[00:00:03] Welcome to the Incoherent Fangirl, where it's time for the Candy Awards! I can't believe it! Oh my gosh, this year has flown by. I don't like it. I don't like it at all. Nope. But here we are. Here we are. I'm Mandy. I'm Karin. Oh, wow. End of season five. What a year. What the hell? How did we get here? What a year? I don't know.

[00:00:30] How did we get here? My God. All right. Let's get going. Let's do this. Okay. Well, first of all, in our timeline, it's October 22nd. When y'all are hearing this, it's October 30th. So happy Halloween. Ooh, spooky Halloween! I'm gonna be my baby niece tomorrow. Oh, that's exciting. I got a Huntrick sweater. I got a dumpling mystery squishy. I've got a fidget purse. I'm gonna put my hair up.

[00:01:02] I'm gonna put her up in like a LeBooBoo scrunchie. I'm obsessed. Like, I'm not going mean. No. I'm just going like you're an icon. You're a legend. You are the moment. I love her. Ladies and gentlemen, her. It's gonna be so good. It's gonna take her a second, but once she gets it, I think she's gonna be thrilled. I think so too. It's gonna be so good. Yay! And I have told no one. So my whole family doesn't know. The show husband knows. Josh knows. That's it. And anybody who's listened to the podcast. True.

[00:01:31] True. So none of your family. Nobody narc me out. You know my family. None of my family knows how to listen to a podcast. Let's be real. They don't know that there's a podcast app on their phone. Fair, fair, fair. All right. I think we just get right into it.

[00:01:50] We start from the beginning and move on or keep going. Let me make sure mine are in the same order as yours because I think one year I accidentally did not have them in the same order and you got very confused.

[00:02:03] Okay. So I'm just gonna double check right now as we're sitting here. Yes. Yes, it is. Okay. We're doing great. I'm so proud of me. Us. You did it. Yay! All right. All right. So do I guess do you want to start? Okay. Okay. Karen, tell me about your cliffhanger of the year. Okay. This one.

[00:02:34] Okay. I have so many thoughts on this and I am like dying because like all of them. I don't have the sea. I have one of the sequels and I just have to sit down and read it, but it's also like the first in a trilogy. So it's still going to be awful. Okay. So my nominees are Cold Wire by Chloe Gong. The Once and Future Queen by Paula Lafferty and Dragon Curse by Elise Kova.

[00:03:03] Ugh! I... Cliffhangers are so fun when I have the next book. Otherwise, I want to die. All right. Anyways, drum roll or whatever we do, my winner is... Cold Wire by Casp. Oh, no. Shock! Ah! Oh, what? We're so surprised we're starting out. Who are you? You're going to be really shocked by mine too. Ah, yes. I'm sure.

[00:03:33] All right. Tell me about your nominees and your winner. All right. My nominees are... Adversary to the Villain. We'll get that a little nod. A little nod. Yeah. By Hannah Nicole Mayer. Release Me by Tahita Mafi. And Dragon Curse by Elise Kova. And I have to give it... The award goes to Release Me by Tahita Mafi because where was Aaron? Must he live? I was not okay. And thankfully...

[00:04:04] You know, like we've moved on. We're good. We're... We've got another book. But holy gods. I was not like... Did he die in that Costco right now? I'll never step in on a Costco again if you've killed off Aaron Warner there. I don't think she would ever. Knock on wood. Please, Tahita. Please. I feel like he's too beloved. That's true. She could probably kill off anybody else. But Aaron? That feels like a declaration of war.

[00:04:35] Yeah. Yeah. Fair enough. Fair enough. Okay. Next up, we have Sequel of the Year. Tell me, Mandy. Tell me. All right. I have Adversary to the Villain Again by Hannah Nicole Mayer. Burn of the Everflame by Penn Cole. And Dawnbringer by Stephanie Fisher. And the award goes to Dawnbringer by Stephanie Fisher. I freaking ride real hard for the Temporous series. If you haven't read it, what are you doing? It is so good.

[00:05:04] Stephanie Fisher is an indie author who has like a – I don't understand how she's not traditionally published. She has Elizabeth Evans doing her audiobooks. She has like a massive Patreon where she releases chapters of her books like as she completes them or as she's ready for the world to see them. And then you get the final book. Chef's Kiss No Notes. I love this series.

[00:05:29] And so getting a new Temporous book this year was great. That was a hard one to pick, though. Yeah. Fair. Fair. Tell me about your sequel of the year. Okay. My nominees are A Forsaken Prophecy by Stacey McEwen, Cursed City by Kate Golden, and Dawn of Chaos and Fury by Melissa K. Rolrick, which is a book four. But that's still a sequel.

[00:06:00] We decided last year. Dawnbringer, I think, is four. Yeah. I think we had a question last year. Like if it's not the second book, is it still a sequel? But it is a sequel to the sequel. It continues the story. It's still a sequel. So, but I wanted to make it clear that was book four, which is why my winner is Dawn of Chaos and Fury by Melissa K. Rolrick. She wrapped it up so well. I like,

[00:06:28] I know that the Legacy series is part of like a wider, like all of, I think all of her books are kind of set in the same world. We just follow different people. And so like I could continue, but also I'm like, this was so good. Like I don't want to visit other people. I like these people. Which I'm like, I feel like it's such a testament to somebody's writing, right? Like I love your character so much. I don't want to revisit your world with anyone else but them. Yeah.

[00:06:58] So I just thought she did it so well. And I had, and I feel like from book one to book four, like each book got better and better. And it was just chef's kiss. I really enjoyed it. So that's my winner. Speaking about things we enjoy. Tell me about your ship of the year. Okay. To absolutely nobody's surprise.

[00:07:28] Okay. First I have to, I have to, I have to set this up because I did do a full reread of the Chloe Gong cinematic universe. So that's important to note because my first nominee is Juliette and Roma from the secret Shanghai series by Chloe Gong, Elizabeth and Lincoln from next level.

[00:07:57] Love by Shamuse Patel and Isola and Lucan from dragon curse by Elise Kova. And again, and again, to nobody's surprise, my ship of the year is Juliette and Roma. I will never get over these babies, seeing them again as children and then watching them grow up again. It was just so lovely. I just, I mean, I can't, I can't say anything more.

[00:08:27] I just love them so much. It's your turn. Okay. Well, we know I've done my Sarah J Maas cinematic universe reread. I finished Crescent city. God love me. And by the time you're hearing this, ACOTAR six is out. Okay. F you Gwen and Asriel. I don't get L real out of my face,

[00:08:56] get L real out of my face. I hate it. I could not hate it anymore. And I hope I, I hope this comes across as gloating because I hope I'm right. Okay. I hope I'm right. Okay. Gwen and Asriel from ACOTAR, Tali and sky from Tempris because, and Azola and Lucan from dragon curse. I give it to Tali and sky though. It is always been her. It has always been her.

[00:09:25] She has always been oblivious to the fact that it's always been her. And every time she puts herself in like the most precarious situation, she possibly can. There he is. Absolutely panicked. I might die. I might die. How do I get to her? What, like what is happening to her? I will tear the whole world apart for her. 80 and ash river in a different font. And again, F you. If you think that's a negative, it is absolutely a positive.

[00:09:56] Get out of my face. So Tali and sky from the temper series, go read this series. I'm serious. It is so good. I love it. Love, love, love. Our Alejandro from curses, keys and secret societies by Brian Randall, the goose in wild goose chase by Sarah.

[00:10:26] And then blade from adversary to the villain. My uncle mayor. I love blade. He's so funny. He doesn't mean to be blessed as little heart, but I am going to give the award to Alejandro from curses, keys and secret societies. I love him. He is like, yeah, on this, we're good. We're going to be okay. That is a king. I mean, but I mean,

[00:10:56] the goose is a close second because this is so good. That is so good. It's not a side character. That is so good. The goose is. I love, I love that. That's great. Tell me about your side character of the year. Okay. I picked Marshall saw from the secret Shanghai universe by Chloe Gong. Claire from next level love by Shamus Patel.

[00:11:24] And Kenji Kishimoto from release me by Tana Maffi. Oh my boy. I love it. I tried to be fair. Okay. I, I did too, but later. Every single category would have a shatter me if I could, but I tried really hard. I, I, I also tried. Okay. I didn't do great, but I tried. Um, but my side character of the year is Kenji Kishimoto. I mean, if it wasn't, I would log out right now. I mean, you would be hearing from my fearsome dog. How could I? Kenji.

[00:11:54] It's Kenji. It's Kenji. I love Kenji. I love Kenji so much. So yeah, that's, that's my choice. All right. Who's your best main character of the year? Okay. So my nominees are, I thought I was much, much better at spreading this out. Apparently I wasn't, but you know what? I don't care. Anyways,

[00:12:23] Juliet Tsai from the secret Shanghai universe by Chloe Gong, Tessalyn Ostra from the legacy series by Melissa K. Rorick and animal gauge from queen of faces by Petra Lord. The winner is Annabelle gauge from Petra, from queen of faces by Petra Lord. I think that she has such a, such a journey. And she, she really like from the beginning of the book to the end,

[00:12:53] she changes so much and she goes through so much. And yet here she stands. And I'm so excited for a book too. I can't wait to hang out with Annabelle again. What about you? Um, okay. I have Evie Sage. Love her. Love her. Love her from the assistant to the villain series. Aylan Galathinius.

[00:13:21] And DM Bellator from kindred, the kindred's curse saga. She had so much growth. I love her. People say she's annoying and I don't get that. I don't get an annoying. Like if she made every perfect choice that you would, then there's not a story worth reading. Yeah. No, she has to have, she has to give you conflict. Yeah. But I fear just as if it would not be me, if I didn't say Aaron Warner, I will always give the award to Aylan Ashriver, Whitethorn Galathinius, my girl forever.

[00:13:50] She can do no wrong. She will do no wrong. It's always going to be Aylan for me. So go read Throne of Glass, everybody. Even if you've already read it, it's time for a reread. All right. Next up is villain slash antagonist of the year. Okay. I think I'm actually going to change my award while I'm looking at this. Oh, okay. Okay. So I have a Thea Kai from the Kindred's curse saga.

[00:14:18] Like I was literally thinking about this as I was falling asleep last night. King cross from rights of the starling by Devney Perry or the villain from the everlasting by Alex E. Harrow. But I don't want to say because it gets in like specifically because it gets into spoiler territory. Yeah. I think I'm going to give this one to King cross because there's such a twist when you learn more about this king and his motivations.

[00:14:45] And I think it was so well written and such a, huh? Moment that I'm going to get, yeah, I'm going to give it to King cross. Okay. I like that choice. Yeah. Okay. Tell me about your fictional boyfriend of the year and why it's Roma. That's not where we're at. Thank you very much. I have told you nothing about my villains. Oh,

[00:15:14] who's your villain? How dare you? Whoops. There I perceive you. How dare you? Because I have good choices. Okay. All right. We'll get there. Hit me with your villain.

[00:15:58] Okay. The legacy series by Melissa K. Rorick. And if you've read the series, you know what I mean? And it's, it's very much this idea of like, everybody's a villain to somebody. Right. But like, depending on how you look at the story, she could be. They call Killmonger a villain. And I'm like, she, listen, she is the, she is the main character, but also girl does some shit. And I love her for it. Um,

[00:16:27] so she is my third nominee for villain slash antagonist of the year, even though she was also a nominee for main character of the year. Okay. Yeah. She contains multitudes. Yeah, she does. But after all of that, I have to give it to Lex from hopelessly. He voted. He is the most chaotic fucking like pathetic little devil man. And I, he's so chaotic.

[00:16:56] He's so chaotic. Like, what do you mean you curse somebody because you were jealous that they were flirting with each other instead of you? Like that is the most chaotic thing ever. He was. And, and, and it's like, yes, they were also flirting with you, but also like, they're clearly meant to be together. Yeah. He's just, he's such chaos and he's so funny and he doesn't mean to be. Uh, and he's, I just love him. He's great. I love him so much. Good one. So, yeah,

[00:17:26] that was, that was my, we'll say antagonist. Yeah. For the year. Right now. Tell me about Roma. I'm just kidding. Listen. He's perfect. Okay. My nominees are Lincoln Carden from next level love by Shamuse Patel. Axel St. Orcas specifically from dawn of chaos and fury by Melissa K. Rorick. I've talked about this before,

[00:17:57] specifically from this book. The whole series is great, but this book. And yes. Okay. It's Roman Montagov from these violent lights slash secret Shanghai series. Because it's, because it's, I named my dog after him. Okay. Like, let's be so real. If it wasn't Roma. Body snatch. Obviously, Roma. I should have given you parameters like you did me. Obviously, Roma is the winner.

[00:18:25] I named my dog after him. I named my dog after him. These are the rules. Okay. Okay. Tell me about Aaron Warner. Five foot nine. Damn straight. Fine. Okay. I, uh, my nominees. Bless their two little hearts. Are Sky Emerus from the temper series. Owen Mallory from the everlasting. That's a good man. Okay. That is a good man. Oh,

[00:18:55] and Aaron Warner. So, I mean, obviously it's Aaron Warner. I tattooed my literal body for the man. Okay. Like how more, how much more devoted can you get? My husband tattooed his body for me. I tattooed mine for Aaron Warner. He has a wedding ring tattoo. I have an ignite tattoo. I feel like those aren't exactly the same. They're not. Not reciprocal. To be fair,

[00:19:24] he used to work in a place where he could have his finger degloved if he was wearing a ring. And he was like, but I still want to have a ring. And so he wanted his first tattoo to be his wedding ring. But, I'm just saying there's devotion there. There is devotion. I, I see it. I see it. All right. Next step is arc of the year. Okay. This one was hard. Cause we get a lot of good arcs, but I'm going to go with the one. So hard.

[00:19:53] I'm going to go with the one I was the most excited about. Okay. So, nominees are still into you by Aaron Connor. Burn of the Everflame by Penn Cole and the Santa Claus con by Lauren Cung Justin. I'm going to go, I got to go with burn of the Everflame. I mean, I could not believe my life when that thing arrived. Like, I could not believe my life when the PDF arrived or the e-galley. And then when the physical copyright, like, are you joking?

[00:20:23] Yeah. Are you joking right now? Be so for real. Tell me about your arc of the year. Okay. This one was hard because I have ones that I'm more excited about, but I haven't read yet. Yeah. So, they are automatically disqualified. Yeah. But next year, I don't know. Everybody else better look out because next year, I might already have my nominees. Me too. Like, right now. We haven't even booked it yet, but I'm like.

[00:20:53] Right now, I might already have my nominees for next year. Yeah. So, y'all better step it up. Okay. But my nominees for this year, I picked ones that I was truly like, they're one, super popular among the community. Two, that I was really excited to read. And three, that I thought were so fantastic. Um, so my nominees are Lost and Found by Tara DeWitt.

[00:21:22] Um, In Every Future It's Us by Katie Naiman. And Always One More Time by Nicola Yoon. These books, I cannot say enough good things about them. Um, but, and like the fact that I got to read them early is just. I know. It's freaking mind blowing. And like, not even just early, but like really early. Like, Nicola's book isn't even out until February. Um,

[00:21:51] I got Tara's at the beginning of the year. And then Katie's we got, we got ages ago as well. So I'm like, it wasn't even just like, oh, I got these and it's like next month they come. Like I got to read them early. And I'm so, I'm, that's so cool. Um, so my winner is Always One More Time by Nicola Yoon. I, God, God, the story is so good.

[00:22:17] But then to pair it with like such a fantastic opportunity blows everything else out of the water, quite frankly. It was, it was fantastic. So that is my arc of the year. Love it. Do you want to tell me about your debut of the year? Okay. I tried to be really fair. I tried. I tried. But I will say,

[00:22:46] I did do rereads this year. Yeah. So I did my best guys. I am simply but a girl. Okay. My nominees are These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong. Queen of Faces by Petra Lord. And a surprise nominee. Never Say Die by Ki Kui Kwan. Ooh, fudge. That sucks.

[00:23:16] So good. I know. But I have to go with the one that made me cry the most. Yeah. Because who am I if I'm not a big fat baby? The winner is Never Say Die by Ki Kui Kwan. And this man. That makes me want to cry. Is everything to me. I like, I'm going to cry. No, but like, I'm so proud of him. Yeah. Like,

[00:23:45] he doesn't know me from Eve, but like, I'm so proud of him. Like, and just fantastic. Amazing. And it's so good. And like, to hear him read his words in his own voice. Everything to me. How many times does he cry? Like, he keeps it together. Did he do an audio book? Like, how many times does he cry in the audio book? He, he, I think there were maybe like one or two times where he gets choked up.

[00:24:13] And there were at least like 10 times where I'm full on bawling. You're like, I'm going to throw up and die. I was not well in the best way. And so, yeah, but that is, that's, that's my debut of the year. I like this. This is, this is me manifesting that he like, starts writing fiction or like literally anything else, because I mean, I'll take it. I would love it. I would love it. So I'm manifesting.

[00:24:43] Tell it to the universe. Yep. Putting it out there. Just hear it. Hear it to universe. This is what we need. Tell me about yours. My love. Um, my nominees are the quarter queen by Kayla Hardy, kissed by the gods by Katie Rogan or tempest by Victoria. Aveyard. Cause that was a adult. That was an adult. Um, I'm going to give the award to the quarter queen by Kayla Hardy. So I freaking love her. She's a freaking queen herself.

[00:25:12] Truly. Truly. I'm already counting down the moments for when she's coming back on the podcast. I cannot adore her. I'm so excited. Yeah, no, that's such a good choice. Yeah, that's, that's a good one. That's a really good one. All right. The moment we've all been waiting for book of the year. All right. I was really fair with this one because I did not choose any shatter me books.

[00:25:43] Okay. Um, my nominees are Dawn Bringer by Stephanie Fisher, Burn of the Everflame by Pen Cole or the Everlasting by Alex E. Harrow. And the award goes to the Everlasting. It is so, it's a standalone. It is so incredibly good. It,

[00:26:05] the characters like the growth and the like become what you need in the moment you need it, even though it's opposite of who I am, but it's not changing myself. Like, I don't know how to explain it, but it is perfect. It is a perfect book. So if you have not read the Everlasting by Alex E. Harrow, a thousand out of 10, go read that book. I love it. Like it's quick.

[00:26:35] You could do it in a day. The audio book is wonderful. Oh, anyways, it needs all the flowers in the world and it's so under hyped. But all right. Tell me about your book of the year. All right. My nominees are The Santa Claus Con by Lauren Kung Jessen, The Library After Dark by Andy Pliego. Good one. And Cold Wire by Chloe Gong.

[00:27:04] And the winner is Cold Wire by Chloe Gong. I'm sorry. The twist in this book set me off a cliff. I listen, I have clearly, I have read Chloe Gong from the beginning and I know how she writes and I know her stories. And I was struck. I was stricken. I was verklempt. I was, what is happening? I don't understand. How did this happen? What is happening?

[00:27:32] How did you come up with this? And what, what, what, what? I have no words. I have no words because how did this happen? And I not see that coming. I don't know. I don't know. She's just that good. Jaw on the ground. And yeah, so it was, it, yeah. I'm, I can't say anything else. I'm just in awe. He's not going to say anything either.

[00:28:04] He's so cute. Rotten. I've got a lot of helpers for this recording session. Well, that's right. All right. That was the candy award to everybody. Yay. Now we're going to go into hibernation. Oh my goodness. Do we do a spiel? I think we do a spiel. We probably do. I can't imagine we would get off without a spiel. Yeah. All right. Well, friends, this is the end of the season.

[00:28:34] Perhaps. I had a mustache. Like, uh, what's the Steve? What is it? That Tom Hiddleston does? I would be twirling it. Yes. But for now, we're going to say goodbye with a little spiel. It's a story about a girl who was born a ghost, but ages like the living and the reaper who would die to get her to look at him because he is a pathetic mess about her. So I love a yearny man. Um, right now, Trinity scent design has a living in the dead home fragrance collection. There's soap, there's body spray, there's wickless candles,

[00:34:50] there's room freshening spray in fragrances inspired by the living in the dead. So go to Trinity scent design and buy 10 of everything. And even if it's not the living in the dead stuff, Shannon is great. But the fact that there's a living in the dead fragrance line is the craziest thing in the world to me. Like I cannot put into words what it felt like to open that box. Um, and if you would like a copy of the living in the dead, I'm on all the major retailers websites,

[00:35:19] or if you'd like a signed copy, you can go to my website, aepervis.com. Use code Aaron Warner to get 10% off because it would not be me if I didn't make something about Aaron Warner.
