[00:00:00] I'm like ready. I'm so proud of you. Meanwhile, I'm like frazzled. It was a day. Welcome to The Incoherent Fangirl. Where this week we're bringing back a podcast bestie and it's gonna be chaos. Bestie Westie. Yes. It's gonna be chaos. In the best way. The best way. I should have done some facial like stretches because I know we're gonna be laughing. Oh yes. Oh yes. I know it. I just know it. I'm Mandy of Enchantra. Oh, well, I'm Karin from Hell. Living in Hell.
[00:00:34] Aren't we all? Here in America you are. Basically, yeah. In our timeline it is April 3rd and in y'all's timeline it is April 11th. Look at that. We're chugging right along. How is it April? I don't know. That's weird. February and March went by really bad. I'm very confused how time works. I don't get it. You don't understand it. No. No. Nothing. It'll never make sense to me. Me neither. So it's fine. It's not meant to make sense to us. Perfect.
[00:01:05] Glad we're on the same page. Yes. Always. This week in fangirling. Mandy, tell us what you did. So it is spring break here. So the girls are home from school. So I didn't do a ton, but I'll get to why.
[00:01:28] Okay. We went this weekend, we went to the Cherry Blossom Festival, which I think I've talked about before. It's we have like the second largest assortment of cherry blossom trees like in the world.
[00:02:10] Mm-hmm. The twins and I got crepes and hibiscus lemonade, which it's so pretty. It's like the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. And we got to like see all of these cool handmade goodies. It was perfect weather, perfect day.
[00:02:25] One day last week when the girls were leaving for school, a little dog showed up on the front porch. He just like ran up to them. And so like I work from home. So I was like, all right, well, I'll just like check on him. Like, cause we didn't know whose dog he was.
[00:02:41] Like, right. If he came from someone's yard, he stayed on our porch all day. And like, I would go out there and be like, Oh, you're still here. So evening we were like, all right, well, we'll feed him, I guess. Cause like, we don't know if he didn't look like, yeah, you know, you can tell like a stray dog. Like he didn't look hungry. He, he like, he seems well fed, well mannered, all of it. No collar. My husband took him the next day to check for a microchip. He did not have one. He's been here ever since.
[00:03:09] Um, we finally got him a bath and like a flea and tick treatment and, um, brought like, we're slowly introducing him to our dogs. Like today they were together all day, but the vet that we took him to for the microchip recommended like a quarantine period of like a week, which would be today. Um, just to make sure like we were not to be gross, but we were like watching his poop to make sure nothing looked out of sorts because we have four seniors. Like we got to make sure they're okay.
[00:03:36] Right. Exactly. We have named him pirate Poochie Rover. So like pirate Rover is his name, but Poochie is like what we'll call him. Right. Um, pirates, pirate Rover is the government name because he looks like Poochie from pirates of the Caribbean and Rover from the carousel of progress. So like he's a Disney dog through and through. We put, um, the, like a carousel of progress ride through on last night. So he could see, he could watch like his namesake and we're going to play the
[00:04:06] pirates of the Caribbean movies for him soon too. Oh, but he's very sweet. We got him a crate today and we're just gonna like, we're, we're looking to find him a home, but if he doesn't find one, he's got one. Like, yeah, what are we going to do? I'm not going to take this dog to a shelter like, or a pound. So he's lucky he's sweet. And he gets along with everybody. Cause I did tell him I would football kick him out of this house if he hurt George Bailey. So.
[00:04:28] Well, you would football kick me out of your house. Yeah. I mean, I was going to say empty threat cause I'm not going to like harm a dog, but at the same time, like it's George Bailey. Like I will crack somebody in half over George Bailey. Right. Like literally I got Patreon can see my epic new shirt that has just an assortment of George Bailey pictures. Perfection. Yes. I love it. I'm obsessed. Threadheads, everybody not sponsored.
[00:04:57] Hey, if you want to, if you want to, um, uh, so that we, we have a new dog that has been, uh, one of the twins has been very instrumental in raising this dog. Um, she has been like sequestered in her room with him. Um, so I'm, I think she's glad to be out of it now and able to be because she's like, you know, there's like a living room kid in the bedroom kid. She's a living room kid who's had to be a bedroom kid for half the week.
[00:05:25] Um, because I read the sunrise on the reaping last week. I have started rereading the hunger games. Um, I've just been listening while I'm like cooking or driving, which hasn't been long enough to finish the first one yet. Um, I'm, I don't want to go over it too much because like, if you've been living under a rock, you've missed the hunger games.
[00:05:46] Um, it's based on the gladiatorial games from Roman history and mythology and America like now, um, America's dystopian future where the company is, is broken up into 12 districts. And every July 4th is reaping day, um, where each district sends two kids, a boy and a girl to compete in the hunger games where they will battle to the death until one remains to be crowned to the victor and get all the money and fame.
[00:06:13] So we have Katniss Everdeen is our main character. She and Peta Malark are chosen for district 12, the poorest district. And if you don't know the rest, why are you here? Like, unless you are like 12, then like, welcome, go pick up the hunger games and read it right now. Also, if you're 12, you probably shouldn't be listening to us.
[00:06:34] That's true. That's true. Do as we say, not as we do. Um, and yeah, don't listen when we talk about spicy books. Um, but go listen, go read or listen to the hunger games. Um, and my one thing that I will always have to bring up when we talk about the hunger games is Peta Malark is the goat. Like I'm an Aaron Warner girly, but Peta Malark is the goat too. Like, yeah, yeah. Peta.
[00:07:04] He gets overlooked in a lot of things now because he's like, he's in the past a little bit, but no, no, no, no, no. And like, I watched the movies that happened right after the election. It was real ragey. And I was like, I'm going to watch the hunger games about this. I don't know what I thought it was going to do other than stoke the flame. I think that's what we need though.
[00:07:26] Yeah. Like I did that. And then one of the twins watched the first one. And because of a specific death in it, she's like, I'll never watch the other, the rest of them. The other twin was like, I really want to watch them. So we've started watching them. So I've got movie Peta and book Peta freshly in my brain. And like, they're both wonderful. Like both Petas. Like, yeah. Like book Gail sucks and so does movie Gail, but like in different ways, like book Gail is worse to me. Yeah.
[00:07:55] But book Peta and movie Peta. Well, when Sunrise came out, there was a lot on threads and somebody, somebody was like, Gail had all of this shit happen to him and he wants to inflict it on other people. Whereas Peta's had it inflicted on him and he wants nobody else to go through it. And that's the difference between them. And I'm like, yeah, exactly.
[00:08:18] It will just always like cut me to my core that, and this is a spoiler, but again, if you've not read or watched the Hunger Games trilogy, at least are in like four for the movies. Pause and don't come back until you've done this. But when he had his token made with a photo of her mom and her sister and Gail, because he was willing to die and he was going to use Gail to convince her to go back.
[00:08:44] Like, go live a life with him. Go be with him and be happy. And I will die here for you. I'm sorry. I'm going to cry just thinking about it. Do we just gloss over that? Like, do we just gloss over that? Just my cry thinking about it. How is that not your Roman Empire that you think about every single day? Sweet Peeta. Go be with Gail. I hate Gail. I love you enough to send you.
[00:09:09] To sacrifice and let you be, like, know that you're, die knowing you're going to go be with another dude. I can't. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I can't do it. I cannot. The boy with the bread. I'm sure I've said it on the podcast before because I think about it every time I think about Peeta Millard. But one of my first pins on Pinterest was a t-shirt that said Team Peeta. And it was, like, sport gray and black. It was very, black writing. It was very basic. But I was like, I've got to have that. One of the first things I ever saw on Pinterest.
[00:09:39] Sweet Peeta. Yeah. Anyways, a lot of time has been spent. So one of our podcast besties, Finley Ray, is going to pretty much be the editor on my book. He's wanting to break into the, like, editing world. And so he was like, can I use you as a guinea pig? And I was like, only if you let me pay you. Like, I'm not just going to, like, let you do all of that. Like, developmental editing is huge.
[00:10:08] Oh, it's a, yeah. It's huge. So I was like, you have to let me, like, pay you for your services. And then you can actually say when you, like, start working that you have, like, a customer who can give you a review. So he gave me some very excellent feedback for how to fix some issues that I have with the living and the dead. So we're back drafting. I've been drafting a lot. And I'm really excited. I'm really excited for where it's going. It's not changing the second, the last two thirds very much.
[00:10:38] But the first third is changing a lot in, like, the best way. Yeah. And, yeah. And I think that was one of my notes. I'm like, that beginning part. I'm like, I don't know how to fix this. But there's something. He knew. It was amazing. He was like, he gave me an outline of, like, this would be a cool thing. And when you said it and when you told me, I was like, that's it. That's the thing. That's it. It's perfect. It was like, I knew that there was something there. Yeah.
[00:11:07] Which is why I'm not an editor. Right. I was just alpha reading. And I don't want to downplay what you did. Because what, like, you going through my Google Doc and, like, leaving all of your notes and critiques and everything was perfect, too. But it was, but it was like, it was, my notes were all like, there's something here. I don't know how to fix it. But look at this. And his were like, this is how you do it. Yes. Yes. So very, very excited. Yes. So, yeah.
[00:11:36] I've been drafting. Hopefully we'll get to that soon. I did. I did. This is so weird. Okay. And he said, like, he started with cancer, which I'm a, I'm a cusp. I'm a Gemini and a cancer. I could be either one. Like, half the time they say I'm a Gemini, half the time they say I'm a cancer. You take what resonates.
[00:12:06] And this one said, like, April is going to end a, like, six-month period of stress you've been under, which I'm like, I mean, he hasn't been the president for six months, but, like, he's been around. I mean, the election was in November. So. Right. November, December, January, February, March. Almost. Yeah. Six months. But then they said, I see, like, some, at first they were talking about, like, financially I think things are about to improve.
[00:12:31] And then they were like, they literally specifically said the words, something major, like, with publishing. Like, maybe you're writing a book. And I was, I got chills all over my body. I was like, what is going on? So maybe this month I'll have some big, great revelation that I get and I can share. That's very exciting. I'm going to take what resonates there and I'm going to manifest that whatever that person was talking about is going to happen for me.
[00:12:59] And then last, I've, I'm all about halfway through Enchantra by Kaylee Smith. More on that later because I'm so excited. What did you do this week? I had also a pretty, like, quiet week, which is wild, but we'll go with it. So for me, Monday was a holiday because I work for the county and Cesar Chavez Day is a holiday for us. And on Sunday, I was thinking about how upset I was that I was going to have to work an actual
[00:13:28] 40 hour week because I haven't for the past month because of one thing or another. And then I, all of a sudden I was like, Monday's a holiday. Oh, wait. It's not a 40 hour week. My streak continues. It was a very joyous time. That has nothing to do with what I did this week. I was just thinking about that. And it was. This is a podcast about us. And by now, like, you're going to get some, some fangirl stuff, but you're also going to get like our life. Okay. That's just who we are. Yeah.
[00:13:58] Um, yeah. So, uh, I think I said it last week, Saturday was my dad's birthday. So we went out and we did like this big birthday lunch at a buffet, which was really great. It was very stuffed. And then I came home and proceeded to nap for the second half of the day. Best thing ever. I just like, I was like, I'm too full. I need to lay down. And then all of a sudden it's like five o'clock at night. Like, wait, what happened? You wake up and you're like, what day is it? I'm very confused. Um, but that was nice.
[00:14:28] Um, and then Sunday, my daughter had her like book club at Linden Tree, which is very fun. Um, I love that she wants to do it every month. It's very sweet. I must have done something right, despite how much she drives me up a wall. Yay. Um, as far as things that I did, I read Trial of the Sun Queen by Nisha J. Tooley.
[00:14:54] Side note, at Steamy Lit Con, they were announcing Nisha, um, like for their wristbands for her signing line. And they kept pronouncing it Tully. And I walked up to her and I'm like, have they been mispronouncing it all day? She's like, yeah. I'm like, I don't understand. Is nobody gonna correct me? I was like, I look at that and I don't even think Tully. I, I, I see Tooley. But, yeah. I digress. Trial of the Sun Queen by Nisha J. Tooley.
[00:15:22] It is the first book in the Artifacts of Oronos series. Uh, it is like The Bachelor meets The Hunger Games. Ooh. Um, so you have Lore who has basically lived her entire life locked up in the Aurora King's prison for basically just existing. Like, she didn't actually do anything wrong, uh, as far as we know. She has, she's just been in prison since she was like eight and she's like an adult now.
[00:15:49] Um, she has spent the entire time thinking about how she's gonna get out and enact her revenge on the king. Because, again, he put her in there when she was like eight. Like, I would be thinking about that shit too. Um, due to generic plot reasons that I can't mention, she finds herself entered into a deadly competition against nine fey women. She's mortal, by the way. Ooh.
[00:16:15] Uh, to win the hand of the Sun King and ascend to the throne to become the Sun Queen. She does not belong there. She has no idea how she got there. She's not even a citizen of the Sun King's court. And just general confusion abounds. But she has to do whatever she can in order to win. Otherwise, she dies. Or worse, she gets sent back to the Aurora King. Which apparently to her is worse.
[00:16:43] And honestly, I kind of agree. Because of everything that has happened in the prison. So, she is doing everything that she can in her power as a mortal woman against nine fey to win. Um, the, the, this trial. Uh, it is excellent. I understand why everybody is obsessed with this series.
[00:17:10] I, I am very upset that the third and fourth book are, uh, Audible exclusives. Um, so the first two books, I guess they have maybe expired out of the exclusivity clause or whatever of Audible. Because this was previously self-published. Uh, it was picked up, uh, by Forever. So it's now Trad published. But, so I, I don't know, obviously all the behind-the-scenes details. But the first two books are no longer Audible exclusive. They used to be.
[00:17:40] And the second two books are still Audible exclusive. So I'm like, do I, I have the books. They're very, very chonky books. So I'm like, do I sit down and I read them with my eyeballs? Or do I cough up money to frickin' Audible? Yeah. It's hard, you know? If they're on, um, Everand. But it's Audible. So they're. Duh. They're Audible exclusives. Yeah. No. They. Look at me. Just giving you a useless.
[00:18:10] I was like, Mandy. Wait. Pay attention. There, you did. And I just completely forgot. Um, so yeah. Because I was thinking like, ugh, don't give money to Audible. Right. I know. I don't want to. So I'm like, do I bite the bullet and just like, do that? Or do I actually like sit down and read with my eyeballs for once in my day in life? Can you still loan audio, like Audible books? I don't know. I've never tried it. Because I thought, I've never done it either. But I think that there, that was an option.
[00:18:37] So you might get to see if someone you know has read, like has bought them already and borrow them. That way you get to read them. But they don't have to get any money off of you. Right. Yeah. I know that they used to be able to do that with Kindle books too. Like there was an option to like loan to somebody, but I don't know. They're greedy. I don't know that. I'm sure that's probably gone now that I think about it. Corporate greed. Yeah, for sure. But something to look into for sure. But yes, I am very excited.
[00:19:05] I have the second book on my Libby, so I'm very excited to read soon. Second book is called Rule of the Aurora King. So I am very fascinated. Also, the Aurora King has a son. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe he becomes the Aurora King. That's all I got to say about that. Yeah. All right. Next up, I read Januaries by Olive E. Blake.
[00:19:32] This is a collection of 14 short stories that center around magical ruminations on life and death and the love or revenge that could outlast them both. It's really fun. They're really short stories. And I listened to the audiobook and it's a full cast narration. So each person does a different story. I think Olive E. Blake actually narrates one of them as well, which is fun.
[00:19:59] And so like it's stories like the first one is like there's this girl who is like the the what's in charge of like a magical wishing bridge. Right. And she only shows up when like on a full moon when the sun comes down and she only exists when this bridge exists. And people who have heard about the bridge will come and make a wish of her. There's like three rules that she has to tell them. There's a whole spiel.
[00:20:27] And she kind of just doesn't exist outside of that. But one day there's like a boy who like finds her and he's like, no, I don't think I'm going to make a wish. And he and she's like, OK, well, that's weird. You know, like you're never going to find this wishing bridge again. Like people don't do that. And he's like, no, I'll find you. And so he like spends his time and coming back, like trying to find her.
[00:20:52] And so every every however many times she comes back, like I think one time it was like 17 cycles that until the next time she saw him and like they just keep meeting again and again because he's like traveling the world because she doesn't show up in the same place every time. And so he's like traveling the world and he finds her every now and then. And it's very cute. And so it's like that kind of like fun story. This one's obviously more geared towards the love side of it.
[00:21:21] But there are ones that are like very like revenge driven, which are also really fun because of course, those are very female ragey. And I love that. So, yeah, I thought it was really fun. It was really quick read, too. So I would recommend it. I read Lily Xiao Speaks Out by our friend Nicole Chen. This is a I literally put in a vomit emoji here.
[00:21:44] Historical fiction middle grade novel set in the 90s about a grunge loving Taiwanese American middle schooler who has to find a way to find her voice to speak up for not only herself and the things that she wants, but also her cousin and the other students at her school who desperately need ESL support.
[00:22:09] ESL, there was some something was passed in the 90s in California that basically didn't make it a requirement to have like a dedicated ESL teacher or ESL classes for students. And so because of that, like it's it wasn't required for them to have it in school, even though, like a large majority of the they're not a large major, but there's a good chunk of kids, especially here in the Bay Area.
[00:22:36] But at Lily's school that really needed that support because they understood what to do. They understood the work, but they needed more time and support in order to kind of get it taken care of. Yeah, there's one scene and this isn't really a spoiler where like Lily, Lily and her cousin, they have like this English project that they have to do where you read a book and then you write a report on it, you know, a book report kind of thing. Yeah.
[00:23:04] And so she her cousin like writes up the report and and, you know, her teachers like not giving her a good grade on it. And she reads it to Lily and Lily at first is like, no, that really it I understand his like critiques. It doesn't really make sense. And then she has her read it again. And as her cousin's reading it, Lily's translating it into Mandarin and realizing that as she's
[00:23:33] translating it, it actually makes sense if it was in Mandarin because the grammatical structures and the points that she was trying to get across are everything's different, right? When you translate something, it doesn't it's not word for word kind of thing. Yeah. And so she was like, she understands what she's trying to say. She just can't do it in the language that the teacher needs her to do it. And that's where the ESL support would kind of come in. So things like that.
[00:24:00] And Lily is very like that one time somebody like in her school yearbook called her like the class robot because she's just like, she just goes to school and she does her homework and she doesn't show emotion and all of that. And so she's really trying to like break out of that. And it's just, it's such a good story about like finding your voice and speaking up for
[00:24:27] the things that you want and speaking up against things that you know are not good. Yeah. Yeah. So I really enjoyed it. Nicole, I love her. She's so sweet. Can we speak up and stand out and talk about how the 90s being historical fiction is a front and a hate crime? It is a hate crime. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it so much. It is. It is a crime against humanity.
[00:24:57] Oh my God. Right. I hate it. The cruelty. Oh man. Yeah. Yeah. That's why. That's why I literally wrote down a vomit emoji because I hate it. Anyways, I reread Legendborn by Tracy Dion because it's been a while and Oathbound just came out and I have Dory Brain so obviously I needed to do a reread in order to make sure everything
[00:25:24] was front of mind before I read Oathbound because I want that like impact. Like I can remember like Brie and Nick and Selwyn and like general very vague ideas, right? Yeah. But I can't connect the dots and remember like what all happened. Right. What happened? Other than like Selwyn Cain is like the beat of my heart. That's about what I remember. Yeah. Right. So I was like, okay, I need to do a reread.
[00:25:52] And we've talked about Legendborn on the podcast several times. So I don't really need to go into the description of that. But it's excellent. If you have not read the Legendborn series yet, go do so. What is you doing? Really? Read it and read The Hunger Games and then come back. Like we'll wait for you. Yeah. Required reading quite frankly. 100%. My God. So good. And finally, I read Enchantra by Kaylee Smith. More on that later, but loved it.
[00:26:22] Love her. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. Love her. I am so excited. And that was my week. That's all I really did this week. Well, do you have a fictional boyfriend this week? Of course I do. Of course I do. And it is Selwyn Cain and Rowington Silver. I need I say more. I don't.
[00:26:51] Selwyn Cain from Legendborn, Rowington Silver from Enchantra. They're like the same person in different font. I just. Perfection. Perfection. I. Yeah. Just read it and you'll understand. You'll understand. That's that's all I have to say about that. Facts. How about you? I mean, obviously, I always have to say Peter Malark when I'm in a situation with Peter Malark. Right. I was going to be like, do I even have to ask?
[00:27:19] But then also Rowington Silver because Shadow Daddy, obviously. But a Shadow Daddy with a lip ring. Good Lord, bear me the strength. Like I was an emo kid. Mm hmm. Mm hmm. If you'd have given me when I was 17, a boy with snake bit piercings and like the long black hair that he has. Mm hmm. Rowington Silver. I would have given my soul away pretty easily. My God. Um. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:27:48] That's for sure. That sound means we have an intruder alert. I've been looking forward to this intruder since she was here last time. Seriously, my gosh. We have Kaylee Smith back. We're so excited. We're going to talk about Enchantra. Look at her. She's so beautiful. I'm literally so excited. Oh my God. I, I, I can't believe it.
[00:28:17] I can't believe it's already like here. I know. I feel like we were just talking about Phantasma. Like this is actually wild. Truly. Because I was, I was doing something last night where I was like going through and I was like, is this the second time she's been here? Like this year? Like that's how recent it feels. I know. Well, because it's only been like seven months. Like it hasn't been a full year. So. I don't know. I know. Well, we're very excited to have you back.
[00:28:46] Um, so of course for anybody who doesn't, hasn't heard of it, give us the elevator pitch of Enchantra. Okay. Okay. Enchantra is the followup to Phantasma. And it is about Genevieve Grimm, who is trying to find herself. And she gets this mysterious invitation to this magical palace called Enchantra. And when she arrives, there is a really hot brooding man who answers the door and tells
[00:29:16] her to go away. But Genevieve being Genevieve, um, she goes inside anyway. And she finds herself trapped in a deadly game of hide and seek with him and his six siblings. So we love a girl who doesn't listen. Yes. Yes. That's literally one of the things I have written down. I said, I mean, like we get our beloved shadow daddy in Rowan and like giving him a lip ring. You knew what you were doing.
[00:29:45] Um, but like, I'm obsessed with Vivi too. Like, I can't love her anymore. Um, and I know like with Ophelia in Phantasma, she like had her OCD and that was like something that she really struggled with. And it was important to you to like have that representation out there. Are there parts of Genevieve that are like you coded? I mean, yeah, for sure.
[00:30:12] I feel like, well, first of all, she is plus size, which is, um, so nice to just be able to do whatever I want. Pretty much. I never got to see plus size, like romantic leads growing up. And now I'm like, yeah. Um, so that was really important to me, but it's also in a way that like, that's not her main insecurity, like at all. Her insecurity stems from like, honestly, not knowing her place in the world and her family.
[00:30:39] And, um, I feel like, I feel like we all maybe kind of have a touch of that. Um, but also just her, like her incessant questioning and her, her need to like know absolutely everything. I feel like she definitely gets from me. Um, I also can't leave well enough alone. Like, like anytime my husband's doing something, I'm just there like asking a million questions and he has the patience of a saint.
[00:31:07] Um, but he'll just like deep sigh and be like, baby, I will explain it to you as soon as I finish the problem. Just let me do it first, please. Yeah. So I feel like, like her and Rowan, like that sort of like push and pull and like Rowan's patience definitely, definitely is influenced a little bit from us. I love that. That's so cute. That is really precious.
[00:31:33] Um, I want to talk about all these characters because Rowan has quite a set of siblings. Yeah. Um, and they are all very unique. Um, did you have like a favorite character that you liked writing of maybe not just the siblings, like anybody in the book? Um, I mean like in general, Vivi was definitely my favorite character to write. I love her so much.
[00:31:59] Um, and I knew going into it that there were actually a lot of people who did not like her character at all. Like the brief glimpse we saw of her in Fantasma. Yeah. I knew it was going to be a challenge. Um, cause she's sort of like the impulsive spoiled sister. Like I, I get the glimpse we saw of her in Fantasma. It was intentional too, because, um, she has a lot of growth between Fantasma and the end of Enchantra. But, um, my favorite sibling, I mean, I love Seven. Like, yes, yes, yes.
[00:32:29] I don't even, I don't even think it's like a kind of a secret. It's very clear that I love Seven so much. Like, anytime, anytime my editor would be like, we should have one of the siblings in this scene or like, we should bring some, I was like, it'll be Seven. Like, let me, he was like, okay, let's develop someone else. And I'm like, fine. He gave me, Karen's going to kill me because like, I can't remember his name off the top
[00:32:56] of my head, but the dude who plays Peter Quill's dad, like dad, he ain't your dad. He ain't your daddy. Michael Rooker. Yes. He gives me Michael Rooker vibes. Wait, that's so funny. Oh my God. Like, I don't know what it is, but I could just see him. Like, I even pictured him like when the Guardians of the Galaxy, when he's blue, but like, he just like, I could see him playing him in a movie adaptation, which I know is like so off from the description, but just the attitude. Yeah.
[00:33:26] Yeah. And the sucker. I was about to say him and that damn sucker. Yeah. And it's like, it's one of my favorite details too, because he needs it. Cause he's a blood wreath and the suckers are made of blood. So it's like a, it's like a need thing. It's not just a him frolicking around. Thirst trapping. Oh, that's definitely part of it too, though. Yeah. He knows what he's doing. For sure. Yeah.
[00:33:56] So kind of to build on that, like we have this like family, but not found family for her too. And we didn't really have anything like that in Phantasma. Like you had characters, of course, but no one that got super, super close or was there all the time. So what's it like to write this like gruesome, but like kind of lovable ensemble? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. I think, I mean, Genevieve even kind of acknowledges that, I think at some point in the book, but
[00:34:26] like the thing about Phantasma was like, it just, it didn't make any logical sense for Ophelia to want to know anyone that deeply. When like they could die at any point. Right. So like having that coldness between them. And it also like made space for her and Blackwell spent a lot of intimate time together, which was also very, very important.
[00:34:47] But like in Chantra, I like the gore is turned down a little bit compared to Phantasma because of the horror is a lot more intimate. Right. And I think, I think it's like those two things are just, it's, it's so, it's so odd. Like the juxtaposition of it was just really fun because it's like you have Phantasma that it's like just so brutal. And like you're watching these horrific things happen to other human beings around you, but
[00:35:16] it's sort of like, you don't have the emotional connection. So it's like the trauma of it is affects you differently. Whereas like in Chantra, they are like the, the murders themselves, whilst still slightly brutal and stuff, it's not, it's not in the same way. It's not as callous. And, but like the emotional trauma of it, I feel like stays so much longer. So yeah, I, it's just, I really wanted to achieve that.
[00:35:44] Like they are to me, two sides of the same coin. Like they're truly sister novels. Like they're very different, but also very the same. And I really liked like towing the line of that balance. I also, I love that you mentioned like how different they are because Genevieve also acknowledges like how different Phantasma is from Enchantra because she's, you know, she's done both. Right. Yeah. And I, it, you're right.
[00:36:13] Like that, the juxtaposition between the two is just, it's just kiss. I love that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I will say, um, when we talked about Phantasma, I did pre-read for Mandy to give her all of like the brutal scenes so that she could prepare. And I did that a lot less with this one. Yeah. Because there's a lot less. And I like, I, I hope people realize that going in, like it's a different vibe along the same kind of line though.
[00:36:41] I tried to like prepare everyone for it. Um, I think, I think it's, I don't know if anyone wants a carbon copy of the same book. Um, and I also knew like Phantasma was a hard bar to clear. I mean, for me, like it was, it was the easiest book I ever read. Uh, and like, I loved it so much, like deeply, deeply think that book is so me. And so I knew whatever came after it, like, it was going to be hard for me to love it as much.
[00:37:12] And like readers, especially like if that's how they found me. So I kind of, I kind of wanted to like ease everyone into like, Enchantra is definitely more like slightly more whimsical, if that makes sense. Yeah. Slightly more enchanting. Um, the stakes are different. Like they're a lot more emotional than they are like physical trials. Yeah. Yeah. So I tried to prepare everyone. Um, we'll see how it goes.
[00:37:41] I've been so nervous about it, but I wrote the book that I liked and that I think fits Genevieve the best. Like Genevieve and Ophelia are so different and her book was just never going to be as horror adjacent. Um, cause that's just not her. Yeah. No. Well, you'll be happy to, I've talked to several people who have read it early and they're like, it's just as good. Oh yeah. I appreciate it as much as.
[00:38:06] I might, I might even like, because I'm less of a gore person, I might love it even more. Honestly. And that's not a knock on Phantasma at all. I loved it too. No, it's true. It's like different. That's why it's kind of like, I think it's, it's important. Like there's always going to be people who like Phantasma more and then there are going to be readers who come back and they're like, oh, I liked Enchantra more. All of my friends prefer Enchantra because they're not really horror people. So it's just like, yeah, I think, I think that's the beauty of writing a interconnected
[00:38:35] standalone series too. I get to be experimental with the vibes and the content in each one. I love that so much as a reader. So it's also really nice to keep creativity flowing as a writer. Yeah. I do not like writing the same thing over and over again, honestly. Like series are a task. Like I love the overarching arc. And like when I'm finished with the series, I like to look back and see like the growth and the work I've done.
[00:39:00] But I love being able to like just switch it up with these books like every single time. It's so nice. Yeah. I say that like I prefer, I think I prefer Enchantra, but I also love Ophelia so much because like Eldest Daughter, OCD, like I relate to her so much more, but then I'm the same way where I can't leave well enough alone either. So you see, it's fun to see bits of yourself in both characters and like know that like a
[00:39:29] lot of readers are going to relate to both of them in different ways. No, exactly. Exactly. I'm with you though. I get, I get you, Eldest Daughter Trauma. It's hard. Yeah. No, I know. That's why it's like, it was so funny writing Vivi's point of view because I was just like, God, we are, we are not the same. Yeah. At all. So like exploring her was really fun. But yeah. Yeah.
[00:39:54] I really love like the, Vivi is not the oldest, eldest daughter. You know, she has all of this emotional baggage with like the way that she grew up and all of that. And I love that you're able to explore that and make me who is the eldest daughter relate to her in that way because it's like, oh yeah, I have trauma from being the eldest daughter, but I could also have Vivi's trauma. Yeah. Yeah. Which is, it's very valid.
[00:40:24] Yeah. I know. It's like, um, the kind of the moral of this is just like, you can have the same parents, but you were not raised by the same parents. No. Um, like, and I think exploring that, like that perspective is so interesting too. Like Tessie really did a number on them, but also remembering like, um, that conversation she has with like Barrington was important to me because it like humanizes your parents as well.
[00:40:50] I feel like growing up, it's, it's like, it's also their first time being a parent. Um, it's also their first time living and it doesn't necessarily excuse certain things, but I think it like gives nuance to the situation, the relationship. Um, yeah, it's like, it's really funny because I think I, I'm like, oh, I'm just writing like a silly, sexy time. And then I'm like family trauma, all of the mental health things.
[00:41:19] Um, so like, yeah, I think, I think that part of writing my books is always just like, whoa. I, uh, I heard something that kind of goes along with that vein and I said it to my mom and she was like, holy shit, that's right. Cause I don't have like children of my own. Right. But it said like your oldest grows up with you and your subsequent children are raised by you. And it's like, oh, no, it's like, cause you didn't know what you were doing. We're out.
[00:41:48] No, it's so true. Exactly. I also, yeah. I, I just like love that concept. Um, some people are like more prepared for it than others. And just like every sibling having like a vastly different situation, despite being in the exact same household, exact same people. Um, yeah. And I mean, that kind of goes for the silver siblings too. Like every single one of them feels about each other and their parents so differently.
[00:42:16] Um, so getting to explore that through them as well. And then knowing for certain that like Rowan and Vivi connected on the same level for a lot of it. Um, that was like really satisfying to write. Cause it's like, they got to like find each other and like find someone who understood them. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. And having to do that in an Italian palace. I mean, the worst thing. Um, how did you like, did you, how did you dream up the setting?
[00:42:45] Like, did you like research Italian palaces? Did you go on a vacation research trip or what? First of all, so actually just, I went to Tuscany again. Um, I went to Florence like in February as well. And I got, uh, I got reacquainted. It's just like another world over there. Um, that's what it feels like. So I feel like that part was easy. Also, if you've ever been to like the countryside of Tuscany, it's just like that region of Italy.
[00:43:12] It's just like, they call it painterly. And I feel like that's such a good descriptor. Like it's just rolling hills and the vineyards. Um, I feel like it was very Baroque inspired, which is probably Baroque and Rococo are like two of my favorite artistic eras and movements after Gothic Victorian. And so like Ophelia was very Gothic Victorian.
[00:43:40] And I was just like, oh, this fits her so well. Just scrolling golden moldings and, um, all of this stuff. And I, I also, there's like this somberness to the palace because it's like, I think she calls it decaying opulence. Like they, they can't keep it up anymore. Like the, the love, the light isn't there. And she kind of brings that to the estate, which was really fun.
[00:44:05] But yeah, honestly, it's just like me and my brain being like, how, how like ridiculously over the top can I make this place? It's like, we have to, we have to stay in one setting for a whole book and not, not to pat myself on the back, but that is a very hard thing to do. And you've done it twice. Yeah. And I, unfortunately, I like to torture myself and I have done it twice.
[00:44:32] Um, book three, it's a, it's a different story where, um, breaking the world a little bit, things, things get a little crazier, but, um, yeah. So that leads into my next question very perfectly because no spoilers, obviously, but that ending lends itself to more coming. And we know that there's a third book. Is there anything like, do we know anything about it? We can, we can, we know anything about it?
[00:45:02] I can't, I literally cannot say anything. Um, I know my team and I are so excited though. I am still writing it and I'm having a blast. It is definitely my favorite. I also think it'll be the fan favorite. Um, so that's all I can say, but I think everyone will be pleased. Like if, especially if you liked Enchanter and stuff, I think everyone will be pleased with the couple and the romance. So I'm really excited. Yeah.
[00:45:31] I cannot wait. I can't wait. Oh my gosh. The whole time I was reading, like, especially near the end, I was like, wait a minute. Wait a minute. No, I love the theories. I love the guesses. It's like my favorite part. Cannot wait. Um, all right. We need to hop into some of our like, um, questions we always ask because we have to know, um, if you've got any updates. Um, so we have our fictional boyfriend of the week segment.
[00:46:00] Rowan was both of our fictional boyfriends this week. Um, Karen's had a fictional granny. I've had a fictional son, so it doesn't have to be like a romantic interest and it doesn't have to be a boyfriend. Um, you got any fictional boyfriends you want to tell us about? Um, I have been rewatching Inuyasha and, um, I know I'm always supposed to be like, I'm supposed to pick someone bookish, but I have not read a book. Y'all, it's so sad. Um, I miss reading so desperately.
[00:46:28] Um, but yeah, I've been watching Inuyasha and my, my raging love for Sishomaru has, um, just resurfaced. I love that. Oh, that's where I am in life at the moment. I love it. I love it. I feel like every time I talk to you, I'm reminded of like things from my childhood that I need to revisit. It's because I'm like, so I have never moved on. Like what's that Taylor Swift sound? Neither have I. I'm still here right where you are.
[00:46:56] Like I have literally never moved on from any of these people. Um, yeah. And I love that. I was going over the Hunger Games before you logged in. Okay. Because I've never left Peter Malark. No. Yeah. I'm still there. Finnick? I'm still there. Yeah. I know. I know. I'm still there. Yeah. It's so true. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Well, you did answer it. You haven't been reading recently, but do you have any, I don't know if you gave us
[00:47:24] like your maybe all time favorites last time. Anything that you can throw at us to be like. I am reading the Night in the Moth. Ooh. Yeah. But Rachel Gillig, I, we did an event together in New York a couple weeks ago. She's so lovely, but I'm, um, I'm doing an event for her tour with her here in San Diego. So I got to, I got to snag an arc. Um, so I've started that. I planned to, when I go on tour, I plan to start reading it on the plane, um, so I can
[00:47:54] prepare for it. But I mean, just wonderful. Yeah. I'm genuinely so excited to get more into it. Oh yeah. I loved her, uh, the duology, the One Dark Window duology. One Dark Window. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. All the book girlies are currently very jealous of you. Oh my gosh. No, I know. It's so funny. Um, cause I, I got the arc and then I went, I was like, oh, can you just like sign my arc? And she was like, I haven't even seen these yet. And I'm like, no. Oh my God.
[00:48:23] What a mood. Um, I like just got my finished copies of Enchantra in and everyone's like begging me for arcs. I'm like besties. This is the first time seeing them. Yeah. I don't even have one. I don't have one. I don't know. Um, can you, like, we don't have to like, you don't have to dive into it since you haven't started yet, but like tour, you're going to go on tours. Like, are you so excited? Yeah. I literally, this has to be like my favorite part of the job.
[00:48:51] Just like meeting, makes everything makes crying in my office. I had 4am. Um, yeah. Like I, and it sold out, which is y'all the last time we talked, I think I was, I was, I mean, such a baby author still. I feel like, I know that was only seven months ago, but I was kind of like, oh, I don't know if this book is going to do anything. And like every, and then I know. I mean USA Today.
[00:49:21] It's like 26 weeks. Crazy. Um, y'all are like good luck charms. Real. Um, I'm so, yeah, I was like, I'm so glad we're talking, uh, right before the release, but yeah. So everything that's happened in the last seven months is just still very mind blowing to me. So it's like going on tour. I'm like, who am I? Um, no, you're everything. Kaley Smith. Are you kidding me? Like that's who you are. So it's so strange.
[00:49:50] But yeah, I'm literally so excited. Like could not be more excited. I do have to tell you one of my favorite games that I play with my family is anytime we go in any store and like, we go through the books and we see Fantasma. I'm like, I'm friends with her on Instagram and I've interviewed her. Oh my God. No, I do that. I do that with my daughter. Whenever we go to a bookstore, she'll see like a book like Fantasma or like, um, Hannah Nicole Mayer's series. And she'll be like, hi besties.
[00:50:20] Like all the books. And I'm just like, oh my gosh. No, that's so cute. I know my roommate does that when she goes home for the holidays, like her and her family, like there'll be Walmart or something. They'll be, they'll send me photos. Like we found her. And I'm like, it's so cute. Yeah. Love it. It's so much fun. I think I told you this, but I was standing in line. I was like at a bookstore, standing in a signing line and Fantasma was on a table and there were two girls standing there like looking at it.
[00:50:50] And I just like popped in. I'm like, let me tell you about this book. Yeah. You want to read that? They walked off with it. Success. Oh my God. I love it. It's my favorite thing is just like talking up all of my friends' books. No, that's me. Every time someone's like, do you have a book to recommend? I'm like, I'm just going to recommend my friends. Like, again. Right. I'm so tired of hearing me talk about them, but yeah. You're like, of course I do. I've got all the recommendations.
[00:51:20] All right. So Wicked Games 3, we've already talked about a little bit, but you have another book that is third in a trilogy. I do. Can you talk anything about that? If I'm honest, y'all, that book is not even my next thing. I have a secret project. I know. That I, we're just waiting to announce. So you've heard it. I do have something secret coming.
[00:51:47] Um, I, that I am like, so, so, so excited for. It's very different for me too. I think everyone will like it though. Um, but yeah, you know, on my romanticy game, just me here. I love it. I love it. Is that one a standalone too? It, that one is, yeah, like a true, its own thing. Mm-hmm. So. Love it. Can't wait, can't wait to talk about it. Can't wait to tell everyone. You heard it here first folks.
[00:52:14] Well that, that segues perfectly into a reminder, um, that Karen has to, she's going to pretend to be sorry, but I'm not. I, I, I'm not going to pretend with Kaylee. Yeah, true. No, yeah, you, you are legally obligated to come back for all future book releases. Like. I was about to say, I'm, I was about to say, please, as if I wasn't going to come my way in here, like, unfortunately for all. No, very fortunately for us. Very fortunate for us.
[00:52:43] Well, we cannot wait for everybody to read Enchantra and for everything that's coming, especially this, I can't wait to hear about The Seeker Project. Um, I'm sorry. I'm so excited. I know. I love this for you. I love this for you. I love that Phantasma, like, exploded and people are realizing that you can write very well. Thank you very much. So I'm very, I'm very excited for all of the stuff that's happening for you. We're so proud of you.
[00:53:13] Thank you so much. I know y'all have been, like, supporting me since, like, day one. I appreciate you don't even know. I know. Oh my gosh. I, I still remember when, like, we were, like, met for the first time in person and I was just like, can you sign this? And now I'm like, no. I'm just like, hey. I know. I was a baby baby, too. I'm like, oh my goodness. Like, what was she doing? It was like, y'all west. I think it was your first y'all west.
[00:53:42] And I had, God, I had a copy of Aruna's Fate, the special edition. Yeah. And I was, I was like, I got, I got, I was like, there's a book plate, but, like, she's going to be there. So I'm not going to put the book plate in. I need her to sign it. Yeah. And I have not left you alone since. That's so fair. But yeah, no, I know. That was, like, 2023, two? I can't even, yeah.
[00:54:12] Great. It's just, things have snowballed. Things have gotten out of hand. In the very best way. We're so happy for you. Truly, yeah. I appreciate it so much. Y'all have no idea. Yeah, I'm just, like, so grateful to be here. And I'm, like, so glad I can, everyone is now reading my book so I can, like, continue to write more. It's, like, the best, I guess the best feeling. Like, that's the best part of it because it's, like, I get to write more stories. So, yeah.
[00:54:41] I mean, this one's going to do USA Today again. It's going to do New York Times, like, we're manifesting. It's going to do the thing. We're manifesting. Yeah. It's coming. It's coming. We can see it. If y'all are listening to this, Enchantra is out now. So go get a copy. You got, like, the cover. I can't. I mean. I cannot. I love her. I have to say. I'm obsessed. I love, and I love, like, the colors. Like, the red and the purple. Thank you. Putting them together. I can't wait. Me and them going, what color do you want this to be?
[00:55:11] And I was, like, can we do purple? Cool. Like, honestly, anytime I can slip purple or pink into something, I will. Valid. Valid. Yeah. Very exciting. Well, we'll let you go, but we can't wait for the next time. No. Everybody go. Go. Go get it. It's so pretty. It's also a book of the month add-on for April. Hello. I know. Also wild. Amazing. Amazing. I love it. I love this for you, Kaylee, so much.
[00:55:41] Thank you so much. Oh, my God. Thank you for doing this. I love you. My cheeks hurt. I know. I know. So many smiles. Thank you. All right. We'll talk soon. Yeah. Until next time. Bye. I love her so much. I'm so obsessed with her. I cannot even begin to explain it. I love her so, so, so much. Yes. So much. So much. I know. I know. I love her.
[00:56:10] I am so glad that I forced her to be my friend. Yeah. Me too. I love her so much. She's so much fun. I feel like we need an episode with her and Hannah Nicole Mayer where we just talk. Oh, my God. The gab fest that would be? A gab fest. And Brianne? We'll just get and Brianne. And we just yap. It would be chaos for forever. I fear we would take over the world. Truly, though.
[00:56:39] We actually might. That actually might. Yeah. That'll do it. Forget the Spice Girls. It's us. Us five. The new. The new Spice Girls. My gosh. Oh, I love her so much. Oh, my gosh. I'm obsessed. Yay. Go pick up Enchantra. And Fantasma if you haven't already. Do it now. No. She also has Young Adult series. All of the things. All of the things. Go get all of Kaylee. Everything Kaylee Smith has written. Go get all of her books so that she can keep writing and we can keep gabbing. Okay.
[00:57:09] Time for announcements. Oh, wait. No. Wait. I don't. I couldn't find it on your Kindle. Mandy will hold it up. I think I have. Hold on. We're very. Well, I don't have a cover cover, but I have something to hold up. I don't have a cover cover either. But I have. Oh, no. Come back. An old bestie. Yay. Almost infamous by Sarah Ainsley. We're going to talk to Sarah next week. I'm so excited to have her back.
[00:57:39] I can't wait. I can't wait. I know. I love her so much. I cannot wait. And. So. She did like a thing when she wrote and when she released that wasn't in a script where she sent out friendship bracelets. And mine is literally hanging on my mirror in my car still. Oh, I love. Yeah. I have. I have mine around here somewhere. Yeah. I moved recently. So. It's in with all the other stuff that I'm still unpacking into my office. Yeah. But. Bonus.
[00:58:09] This book is already out. You can go pick up a copy. And read it. You can read it so that you know what we're talking about. Yes. Because you know we love inside jokes. Yes. And Easter eggs. Be one of us. That's one of us. One of us. Do it. I'm so excited. It's gonna be so much fun. Yay. Okay. Time for a spiel. Yeah. Is that where we're at? I think so. Oh, wait. I have an announcement.
[00:58:37] You don't even know this yet because I haven't talked about it anywhere. At the end of this month on April 30th, Wednesday, April 30th, I am doing an Instagram live with Anna Holguin about her debut novel Up Close and Personal. It is a Latina like SoulCycle Peloton-esque fitness instructor who's like super famous. Oh, I think she's a Peloton? No. What?
[00:59:06] The book. The book. Okay. So she's like this celebrity like famous fitness instructor and the male love interest is like a journalist who's trying to get his like gotcha moment with her. Um, like he's trying to take her down. I don't really know. I haven't quite read it yet, but I'm very excited because it sounds really interesting. Um, so I'm very excited.
[00:59:30] Uh, that's going to be on April 30th, Wednesday, April 30th at 11 a.m. Pacific, which is 2 p.m. Eastern. 11, 12, 1, 2. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. Yep. Mathematics. That's so exciting. Oh, yay. I'm very excited. I, I like slid into her DMs. I'm like, Hey, do you want to do this? And then I was like, I'm going to quietly slither away as an introvert. And she's like, no, come back. Come back. I can do it. I'll do it. I'm so excited.
[01:00:00] It's going to be so much fun. Yay. And then the next day I'm coming to you. Right? No, you're coming the day after that. I thought I was coming on the first. No, because the first is Thursday. Oh, just kidding. Two days later, I'm coming to you. What a good week. Oh, it's going to be a good week. And I'm going to see. I'm going to tell Todd. Oh, yes. Oh, Erin. Oh my gosh.
[01:00:29] It's less than a month out. This is so exciting. I'll be with you in a month. In exactly a month. One month from today, we will be together. At y'all fest, or y'all west, right? Yes. Yeah. Ah! This will be the day after I flew in. Yay! Yay! This is so exciting. Oh my god. This time next month, it's possible that you have already met Tahara Mafi. I probably am a mess.
[01:00:59] I don't know that I won't cry. Oh my god. I don't know that I won't cry. I probably will. This is very exciting. Very exciting. Oops. Yay! Announcements. They're fun. Yay!
