[00:10:11] Um, so Bree and Isla are spending one of their nights together where Bree goes and stays and two men show up and they say, Hey, you are Isla. Um, Arden and your dad were attacked on the road. Um, we found them and brought them to our house. We left them with a healer and then we came to get you to let you know, cause we thought you'd want to know. And at first they're like, this seems a little suspicious, but ultimately I love is like, these guys seem really harmless.

[00:10:38] Like they're, they're not going to do anything to us. And she's like, her family makes weapons. She's been well-trained in how to use those weapons. Um, so she's like, all right. And they say Arden, the brother is mostly fine. He's got some scratches, but their dad has been stabbed in the side and like fell on his head and had a concussion. Um, and he's like not waking up. So they decide to go with these strangers. Um, she's hell bent. Like I'm not going to lose anyone else. I will not do it.

[00:11:06] Um, she keeps thinking she sees and hears the moon haired stranger along the way. Um, and she ends up having a run in with the God of air, which is the legend behind a statue in her village that she's always been like drawn to like an arrow goes like whizzing by. But like at the last second moves and then there's the God of the air and they're like, what? Um, all right.

[00:11:32] Apart from Isla, there are POVs from several elementals so far. I haven't gotten a ton from them yet. Um, but they're all being awoken from a thousand year slumber. And they each like when they're waking up, keep hearing Adoran, Adoran, Adoran, which is the name of the mountain range where Isla like lives. She lives like underneath the Adoran mountains. So, uh, yeah, I've been slowly reading that in the evenings just, you know, cause I wanted to.

[00:12:02] Um, and then I've been also reading Heirs of Infamy by Kyla Zhao, which we'll talk about later. Yay. What about you? Okay. I, last I left y'all. Um, we, I, I attended books, gowns and crowns chapter five in San Diego. Um, this is one of the most well-run. Really? Yes.

[00:12:30] It was so well-run. It was so thoughtful. It, you could tell there was intention behind everything. Um, they had for like, um, more popular authors like Hannah Nicole Mare, um, and Kate Jacobs, Melissa Rorick, Penn Cole. Like they had QR codes that you scan and you got put into a virtual queue and you'd get a text message when it was like your time. So you could continue walking. Y'all west.

[00:13:00] Y'all fest. I need you to do this. Absolutely. It was a dream. It truly was because you could scan it and then just, cause everybody's got their phone on them. Right? So like, you don't really have to think about it until, Oh, all of a sudden text message. Um, okay. Time to go get in line. And then once you get in line, they only call like 10 to 20 people at a time. So like, you're not standing in a really long line anyways.

[00:13:27] And so, and it's also like, you don't necessarily have to come back right when they text you to like, if you're finishing up something else or you're like, you know, It's like lightning line. Yeah, exactly. It's, it was really, really cool. Um, they are very, very intentional about not being just ADA accessible, but an ADA compliant, but ADA friendly.

[00:13:53] So it's very much like, okay, it's a big deal to them to make sure ADA is taken care of, which was really, I could tell a lot of people were really appreciative of it. I was really appreciative of it. Appreciative of it. Words are hard. I'm tired. It's like, um, and so that was really nice.

[00:14:13] Um, and one of my favorite things is that basically they scheduled in nap time, which was so lovely. Like you had like a, like the first day Thursday was like a four hour block where there were just panels back to back. And then there was like break. And then there were like nighttime activities.

[00:14:34] And then day two, Friday, there was like, uh, 10, 11, 12, one, two, so five hours, wait, 11, 12, one, two, four hours, a four hour block of like, uh, the, the exhibit hall is open. So you could go shop, you can get things signed, blah, blah, blah, all of that stuff. And then there was a break and then there was like nighttime activities. And so it was like, nobody was overwhelmed with like, it was, it was so well put together.

[00:15:04] And Jordan, who is love, who runs it to do this too. It was chaos. It was so well put together. And like everybody that I talked to, everybody that I heard was like, this is, it's so like, it's truly so intentional, right? Like she puts so much thought behind every single thing that is done. Um, like she, like Jordan really makes it a point. Like she is an author herself.

[00:15:30] So she is putting on a con that she would want as an author, but also like what she knows that readers want. And it's just, I cannot recommend this con enough. Um, I, I joked on like the last night that like, there's, I joked, but I'm also serious. Like there's no bond quite like a BGC bond. Like I am now in a group chat with seven people that I didn't know before this.

[00:15:59] I mean, I knew like Miranda's son, I knew her, but like we, you know, we didn't talk outside of like attending cons together. Um, so now I'm just, I'm in a group chat with like seven other people. And we're like, okay. And like when we left the ball on Saturday night to like go back to our respective rooms, like this was goodbye. We like actually like teared up. We're like, Oh my God, we have to leave. Like it was, it's just, ah, it was a good time. It was so much fun. Um, and of course I got to spend time with Terry Lee.

[00:16:28] I know. I love her so much. I love her so much. I told her like one of my, one of my big goals for the weekend was to get a traditional Terry Lee selfie. And we got that right away. So that was very cool. Somebody commented on y'all's and talked about the, the, when I got where they were like, I just want to go back to Seattle. And I'm like, Oh my God. Yeah. It was, it was a really great time.

[00:16:52] So I highly recommend attending if and when you can, um, we'll talk offline. I have thoughts. Okay. Good thoughts. Good thoughts. Yeah. Good plans. Um, but secrets. Um, but next year at 2027, it's in Denver and then 2028, they're coming back to San Diego.

[00:17:15] And it was announced at the ball on Saturday that San Diego was going to be the permanent West coast home for BGC. So that's very exciting. The hotel was lovely. Amazing. And literally it's right next to it's right down the street from where they do comic-con every year, like San Diego comic-con. So it's like, they know what they're doing. Um, but yeah, obviously the big thing is just like the cost.

[00:17:45] It's like the cost of like drinks at the parties because the hotel is expensive or like, um, for people who had to park there who weren't, you know, staying there. I mean, staying there is expensive, but like, yeah. Overall. Excellent, wonderful experience. And I would absolutely do it again. In fact, we all joked with, um, Jordan and Kayla, I think is her name is the other person who helps with it. Um, they were like, are you guys coming back for next year coming to Denver?

[00:18:13] And we're like, we're gonna try, but we're committed for 2028. Our entire group chat is like, no, 2028 San Diego. We'll do that. Yeah. Maybe, but San Diego we're in. So I'm, I really, really highly recommend it and I'm really glad that I was able to go in the universe was like, this is your time. Yeah. It's very cool. Um, in terms of books, I read never say die a memoir by Kiki Kwant.

[00:18:44] Um, I, I love this man so much. And it's just like, of course, there's like so much that we don't know. Like we didn't know about, you know, his story went from when he was short round in Indiana Jones. So like when he makes his quote unquote comeback and everything, everything, everywhere all at once, like the, the, that period of time when we didn't see a lot of him.

[00:19:08] And it's really just, it's so inspiring to kind of read his story and understand like what he went through and his mindset through it all and how he just manages to still be like this wonderful kind angel, angel, angel on earth. Like truly, uh, it's, I cried so many times reading it simply because it's like, it's so touching. Like, and I always cry at his Oscar speech. I can't even think about it without.

[00:19:38] I really can't. Um, yeah. And, and I was just at an event last night that he did, um, here in Santa Clara, um, where he announced that he hit the New York Times bestseller list for the first one. Um, so that was very cool. He was like, I landed in San Francisco and I got a call that said I, I was on the New York Times bestseller list. And I was like, of course you were no doubt in my mind, but also like really exciting.

[00:20:06] Um, and he's just the nicest human being. I just, I can't say enough good things. Highly recommend it. Have some tissues on hand, especially if you're an emotional girly like me. I cried a lot. Um, and then I read rules for aging and larceny by Julia London.

[00:20:27] So this follows, um, Francis, Joan, Edie, and Irene, who are a group of like a group of girls who elderly women who, um, in their like twenties, they like found each other and they realized that they were really good at committing crimes together. So they were like a girl gang before like, you know, a girl gangs, um, were a thing. And they had a falling out at some point and it's now like 30, 40 years later.

[00:20:56] Um, Francis has found out that she has cancer and she doesn't have much time left. And she's decided that one of the things that she wants to do before she leaves this earth is to reconnect with her friends and pull off another crime and pull off one last heist. I love it. So yeah, it's, it's exactly as you imagine. Like it's just, it's so silly. It's so silly.

[00:21:25] Good times. Yeah. Um, and then I am also, I'm about 50% of the way through heirs of infamy by Kyla Zhao. And we'll talk about that shortly. Hey, I learned this week that I am fucked. When sunrise on the reaping comes out. Oh yeah. Okay. So Noah Kahn that I'm already dead. Then they fucking hit me with Hozier. Yeah. We're not supposed to do.

[00:21:55] We're not making it out of that theater. I keep telling Josh, you're going to have to drag my remains out. Call the coroner, get Leon Jones on the phone. He's going to have to come down. Cause that I'm sorry, not making it out. So sorry. I'll miss which, which, which, you know, is really sad because that's right before we meet Tom Hiddleston. I know that might be the only thing that I was talking about it today. Actually. Right. Like upcoming leave with my boss.

[00:22:25] And I was like, yeah, I was like, I think I'll be working one day, the week of Thanksgiving, but I'm not taking all of that off for Thanksgiving. I'm taking it off for Tom. Like, I mean, Loki's a really good show. Yeah. So he was like, are we another season of that? I was like, no. Bestie. I don't think so. I don't think we're getting another season of that. I would love to, but I doubt it. We'll see.

[00:22:52] Anyways, when I text you that I'm on the way to see sunrise on the reaping, I just need you to remind me to live for Tom. Just remember. Survive for Tom. Survive for Tom. Everything after. It's fine. I told so many people this weekend that I was like, I, cause I got my knee scooter from a random stranger who was like, Hey, come to my house. I have this knee scooter you can borrow.

[00:23:18] And I told so many people, I'm like, I'm either about to get a knee scooter or I'm about to be murdered. And honestly, give my kidneys away. I'm okay with either at this point. Yeah. Either I get a new scooter and I can get around or I'm out of this world, which you know what? Yeah. I'm not mad at, honestly. This world sucks. Live for Tom. Live for Tom. Live for Tom. All right. That was going to be a new t-shirt.

[00:23:49] Go here, Fangirl. Live for Tom. Let's do it. Let's do it. Maybe I'll break out the iPad on the drive to Disney tomorrow. Hell yeah. Hell yeah. Okay. Now I ask you, do you have a fictional boyfriend this week? Okay. My timeline is all messed up. I know it's all a mess.

[00:24:14] So obviously not a boyfriend, obviously not fictional, but am I legally allowed to say anyone other than Ki Hui Khan this week? No. Like I don't think I can. No, I don't think so. I don't really think this needs explaining at all. Yeah. Like, I think I've already gushed enough. Like this man is a perfect angel on earth. Yeah. For sure. And just, I love him so much.

[00:24:43] I know. I love him so much. I just, and I got to talk to him in Cantonese, which was very exciting. It was like two words, but it was really exciting. But still, I was like, all I said was thank you. But it was like, it was something. It was a little something. So yeah. So yeah. Such an angel. He's a perfect human being, quite frankly. I cried. Literally cried when he walked out.

[00:25:11] And I was like, I'm going to cry when I walk up to him. I got to hold it together. Yeah. I love that man. I legally, I'm not allowed to say anybody else. So there we are. Wasn't he my only complaint with the Crazy Rich Asians? Which, like where the fuck? Hilariously, hilariously. He, he, he was talking about doing American born Chinese. And he was like, listen, I was not about to pass up another all Asian cast. Okay.

[00:25:40] I had FOMO from Crazy Rich Asians. So I was not going to say no to American born Chinese. Which I don't think I've scared you as much as I did in that moment where I was like, I have a criticism. The scariest moment of my life. I was, I was sitting in the car next to Beth. And I was like, Mandy just said she had a criticism of Crazy Rich Asians. And she was like, what? And then we waited and we waited. And I'm like, I turned around like, it's okay.

[00:26:09] We're, we're okay. We can still be friends. It's a good one. She's like, it's valid. That is so valid. Very valid. I wanted him to show up at the end. Oh my God. Yeah. Yeah. You know, I don't know if, I don't remember if you've read the series, but she, she does, I guess, spoiler alert, but the book's old. Um, but she does meet her dad eventually.

[00:26:37] So, hello. I wouldn't be mad at it. There's options. Anyways. Yeah. Yeah. Anyways. Ki Kui Kwan. I like it. What about you? Well, I have two, but the first one's also not fictional, but could I say anything else? But Tallulah, my girl, my fictional real life angel dog forever. Yeah. My sweet baby. Um, it was funny. Um, it was funny.

[00:27:06] Cause like we keep having, like, I have like my memories of her, like, Oh, the time we took her and Georgie when we just had the two of them to Charleston one year and she sniffed out a piece of food in Georgie's crate and she tried to eat it. But then she really didn't realize she had to back up out of the crate. So she thought she was trapped and she just started shaking and the crates in the air and her little butt. And it was like the funniest thing.

[00:27:32] And so the twins came over before, you know, I took her to the vet and they spent the night after. And so they were talking about their memories. And one of their friends calls us and you know, she's like, I'm so sorry. You know, this is awful. I have a gift for the girls. And she's like, I I'll never forget the time she ate a whole tub of Vaseline. I completely forgot about it, which is crazy. Cause that whole tub of Vaseline was all over my house for the next three days.

[00:28:01] And I was the one cleaning it up. But it was just funny to think about like, or to, to see what things people remember about her. Like what funny stories are like, that's the one I call out. Oh, I love. And then I'm, I'm listening. Like I said, I'm listening to a court of silver flames. And again, this secondary, the second read through of ACOTAR. I love resand. I named my car after resand. Okay.

[00:28:31] I haven't eyes for no one, but Lucian. He's been on the page three and a half times in this. I'm like 70% in, but every time Lucians there, I'm like, I'm getting news that we're getting Lucian's POV. Please. The yearning. The yearning. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:29:01] I fear, I fear I'm broken. I've already. Well, I don't think we'll record. I don't think we're recording after. We might be. It comes out the 27th. I don't think so. Oh, well I'll have to be on Instagram, but I've already warned Josh. Like I'm not going to be around for like a day or two. And I told my boss the same thing as his wife's a reader. I told him today. I'm like, you know, you lose your wife in like a month. Yeah. And he was like, what? Yeah. So there's a new Court of Thorns and Roses book.

[00:29:31] He was like, she's been reading a lot more lately. She's probably rereading. I was like, but October 27th, that's not your girl anymore. That's Azrael's girl. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I fear you are no longer married. I'm sorry. You've lost her, man. She'll come back around, but it's going to be a minute. Yeah. There's Illyrians. Like, sorry. No offense. And Lucian. And Lucian. Lucian's not Illyrian, but that's okay. He can be whatever he wants. Illyrians and Lucian.

[00:30:01] Sweet. He can be whatever he wants with his little fake eye. Oh, baby. Yeah. Good choice. And I'm dreading that I have to start Crescent City very, very, very soon. And I don't want to. I don't want to. I don't want to. Oh, man. But we know who my boyfriend, actually, we already know who my professional boyfriend of the week next week is going to be anyways, because Tuesday, a new Shatter Me comes out. Yeah.

[00:30:30] It's a given that Rundanen is going to be my boyfriend next week, but no. Silly girl. Silly girl. You're so silly. Oh, I love it. Okay. Okay. It is time for an announcement. I am so excited. We're going to talk to Audrey Kohlberg next week about Vengefully Matched. Woohoo. I cannot express how much I loved her first book.

[00:30:56] I made my book club read it in January, and I have been waiting for this for so long. I'm so excited that I, I mean, like I could have dug into it sooner, but you know my memory It's October, so it's perfect. It gives Wednesday, Adams. I mean, look. It, yes. It gives the show Wednesday. Yes. Even standing in front of a window. I'm so excited.

[00:31:26] If you're not Patreon, you can't look. Sorry. Loser. I am so excited. I'm so excited. So, yay! That's next week. Yay! Okay. Now it's time for a spiel. A spiel. Yay! Okay. Yep. Magic. Yesterday I saw my niece for dinner and she was like, Mimi, insert girl's name at school, thought that 100 plus 100 was a thousand. And I was like, girl, what's one plus one? Two. So 100 plus 100 is 200. And I was like.

[00:35:14] I was at a lunch with Kate Jacobs, who wrote The Princess Knight. And they I was making a joke about how my dad I wasn't making a joke. I was talking about how my dad can do math in his head and he can do things like square roots. And they were like, well, you just do this and do some decimal work. And we're like, what are you talking about, Kate? No, I've never heard of anybody doing decimal work in my life. And they were like decimal work.

[00:35:44] Those were their exact words. You just do some decimal. Decimate my brain. And I'm like, Kate, what? I love you so much. Stop talking. I hate those people who are like, I know how to leave a tip. You just move the decimal and then you divide by that. Or pull out your phone. In where I live, my tax rate is 10%. So I literally just double it. Makes it easy for me. Ours is like ours is seven. Yeah.

[00:36:13] They're like double it and add a little bit. No. Yeah. Ours is ours is literally 10%. So we just double. I'm scared. But anyways. Yeah. Yeah. Anyways. Everything for free. No. One of every one thing. One of every buying 10. Yeah, I've gotten confused. Just do it. Go tell us. Yeah, exactly. How about that? How about you do some math for a change? Yeah. Why do we do it every week? Yeah.

[00:39:31] Um, but yeah, there was, there was, um, somebody who was talking about how much they love a pathetic yearning man. And I was like, can I tell you about a pathetic yearning man, please?
